Tips for safe home grilling Exercise caution when firing up the grill. Many grilling accidents can be prevented by adhering to a few simple safety guidelines. Millions of grilling enthusiasts take to their backyards each year to cook delicious foods over an open flame. Many grilling accidents can be prevented with some safety precautions and a little common sense. When grilling, place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be at least 10 feet away from the house when they are in use. Also, keep the grill away from wooden overhangs or other structures attached to the house, such as garages and porches. Before using a gas grill, inspect it to make sure there are no gas leaks. Ensure hoses are properly connected and that the grill looks in good repair. Use propane and charcoal grills outdoors only. Never bring such grills into your house, even if it seems like there is ample ventilation. Potentially fatal carbon monoxide can build up quickly. Keep children and pets away from the grill area. Grills can be knocked over easily, and kids and pets may burn themselves if they bump into a hot grill.

Southtowns Catholic School Saves the Tadpoles SCS was invited to Cradle Beach Camp for "Save the Tadpole Day". This happens every year right before Cradle Beach drains their swimming pool for the new season. The kids took buckets and nets on their adventure. For 2 hours, the students and adults collected tadpoles, pollywogs, small toads and 1 baby snapping turtle and relocated them to Little Sister Creek. They never know how many will make it to adulthood but it's better than going down the drain. Southtowns Catholic School Field Trip to Fort Niagara SCS Students in Grade 6 & 7 took an end of the year field trip to Old Fort Niagara. The tour included a guide that gave a history of the Fort of an era when great empires struggled for control of North America. They visited the original 18th century buildings, enjoyed incredible views, took part in the living history programs that included a black smith and a loyalist and watched artillery firing demonstrations. The kids went into the Visitor Center and saw original artifacts and the Fort's original War of 1812 Flag. Pictured: The students as they entered the castle. Boys and Girls Club Members of the Month

Boys & Girls Club Hosts Successful Carnival Night & Award Ceremony! The Club is pleased to announce that a good time was had by all at our recent End-of-the-Year Carnival and Award Ceremony, held on Friday, June 17 at our Club facility (W.T. Hoag Educational Center). The Carnival was free to families in the community, including our own Club members. Each child that attended received tickets to play, and kids of all ages thoroughly enjoyed testing their luck and skills with a chance to earn tons of different prizes. The biggest draws were the bouncy Velcro Wall and Obstacle Course, providing plenty of fun and a good source for releasing some bottled up energy! We would like to thank all those in attendance, and hope for an even greater turnout next year! We’d also like to extend our gratitude to all of the volunteers and Club kids that helped make this event possible by giving up their time to help run the games. As for the Award Ceremony, all members and their families, along with any other interested community members, were welcome to stick around after the Carnival to enjoy the culminating celebration of our kids’ accomplishments throughout the school year. The kids receive awards for participating in many of the offerings that the Club provides, including Power Hour (Homework Club), Garden Club, Library Club, Art Club, Torch Club, Club Council, Healthy Cooking Club, and Running Club, to name a few. The kids were all very thrilled to receive awards honoring their hard work and dedication. Thanks to our grant opportunities from Pizza Hut’s Raising Dough For Kids Foundation, the Club was able to provide delicious food from Pizza Hut after the conclusion of the awards as a way to showcase some of the amazing projects that our members worked on as part of the grant-funded programs. These programs included our Photography Club and LEGO Robotics course, with the kids’ projects from each of these being featured and on display during the dinner portion of the evening. Known as “The Positive Place for Kids,” Boys and Girls Clubs provide guidance oriented programs on a daily basis for children 7-18 years old, conducted by a full-time professional staff. The Boys and Girls Club offers a varied and diversified youth development program. The Club relies heavily on fundraising events to continue running programs, and without the backing of our community members and local businesses that sustain our various functions, we would not be able to provide the excellent, engaging services that we do for the youth of Evans and surrounding areas. The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Paiton Michael and Dylon Hallick as May’s Members of the Month. Club Staff select members that have positive character values, are respectful, responsible, caring, and good citizens. The MOTM should also participate in various Club programs such as sports, games, arts & crafts, power hour, project learn, cooking club, club council, library and nature clubs, etc. Paiton is in her second year at the Club and brightens every room she enters. She has a good sense of humor, loves to laugh, is very well-behaved, and gets along with everyone, including staff. She is a second grader at Highland Elementary, Mrs. Hausrath is her favorite teacher, and she really likes science class. At the Club, Paiton most enjoys spending time with her favorite staff, Miss Erica. In her spare time, Paiton loves to play outside as much as she can. She likes to read Dork Diaries written by Rachel Rene Russell, and her favorite song is “Cheerleader” by OMI. Paiton’s role models include both of her parents, and when she grows up she would like to be a singer or cook. Dylon is in fourth grade at J.T. Waugh Elementary where he likes gym class and Miss Coleman is his favorite teacher. His absolute favorite spots in the Club are the gym and the games room, where he likes to play various video games. Dylon has an extremely easy-going nature so he gets along with everyone, and the staff never has any issues of any kind with him as he always follows the rules. Dylon is unflappable and is consistently in a good mood when he arrives at the Club. In his free time, Dylon likes to play outside – any outdoor activity will suit his fancy! Dylon’s absolute favorite video game to play at home is Grand Theft Auto. Dylon’s role models that he looks up to are his friends. When he gets older he’d like to be a policeman. Cameryn Rozmus is the Club’s Student of the Month. Cameryn is very good about getting all of his school work done when he attends the Club, but he still leaves himself plenty of time to enjoy the Club’s other activities on a daily basis. Cameryn has proven to be very studious and diligent and racks up plenty of homework points for completing assignments. His creativity and imagination have also impressed the Club staff. Cameryn enjoys participating in all that the Arts & Crafts room has to offer too. His favorite thing to do at home is play outside. Cameryn attends A.J. Schmidt Elementary where Mrs. Scholl is his favorite teacher, he is in third grade, and he loves science class. Cameryn’s favorite music to listen to is The Phoenix, he loves reading The Joke Book Pack 5, his role model is his brother Zander, and when he grows up he would like to be a video game creator. For their accomplishments, these members also receive a couple special gifts - a Lake Shore BGC shirt and a $5 Tim Horton’s gift card!
