Obituaries

DID YOU KNOW?

The government does not automatically seize the assets of a person who dies without leav‑ ing a will. When men and women die without a will, they leave what is known as intestacy. Should a person die with no next of kin, then the deceased’s assets will end up under gov‑ ernment control. When a person with family dies without a will, then a formula is used to allo‑ cate those assets. While this ensures a person’s assets will not go to the government, it does not ensure that a person’s assets will necessar‑ ily be distributed how they had hoped or in‑ tended. This highlights the importance men and women must place on creating a will while they are alive and updating that will as they see fit throughout their life.

DID YOU KNOW?

The piano was invented by Italy’s Bartolomeo Cristofori in the late 17th century and was designed to be a “harp‑ sichord that plays both softly and loudly.” Cris‑ tofori was a harpsichord maker and understood the workings of this type of instrument. Cristofori built only about 20 pi‑ anofortes before he died at the age of 75. How‑ ever, his design lived on and was replicated by other builders who put their own unique spins on the original concept. The piano remains a popular instrument among musicians and music afficionados to this day.

Congresswoman Kathy Hochul was not deterred by a near-monsoon. “I’m glad to be at the Evans Democratic Club picnic,” she announced as she was welcomed to the annual event by Town Chair Robert “Bob-cat” Catalino, Sr. in the early afternoon of Sunday, August 5. The picnic started during a thunderstorm interrupting the summer drought. Hochul welcomed the rain, given the parched condition across much of her rural district. Hochul’s relationship with Evans goes back to when she was County Clerk and her oversight included the DMV office in the Evans Town Hall. Given the redistricting of the Congressional seats, Evans will now be in Hochul’s Congressional district instead of being in Hon. Brian Higgins’ district. She is running for re-election this fall. By three o’clock the skies had cleared and the potluck picnic proceeded in sunshine, with the usual offerings, and a variety of desserts, of which one was made by State Assembly candidate Christina Abt. Abt is a former Evans resident who ran an award-winning horse farm before moving to Eden. She is running in the newly formed 147th District. In addition to Congresswoman Hochul and Assembly candidate Abt, other local officials were there to meet with Evans voters. This included candidates for County Democratic Chair Jeremy Zellner and Jim Eagan. Also attending was Dennis Ward, a Commissioner of the Erie County Board of Elections, and attorney Jim Vallone, a former Cheektowaga justice. Evans officials included town Board member Paul Cooper and Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino. Leaving the Eden Corn Fest for a visit to the picnic was Eden Democratic Chair Molly McLaughlin. “We’re pleased to have so many elected officials and candidates at our picnic,” noted town Chair Catalino. “Although we’re a small town, Evans enjoys a good turnout on Election Day. The fact that they came out to meet with Evans voters shows how important this town is to their election.” The winner of the 50/50 split club at this year’s picnic was Russ Manguso, the Chief of the Parks Department and a basket of cheer went to Kelly Tanyi. The next Club meeting is Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 7:30 p.m., at the VFW on Route 5, near Lake Street. ________

RAZZ AND FRIENDS CHAUTAUQUA JAZZ AT GAZEBO

A group new to the gazebo, Razz And Friends, will be at Angola’s Centennial Park from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, August 15th. The group was suggested by several Angola concert regulars. The evening is sponsored by the Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. Razz And Friends is a quintet based group with Barbara Jean, an exceptionally fine vocalist; Razz (Ralph Rasmusson) playing alto and tenor saxophones, clarinet, flute and harmonica; and the rhythm section of Frank Farina on piano, Bill Winchester on drums, and Lloyd Howard on bass. The band originally formed in 1992, with Bill Winchester joining in 1996 and Barbara Jean joining in 2001 as an occasional volcaist and becoming their full time vocalist in 2002. Their repertoire consists mostly of songs from Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and other fine composers, as well as featuring original songs by Barbara Jean in the American standards tradition. Handicapped parking is off High and Center Streets if you arrive early. The Brant-Evans Girl Scouts sell refreshments at the park. The ice cream man has been making a stop at the park each week. The rain location for all of the summer 2012 concerts will be the New Angola Theater on North Main Street. Next week, on Wednesday, August 22, The Krew Band sponsored by Evans Bank and Evans Agency will present the second last concert of the season. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the concert. ________

