Attention Veterans On Saturday April 26th at 11 am the Newcomb-Long Post 928 will sponsor the film “Honor Flight Movie” at the Angola theater. The movie does not have actors but real people who started Honor Floght and four (4) W.W.II veterans who tell of their experiences in the service and their one day trip to Washington to see the W.W.II Memorial. Every veteran, his family and friends should see this emotional film. W.W.II veterans are now in their late 80s and 90s and are passing daily by the hundreds. With Memorial day approaching, teachers and older students should also see this film, it’s a very educational film. Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the Post in Derby or at the Theater on the 26th until sold out. All proceeds go directly to Honor Flight Buffalo so our local W.W.II vets get the opportunity to enjoy this one day trip.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are, my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer for your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish, and it will be granted to you. Grateful thanks. D.M.S

Finding the Perfect Care for Your Pets

Funeral Home That Gives Proper Goodbye For Pets

Pet Heaven Funeral Home gives pet owners a choice for their pets cremation and after-life services. No longer do owners have to worry about their pet that is sick or has passed. If you ask animal lovers to name the worst day of their lives, many will say it was when their pet died. Joe and Mona Wales have owned and operated Pet Heaven in Orchard Park for over six years. “We understand the feeling that our clients experience because we have felt it ourselves. We work hard to make the difficult experience of parting with a pet less painful.” The funeral home is more than a business for the couple. While they have business hours Monday through Friday, they are available on a 24-hour basis to assist clients in need. They will pick up your pet at your home or Veterinary Hospital and can even arrange a Veterinarian to euthanize your beloved companion at your home. Pet Heaven has two private, formal viewing rooms for clients to say their final goodbyes before cremation. Many varieties of urns and other bereavements products are on display in their office. Perhaps as important as dealing with the reality of a pets death is the emotional support Joe and Mona provide. It is not unusual for Joe to guide clients through the entire process, from talking with people whose pets are ill to lending an ear afterwards. “People call for advice because they have a connection with you. It’s not unheard of to talk with a client for forty minutes”, Mona said. They initiated a “Pet Obituary” in The Buffalo News to memorialize the passing of their clients pets. Joe and Mona insist that they are spending their retirement in this unique business because pet owners need compassion during this difficult time. Pet Heaven is located at 3604 North Buffalo Road, Orchard Park, N.Y. 662-LOSS (5677) or www.PetHeavenFuneralHome.com. Contributed by Pet Heaven Funeral Home ____________

Every time you turn around, there is a new "resource" and "list of recommendations" of what to do, look for, where to go, what to do. They all seem to conflict. I understand your frustration. The truth is not every place is right for every pet. The same guidelines apply to daycare as to boarding. Stop in and visit the entire facility. Be considerate. Don't judge harshly if appointments are required. Visits disrupt the "Zen." My perspective is different than many pet owners and businesses but not isolated; it is behavior motivated. I look for a dog's adaptation to a home environment. Some dogs cannot reach a comfort level in another dog's home; some cannot adapt to a traditional kennel. Daycares are the same way. Different set-ups and different employees/owners can dictate the dog's comfort level. All the parts make a whole. A few things I would add to this link below are: predictable schedules; enrichment equipment to break dogs into smaller groups; quiet spaces for the timid, tiny, senior and special-needs; emergency plans; WORKING vet relationships, ongoing education in the human-animal bond, at minimum. If a facility takes in fosters, make sure the dogs able to be isolated from the others. Many communicable diseases are viral and/or air-borne and fosters ideally have been isolated 14-21 days before exposure to other established animals. Home boarding is illegal unless they are legally zoned and have a business license… for a reason. Don't be fooled by what's trending, it is trendy. Don't be fooled by cut-paste reviews. Do your research and look for reviews on-line from actual users over a balance of time. www.thedoggurus.com/how-do-i-find-a-good-trainer-daycare-or-kennel/ Contributed by Susan Ferry, A Pawsitive Experience __________

