CAHAL DUNNE - GRAND TO BE IRISH SHOW AT THE GAZEBO

On Wednesday, July 17th at 7 p.m., Cahal Dunne, an outstanding entertainer, will present his fast moving stage show at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. The event is sponsored by the Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. It has been several years since Cahal appeared locally, and several people in the community have asked, “When is that Irish showman going to return to Angola?” Cahal Dunne - Ireland’s “Happy Man” possesses that certain magical quality known in show business as “it.” “It” transcends talent. “It” comes from deep within a great entertainer and washes over an audience, captivating them. This native of County Cork has a following of loyal admirers and friends that is unique in the rich history of Pittsburg entertainment, and continues to make new friends with each appearance. Refreshments are available at the park and are sold by the Brant-Evans Girl Scouts. The ice cream man and his truck have been making a stop at the park each week. Handicapped parking is available off Center and Park Streets for early arrivals. Next week’s concert on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 will be Twenty Three Skidoo, featuring oldies - New Orleans style. The group features local trumpeter Jayd Mollnar. The evening will be sponsored by the Friends of the Village. Bring a folding chair or blanket and enjoy the concerts. __________

EVANS FORCE BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE

The Evans Force Girls Softball 12U team entered its June 19th game at EMW Impact with a 6-2 record. The Impact at 6-1 entered the game in first place in the Red Division, so this game would determine who would take the division lead. The Force started slow but scored 8 runs in the middle innings to coast to a 14-7 win. The Impact scored 4 in the 7th to close the gap but the outcome was never in question. Tabitha Allen was the hitting star going 3 for 4, scoring 4 times and getting 3 RBI. Caitlin Burbige also scored 4 times and along with Maddy Tempski, Emma Kist and Grace Barker had 2 RBI each. Evie Butlak had a hit and scored 3 times while Ruby Thomas went 2 for 4 scoring once and 1 RBI. Ruby also pitched a complete game win allowing only 6 hits, 2 walks while striking out 13 batters. The Force then hosted interdivision foe the Amherst Lightning on June 28th as part of the EYB picnic event. The Lightning are one of the best teams in Metro league and proved to be a troubling team for the Force to handle. Lightning pitching held the Force hitless until the fifth and Grace Barker got the Force’s first hit. Down 6-0, the Force managed to put 2 across in the bottom of 5. Then thanks to Caitlin Burbige’s 2 run single the Force closed the gap to 6-4 in the sixth. But the Lightning added two in the top of seven to secure a 8-4 victory. The Force only managed 2 hits and struckout 12 times in a subpar offensive performance. Ruby Thomas pitched well in defeat striking out 12 batters. __________

The Evans Force 12U Girls Softball team entered the Dazzlers tournament on June 21-23 coming off an impressive win vs. EMW Impact just a couple of days earlier. Their first opponent would be rival Xtreme Miller. The Force started slow and trailed 4-1 until they put up 11 runs in the 4th inning en route to a 14-4 win. The highlight was Caitlin Burbige’s 3 run homerun as she finished the game going 2 for 3 scoring twice and getting 4 RBI along with game MVP honors. Emma Kist went 3 for 3 and Ellie Hale went 3 for 4 scored twice and got 3 RBI. Newcomer Briget Whipple went 2 for 3 and along with fellow newcomer Tessa Douglas scored twice. Evie Butlak went 2 for 3 and Maddy Tempski went 2 for 4 while both scored twice. Briget Whipple pitched solid in the last 3 innings to gain the win allowing 2 hits, 1 walk and getting 2 strikeouts. Next the Force ran up against the Lancaster Heat, who was the eventual winners of the tournament. The Force cannot muster any offensive (no hits) and their pitching was pounded by Heat’s bats. The Heat got 2 homeruns, 1 triple, 2 doubles and 15 total hits in a 3 inning 14-0 mercy win. Tessa Douglas got team MVP honors for outstanding 3rd base play. Next the Force played the older Xtreme team in the tournament and proved to give the favorite Xtreme a scare. The Force opened the game with Evie Butlak roping a double and was the first of 4 runs to score in the first to open with a 4-0 lead. Then Marissa Gawlek of Xtreme came in to pitch and shutdown the Force as her team took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth and last inning. The Force managed to crawl back to 8-7 with Emma Kist getting a 2 run hit (the only other hit for the Force) after the 1st three in the inning reached on walks. But Emma was left on third base as Xtreme held on to a 8-7 victory. Briget Whipple pitched well in the lost but Xtreme played the “bunt” game to preserve the victory. Ellie Hale received team MVP honors for hustle and gritty play. The final game of the tournament was against rival Eden Lady Raiders. This was a heartbreaking game due to the continued effort of the Force to come back. The Lady Raiders jumped out to a 8-1 lead only to see the Force cut the lead to 8-6. The teams kept trading runs as score changed to 9-7, 10-8 and 13-11 in the next 3 innings as the Force could not get inside the 2 runs. The Lady Raiders finally scored 2 unanswered runs in the final inning to go on to a 15-11 win. It was a very sloppy game in the field for both teams. Evie Butlak and Briget Whipple each went 2 for 2 with a double, scoring twice and getting 1 RBI. Emma Kist went 2 for 3 with a double and triple. Ellie Hale went 2 for 4 and 2 RBI, while Tabithia Allen went 1 for 4 and 2RBI, CaitlinBurbige 1 for 3 and Maddie Miranda went 1 for 2 and scored twice. __________