The Community Action Organization of Erie County and the Samaritan Counseling Center have collaborated with the Evans Parent to Parent Group to let parents discuss issues facing teens and young adults in our community. The group’s main goals are to educate parents of the warning signs of substance abuse or self destructive behaviors, share resources and treatment options, and build community involvement. Recently Parent to Parent invited the TLC Health Network Chemical Dependency Program to speak to the group. Michael Waring and Kimberly Covino were able to discuss warning signs with parents and treatment options available. Officer LaRosa from the Town of Evans Police department also spoke to the group about what the community can do to make a difference. He stated, “If you see something, say something.” The Town of Evans Police department tip line is 217-3585. “We are so glad to be able to take a proactive stance in our community, some of these kids really need help.” said one member. Another parent added, “It’s nice to get answers from someone who knows what they are talking about, now we have options.” The Parent to Parent group meets every Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Action Organization located at 251 N. Main St., in Angola. This is an open group and any parent or concerned citizen is urged to attend. ________

TEENS SEEK MORE COUNSELING

The Mental Health Clinic at Community Concern saw a 184% jump in teens seeking behavioral healthcare. Jerry Bartone, executive director, reports that 92 adolescents age 14-18, and their families, have requested counseling and psychiatric care this year. “There are so many factors affecting teens,” says Bartone. “With the struggling economy making it difficult for families these days, many teens feel alone and often have a difficult time resisting negative peer pressure and avoiding dangerous situations. At the same time, the abuse of prescription pain medications has been growing among teens at an alarming rate. With only a third of teens saying they feel they have adequate family support, readily available teen oriented counseling services are more critical than ever.” There is good news. “More adolescents are seeking professional help, and they are involving their parents,” reported Bartone. “The biggest barrier to accessing mental health services has always been the cost. Thanks to funds from grants provided by Evans Bank Foundation and New Era Cap, Community Concern of WNY has been able to make available group and individual counseling in the high school. “They say that the opportunity to be in counseling allows them to say what they feel without fear of punishment or judgement. Teens more readily use advice from someone other than their teachers or parents. They tell me counseling allows them to concentrate better on academics.” said Burt. For additional information, call Community Concern of Western New York at 947-5025 or visit their office at 6722 Erie Road (Rt. 5), Derby, NY 14047. Community Concern is a non-profit agency that depends upon financial donations and volunteer efforts to provide these critical services. TABS THAT GIVE BACK

The 2011-2012 school was a success year for the students, faculty, and staff of J.T. Waugh. Students worked hard to be successful in and out of the classroom as our ultimate goal is to develop productive, contributing citizens. Students and their families contributed to their school and community through monthly “Community Project”. The ideas for the projects either went along with a curriculum theme (Red Ribbon Week) (100 Pairs of Socks for the City Mission to match 100 Days of School-February), Nationally recognized movements (Pink Ribbons-October), or others that were thought up by teachers or students (sponsoring a puppy to be raised here in Angola for the blind- June) (Collecting tabs for the Ronald McDonald House-May). Whatever the cause the students, staff, families, and in many projects-friends and neighbors worked together to make the project a success. Joining together strengthens us as a school and a community. Pictured is Haley Murray as she delivers the 20+ lbs. of tabs that J.T. Waugh collected for the Ronald McDonald House. It was Haley’s idea to collect the tabs as our Community Project for May, so that the money raised from the pop tabs could be used to help the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House while their child was being treated at Children’s Hospital. ________

FOURTH GRADERS ADD BEAUTY TO THE OFFICE Students artists were called on to add beauty and a touch a childlike flare to the J.T. Waugh Main Office and they didn’t disappoint. Mrs. Smadino, Art teacher, had fourth grade students develop an idea for a 3’x 8’ mural to be the select piece on display that would be the centerpiece to greet one and all who enter the school’s Main Office. The colorful mural includes a sunflower that surrounds the Earth wrapped with children, sea turtles, and other wonderful eye catching sights. Mr. Glen Smith, Head Custodian, furnished a handmade frame that will allow the piece to be changed in the future with other artwork. The vibrant piece done with love and creativity warms the whole office and share to those entering a great first impression of what our students at J.T.Waugh are capable of. ________

