MY FRIENDS IN BRANT “Just a note to let you know how much I appreciate all your support and encouragement during my first time running in the Republican Primary for the Brant Town Board. We came very close to winning that contest! Yes, I am a “newbie”, and my feet are now wet wading through the shoal waters of politics; however, I am no stranger to community service and helping the residents of Brant. I have been quite active as a member of the Brant Planning Board, the Brant Board of Assessor’s Review, and the Brant Senior Citizens’ Organization. I also attend over 90% of Brant Town Board meetings to stay current and informed about issues that affect ALL of us! The journey continues, and I am no quitter! My name WILL be on the ballet this November on Election Day! I humbly ask voters of all Party Affiliations to join me on the “Conservative Line” with their vote. Now this is one piece of research I can really get behind: Exercising less than the recommended 30 minutes a day still has benefits. Until now, 30 minutes a day (or 150 minutes a week) of moderate exercise has been the gold standard. It was shown to reduce the average risk of death by 30 percent. However, new research has shown that the recommended level of exercise didn’t consider the needs and health of seniors -- more than 60 percent of whom weren’t up to doing that much exercise (and were therefore likely to

be discouraged from trying at all). A French study monitored the health and activity levels of seniors over the age of 65 for 13 years. The results were as follows: Those who did the 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (for example, brisk walking) had a 57 percent lower risk of death. That’s significantly more than the 30 percent previously calculated for that level of exercise. The big news, however, for those of us who aren’t fans of exercise, is that 15 minutes a day, five days a week,

is a good target for seniors. That can include swimming, riding a bike, brisk walking, dancing, ping-pong, badminton -- anything that gets you moving for 15 minutes. Granted, that 15 minutes a day (or 75 minutes per week) only gets you a 22 percent lower risk for mortality, but it’s a start. My theory: Once we start with that 15 minutes, we’re likely to increase it a little at a time. Bump that up a few minutes per day, and we can raise that to a 51 percent lower risk. Southtowns Catholic School Studies Crayfish Students at Southtowns Catholic School are beginning a unit on Crayfish. The unit is a part of the STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math) initiative at the Diocese of Buffalo. STREAM emphasizes interdisciplinary, hands on learning, especially in Science. Students began the unit discussing habitats and humane treatment. They will continue.to study and write about what crayfish eat, how they breathe, what senses they use and will use their inquiry and process skills to generate additional questions and comparisons of this species. High School Student Selected for National Honors Ensemble Senior, Lauren Henning, has just been given the chance of a lifetime to go perform with students from all over the country in Nashville, Tennessee. This journey started last spring when she received a letter from NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) that she was eligible to apply for this honor due to last year’s acceptance into Conference All State. Lauren then had to complete a long application and audition process to submit to the national selection committee. She was notified this summer about her selection into this year’s ensemble. The national honors ensembles are in conjunction with the national NAfME (National Association for Music Education) teacher’s conference. Lauren will be going to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Conference Center in Nashville on October 25th for the conference. While there she will be attending rehearsals, concerts, speakers, and events with other students from all over the country. This event will conclude with a concert on October 28th. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and we at Eden are very proud of Lauren and her accomplishments. ___________

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Eder; four sons, Ken Eder & wife, Patti of Carthage; Robert Eder & wife, Barbara of North Collins, NY; Mike Eder & wife, Sherri of Carthage and Joseph Eder & wife, Karla of North Collins, NY; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Credit Report Changes a Win for Consumers If you’ve ever struggled to have incorrect credit information ďŹ xed at one of the big three credit bureaus, or if you’ve been turned down for credit or housing due to that bad information, you’ll appreciate the changes that are coming. The attorney general for the state of New York has negotiated consumer protections with the big three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Those changes eventually will apply in the other states. Here are some highlights of the changes that are coming: ÂĽ You’ll have a say. In the past, credit bureaus have simply taken the word of banks, lenders and creditors that you owed a certain amount of money ... even if you didn’t. Consumers were left to work through the automated maze to try to get corrections made. Now, if you dispute something on your credit report, the bureaus will be required to use specially trained employees to check the information. ÂĽ You can submit documentation online. Best bet: Don’t. Send paper copies by mail. Choices in the dropdown online menus might be limiting. ÂĽ You can get an extra free updated report if changes

have been made after dispute resolution. To get your ďŹ rst free annual reports, go to www.AnnualCreditReport.com, or call (877) 322-8228. Hint: Order one every quarter from a different credit bureau. ÂĽ One of the biggest changes involves medical bills. Community Papers of Western New York (CPOWNY) recently announced the hiring of Jessica Martinkovic as the new Retail Advertising Sales Manager. Jessica brings a successful advertising background to her new position and is looking to use that experience as she starts her new role with CPOWNY. “My experience in newspapers goes as far back as 2000,â€? stated Martinkovic. “I was an account executive for the Buffalo News for 10 years.â€? Jessica believes in the advertising business that there are no borders. It’s really about building relationships with the customers and the community and presenting products and advertising solutions that will work for all parties involved. “I think advertising and business relationships don’t really have any borders,â€? stated Martinkovic. “I’m a people person and always have been. I like to talk to people. I like to get people talking about their business, their passion, and what they like.â€? While community based papers remain strong, Jessica knows fresh, new, outlooks and ideas to keep customers and readers invested in the papers will be an ongoing focus. “Generating results for the advertisers is the name of the game,â€? stated Martinkovic. “We need to continue to ďŹ gure out new products, or new ways to go to the market with the same products. We will always be trying to ďŹ nd new revenue streams inside, and outside, the paper.â€? When she is not at work, Jessica is home raising her two children, Emma (8) and Eva (5). She also is heavy into ďŹ tness. “I’m kind of a ďŹ tness freak. So, I like to work out,â€? she stated. “But, I have two small children, so I don’t have a lot of spare time. I don’t have a lot of hobbies lately. Spending time with my family and taking care of my kids has taken up a lot of my time.â€? Jessica resides with her husband, Christopher, and two children, in Snyder. Community Papers of Western New York operates 26 newspapers and pennysavers that serve Erie and Niagara County.
