2014 Communities Gone Green Awarded On December 4th 2014, Friends & Neighbors Advocating Better Green Living (FNABGL) presented their 2014 Communities Gone Green Award to the Erie County Legislature. All districts received a Certificate to of Recognition. Legislator John Mills (sponsor) and Legislator Lynn Dixon (co-sponsor) were presented with plaques. The Town of Evans was represented by Supervisor Keith Dash. FNABGL was represented by Bob & Judy Palmer, Dave Stout, Ed Schneider and Bill Henry. The award was presented for the promotion of solar energy by the unanimous vote to remove the sales tax on commercial solar equipment in 2013 and residential solar equipment in 2008. Erie County has become a top producer of solar electric in New York State. As a result of these laws, many new jobs will be created in Erie County, a leader in Clean Solar Energy. Boys and Girl Club Member of the Month The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Wyatt Lingsweiler, Alex Duffy, and Ryleigh Zielkiewicz as December’s Members of the Month (MOTM). Every month, Club Staff deliberate and choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports, games, Daily Challenges, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. This is Wyatt Lingsweiler’s first year at the Club and he is in third grade at John T. Waugh Elementary. Mrs. Kromer is his favorite teacher and physical education is his favorite subject. Wyatt’s favorite food is pizza and his favorite movie is Ratatouille. At the Club, Wyatt loves the games room and the various activities and games offered there. In his free time, he enjoys visiting his grandmothers and riding four-wheelers and snowmobiles. Wyatt is a well-rounded Club member, is extremely polite to staff and other members, is always on his best behavior, and is very even-keeled and easy-going. This month the staff felt that two girls, Alex and Ryleigh, were worthy of sharing the member of the month honor due to an extremely honest and considerate act. While walking to the club, the girls discovered a wallet outside. The girls brought it to the staff with the hopes of tracking down the owner. It was discovered that the wallet had been lost during the November Storm and the owner was incredibly grateful that the girls chose to do the right thing by turning it in. This type of quality character action by the girls is what we at the Club would like all of our members to strive for and we wanted to highlight such a deserving story. Alex Duffy is in sixth grade at Lake Shore Middle School. Her favorite subject is art, her favorite food is hamburgers, and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Galenda. Alex likes coming to the Boys and Girls Club because she likes the chance to hang out with friends. When she’s not at the Club she enjoys playing outdoors. When it comes to reading, her favorite book is The Lightning Thief. Ryleigh Zielkiewicz is also in sixth grade at Lake Shore Middle. Her favorite thing to do at the Club is hang out with friends and play outside. In her spare time she enjoys drawing and she is a fan of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series. Her favorite subject is ELA, her favorite food is pizza logs, and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Gollnitz. Also pictured with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the month, Abby Browning. Abby is a new addition to the club this year and was chosen to be the Student of the Month because of her dedication to her school work and for earning the most points in Power Hower (homework/educational activities club). Abby is in fourth grade at A.J. Schmidt Elementary. Mrs. Kunkel is Abby’s favorite teacher and her favorite subject is physical education. Abby loves reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series by Jeff Kinney. When Abby is at the Club she likes spending her time in the games room. Lance Harrison Receives Local Hall of Fame Honor Former Lake Shore Physical Education Teacher and Coach Lance Harrison was recently inducted into the WNY Boys Volleyball Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place at Ilio Dipaolo’s restaurant at the annual volleyball coaches and officials banquet. Lance was inducted by former player and current assistant coach William Anderson. Lance coached boys’ volleyball at Lake Shore from 19811987, 1989-1993. It was during this time period that Coach Harrison developed the boys volleyball program into a powerhouse. Under Coach Harrison the boys program had a league record of 138-2, a league undefeated streak of 1280, 11 Division titles, 6 Sectional titles, 1 Super sectional title, and 3 Far West Regional titles. After some time off, Lance returned to coaching, this time as the Varsity coach for the girls’ volleyball program. Lance coached the girls in 1995, 1996 and in 2000. In this time period the girls program had a record of 123-15, 3 Sectional Titles, 3 Far West Regional titles, and 2 New York State Championships. Coaching to Lance was much more than the X’s and O’s of the game, it was also about teaching his players to be better people, to be committed, to be disciplined, and to have an understanding that if you are going to do something, do it correctly. Lance instilled confidence in his players and motivated them to accomplish things that they themselves did not feel they were capable of doing. Coach Harrison made the process of getting better more important than the result. He stressed preparation and the attention to detail. Success for Coach Harrison came as a result of hard work, competitiveness, and the understanding that learning is a nonstop cycle which is carried on for a lifetime. Linda Allen is originally from the state of Michigan. She is a proud alumnus of Michigan’s Adrian College where she met her late husband David. After college they spent a brief time living in Cleveland and then moved to Angola for careers. Linda started her family here and has two children, son Michael and daughter Kim. Both Michael and Kim are graduates of Lake Shore Central School District and have successful careers respectively in Washington D.C. and Redding California. Linda began her career with Lake Shore CSD in 1995 as a Clerk Typist in the Transportation Department. Her dedication to the yellow bus prompted her to become a New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Article 19-A Certified Examiner. In 2003 Linda achieved her certification as a New York State Education Department School Bus Driver Instructor. Linda’s outstanding communication and organization skills make her an irreplaceable asset to the yellow bus industry. She is an active member of the New York State Association of Pupil Transporters and has served on the Board of Directors at both the local and state level. Linda’s work ethic and dedication to our school district is outstanding. Parents and students alike know her as the voice on the other end of the phone in the Transportation Department at 5:30 AM. She supports and stays very involved with the First Church of Evans. While she enjoys white water rafting and bicycling, bowling is a challenge. Linda is a very valuable member of the Lake Shore Central Schools team and an asset to our community.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Boyhood” (R) -- Over the course of 12 years, director Richard Linklater made a film about growing up in which we get to see an actor age. Mason (Ellar Coltrane) lives with his mom (Patricia Arquette) and his spastic older sister (Lorelei Linklater). Every so often, their rolling-stone dad (Ethan Hawke) comes back around to teach the kid a lesson about being a man or voicing his feelings. It’s a big story told in a series of small moments. Starting when he was just 7 years old, Ellar Coltrane worked on the film shoot with Linklater for a little while each summer. The result is Mason’s comingof-age story, in which we see how a contemplative boy caught between his estranged parents changes over years. It may not be the most life-altering story, but it truly is a unique moviewatching experience. “Get On Up” (PG-13) -James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, lived one of those lives made for musical biopics. He grew up impoverished in a dusty part of Georgia with an abusive father (Lennie James) and a mother who walked out (Viola Davis). Chadwick Boseman (the lead in last year’s Jackie Robinson biopic, “42”), brings Brown to life with a crackling energy and fervent commitment. Director Tate Taylor (“The Help”) shows the highs, lows and explosive performances that defined the man. Behind the scenes, Brown could be a tyrant and a monster consumed by drugs and ego, but a completely different vision comes out when he’s breaking himself down on stage. The wild use of flashbacks and uneven pacing can be

Nicolas Cage (oh yes) stars as Rayford Steele (cool name, bro), a morally impure airline pilot who gets left behind when the biblical rapture takes all of the good people to heaven. He’s flying a commercial jet over the Atlantic ocean when a bunch of people disappear, leaving only empty clothes behind. Rayford has to safely land the plane -- which seems pretty difficult, even though he’s a pilot -- while his college-age daughter wanders a partially emptied New York City.