Weidner’s BBQ! At Bert Weidner’s, cooking chicken barbecue-style is a way of life. Our family has been barbecuing chicken at local events for more than 45 years. We grill our chicken over an open flame and baste it with our own special-recipe barbecue sauce until it is cooked to perfection--golden brown, juicy, tender, crispy on the outside, and always delicious. In the summer, you’ll find us grilling away at the America’s Fair (formerly the Erie County Fair) and the Chautauqua County Fair. But remember, we can bring our tasty chicken and all the fixin’s right to your fundraiser, corporate event, or private party. Prices are less than you might think, and we will deliver your order free of charge within approximately 5 miles of our Eden, NY kitchens. Please see our delivery zones map for details. “I ordered Weidner’s Chicken for a couple different picnics last summer and everyone raved about how good it was! It really was a hit and I appreciated the reasonable price and the friendly home delivery! I would recommend Weidner’s Chicken to anyone looking for a great barbequed chicken.” Diane P.

“My family and extended family cannot say enough great things about Weidner chicken. We thankfully stumbled upon them many years ago when planning a family gathering for which there was no time to cook, and have been ordering from them ever since. The convenience of having delicious, hot, and ready-to-serve chicken delivered when you need it, takes all of the hassle out of family gatherings, giving you more time to visit. Their chicken is so scrumptious, that we often order extra and freeze it for those days you don’t feel like cooking. The Weidner family customer service is excellent and all of our guests rave about their food – Bon Appetit!” Lisa W.

f you like the heat and sunshine that this summer has offered, like most of us, you probably don’t want it to end. However, before you know it, it will be back to school for area high school and college students. If you’ve made a recent visit to your local supermarket or department store, you have no doubt noticed the entrances of those stores filled with school supplies and accessories. For families with children, back-toschool time brings big changes in lifestyles as well as shopping patterns. We, at the new Angola Pennysaver, will try to ease you back into the school year and offer you an abundance of goods and services that you will need to get you into the back to school season. This special section is appropriately entitled ‘Back To School.’ It will offer a variety of businesses that focus on the new school year. What would a new school year be without new clothes and accessories. We will help fashion prep your child or young adult. Lets face it, teens are very clothes conscious so we will suggest advertisers that appeal to that sense. In addition, kids of every age will want a fresh hair style for the new school year. Our many area salons will want to cater to their needs. This guide also features all that you need to get your child ready, from doctor and dental visits to sports check-ups and eye exams. We’ll get you in touch with car dealers as well as car care centers. Are you in need of a pre-school, day care center or an after-school dance studio or perhaps a gym membership, for either yourself or your children ? We’ve got you covered there too. For the college bound students, we will show you how to stock up on college wardrobes for less. Enjoy the remaining “dog days” of summer and let us help you make the transition ‘Back to School’.

Stock up on college wardrobe essentials for less Prior to starting school, many students spend a portion of the summer scouting aisles of clothes at area stores to expand their wardrobes. Students entering or already enrolled in college may want to make subtle changes in the clothes they select. College students hoping to make a good impression may want to pay attention to the clothes they choose to wear to school, job interviews, formal functions and networking opportunities. Remember, you can network with everyone from fellow students to professors and other staff. This is why it can pay to concentrate on always looking dapper and well kept when attending classes or being on campus. College students who already are facing high tuition bills and costs for textbooks and supplies may feel they do not have the funds for a respectable wardrobe. However, it is possible to get professional-looking clothes on a budget. * Start with the basics. Begin with the basics when assessing your wardrobe. Certain essentials can be used in many different ways. For example, suit starters, consisting of suit jacket, slacks (and skirts for women) and button-down shirts, can be mixed and matched. The slacks can be worn with just about any top, and the same goes for skirts. Pair a jacket with khakis or jeans for a less formal look that is still professional. The button-down shirt can dress up jeans and look crisp but not overly done-up. * Select a muted color palette. That great floral blouse may look tempting, but something that has a large pattern or is easily recognizable cannot be worn as frequently as something less noticeable. College students have minimal storage space and minimal funds for drawers full of clothes. It pays to find pieces that can be reused over and over. Basic colors, especially solid

