At the recent “Meet the Candidates” event, Mr. Dash tried to shift blame when he stated that the reason for lack of economic growth was due to our Lake Shore Schools. He stated that it is among some of the lowest performing school districts. He could not be more WRONG! In 2015 Lake Shore had a 97% graduation rate, which ranks in line with the top private and public schools in WNY. In his 8 years on the Town Board, Supervisor Dash has failed to address the Town of Evans’ lack of economic growth. This failure should not be placed on the teachers and administrators of Lake Shore School District, who diligently work together on enhancing and enriching the lives of their students each year. We have great teachers who are vested in the success of their students and an engaged school board and administrators who continue to look for ways to offer new programs and classes that will help our students prepare for the challenges of the future.

Good Leadership assesses the situation and moves forward with a solution, not blaming others. The event, which is designed to clean up shorelines of various man-made refuse, was held from 10 AM â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Noon. Lake Erie Coordinator Sharon Trembath led volunteers cleaning up waste from area shorelines from WestďŹ eld to Woodlawn State Park in Hamburg. It was the 30th year that the Great Lakes Beach Sweep has joined forces with the International Coastal Cleanup. Southtowns Catholic School Studies Crayfish Students at Southtowns Catholic School are beginning a unit on CrayďŹ sh. The unit is a part of the STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math) initiative at the Diocese of BuďŹ&#x20AC;alo. STREAM emphasizes interdisciplinary, hands on learning, especially in Science. Students began the unit discussing habitats and humane treatment. Southtowns Catholic School students joined the Great Lakes Beach Sweep on Saturday, September 19th to help clean the shoreline in front of Sturgeon Point. The kids collected data on the the 5 bags of garbage that they ďŹ lled. They also found several long pieces of pipe that were then sent to be recycled. Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting The Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday September 21st for one of itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest members, We Rock the Spectrum. We Rock the Spectrum is the newly opened kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gym, located at 6950 Erie Rd ( Rt 5 )in Derby. It is located in the Tops Plaza, right next door to Snap Fitness. It is a gym for all kids, with equipment and classes geared toward sensory processing disorders. They opened their doors for business just a few weeks ago and received some great media coverage. Ruth Jane (Bretzler) Kurtz Ruth Jane (Bretzler) Kurtz worth passed away June 19, 2015 at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice at Kennesaw Mountain Marietta, GA 30064. She lived a remarkable 97 years, surrounded by family and friends who enriched her life every single day, as she did theirs. Born Ruth Jane Bretzler, she was the daughter of John George Bretzler and Caroline 'Carrie' Staubitz. Ruth grew up in Derby New York and worked at Trico in Buffalo as head of payroll where she met and later married Edward Henry 'Amos' Kurtzworth in the First Church of Evans, Derby, NY, on May 6, 1939. Living in the Buffalo area Ruth was active at the Christ the King Church, Amherst, NY, Canisius High School Mother's Club, Buffalo, NY, and Beta Triangle Past Queens. Her family later moved to Elma, NY where their four children enjoyed raising and showing horses. Retirement took them to Nettles Island, FL and Port St. Lucie, FL. Port St Lucie is where Ruth remained active, playing bridge and creating beautiful stitcheries until she moved to Marietta, GA in 2010, to be closer to her daughter Laurel Kovach, where she enjoyed her last 5 years at the Winnwood Retirement Community, Marietta, GA still independent, active and blessed with new friendships. Ruth left a loving legacy through her beautiful handwork - knitting, counted cross stitch, quilting and gracious welcoming to her home which was always highlighted by her famous spaghetti dinners. She loved watching sports and game shows, working crossword puzzles and spending beautiful mornings on her porch. Her resilience in surviving so much in her 97 years was

