LEGO Robotics at the Boys & Girls Club The Lake Shore Club recently kicked o its second LEGO Robotics class of this school year and the kids have been plenty busy, as you can see! The LEGO Robotics program is a grant-funded opportunity thanks to Pizza Hut and their "Raising Dough For Kids" campaign. The members that participate meet every Thursday from 4:30-5:30 PM and are able to select various projects that they work on. Then they follow the instructions that describe/show how to assemble the mechanical creations, all the while learning and utilizing science, math, technology, and engineering concepts. The kids' vote for the ďŹ rst project of this session was a "Walker" bot that they built and tested its rate of walking speed, facing o in competition. In all, there are over 15 dierent projects the members can select from with these LEGO Robot kits. The kids are doing a great job and we can't wait to see their next creations! Southtowns Catholic School Learns About Seeds The students in Kindergarten are learning all about seeds and the seeds life expectancy before it sprouts into a seedling. The Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Carrier Educational Center’s ProStartÂŽ team recently placed ďŹ rst in the “Taste of Educationâ€? Culinary Competition held at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens in Depew, NY. The students prepared and presented a unique and vast menu based on a “PaciďŹ c Rimâ€? theme and edged out three other culinary programs from the Western New York area. The team was assisted by other students enrolled in the Culinary Arts/ Hospitality Management program. Christian Baratta (Lake Shore), James Moores (Eden), Tadora Logan (Lake Shore), Zach Congdon (Eden), Courtney Morgan (Lake Shore), Kenneth Pisa (Silver Creek), and Zach Schmitz (Eden) made up the Carrier ProStart teams. Joining them were Rania Anderson (Lake Shore), Cheyanne Doner (Silver Creek), Melinda Gates (Lake Shore), Kaitlyn Kleese ((Lake Shore), Emily Malette (Silver Creek), and Austin Smith (Lake Shore), They were led by Instructors Jim Kuras and Mentor Sandy Kaleta with the assistance of Nikki Kaleta. “We are extremely pleased to have taken ďŹ rst place at this event,â€? said Kuras, culinary arts instructor at the Carrier Center. “To go head to head with other top-notch culinary programs from this area is a tall order and our team put a lot of heart into this menu and presentation. You won’t ďŹ nd more dedicated students than those putting their classroom skills on display at competitions like this.â€? The Carrier team chose a variety of dishes highlighted by Macadamia-encrusted Tilapia with Asian Slaw, Smoked Trout with Crème Fraiche and Wasabi Caviar, Black Goma Asparagus and Micro Greens, and Pineapple Haupia just to name a few. This annual competition is sponsored by the WNYS Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (WNYSRAEF) and other local businesses. A panel of celebrity judges, including food critics, sampled all of the dishes and then scored each team’s dishes on taste and appearance. A separate “Iron Chef â€? competition took place during the rest of the event’s activities with Zach Schmitz taking second place alongside Chef Jon Wilson from Ralph Wilson Stadium. Working together, they went head-to-head with three other teams using secret ingredients in a timed contest that was also judged by the celebrity panel. Schmitz and Wilson took second place overall. “Our team is coming o a third-place ďŹ nish at the New York State ProStart competition, and that’s a lot of work right there,â€? added Kuras. “But these students push themselves to be the best they can and strive to show what they can do in the kitchen and under pressure. We are all proud of these students and their dedication to excellence. Voto spends Spring Break Volunteering in Chicago, Detroit and Toledo Patrice Voto of Lake View is one of 51 caring Baldwin Wallace University students who gave up 2016 Spring Break week to make a difference through BW's Alternative Break service program. The program facilitated five diverse trips with student volunteers traveling to Atlanta; Boston; Kansas City, Mo.; New Orleans; Toledo, Ohio; Detroit and Chicago. The trips were led by a BW student with a University faculty or staff adviser providing support. Voto, a graduate of Nardin Academy majoring in music education, volunteered to take part in the Alternative Break trip to Chicago, Detroit and Toledo, Ohio. The innovative trip took student volunteers through all three cities, exploring the realities of human trafficking and domestic violence. In Toledo, the BW senior had the opportunity to prepare lunches for Family House Toledo, the second largest family crisis center in Ohio, and connect with EleSondra DeRomano, survivor and founder of Standing Together Against Real Slavery (STARS). In Detroit, students spent a day with Freedom House learning about the resettlement process for refugees and asylum seekers, many of whom are vulnerable to trafficking. In Chicago, they volunteered with two shelters serving survivors of domestic violence. By the end of the week, students were informed, empowered and ready to take action. This year the A. J. Schmidt Physical Education classes once again teamed up with the American Heart Association and continued the Jump Rope for Heart program. The students were participating in a variety of jump roping skills and games in their regular Physical Education class. For two weeks the students were asked to fill out donation sheets both online and in cash form to help the American Heart Association. Many students did this for close relatives who had heart surgery or heart troubles. The school had a total of 101 students participating in the fundraising part of the Jump Rope for Heart program. The students raised a total of $4,670 for the American Heart Association in 2015. This year the goal was set to raise $5,000. The students surpassed that total raising $5,366. 18 students raised over $100 while their top student collected $763.