AUGUST 12, 2012 / PAGE 23

colors, are more versatile than more colorful items. * Have at least one good suit. A well-fitting suit is an asset to a student going out on interviews or participating in internships. Be sure to have one or more suits or formal pairings that will serve well when you need to put your best foot forward. Have the clothing dry cleaned frequently enough so it is always readypressed and sharp looking. * Stock up on dark-wash jeans. Dark-colored jeans in a trouser cut look more professional than those that have been acid stained and purposely cut or full of holes or are too form-fitting. When going out, it is alright to wear trendier items, but in the classroom or when representing yourself and the school, you may want to wear more understated attire. A few basic shirts, sweaters and cardigans can be mixed and matched to look professional. * Shop sales or at discount stores. Just because you need to look polished doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. Many discount stores, consignment shops and big-name retailers have classic styles in off-brands that are not as expensive. Shop at the end of the season when stores are clearing out old merchandise for the next round of clothing. Since classic pieces never go out of style, spend the end of the season shopping for lightweight clothes that can be worn next year instead of paying full price for autumn wardrobes right now. * Choose clothes that can be cleaned in a washing machine. Check the care labels inside of clothes before purchase. Having too many pieces that need to be dry-cleaned can eat away at your budget. Select fabrics that are more durable and can be washed easily. * Ask for clothing as gifts. As a child, you may have cringed when you received clothes as a gift. But now that you’re older, clothing as a gift can be an asset. If you don’t trust the shopping skills of gift-givers, say that gift cards to specific retailers would be much appreciated. * Don’t be shy about hand-me-downs. Certain family members or friends you know may have gently worn pieces of professional clothing that they can share. Rather than have these people put items in the donation bin, ask if you can look through the clothing to see if any items will enhance your wardrobe. Do not be embarrassed about asking for quality pieces on social media, either. Browse online auction and retail sites, such as Ebay or Etsy, for low-cost clothing. While you may not have to retrofit every piece of clothing to create an adequate college wardrobe, it pays to add pieces that will showcase your professionalism -- especially to those people who still may judge a book by its cover.

Teaching kids to be green The children of today are the decision-makers of the future. Therefore, it’s imperative that youngsters learn about the planet and how to protect it. Teaching children about the ways they can protect the planet or make simple changes to decrease their carbon footprints now may pave the way for more informed adults later, and children can discover the benefits of giving back rather than taking more. * Bike, walk or carpool. Kids are in transit just as much as their adult counterparts, and how they get from point A to point B can help or hurt the environment. From home to school, from school to an extracurricular activity, from an extracurricular activity back to home, transportation is a large part of the day. Automobiles

consume large amounts of fossil fuels and also release harmful contaminants into the air via their exhaust systems. Walking or biking to school gives children the opportunity to enjoy fresh air and exercise while reducing their reliance on fuels. If school is too far away, involve kids in the set-up of a carpool with friends and discuss the benefits of riding together. * Take a trip. Children are visual creatures and often learn the best lessons by seeing what something is all about. A day trip to a working farm or a recycling center can teach important lessons about sustainability and conservation. * Shop secondhand. Children and toys go hand-in-hand. However, what was once the latest and greatest toy can quickly become overshadowed by something new tomorrow. Explain the benefits of getting gently used toys, clothing and books instead of purchasing them new. Doing so reduces the reliance on the production of new things, cuts down on shipping and also saves money. Encourage kids to set up a toy swap where they pass on toys they no longer find interesting to others who can enjoy them. * Lead by example. When installing new LED bulbs or switching out an appliance for an Energy Star-rated model, explain to children why this is being done. Children learn quickly and can grasp abstract ideas more easily than adults may think. They soon may catch on and make their own green changes, such as turning off lights when not in rooms, unplugging game chargers when not in use or using less water while brushing teeth before bed. * Cook together. Instead of purchasing fast food and processed, packaged foods or traveling to a restaurant, make a meal at home that everyone can enjoy. Not only will this enable the family to talk about important local and global issues, it saves energy and reduces the family’s carbon footprint as well.