Four-Legged Family Members

Our pets are our family. We pamper them, care for them, and love them as much as they love us! Having them in our lives brings joy and happiness to us, it only makes sense that we would want what is best for our pets health and their well-being. Choosing a quality nutrition, providing adequate exercise and socialization, as well as routine trips to the Veterinarian for check-ups are just a few things that pet owners are responsible for providing. Having pet professionals you can trust is a part of the puzzle. For instance, a quality daycare or boarding kennel you can rely on, a patient groomer, a knowledgeable Veterinarian, these are just a few of the businesses you’ll want to have in your corner providing exceptional care for your pets. There are a lot of factors that come in to play when it comes to maintaining your pet’s overall health. Most people automatically think of veterinary care as the main ingredient, so I’d like to focus on that topic. In Western New York, there are many veterinary practices to choose from, all of which have different things to offer and specialize in. It’s important to feel comfortable with whatever Veterinarian you choose, as you will be having a life-long relationship with them and entrusting your pet’s health in their hands--in all aspects of that term. Find out what their business hours are, do their hours fit in to your schedule should you need to utilize their services? If your pet is having an emergency, are you able to be seen fairly quickly, or do they have a partner that they work with that could assist you or redirect you to another facility? What vaccination protocol do they believe in? What type of medicine do they practice? Are they capable of providing routine care only, or specialized in-house and over-night care? Are they comfortable handling your specific breed of animal, and are they knowledgeable on that breed and it’s needs? As a testimony to finding the right Veterinarian for your pet’s needs, I’d like to share a story of one of our staff’s pets. Leland is a 2 year old Saint Bernard that was suffering from continual infections, polydipsia, and urination since he was a puppy. Leland experienced a “medical crisis” this past year, and as a result of continual misdiagnosis, he almost lost his life. Claire, Leland’s mom, did some investigating and decided to switch to a new Veterinarian that had experience dealing with larger breeds and emergency care. Upon doing so, Claire was finally given a firm diagnosis that Leland suffered from a somewhat rare disease called Addisons, and embarked on a new successful treatment plan that ultimately saved his life. Our pets rely on us. It’s up to us to make the best choices for them if we want them to live long, happy, and healthy lives as our furry companions. I would encourage pet owners to ask questions and to consider finding the right pet care professionals for their unique situation. Not every pet is the same, every pet’s needs are different. The best choice for them isn’t always the most expensive choice, nor is it the least expensive choice in their overall care. The best choice for our pets is the one that we feel the most comfortable with, it’s the one that we would want for ourselves.

2014 Prom Planner Prom night dos and don’ts

A milestone event in a young adult’s life, prom night is an occasion high school seniors across the country anxiously anticipate. Prom gives high school students the opportunity to enjoy one last fling with friends and fellow students before they move on to college or enter the workforce. Prom night has become quite a big deal. Some students put undue pressure on themselves by trying to make prom into the perfect occasion. This can prove stressful. But there are ways to make the best of this noteworthy night without succumbing to stress. DO attend prom with someone you enjoy being around. Don’t pick a companion simply to have a pretty face accompany you for the evening. Aim for compatability when choosing your prom date. You do not want to be dancing all night while your date stays at the table. DON’T set your prom night expectations too high. Prom night is a momentous occasion, but it’s important to keep in mind that it’s meant to be a fun night with friends. Aim to do a little dancing, dining and conversing with friends. DO wear comfortable shoes or bring a spare pair of comfortable shoes along. Fashion often precedes comfort when it comes to formal events. However, hours on the dance floor can quickly prove painful on your feet. Do yourself a favor and dress comfortably so you will not have to make an exit prematurely. DON’T make prom night about more than having fun. This should be an evening simply for having fun and commemorating the end of your school career rather than a night when potentially life-altering decisions are made. DO stick to a budget so you do not overspend on prom night. It can be easy to overspend on prom. While prom is meant to be memorable, you don’t want to begin summer vacation in debt. Now is a key time to learn budgeting strategies, which will be advantageous when you’re living in a dorm and pinching pennies once college begins in the fall. DON’T forget to take plenty of photos and videos to capture the spirit of prom. You can look back fondly on these moments and perhaps share them with your own family in the years to come. DO have a contingency plan in place. Sometimes poor judgement on the part of others can put you in precarious situations. Make sure you have someone to call if you need a ride home at any point in the night. Bring some extra money for unforseen expenses. Keep parents abreast of your location in the event you need to contact them. Safety should be a priority throughout the night. DON’T feel the need to have a date, especially if you’d rather attend solo. There is no shame in attending prom alone, particularly if you have a plan to meet up with friends and enjoy the night collectively. Rather than take someone you do not particularly like and feel restricted, arrive alone and enjoy being a free spirit. DO let loose and have fun. Don’t be afraid to cut a rug on the dance floor or wear a favorite gown or unique style of tuxedo. Enjoy your time spent with friends and try to sample each part of what makes prom such a unique experience.

