Thanks to everyone for encouragement since my illness. I am home recovering. A special thank you to Mayor Vince George, Brenda Petrus, my friends in the North Collins Senior Citizen Club for we’re “old”, but we stick together. Boys and Girls Club Members of the Month

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Skyler Gierszewski and Tyler Griffin as April’s Members of the Month. Club Staff select members that have positive character values, are respectful, responsible, caring, and good citizens. The MOTM should also participate in various Club programs such as sports, games, arts & crafts, power hour, project learn, cooking club, club council, library and nature clubs, etc. Skyler has made quite an impression in her first full year at the Club and the staff overwhelmingly felt she was a worthy Member of the Month candidate. She is polite and respectful, caring and fun, well-behaved, and wellrounded. By attending the Club, Skyler makes it a better place to be! She is a fourth grader at Highland Elementary, Mr. Fitz is her favorite teacher, and she really likes math class. At the Club, Skyler enjoys participating in our new Photography Club the most (which she definitely has a knack for!). In her spare time, Skyler likes going to play at friends’ houses. She likes to read any books by her favorite author (Raina Telgemeier), and her favorite song is “Perfect” by One Direction. Skyler’s role model is her mother, and when she grows up she would like to be an actress or dance teacher. Tyler is in sixth grade at Lake Shore Middle School where he likes music class and Mrs. Muffeletto is his favorite teacher. His absolute favorite spots in the Club are the gym, where he likes shooting hoops and playing on the scooters, and the games room, where he likes to play Wii Sports. Tyler is beloved by all the staff and especially the kids, who go out of their way to participate in games that Tyler is playing. Unquestionably, Tyler has left a huge impact on all of our hearts and spreads plenty of smiles and laughs with his good nature and fun personality. In his free time, Tyler likes to play with his dinosaurs and watch The Muppets show. His favorite book is Where The Wild Things Are, and his favorite song is “We Will Rock You” by Queen! Tyler’s role models are his Papa and Kermit the Frog. As far as what he wants to be when he gets older, he’s still weighing his options, but all of us at the Club know he will be successful in whatever he chooses! Brook Borzelleri is the Club’s Student of the Month. Brook makes sure to get her homework done in our homework room nearly every day before she heads off to her other favorite club activities. She can often be found working with Miss Denise to get help on her math homework, and it is evident that she cares about doing a good job and getting it all correct. She actually notes that this is her favorite thing to do at the Club! Brook also enjoys participating in many of the staff-run activities like board games in the Lounge, and she is a frequent participant in the Arts & Crafts room too. Her favorite thing to do at home is play on her tablet. Brook attends A.J. Schmidt Elementary where Mrs. Ware is her favorite teacher, she is in third grade, and she loves math class. Brook’s favorite song out right now is “No” by Meghan Trainor. She loves reading anything by Dr. Seuss, her role model is her grandma, and when she grows up she would like to be teacher. Our Junior Staff of the Month is Lizzie Todaro-Tucker, a sixth grader at Lake Shore Middle School. Junior Staff work the Snack Shack and assist Club staff with chores and running activities. Lizzie does an excellent job of keeping other kids in line and alerting staff to any issues, problems, or any other important information (including anything they may forget!). Lizzie has a clear desire to help out in any way she can, and she gets plenty of joy from doing so. While she’s here at the Club, her favorite activity is playing on the computers in the computer lab. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Mattucci and math is her class of choice. In her free time, Lizzie enjoys playing XBox and Wii games. She likes the song “Rotten to the Core” and she loves reading Dr. Seuss, especially Are You My Mommy? Lizzie’s role model is the actress/singer Dove Cameron, and when she gets older she would like to become an astronaut. Evening with the Arts Held at A.J. Schmidt Elementary

In May, the talents of A.J. Schmidt students were showcased at the annual Evening with the Arts. The halls of the building were decorated with artwork from every student in the school. The fourth- and fifth-grade band, orchestra and chorus treated the audience to a concert of traditional and popular music. The principal of A.J. Schmidt, Mrs. Jill Clark even made a guest appearance with the band on crash cymbals! A book fair and basket raffle highlighted the evening. It was a great event where the many talents of A.J. Recently, the 2016 Bike Rodeo was held at J.T. Waugh Elementary School and was a success. Students participated in ten stations showing off their bicycle skills. Officer Joe LaRosa from the Evans Police Department volunteered his time to teach the children the correct helmet position while Jeff from Bert’s Bikes and Fitness performed safety checks on each bicycle. The two also donated water bottles and stickers to all the participants. Students were excited to meet both of them! The 2016 Rodeo winners were MacKenzie Bernhard, Lilly Kushner, Daniel Ramirez, Owen Herr, Xavier Wilson, Katsi Jackson, and Eric Kushner. Lock-In In a Box at Lake Shore Middle School

On a typical Thursday night when most teenagers could be found in front of the television or some other electronic device, a group of Lake Shore’s finest middle school students was living without. A group of thirty Community Service and Volunteerism/Leos Club (CS&V) members spent the evening walking the streets of the Village of Angola collecting returnable cans and bottles. The students then participated in a dance marathon and slept in cardboard boxes overnight. The students were making this sacrifice to develop a better understanding of a life without the luxuries that we often take for granted. The group is projected to have raised over $1,700 to be split between the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore, Friends of the Village, and Operation Good Neighbor. It’s a Doggie, Dog Day at J.T. Waugh Elementary

The students and faculty at J. T. Waugh Elementary School have contributed to their community once again. The school donated items, food, and money to "Buddy's Second Chance", an organization that finds homeless, abused and neglected shelter dogs new homes. The entire school also entered a writing and art contest sponsored by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The essays and posters focused on animals in our community, and J. T. Waugh earned an award for the most participants in Erie County. Additionally, Waugh had nine students place in the writing and art contest. The following students were recognized: Olivia Fitzpatrick, Dylan Joslyn, Mariah Joslyn, Kaylin Golembiewski, Shane Friend, Ella Skalski, Alexandria Kennedy, McKenzie Mascio, and Emilee Ramiez. Each student was presented a certificate, medal, and a cash prize after reading their essays during an awards reception.