Arthritis

rticles written by health care providers in publications such as this can be very helpful to the public. As such, I wanted to provide the reader with something that is “big reward” with “little effort”. So the topic of arthritis comes to mind. I see the effects of joint arthritis every day: pain, swelling, loss of mobility and strength, arthroscopic surgeries, and total joint replacement. Exercise has been used as one modality to fight arthritis, but we all know exercise can cause more problems than it prevents if done incorrectly. Here are some tips to help the average person exercise without grinding away valuable joint carti‑ lage. 1. Weight loss - obviously, the combination of gravity, body mass, and repetitive com‑ pression and shear can combine to wear away joint cartilage. Losing a few pounds will decrease the compressive forces at the weight-bearing joints, as well as help with hyper‑ tension, diabetes, and heart disease. 2. Cross-training - Let’s give credit to the people who walk or run for exercise. Their hearts and lungs are benefiting. However, a steady diet of weight-bearing exercise will contribute to degeneration of joint cartilage in the load-bearing joints. Cross training sim‑ ply means alternating weight-bearing exercise with other forms of exercise that are less compressive. Stationary or street cycling, elliptical trainers, rowers, swimming and aquatic exercise programs are examples of exercise that are less compressive. The same force through the same joints done too many times will cause deterioration of the cartilage, but changing the forces will change the wear-pattern for the better.

Do You Suffer From Vertigo?

Do you experience a spinning sensation that lasts for a number of seconds when you roll over in bed, get out of bed, when you bend down to put on your shoes, or when you tip your head back to look upward? If so, then you may have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), also known as positional vertigo. Patients who have positional vertigo may benefit by treatment known as the canalith repositioning procedure (CRP). The procedure takes only a few minutes, and studies have shown that it is effective about 80% of the time in completely resolving positional vertigo.

The cost of CRP is only $20 If you would like to schedule a CRP diagnostic/treatment session, call our office at

627-7759

3. Range of Motion, stretching, and strengthening exercise - Joints need to move throughout their entire range of motion (ROM) in order to continue absorbing compressive forces evenly. Muscles that remain strong will maintain their ability to absorb force. So stretching and strengthening are important components of joint health.

For more information about positional vertigo or other services we offer, please visit our website. All fees are posted on our website.

To conclude, I would say keep walking or jogging in moderation if OK with your doctor, but make sure you watch your diet, cross train, and stretch and strengthen. Conserve your cartilage and get as many miles from it as you can. And make sure you see your doctor if you have any problems with pain, swelling, limping, stiffness or weakness. Physical Therapy may be helpful in getting you through these symptoms, or even better, in helping you get on the right program to prevent these symptoms. Feel free to call Angola Physical Therapy at 549-1099 if you have questions or to make an appointment.

cataract surgery.

s men and women age, they can experience certain physical changes and health challenges. Vision impair‑ ment is one condition that many as‑ sociate with aging, and cataracts are a primary concern for those of middle-age and older. Today, more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts. Ac‑ cording to the National Eye Institute, by age 80, more than half of all Americans will either have a cataract or have had