“because neural response to music is a widely distributed system within the brain, it would not be unreasonable to expect that some processing networks for music and language behaviors, namely reading, located in both hemispheres of the brain would overlap.” Music education is not just for the average student. Other research shows it may be beneficial to children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. A study completed at Stanford University showed that mastering a musical instrument improves the ability to process parts of the spoken language. The researchers believe that additional research might develop a way to use the knowledge obtained in the study to increase language development for individuals with dyslexia or cognitive disorders. In many schools, music education is being drastically reduced or eliminated. Parents may want to look outside the classroom for music instruction or play more music at home.

Back-to-school party ideas Music education can help with school skills Music’s efficacy as a teaching tool has long been studied. Though some still doubt if music has any effect on student performance, a strong body of evidence suggests otherwise. Studies into the effects of music on learning are nothing new. Such studies have been conducted for decades, gaining popularity during the 1950s when research was done on something called the “Mozart Effect.” The Mozart Effect theorizes that listening to Mozart can temporarily improve performance and may even boost a person’s IQ. In response, many parents started playing Mozart and other classical music in their homes. By the late 1990s, Baby Einstein, a company that offers a wide range of developmental and entertainment products for babies and toddlers, released a series of CDs and videos that prominently featured classical music amid visual learning sequences for young children. “Baby Mozart,” “Baby Bach” and “Baby Beethoven” were just a few of the videos capitalizing on the evidence that children learn more when exposed to classical music. Ongoing research continues to support the theory that music education can help children on many levels. In Canada, a research group from McMaster University conducted their own study into music education. That study, which was published in the journal Brain in 2006, examined two groups of children, ages 4 to 6. Each were taught the same lessons, but one group was also given musical instruction. The study found that the group of children who received musical instruction scored much better than their peers in literacy, mathematics, IQ, and memory skills. Long Island University researchers Joseph Piro and Camilo Ortiz found that children exposed to a multi-year program of music instruction, involving training in increasingly complex rhythmic, tonal, and practical skills, displayed superior cognitive performance in reading skills compared to their peers who did not receive musical training. The authors concluded that,

Back-to-school season is on the horizon, and many students and parents are either loving or loathing the idea of starting a new school year. For some, a party to commemorate the new school year and the end of summer is customary. Hosting a fun event for the soon-to-be students is one way to make the most of vacation time. * Go with a theme. Maybe the theme is rulers and text books, ABCs, or science, and it can run through the decorations used, the games played, the food served, and many other aspects of the event. Consider a science experiment inspired volcano cake that is oozing strawberry jam. * Include some educational games. Some students experience educational backsliding during summer vacation. That is why many schools have summer reading lists that educators feel promote lesson reinforcement for the coming school year. With this in mind, plan activities around concepts children learned in school. Think about math problem relay races, art projects, reading a story and reenacting it in a play form, or science experiments using solar energy. * Host a campout reading marathon. Encourage guests to bring sleeping bags and favorite books to a campout under the stars. Most of the time can be spent reading while breaks can be devoted to exercising, making campout snacks or telling campfire stories. * Rent out a fun bus or truck. Since many students will be spending a good deal of time on a school bus once the new school year commences, tie into those jaunts to school by renting the services of a game bus or truck. Some vendors will park their vehicles in front of the house for an hour or more, allowing children to climb inside and enjoy themselves on play equipment or compete in video game competitions inside specialized gaming trucks. * Plan a group event at the beach. Spending time seaside can be educational and enjoyable at the same time. Enlist the help of a few chaperones and set up an area on the beach where kids can play and explore the wonders of nature around them. Pack picnic-type snacks or ask attendees to bring items themselves. * Plan a trip to the school. First-time students may be anxious about what to expect during their first days of school. Having friends who are slightly older accompany younger kids to school to give a tour and show them the ropes make the experience less frightening. Afterward, meet at a pizzeria to enjoy some slices and soda. * Host a classic pool party. Of course, some kids want to commemorate the end of summer vacation by enjoying the pool one last time. Have a classic pool party and barbecue in the yard for everyone to enjoy.

