SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOLS AND BLESSED JOHN PAUL II PARISH BURY TIME CAPSULE
On Thursday, September 13, 2012, Southtowns Catholic School, Father Peter Karalus and several friends buried a time capsule celebrating the 1st Anniversary of Blessed John Paul II Parish. After the time capsule was blessed, everyone received a cup of dirt to pour over the box. It is filled with what we hope will give people an insight about what life was like for parishioners and students today. Items that were placed in Blessed John Paul II Parish First Anniversary Time Capsule: A copy of the Official Decree merging the 2 parishes; a copy of Bishop Kmiec’s Letter naming the parish Blessed John Paul II; Lists of “the firsts” of our first year: Baptisms, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriages, Deaths; containers of soil from OLPH and St. Vincent’s - The soil in which the seeds of our faith have grown; a copy of the programs from the Opening Evening Prayer & Mass with Bishop Kmiec; a copy of Fr. Peter’s Homily from the Mass with the Bishop; a parish pin and oval bumper sticker; the altar cloth with all our thumbprints; various newspaper articles; a current parish bulletin; a photo album of our merge events; parishioners notes to our future generations; OLPH & St. Vincent’s Heritage Weekend bulletins; Southtowns Catholic 2011-12 Year Book; SCS brochure & window decal; 2012 Breaking Bread book; copy of the Sacramentary - book used to celebrate Mass - the previous translation (that was used for our first parish Mass); photo from 2003 of Fr. Peter with Pope John Paul II. The Time Capsule was buried by the Heritage walkway in front of the main entrance to Blessed John Paul II Parish. Pictured here: Father Peter Karalus and several SCS students. __________
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS TO BE HELD AT ST. ANGOLA LIBRARY READING PROGRAM ENDS
After a long hot summer fulled with activity, this year’s summer reading program at the Angola Public Library is over. This year’s theme was “Dream Big, Read!” One of the events was a contest designed to encourage children to read books to help retain their reading skills during their vacation from school. Each time a child checked out a book during a library visit, they were able to fill out a chance to win a library tote bag filled with prizes. The drawing was held at the end of August. Winners were: Ava Rozborski, age 1; Charles Dale, age 4; and Parker McSkimming, age 7. __________
INMATE WORKERS PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE IN EVANS
An inmate Community Service Crew, from Collins Correctional Facility, recently completed an assignment at Evans Youth Baseball Fields on September 4, 2012. The crew, consisting of five inmate workers and one supervising Correction Officer, logged over 480 man hours at the complex which consists of seven baseball diamonds and two buildings. The crew’s main goal during the project was to paint the maintenance building and remove large amounts of brush that had clogged the parking lots and adjacent fields over the past few years. The crew was very successful at their goal and even logged a day inside the concession stand, cleaning and preparing it to be closed for the season. Over 15 gallons of paint were used on the maintenance building and poison ivy and brush was removed from the north side which made the outside storage area once again usable. In addition, all of the bleachers and dugout supports were also painted and some painting was done on the concession building as well. “Any time we can use this kind of assistance, it is greatly appreciated, the amount of work that is needed to maintain a facility this size is enormous. Volunteer workers in the spring can only do so much over the course of our two-day cleanup and this has been needed for a long time”, stated Don Lockwood, Tournament Chairman. ___________

EVANS DEMOCRATIC CLUB NEWS
Board of Elections Commissioner Dennis Ward, Esq., led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance at the September meeting of the Evans Democratic Club. Ward has served in this position for 7-1/2 years. He will be on the ballot for re-election as Commissioner at the next meeting of the County Democratic Committee. Ward discussed the changes in election administration including the centralization of this function. This arose from the federal 2002 Help America Vote Act (HAVA), which promoted the use of electronic voting. He talked about his office's efforts to promote privacy for voters. Although the machines were paid for by federal dollars, the paper ballots are paid for by the local Board of Elections, which gets expensive at 56 cents per ballot. Erie County was the first county in the state that developed procedures to print its own paper ballots -- saving $3 to 4 million dollars over that time. Other counties are starting to observe how Erie County does this so that they can start doing this as well. Ward talked about the Board website