Cataract is clouding of the eye’s lens that blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. Normally the lens is clear, which allows light to pass through to the back of the eye, so that a person can see well-defined images. If a cataract forms and the lens becomes covered in an opaque film, light cannot pass through easily. The result will be fuzzy vision, almost like looking through a fogged-up window. If cataracts are not treated, an individual may eventually lose most of his or her vision. One or both eyes can be affected by cataracts. In the case of both eyes being compro‑ mised, one eye is usually worse than the other. The primary risk factor for developing cataracts is age. The older a person is, the greater their risk. However, there are several other risk factors as well. • Intense heat or long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun • Certain diseases, such as diabetes • Obesity • High blood pressure • Inflammation in the eye

• Hereditary influences • Long-term steroid use • Eye injuries • Other eye diseases • Smoking

Prevent Blindness America provides free information to the public on everything from cataract basics to tips on what to expect from cataract surgery. Visit preventblindness.org/cataract or call its toll free number at (800) 331-2020. And, as part of its new Healthy Eyes Educational Series, PBA offers a specific online module on cataracts, including a Power Point presentation and guide. The organization shares this information about cataracts: • Early symptoms of a cataract may include cloudy or blurry vision. • Lights may cause a glare, seem too dim or seem too bright. • Sufferers may also find it difficult to read or drive, especially at night. • Individuals may have to change their eyeglass prescriptions often. There are no medications or other treatment options besides surgery to correct cataracts. In the United States, cataract surgery has a 95 percent success rate, and patients often have 20/20 or 20/40 vision post-surgery. Cataract surgery is also the most frequently performed surgery, often performed as an outpatient procedure.

In Canada, where, according to Statistics Canada, seniors will make up 21 percent of the population by 2026, cataract surgery is also frequent and well tolerated. Approximate‑ ly 250,000 cataract surgeries take place in Canada each year, according to The National Coalition for Vision Health. It is widely recommended to get regular eye exams to check for cataracts early on. “By getting a complete, dilated eye exam, your doctor can discuss with you the best strat‑ egy to protect your vision well into the future,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. “We encourage everyone, especially those ages 40 and older, to make their vision a priority by scheduling an eye appointment today.”

Simple Ways To Avoid Overspending As Retirement Nears

hen the nest is empty and the kids no longer need financial support, many men and women find themselves with some extra mon‑ ey in their budget. Fewer mouths to feed and no more college tuition bills can give parents a sense of financial freedom they may not have had since before starting their family. But that freedom can also lead to overspending, some‑ thing that can put retirement in jeopardy if peo‑ ple are not careful. Though it’s understandable for men and women to splurge on a well-deserved getaway once the kids have finally left the house, it’s important for adults to ensure that such splurg‑ ing does not become routine. The following are a few ways men and women with some new‑ found disposable income can avoid overspending and putting themselves in financial hot water as they get closer to retirement. • Pay with cash whenever possible. Swiping a debit card or credit card is certainly a conve‑ nient way to shop, but it can also be dangerous. Many people find it difficult to keep track of their spending when they use debit cards or credit cards to make their purchases. Using cash to make purchases, especially daily purchases like a morning cup of coffee, reduces the likelihood of overspending. This can help you get a better idea of how much money you’re spending and if there are any steps you can take to curtail that spending. An effective way to use cash is to withdraw money from the bank once per week and use that as your weekly supply of money. If you find yourself frequently running out of money each week, then you’re likely spending more than you should. • Keep a financial journal. Men and women who must adapt to having newfound disposable income may find it is not much different from younger men and women learning to manage their money when they first start working. Some of those lessons, like saving more than you spend, might need to be relearned. One way to get a grip on your spending is to keep a financial journal to track your daily and monthly expenses as well as larger purchases like a new television. Write down the monthly expenses you know you have each month, such as a mortgage payment or a car note, and each and every purchase you make, including how much you spend on dining out each month. Do this for at least a couple of months. When you have logged several months’ activity, examine your journal to see if there are any expenses that can be trimmed to save money. • Don’t go overboard rewarding yourself. Once your last child has left the nest, the tempta‑ tion to reward yourself with a luxury item or two might prove overwhelming. After all, rais‑ ing a family and paying for college tuition has no doubt required substantial sacrifice on your part, so it’s well within reason that you want to reward yourself after all these years. Avoid overdoing it so your finances aren’t stretched too thinly. A vacation with your spouse is reasonable, but buying a villa overseas might be a little over the top. Luxuries can be nice, but they can also drain a budget. Your monthly expenses once the kids have moved out should be lower, so if you find your cost of living has increased now that your nest is empty, you might be forced to determine which of your expenses are luxuries and which are necessities. • Take advantage of your “experience.” Though accepting a “senior” discount might be a blow to your pride, it also can be a boon to your bottom line. Many establishments, includ‑ ing gyms, restaurants and movie theaters, offer discounts to men and women age 55 and older. This can help you save a substantial amount of money over time, and no one has to know you’ve started cashing in on your experience.