After-care options for dual-income families In a perfect world, school and work hours would run concurrently. But the average school day begins at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m., while the average work day lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. As a result, parents must arrange for child care during those hours when school is out, but Mom and Dad are still at work. The two-income family is more common than ever before. Up until the 20th century, a dual-income family was rare. Today, however, roughly 80 percent of families in North America have both parents working, and many find it is impossible to live on one income. Dual-income families often have to make difficult choices about child care. If a mother returned to work shortly after giving birth, day care was probably arranged early on. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010, 48 percent of children ages 0 to 4 with employed mothers were primarily cared for by a relative. Twentyfour percent spent the majority of their time in a center-based arrangement. As children grow and attend elementary school, traditional day care is usually not an option and parents have to make other arrangements. School-based care Many schools offer programs both before and after school, many of which are reasonably priced. This helps dual-income families, but may not be practical during early-release days, during teacher planning days or holiday breaks. Programs that help parents before school typically allow working parents to drop off their children before the parents head to work. The students are kept in the school’s gym or cafeteria until the regular school day begins. The same scenario applies to after school programs. At dismissal, after-care students will return

ANGOLA PENNYSAVER

to the designated location to work on homework or engage in some activities with other after-care participants until their parents arrive to take them home. Family and friends Parents who prefer a different situation than school-based care frequently turn to friends or family members to bridge the gap between school and work. Students who carpool may be dropped off early at the driver’s home and stay there after school until their parents get home. In addition, many families have welcomed older relatives back into their homes in light of the struggling economy. In such instances, grandparents or aunts and uncles can look after the kids once school has ended for the day. After-school programs Some children are enrolled in care centers that watch children before school, bus them to school and then return in the afternoon to pick up the children again. This is one of the more costly options in child care. However, it may be more educationally structured than the care programs provided at school. Students who participate in sports or academic clubs may have an arrangement to stay with a teacher, coach or club administrator until their parents are home from work. These programs vary depending on the region of the country and the particular school district. Personal finances also play a role in the type of care families can afford. When the decision is made, there are some questions parents should ask before enrollment. * What is the ratio of caregivers to students? * What is the cost of the program? * How are delayed opening days and early dismissal days handled? Holidays and breaks? * What happens if I arrive late? * What activities will take place? * Is there ample time for homework? * Are caregivers teachers or volunteers? * Are background checks conducted? * Is financial assistance available? * What is the turn-over rate of staff? * Is there a nurse available? * Who oversees the program? * Is busing available? * How are emergencies handled? * How is poor behavior handled? * May I visit the program for a check-in? * With whom do I speak, etc.

How to help kids choose an extracurricular activity

Today’s kids are busier than ever before. Commitments in the classroom

Teens make ideal volunteer When it comes to volunteering, perhaps no group of people is better suited to volunteering their time and services than teenagers. Teenagers typically have lots of free time and are liable to gain great perspective on life from helping others. Teenagers applying for or hoping to one day go to college can also benefit from listing volunteer experience on their college applications. While some might suggest that’s not reason enough to volunteer, it is a benefit to teens looking to stand out among a crowded pool of college applicants. But one of the problems many teens face when deciding to volunteer is finding an opportunity that suits them. Fortunately, teenagers have many opportunities to volunteer at their disposal. Special Olympics Teens who love sports can combine that passion for competition with their desire to help others by volunteering with the Special Olympics (www.specialolympics.org). The Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports to adults and children with intellectual disabilities. Volunteering opportunities with the Special Olympics run the gamut of sports, from coaching to keeping score to being there to cheer on the athletes. Habitat for Humanity Teens who enjoy working with their hands might want to consider volunteering with Habitat for Humanity (www.habitat.org). Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. Teens can help build simple and affordable homes for low-income families. Reading Is Fundamental Young readers might embrace Reading Is Fundamental (www.rif.org), which works to motivate children to read by working with them, their parents and their community to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. Many high school and college students volunteer with RIF, and a volunteer might read books aloud to kids or help in any number of areas, including selecting and ordering books and organizing and participating in book events. The Sierra Club Eco-conscious teenagers might find the Sierra Club (www.sierraclub.org) is the right fit for them. The Sierra Club works to create a safe and healthy community in which to live and provide smart energy solutions to combat global warming. Volunteers can participate in a number of activities through their local chapters. These activities range from working with community outreach programs to partaking in Online Action Teams that promote the Sierra Club and its missions through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Additional Opportunities The above opportunities are just a few of the hundreds of options available to teens hoping to volunteer. Local homeless shelters, food banks, religious organizations, animal shelters, and even state parks are some of the places teens can contact to learn about volunteering opportunities in their area.