he spearheaded. This includes downloadable forms for absentee ballots, to register to vote, and to change one's political affiliation. There is also election inspection training by webinar which one can do at home. His goal has been to be a good steward of the taxpayers' money. The Board is at the same personnel staffing level as 2004 while absorbing the election administration function and attending to the paper ballots. The New York constitution requires that the Board be balanced politically, so that is how hiring decisions are made. Some people question if that's efficient. Ward noted that its what New York state law requires; he reminded how it operated in Florida during the 2000 presidential election, where a single Republican -- Secretary of State Katherine Harris -- controlled the outcome. He closed by asking the committee members for their vote at the reorganization meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Sat., September 29 at the Hearthstone Manor in Depew. There are four people currently running for County Chair: Jeremy Zellner, Jim Eagan, Frank Max, and Marc Panepinto. This will be by secret ballot; the winner will be determined by majority vote. The votes are weighed according to the vote count for governor in your district in the last gubernatorial election. It is important to have a good turnout from Evans. Nine new members were nominated and accepted into membership in the Club : Sandra Wiskup; Bob Heath Jr.; Gary and Janice Tribula, Mayme Barone; Margaret Ashton; Chet Dimitroff; Tom and Barbara Hammond. Town chair Robert "Bob-cat" Catalino congratulated Mike Amodeo, who won the Democratic primary for the State senate seat. Signs can go up 30 days before the general election. Each of the 17 districts in Evans will have at least 2 Democratic election inspectors on Election Day. Bob-cat is looking for volunteers for Congresswoman Kathy Hochul's bid for re-election. He will be issuing the updated list of Evans Democratic committeemen. Town Board member Paul Cooper discussed how the Town will handle the re-levying of outstanding water bills onto the County tax bills. This hurts the town, which becomes cash-strapped due to outstanding payments. This is a tough year for the budget, so there's a lot of belt-tightening going on. The board is considering savings through early retirement incentives. The e-cycling program has collected 22 tons of material in the first 6 months of the program. Town Chair Bob Catalino encouraged the Board to rely upon the resources of the many people who have served in Town government in the past. The next meeting of the Democratic Club will be on Tuesday, October 16 at 7:30 pm at the VFW. __________

NYSDOT TO RE-STRIPE LANES ON ROUTE 5 IN EVANS
New Striping Pattern Will Help Ease Left-Hand Turns and Increase Safety New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Acting Regional Director Darrell Kaminski today announced that the lane configuration on Route 5 will be modified between Bennett Road/Eden Evans Center Road and Sturgeon Point Road in the town of Evans, Erie County, as part of a pavement resurfacing project beginning on October 1, 2012. “The State Department of Transportation continues to improve our transportation infrastructure for the traveling public,” said Acting Regional Director Darrell Kaminski. “The new lane configurations and wider shoulders on Route 5 in Evans will improve traffic flow and enhance safety for all the motorists, cyclists and pedestrians that travel this busy highway.” Route 5 will be resurfaced approximately 3 miles from Beach Road to Sturgeon Point Road. As part of this work, the existing four-lane section of Route 5 between Bennett Road/Eden Evans Center Road and Sturgeon Point Road will be re-striped to provide a three-lane section. The lane configurations include one travel lane in each direction, with a continuous, dedicated two-way center left turn lane, and wider paved shoulders. The lane configurations at the signalized intersections with auxiliary turn lanes will not be changed. The section of Route 5 from EdenEvans Center Road to Beach Road will remain five lanes. The center left turn lane is being added in an effort to ease left hand turns and reduce rear-end vehicle crashes. The wider shoulders will provide a safer environment for bicyclists and disabled vehicles. The road resurfacing project, which will include the new lane configurations, is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2012. __________
“RIBFEST” A “TASTY” SUCCESS