reflected through the love, kindness and strong faith that was always present in and around her and admired by all who knew her. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, John Bretzler (1934), mother Carrie Staubitz (1978), sister Grace Ivy (1921), husband, Amos (1992), and 4 sons, John James (1954), Lawrence Scott 'Larry' (1964), Richard Amos 'Rick' (2010) and Thomas Leo 'Tommy' (2010). She is survived by her daughter Laurel Ruth Kovach and Laurel's husband Gene who she always embraced as another son; daughter-in-law Cherie Lee (Stevens) Kurtzworth, who also was like another daughter to her, daughter-in-law, Lynn Kurtzworth, 7 grandchildren - Larry Kurtzworth, Carrie (Kurtzworth) Wiley (Bo), Kelly (Kovach) Good (Matthew), Lindsey (Kovach) Jones (Stephen), Aaron, Andrew & Adam Kurtzworth; and 11 great grandchildren, cousins, and numerous nieces & nephews. A mass of Christian burial was held at St Joseph's Church, Marietta, GA on Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Monsignor John Walsh, Pastor officiated. A memorial service in Ruth's home town of Derby NY is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2015, 11:30 a.m. at the First Church of Evans in Derby, NY, officiated by Pastor Steve Ridge, preceded by internment at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cheektowaga alongside her husband, Amos and baby son John; Section: V; Lot: 1440. ___________

Jessica brings a successful advertising background to her new position and is looking to use that experience as she starts her new role with CPOWNY. “My experience in newspapers goes as far back as 2000,” stated Martinkovic. “I was an account executive for the Buffalo News for 10 years.” Jessica believes in the advertising business that there are no borders. It’s really about building relationships with the customers and the community and presenting products and advertising solutions that will work for all parties involved. “I think advertising and business relationships don’t really have any borders,” stated Martinkovic. “I’m a people person and always have been. I like to talk to people. I like to get people talking about their business, their passion, and what they like.” While community based papers remain strong, Jessica knows fresh, new, outlooks and ideas to keep customers and readers invested in the papers will be an ongoing focus. “Generating results for the advertisers is the name of the game,” stated Martinkovic. “We need to continue to figure out new products, or new ways to go to the market with the same products. She also is heavy into fitness. “I’m kind of a fitness freak. So, I like to work out,” she stated. “But, I have two small children, so I don’t have a lot of spare time. I don’t have a lot of hobbies lately. Spending time with my family and taking care of my kids has taken up a lot of my time.” Jessica resides with her husband, Christopher, and two children, in Snyder. No Quick Fix For Belly Fat DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an old man (84) with a middle-age paunch (5 feet, 7 inches tall and weigh 200 pounds) who needs to fit into a suit with pants an inch too tight in time for a wedding in a few weeks. About how many pounds do I need to lose to fit into them? Is there any formula for converting waist inches to pounds? And are there exercises or other means to focus the weight loss on belly fat? -- Anon. ANSWER: I am afraid there’s no formula. Further, I have to tell you that weight doesn’t always come off where we want it to, and specific exercises aren’t going to make the fat come off in those locations. The good news is that for most people, especially men, the first 10 pounds or so to come off usually comes from the middle. The fat in the omentum (an apronshaped structure inside the abdomen) is metabolically active and often is the first place where fat is gained or lost. Moreover, that fat is the most likely to increase risk of heart disease. So losing weight around your middle is a good way of improving overall health, especially if you have more inches there than you’d like. Often people start a healthy diet and exercise program and find that the waist size decreases but their weight stays the same. That may be because muscle is much heavier than fat, and the increase in muscle mass makes up for the loss of fat. More muscle is good for you; less body fat is good for you. Weight is an imperfect measure.

Liposuction can remove fat from around your waist, but a healthy diet and regular exercise will make you feel better and quite possibly live longer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I injured my little finger in an athletic event. The end of my pinky pointed in toward the ring finger. It is black and blue, and swollen. Do you think I fractured it? Should I get an X-ray? I am still able to curl my finger. -- A.J. ANSWER: It’s most likely that you damaged one of the tendons in the finger. Sometimes a fracture can happen at the same time. Most often, these are treated conservatively, with ice right after the injury and the finger splinted in a straight position for up to six weeks. Only an experienced physician, such as a hand surgeon, can provide

exact recommendations. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When you are instructed to take medicine, vitamin, etc., on an empty stomach, how long after eating should you wait? Also, if taken before eating, how long after you take the medication until you can eat? -- B.H. ANSWER: It depends on the particular medication. For example, the osteoporosis drug alendronate (Fosamax) should be taken after an overnight fast, with plain water (even mineral water can affect its absorption) and then no food for a half hour. Different medications have different requirements. Your pharmacist remains your best resource, and often has both more training and experience than doctors. In general, most vitamins should be taken with food.