Traveling for seniors can be rewarding and relaxing. Those with a substantial retirement nest egg have numerous des‑ tinations at their disposal. Ma‑ ture vacationers travel more frequently and stay longer than any other age group. Travel ranks among the top leisure activities for men and women over 50, according to the Web site Suddenly Senior. Seniors can find several travel advantages at their disposal. Also, thanks to special se‑ nior discounts, travel may be even more affordable than first expected. While certain destinations are not always practical for certain age brackets, there are many places to which seniors can visit comfortably and enjoy a wealth of memories.

hose who have said goodbye to the work-a-day grind now have many hours to settle down and relax. People who have continually put off va‑ cations in lieu of work respon‑ sibilities may now have all the time they need to explore the world.

With coupon. Cannot be used with any other discount. Expires 8/15/13.

• Theme parks: Although theme parks may seem carved out entirely for the adventureseekers, there are many other more placid activities that would appeal to those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground rather than looping through the air on a rocketpropelled coaster. With animal preserves, water parks, fine dining, and a bevy of hotels either in the park or directly on the outskirts, theme parks provide many activities for older travelers. Although theme parks require a lot of walking, many provide wheelchairs or mo‑ torized scooters for those who need to get off of their feet. They also make a great option for seniors who will be traveling with the entire family, including children. • Beach resorts: Provided flying is medically safe, a beachside vacation can be the ideal trip for seniors looking for the utmost in relaxation. For those who have passports, the pos‑ sibilities are endless. Those who prefer to remain on relatively domestic soil can retreat to Puerto Rico, south Florida, the California coast, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. • Cruising: Cruising is a preferred vacation choice for the 50+ set because it offers the convenience of an all-inclusive package and transportation all in one. With the myriad ac‑ tivities offered on board, cruises are a versatile vacation option for seniors. Also, there is no need to worry about traveling far for meals and other entertainment options, as everything is self-contained on the cruise ship. For more active seniors who enjoy the daily getaway, excursions in ports of call can provide the variety desired. • Guided tours: Seniors who want to experience a piece of history can sign up for tour packages backed by reputable companies. The tours may involve train or bus travel, and various attractions will be visited. At the end of the tour, individuals can choose to extend the vacation by checking into a hotel nearby. • RV trips: Another self-contained vacation that is entirely up to the people traveling is va‑ cationing by recreational vehicle. Seniors can customize their routes depending on which areas they want to see. Companies like Cruise America RV enable people to rent an RV so they needn’t worry about the expense of buying one outright. However, should RV travel‑ ing become addictive, there always is the option of buying a camper later on. Setting an itinerary and then establishing the pace enables travelers to tour the country or cross the border as desired. From beaches to national parks, many areas offer RV hook-up areas and amenities. • Exotic tour: Seniors who were never able to afford or spare the time for an extensive vacation may now want to visit those exotic locations that have beckoned for years. Now could be the time to book a ticket for Europe and visit all of the cities that have made the history books. Those looking for even more adventure can travel to the South Pacific and explore tropical islands. Others may want to go “down under” and experience the rugged Outback or the culture of Australian city centers. With a bevy of free time and fewer restrictions holding them back, seniors could be ready for the next great travel adventure.

The students each wrote a note of support to the child who will choose their pillowcase and included it with it. LOCAL CADET GRADUATES FROM WEST POINT

Cadet Eric Christopher Renn, son of Randy and Lori Renn of Angola, NY, graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Renn graduated from Lake Shore Central Senior High in 2009. While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in Systems Engineering. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army within the Army Aviation branch and will report to Fort Rucker, AL for his first assignment. The mission of the US Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army. “Graduating from West Point is certainly a high achievement and speaks to Lt. Renn’s character, determination and ability. We all owe Eric a debt of gratitude for his willingness to serve his country and I wish him continued success,” said Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27). __________ Roofing