coupled with a full slate of extracurricular activities have ensured that many of today’s school-aged children don’t have a minute to spare. While it’s important for kids to embrace extracurricular activities, parents know it’s not always easy helping kids find the right activity that allows them to grow outside the classroom while still focusing on their responsibilities inside it. In addition, kids’ interests tend to change at the drop of a hat, so something they want to do today might bore them come tomorrow. To help kids choose and manage their extracurricular activities, consider the following tips. * Emphasize that schoolwork must come first. Kids get excited about extracurricular activities, especially ones involving sports where they get to spend time playing with their friends. But parents should emphasize that school still comes first and that, if schoolwork starts to suffer, participation in extracurricular activities will be put on hold until kids get their studies back on track. * Go over coursework at the start of the school year. Examine a child’s course load before choosing an extracurricular activity. It’s important to do this each year, as coursework gets more difficult as children get older. Just because a child could handle a couple of afterschool activities a week when he or she was in fifth grade does not mean such a schedule will be as manageable when the same child reaches high school. Go over coursework and requirements as early as possible, preferably before the school year starts, so you and your child can get a grip on what can and can’t be handled with regards to extracurricular activities. * Get a grasp of the commitment required of a given activity. Extracurricular activities require various levels of commitment. Varsity sport participation, for example, typically requires daily commitment and often requires kids to participate on weekends or even the sport’s “off-season,” which may include summer vacation. However, volunteering with a local charity likely won’t require such a large commitment and such charities often allow volunteers to choose their own schedules. Parents and their children should consider the level of commitment an extracurricular requires and choose the activity they’re most comfortable with. * Don’t overlook the social benefits of extracurricular activities. When helping kids choose an extracurricular activity, it’s important to leave the ultimate decision in their hands. After all, kids won’t get much of the experience if they’re reluctant to participate. However, parents should not overlook the social benefits of extracurricular activities. Consider those benefits when helping kids choose activities, especially if they’re likely to choose solitary activities like learning a musical instrument. It’s good to encourage such interests, but also try to encourage a balance between solitary activities and ones that encourage socialization with peers, such as a sports team, debate club or volunteering with other students at a local charity. * Don’t forget the fun factor. Extracurricular activities are not just supposed to instill character, they’re also supposed to be fun. If kids aren’t having fun or showing any interest in a given extracurricular activity, then help them find another one. Kids need time to have fun away from school just like adults need time for fun away from the office. Weigh how enjoyable a given activity figures to be for your youngster before signing them up.

How to make healthy school lunches for kids Confrontations focusing on diet between children and parents have been around seemingly since the beginning of time. Many children start off as cooperative eaters, anxious to try different types of foods. As they get older, the number of foods they’re apt to eat diminishes, which can make choosing healthy items for lunches and dinners more difficult. It also can make packing lunches for school more challenging. Many initiatives have attempted to improve the quality of school lunches provided by school cafeterias. Government regulations to reduce the amount of fat and sodium in these lunches, and to introduce more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are one such initiative. Parents of students who prefer to bring their own lunches from home may be left wondering how they can create healthy lunches their kids will eat. Considering school lunches must compete with far less healthy yet widely available alternatives, parents will need to be creative in their creation of homemade lunches. Here are some ideas to get you started. * Purchase a new lunch container. There are many different new and