The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. held its 2nd annual, all you can eat, “Ribfest” on Sat., Sept. 22, 2012 at Most Precious Blood Church hall. In spite of rainy, cold weather, over 100 people enjoyed the warm and cozy hall while feasting on BBQ’d ribs, salt potatoes, cole slaw, baked beans, roll & butter, and soft drinks served up buffet style by Lions Club members. Outside, bundled up, dedicated members grilled the over 250 lbs. of ribs which were enjoyed indoors. This fund raising activity is just one way your Lions Club raises money to support community activities like the Christmas Basket Program coordinated by the VFW Post, or the Sunshine Day at Cradle Beach Camp. Other activities include free eye exams and glasses for the needy residents of the towns of Evans & Brant, scholarships for graduating seniors who reside in Evans or Brant and demonstrate a willingness to “get involved” in community service. Upcoming events include the Children’s Halloween Costume Parade on October 27th in the Village of Angola. This parade is the longest running, annually staged costume parade in Western New York. Watch the Pennysaver for details. Unlike some service organizations, not one penny of any money raised from the public is spent by Lions Clubs for administrative costs or salaries. All our members are volunteers. Every penny (as mandated by Lions Clubs International By-Laws) must be spent back to the community in the form of service projects. Your local Lions Club is a member of Lions Clubs International, the largest service organization in the world. Anyone interested in Lions Club membership, or needing help, should contact: Evans Township Lions Club Inc., P.O Box 342, Angola, NY 14006. Information is also available on line at evanslions.org. __________

Local News POLONCARZ, VOLUNTEERS CLEAN UP AT GREAT LAKES BEACH SWEEP
Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined by Erie County Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Troy Schinzel, Commissioner of the Department of Environment and Planning Maria Whyte, volunteers from the Lake Shore Central School District, and other community members at Bennett Beach while participating in the 27th annual Great Lakes Beach Sweep. The event, part of an international coastal cleanup effort, increases public participation in addressing pollution problems while compiling data to better target pollution sources. “Protecting and preserving our natural resources, such as here at Bennett Beach, is something that all County residents can and should take part in,” said Poloncarz. “By lending a hand in this cleanup effort, we are reaffirming the value we place on these assets, as well as our commitment to their beautification and protection for future generations. I appreciate the efforts of all the volunteers working to clean up our area beaches and waterways, and thank them for their involvement.” The Great Lakes Beach Sweep serves a scientific sampling study as well as a cleanup effort. Volunteers scour area beaches for 2 hours, picking up debris and recording what they have collected. This data is then submitted to the American Littoral Society for evaluation to identify ways to reduce or prevent these types of pollution, which not only diminishes the beauty of our natural resources but poses a threat to wildlife. In 2011, 818 volunteers of all ages cleaned beaches from Woodlawn State Park to Westfield, NY. Statewide, a total of 6,638 volunteers cleaned over 260 miles of shoreline, removing 93,644 lbs. of debris in 24 counties. The American Littoral Society analyzes data submitted from participating sites and compiles the information into a list featuring the “Dirty Dozen”, the twelve most commonly recorded types of pollution. In 2011, these included (in descending order): caps/lids (13% of total); food wrappers/containers (10% of total); cigarettes/cigarette filters (10% of total); plastic bags (8% of total); straws/ stirrers (7% of total); plastic beverage bottles of 2 liters or less (7% of total); cups, plates, forks, spoons, knives (6% of total); rope (5% of total); beverage cans (5% of total); glass bottles (4% of total); balloons (2% of total); and cigar tips (2% of total). “The beaches have never been cleaner, but we are thrilled that we still have thousands of volunteers willing to come out,” said Sharen Trembath, Lake Erie Coordinator for the Great Lakes Beach Sweep. “I love the idea that over these 27 years of the program we have made a difference by involving intergenerational volunteers – children, parents, grandparents – and that we have seen a difference in the reduction of certain items, like tires.” The Great Lakes Beach Sweep also helps to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and its impact on the environment. Much of the runoff found in area waterways is actually the result of litter on the street, which enters waterways through storm sewers. The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning coordinates a regional effort to address stormwater runoff through the Western New York Stormwater Coalition. “It is important to realize that a significant amount of the pollution that finds its way to our beaches and waterways comes from land-based sources like street litter, which gets into storm sewers and finds its way to the water,” said Commissioner Maria Whyte. “While it is good to see all these volunteers here cleaning up beach debris, I would encourage all residents to please dispose of garbage and trash in appropriate receptacles, to clean up trash when you see it rather than let it blow around, and to be responsible for whatever waste they might produce.” Additional volunteer opportunities for cleanup along the region’s waterways are available by participating in Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper’s Fall Shoreline Sweep on Saturday, September 22, 2012. ERIE COUNTY CLERK URGES TEEN DRIVERS TO JOIN THE “IT CAN WAIT” CAMPAIGN
