Member of the Month at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Kaliana Palmer and Lawrence Baron as February’s Members of the Month (MOTM). Every month Club Staff deliberate and choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports and games, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. Kaliana is in Mrs. Preischel’s 5th grade class at John T. Waugh Elementary school. Kaliana’s favorite subject is science because she likes to do experiments. Her favorite hobby is ready and she enjoys reading the books in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. This is Kaliana’s first year at the Club. Kaliana is always smiling and excited to participate in the different programs that the Club has to offer. Her favorite thing to do at the Club is anything involving arts and crafts. Lawrence is a seventh grade student at the Lake Shore Middle School. His favorite teacher is Mr. Kowal and his favorite subject is gym. Lawrence has been a member at the Club for three years. He can always be counted on to lend a hand. He just put the brand new hockey nets together for the gym, which is his favorite room to participate in while he is at the Club. Lawrence’s favorite color is teal and he likes to listen to Eminem. Also pictured with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the month, Aquinnah (Quinn) Maybee. Quinn’s favorite teachers both share the name Andrea, Mrs. Ridolfi and Mrs. Wincenciak! Quinn is in first grade and just started attending the Club as soon as she turned seven years old. She was nominated for Student of the Month because of her dedication to getting her homework done and her polite behavior while she is in the Power Hour (homework) room. Quinn likes to read books from the Magic Tree House series. Like most little girls her favorite color is hot pink and her favorite hobby is riding her bike. Southtowns Catholic School Field Trip to Kleinhans

SCS Students in grades 3-5 went on a field trip to the Buffalo Philharmonic on Tuesday March 18th. At the show the students made connections between how an author writes a book with different parts and how a composer includes different parts in their music. This show was interactive and had the students do different hand gestures for different parts of the song, they also got to stand up and do movements to represent different parts of the song. Lake View Resident Joined Forensic Anthropology Team that Recovered Remains

A Mercyhurst University forensic anthropology team responded to the scene of a Chevron gas well explosion in Dunkard, Greene County, on Tuesday, March 4, to recover the remains of a missing contractor feared dead. The explosion, which occurred on Feb. 11, ignited a fire that burned for approximately a week. Lead forensic anthropologist Dennis Dirkmaat, Ph.D., and a team that included assistant professor Heather Garvin, Ph.D., 15 graduate students and two undergrads were provided access to the site only after it had been cooled and deemed safe. That was Tuesday, when they spent the day sifting through charred debris for remains of the explosion's lone fatality, believed to be Ian McKee, 27, a field technician, originally from Warren, but most recently living in Morgantown, W.Va. Megan Chapin, of Lakeview, was one of the students who assisted with the investigation. Dirkmaat said his team was able to recover evidence of burnt bone from the residue using specialized protocols for which Mercyhurst's Applied Forensic Sciences Department is well recognized. The team will conduct a full forensic anthropological analysis of the material in an attempt to confirm identification. Understanding the role of fire destruction in scenes involving victims is considered one of the more difficult investigative situations, said Dirkmaat, whose department several years ago received a grant from the National Institute of Justice to establish protocols for recovering and interpreting burned human remains. "Fire scenes are not something we are called to examine very often, but we are particularly well qualified for this type of recovery," said Dirkmaat, whose department lends its expertise to roughly 80 to 90 cases annually throughout Pennsylvania, and surrounding regions of New York and Ohio. Fire can alter and consume soft tissue and bone to such an extent that forensic pathological analysis is limited, if not impossible, he said. The skilled foren-

sic anthropologist, however, is able to discern burnt bone from a vast array of debris. "Bone is composed of a mineral and organic component," Dirkmaat said, "Even when the collagen is burned away, the mineral component of bones remains and we have the expertise to find them, identify them as bone, and even differentiate between human and animal bone." As somber an exercise as it is, Dirkmaat said there is satisfaction in being able to recover remains and bring closure to a grieving family. Further, Tuesday's recovery was an opportunity for Mercyhurst students to engage in a hands-on learning opportunity that served to heighten their experience levels in a challenging aspect of forensic anthropology. Dirkmaat typically assembles a team of graduate students to take with him on recoveries, but recently enacted a policy to allow select undergraduates with appropriate coursework and demonstrated skills to be part of the team. This time, he took two: Sara Rapp and Jacob Griffin. "Being able to go on the recovery was a fantastic educational opportunity," Griffin said. "I came to Mercyhurst all the way from Iowa because I loved the school and wanted to be able to help with casework. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life, so being able to get this hands-on experience as an undergrad is priceless." Lending the perspective of a grad student, Rachel Murphy said, "The opportunity to be so involved in forensic archaeological recoveries is not an experience that graduate students typically get in a master's program. Being able to apply techniques and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations is an important aspect of becoming a professional. I know these hands-on experiences will prepare us to assist with various kinds of death investigations in the future." Contributed by Mercyhurst University ___________

Lake Shore Central Schools (Evans-Brant Central School District) Transportation Requests Due

New York State Education law requires that requests for special transportation be filed with local Boards of Education by April 1st each year. Private Parochial Request Forms are available on our website, www.lakeshorcsd.org, under “Services”, “Transportation Services”, and click on “Forms”. Once the proper form is completed, it should be submitted to the District’s Transportation Office located at 8710 North Main Street, Angola, NY 14006. This announcement has been published to alert parents of such students, or prospective students, to inquire as to the procedure to be used if they are not clear relative to the required April 1st annual transportation request filing deadline. Celebrating Pi Day

Middle school students at SS. Peter & Paul Community School in Hamburg celebrated Pi day on Friday, March 14. Pi Day is an annual celebration commemorating the mathematical constant π. Pi Day is observed on March 14, because the 3, 1, and 4 are the three most significant digits of π in the decimal form. To celebrate students had a contest to see who knew the majority of the digits in the repeating mathematical figure. Pictured from left is first place winner Nathan Lane, second place winner Angeleah Lograsso and third place winner Caitlin DeMaria. Contributed by SS. Peter & Paul Community School __________