Southtowns Catholic School Relief Sculptures

Students in Mrs. Walkowski's grade 2 art class are learning about Relief Sculptures and spring birds. A relief sculpture is a type of sculpture that is part of a wall, or hanging on a wall, that is two and threedimensional. The 3D portion of their picture is the nest an the 2D are the birds. While the students built their sculpture, Mrs. Walkowski told them about how birds build their nests, lay their eggs and eventually the baby birds learn to fly. This is also part of the Grade 2 Spring Science Curriculum. Pictured: Alex Davis, Jordan Mancuso, Kaylee Dodson, Emma Labby, Gloria Ciccarella, Cailum Irwin, Ava Dzubella, Riley Jones & Grace Crupe. SS. Peter & Paul Community School goes Blue4Ben

The entire SS. Peter & Paul Community School recently went Blue4Ben. Pictured above is the school student body, along with faculty and staff who dressed in blue in honor of Ben Sauer, who is a 4-year-old who was recently diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. His parents would always dress him in blue, to separate him from his twin brother, Jack. So in honor of him, we wore blue as well. Contributed by SS. Peter Paul Community School ___________

Southtowns Catholic School visits the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph

Second graders at Southtowns Catholic School had the opportunity to spend the morning with the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in Hamburg. The second graders sang a Lenten song, made stained glass crosses and read stories to the Franciscan Sisters. At the end of their visit, they were given a tour of the beautiful facility. It was a very peaceful and meaningful morning for the class. When they returned to school, many asked to add the sisters to our classroom "Prayer Corner."

Inspirational Mural Creation

An amazing transformation has taken place on the Sixth Grade floor of Lake Shore Middle School. With the vision and support of Lake Shore graduate and local artist Ramon Dennis, a number of students worked collaboratively to create a 40’ x 10’ wall mural consisting of five puzzle pieces connected by a tree branch. Each puzzle piece tells a story of our past, present and future by depicting the idea that we are partners within a global community; as well as individuals within our school community. A number of Sixth Grade students worked diligently with Ramon creating and executing the design. Throughout the process, the students not only learned artistic techniques of mural painting, they learned through Ramon’s example, to follow your dreams and not let obstacles stop you. Despite a childhood accident which resulted in the loss of Ramon’s hands, he is living his dream of being an artist! “Every time I walk by our mural, it makes me smile.” said Six Grader Elisabeth Van Scoter. “ I think working on the mural helped me and other students feel connected to the school a little more. It felt more like a school project working on the mural then just a class gift. I really want to do one again. ” “Working with Ray was a fun enjoyable experience for everyone. I was amazed at what Ray could do!” commented Sixth Grader Michael Hamm. The inspiration and support for the mural originated from the Class of 2019 and 2020 Officers. The Middle School community is grateful to Ramon for inspiring so many students and for leaving the Middle School an important legacy gift that epitomizes the positive spirit of our community! Truly this mural will be enjoyed by many for years to come. The theme: A prominent puzzle piece embraces the idea that we are part of a global community and depicts the world encased within our Solar System. The next two puzzle pieces capture the heart of our community. The first piece highlights the sense of community and revitalization found within the Village of Angola. The second piece embraces our most beautiful natural asset, the Lake Erie shoreline. The students also wanted to incorporate and highlight various elements of our Lake Shore School community within the mural. Their motivation created the theme for another puzzle piece which features athletic symbols, art and music insignia, and Native American cultural opportunities. The final puzzle piece summarizes the essence of the mural. This piece features a graduation cap, an open book and an apple symbolizing how the seeds of knowledge become the key to understanding our past, present and future. Former Evans Man Authors The Reluctant Aviator

Former Evans resident Mike Stock, a decorated Navy combat chopper pilot, test pilot, airline pilot, and bush pilot, has published Volume 1 of a memoir beginning with his days as a child on Bennett Road, through his ‘reluctant’ entry into the world of aviation, and culminating with a hair-raising tour of duty as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam. His recounting of his combat experiences rivals anything in the Vietnam literature. The book, which will be followed by a Volume 2, ends with his assignment post-Vietnam as a helicopter ferry pilot between the east and west coasts of the United States. He recounts some Evans-related action, such as an unauthorized drop-in with the second-largest helicopter in the world to his brother David’s backyard on Sturgeon Point Road, and his well-intentioned but unsuccessful aerial role in a patriotic celebration at Angola’s Forest Avenue cemetery. The son of Alyce and the late Sam Stock, Mike attended the Evans Center schoolhouse that currently serves as the Town of Evans Historical Society museum before going on to graduate from MPB and later St. Francis High School. The 335-page memoir is available at amazon.com. Contributed by Kevin H. Siepel __________

Principal has head shaved to encourage reading efforts

Students at SS. Peter & Paul Community School in Hamburg will had a unique treat recently during their Catholic Charities Carnival. School Principal Patrick Riester agreed in February that if the students read 150,000 minutes in 40 days (by Friday, March 28) he would reward their hard work and dedication by shaving his head. As part of the conclusion for the Catholic Charities Carnival, Riester fulfilled his promise to his students and had bis head shaved. Middle school student Devin McDonnell had the honor of providing the first cut. In the past Riester has also allowed students to slime him with green goo in an effort to reward the students and their reading efforts. Pictured above is Riester getting his head shaved by Devin McDonnell. Contributed by SS. Peter Paul Community School