TAKE THE PLEDGE TO NEVER TEXT & DRIVE Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs is asking all motorists, especially young drivers to keep both hands on the wheel and to take part in AT&T’s “It Can Wait” movement on September 19th. “As County Clerk, I am responsible for the administration of local auto bureaus which issue all drivers’ licenses. I encourage all drivers to take the Safe Driving/No-Texting Pledge and then share it with their friends and family.” This pledge, which can be found at any of the Erie County Auto Bureaus or on-line at www.erie.gov/clerk, is signed by the parent and their teen driver, and states that while driving the teen will not send or receive text messages or use handheld electronic devices. It ensures that the teen understands that if he/she violates any of the rules, it may result in the loss of driving privileges which you reserve the right to deny. In a recent study by the National Safety Council, more than 100,000 crashes a year involve drivers who are texting, causing life-changing injury and death; and according to Virginia Tech Transportation Institute Research, texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be in an accident. County Clerk Jacobs is also encouraging all parents to sign and adhere to their own pledge. “A more disturbing fact, based on a survey conducted by AT&T Wireless, is that 77% of teens have seen their parents text and drive,” says Jacobs. “We need to continually educate the public that texting and driving is not only dangerous and has costly consequences, but it is against the law”. For additional information on the Erie County Clerk’s “Safe Driving/No-Texting Pledge”, please contact his office at 716/858-7766 or by e-mail at ErieCountyClerkOffice@erie.gov. __________

SUICIDE: AN EVENING OF DIALOGUE, AWARENESS AND HEALING
The facts are shocking. Over 108 suicides and hundreds more suicide attempts will likely occur in Erie County in the next 12 months. There is a death by suicide every 14 minutes in the U.S. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death and the rate is rising over 2% every year. “Suicides have struck our community pretty hard.” says Jerry Bartone, executive director of Community Concern of WNY which operates a mental health clinic. “Nearly 1 in 10 people who have come in our door this year have some degree of lethality, the highest we’ve ever seen. Suicide can be prevented and we must to do a better job of prevention. That is why we are holding this event. This is like CPR. Everyone should be aware of the signs of suicide among their friends and loved-ones, and know what to do. We also see that survivors of a suicide death suffer too, with acute and traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), not unlike veterans coming back from combat. I am confident that we can save lives with this event.” On Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 pm at the American Legion Post 928, 7353 Erie Road in Derby NY, experts from the Suicide Prevention Center of New York and the New York State Office of Mental Health will speak about how to recognize the signs of suicide and how to respond. Members of local agencies will be present to provide resources where people can turn. There will be a discussion about survivor support after suicide loss from the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. Parents will learn about the proactive role the Lake Shore Central School District is taking screen students for depression and lethality. Refreshments will be served with time to talk with the presenters. For more information call Community Concern of WNY, Inc. at 947-5025. __________

LAKE SHORE HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN ACADEMY WELCOMES CLASS OF 2016!
The Lake Shore High School Freshman Academy welcomed the Class of 2016 through its doors this fall. Students in the freshman seminar classes have been participating in various teambuilding activities designed to showcase the value of working together to create positive outcomes. Although every student is different and unique, the thing all students have in common is that they are all freshmen and part of the same class. The goal is to use such consistency and collaboration to create class camaraderie. In addition to teambuilding, the Lake Shore 2016: Freshman Seminar students have been learning what it takes to be successful academically and socially in high school. Students are learning organizational skills, time management, note-taking, critical study and reading skills.
