HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT RELEASES 2013 WORK SCHEDULE
Town of Evans Highway Superintendent Ed Michalski announced a tentative road work schedule for 2013. The highway department has been placed in a precarious financial situation with 70 miles of highways to maintain with a budget for resurfacing materials reduced by more than $100,000.00 to funding levels of the mid 1990’s even though the cost of road materials has doubled since 2008. The budget was cut in other line items as well. Resurfacing will be limited this year. Presently, it is not fiscally feasible to maintain 8 to 10 miles of roads each year to stay on a cycled maintenance program to keep the town’s infrastructure in good condition for the motoring public and avoid increased repair costs in the future. The reason for the cuts resulted from a deficit in funds from the fiscal troubles related to the water project (NYS Comptrollers Audit Report) causing the town board to drastically reduce spending in all departments. The highway department was hit hard because it is the second largest budget in town and encompasses many different line items. The work schedule is as follows: Phase II to complete Derby Road from Wisconsin Road to Sturgeon Point Road will be possible due to an increase in funding from the State of New York in the Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS). The replacement of the box culvert on Derby Road near Sturgeon Point Road is on hold until the town board secures funding for its replacement. Brandywine and Darlington will be micro paved. The existing condition of the road surface usually determines what type of resurfacing process is used. Since it is imperative that aging highways must be sealed in some form to prevent further deterioration, the town may be forced to revert back to the unpopular chip/seal process unless adequate funding is appropriated. Highway Superintendent Michalski stated he hopes the general public understands the predicament and went on to say, “It is difficult to prioritize roads for repair when every resident’s road to them is a priority.” Until the financial crisis is stabilized, the highway department will continue to do the best it can to maintain the town’s road system within the limits of approved funding. ___________

EVANS VOTERS
Ed Michalski Supt. of Highways
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the registered voters of Evans who took the time to sign my Republican, Conservative and Independence Parties designating petitions. These endorsements reflect your confidence and encouragement for continued progress to our highway system. A special thank you to all the Committeemen and Notaries who carried those petitions. To all my Democratic friends, even though we were unsuccessful in receiving the Democratic endorsement as I have in the past, I sincerely appreciate your continued trust and support in the future. With all your help, we will be successful this fall and continue to provide the services and to serve the taxpayers of our town with honesty and integrity and I look forward to fulfilling my oath of office for another term. Thank you to all!

Ms. Sondra SPOTLIGHT ON ETHEL MORGANO Celebrating 100 Years
Ethel Morgano, formerly of Brant, NY, recently celebrated her 100th birthday with her children, Kathryn and Douglas, her 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, along with her friends at McGuire Group’s Seneca Health Care Facility, where she has lived since 2008. Ethel was born on June 9, 1913, in South Dayton, NY and baptized in Buffalo. She is the daughter of Anthony and Carrie Valone and eldest of 5 children (Frank, Teresa, Joseph and Charlotte - all deceased). She attended North Collins High School and later graduated from the Buffalo School of Beauty as a hair stylist. She was employed in a few salons before deciding to work from her home in Brant where she lived with her husband Sam (who has since passed away) on a farm where they grew fruits and vegetables. Attending church was very important to Ethel. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Brant and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Ethel’s enjoyment came from taking care of her family and home. She loved cooking and baking and often had company for dinner. In her spare time, she also enjoyed her flower garden, playing bingo, reading and listening to music. She and her husband Sam loved to dance. After her children were grown, Ethel and Sam decided to sell their farm and move to Orchard Park where they were closer to their children. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling around the country and taking cruises. Your family and friends celebrate you, Ethel, on this very special occasion of your 100th Birthday!!!!!!! _________

STONE ROW FEATURED AT ANGOLA’S GAZEBO
On Wednesday, July 31st at 7 p.m., a group new to the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. Stone Row will present the weekly concert. They provide Celtic and World music. The evening is sponsored by NewcombLong Post 928 of the American Legion. The five member group has presented concerts throughout Western New York and a thumbnail sketch about the group follows: “There is something for everyone at a Stone Row show. The material is influenced by elements of world music, folk, country and rock, with rich vocal harmonies and virtuosic instrumentals. Heartfelt performances are tastefully delivered with a fun-loving and outgoing stage presence that showcases the humor and uncompromising musical integrity of these contemporary minstrels.” Handicapped parking is available off Center and High Streets for early arrivals. Refreshments are sold at the park by the Brant-Evans Girl Scouts and the ice cream man has been making a weekly stop at the park. Next week, on Wednesday, August 7th, we’ll see another group new to the Gazebo - Queenstown Swing, featuring music of the Big Band Era, present the concert. The group comes from the former Eddie O Big Band that was popular throughout the area for many years. They feature three female vocalists. The evening is sponsored by Goya Foods Great Lakes and the American Musician’s Union. All who attend the concert will be provided with a free, shrink wrapped six-pack of a Goya product! The rain location for all of the concerts will continue to the nearby New Angola Theater on North Main Street. Bring a folding chair or a blanket and enjoy the evening. __________

The Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce held their monthly Chamber member business spotlight on July 10th at Lakeshore Family Medicine. The medical office, located in the Derby Professional Park at 7060 Erie Rd, Derby, is one of several medical suites located in the complex. A presentation and tour of the office was given by one of their medical assistants. In addition, representatives from several of the other medical offices also offered details of each of their practices. Everyone who attended the Open House was impressed with the wide range of medical services available in the building. Many of the offices, which are headquartered in Buffalo and Williamsville, offer the convenience of having office hours right here in Derby. ANGOLA PENNYSAVER
Letters to the Editor Policy
19 Center Street • Angola • NY 14006
716.549.1164
It is the policy of the Angola Pennysaver to encourage reader participation on it’s new editorial page. Diverse and varied opinions are welcomed. Because of space limitations, we must limit all contributors to one letter per person per month. Letters of 200 words or less will be published unless they contain language or content that the editors feel is inappropriate. Examples of content that will cause letters to be rejected include the following: • Confusing or unclear points. • Crude language. • Poor taste. • Disrespectful comments regarding a group’s or individual’s ethnicity, gender, religion, culture, sexual orientation or race. • Other incendiary language or remarks. • Endorsements for or complaints about individually named commercial products or services. • Poetry. • Personal tributes, attacks or thank yous. The Angola Pennysaver will not knowingly publish factually incorrect information. Only letters written exclusively to the Angola Pennysaver will be published. Letters to a third party or those written to more than one paper are not accepted. Letters written in response to other letter writers should address the issue at hand and, rather than mentioning the writer by name, should refer to the headline and date the letter was published. Discourse should be civil and people should be referred to in a respectful manner. Letters referring to news stories should also mention the headline and date of publication. All letters must be signed and include the writer’s street address and telephone number, which will be used for verification purposes only. Service & Repair Miscellaneous