innovative lunch containers that can make separating school lunches easy. Few kids want to dig into a brown paper sack and pull out something that has been so squashed it’s unrecognizable. Partitioned lunch boxes enable you to pack different items together where they can be stored separately. The divisions also help you remember to include foods from the basic food groups, such as a fruit, vegetable, protein, starch and dairy item. * Have your child make a list of his or her favorite foods. Once the list has been made, see how you can make the foods healthier. For example, if chicken nuggets make the list, prepare your own nuggets with white meat chunks that are baked, not fried. If there are a number of bread items, see if you can substitute whole grain breads instead of white, bleached varieties. * Get creative. Children may not be inclined to eat loose pieces of fruit. But if the fruit is stuck on skewers or served with a low-fat dipping sauce or caramel, it may look more appealing. Look to “mini” foods, which tend to be more fun as well. Little sandwiches and little burgers may present an optical illusion, where kids think they’re eating only a small amount, but actually it’s a full serving. * Hide healthy foods within others. There are entire recipe books that teach you how to mix fruits and vegetables into desserts to increase nutritive value. Everything from spinach to tofu to beets have been included in items like cake, cookies and brownies. So if kids are reticent to dig into their greens, try a clever hiding method. * Cut foods into fun shapes. Kids may be more inclined to eat a turkey and cheese sandwich if it’s cut into star shapes or their favorite cartoon characters. Invest in a few cookie cutters so that lunchtime becomes fun time. * Don’t let the time of day dictate what you serve. As long as kids are eating healthy items, it doesn’t matter when they eat them. If a child loves bagels, choose whole wheat bagels and add an egg on top for a nutritious lunch. Serve with a gelatin dessert that contains chunks of fruit and low-fat milk, and you’re set. There are many different ways to improve homemade lunches for the better.

After 37 years in business, we have decided to make a change and are no longer running our automotive repair shop but will continue to provide AAA Road Service. You will still find all the services we provided available at our same location and same phone number (337-3664) but will now be operated under the name of Frank C’s Truck and Auto Specialties, Inc. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their years of patronage and support. We value each of you as not only our customer, but also as our friend. Without you, our accomplishments would not have been possible and our goal of beginning to enjoy the fruit of our labor could never have been reached. We also thank all of our employees who served us well over the years and all our many vendors. But most importantly we thank the Lord our God, who gave us the wisdom in decision making, strength in difficulties and blessings far beyond what we could have asked for or even imagined. Again, we extend our heartfelt thanks and prayers. Joe and Karen Seggio Joe’s Tire & Automotive Center, Inc.

MEMORABLE EVENTS FROM 1912

The arrival of 2012 should be celebrated just as the preceding years were. A new year often provides a sense of rejuvenation, but it also marks a great time to look back on history. At the dawn of a new year, many people wonder what it was like to be alive 100 years ago. Throughout 2012, history buffs and novice historians alike might be interested to know the following events all took place way back in 1912. January * The Republic of China is established. * British explorer Robert F. Scott reaches the South Pole, only to discover Roald Amundsen arrived there irst. * The International Opium Convention is signed at The Hague. It is the first international drug control treaty. February * China adopts the Gregorian calendar. * Arizona becomes the 48th state of the United States of America. March * Albert Berry makes the first parachute jump from a moving airplane. * The Girl Scouts of USA are founded. April * The RMS Titanic sets sail for New York City. Four days later the passenger liner would strike an iceberg, eventually sinking as a result. * A solar eclipse is seen across Europe. * Boston’s Fenway Park and Detroit’s Tiger Stadium open. The stadiums would become two of baseball’s most historic stadiums. May * The Olympic Games begin in Stockholm, Sweden. * The Beverly Hills Hotel opens. June * New Jersey Governor Thomas Woodrow Wilson earns the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. * The deadliest tornado in Canadian history, known as the Regina Cyclone, devastates the city of Regina, Saskatchewan. July * Jack Johnson retains boxing’s heavyweight title with a 9th round TKO of Jim Flynn. * Emperor Meiji, who presided over Japan as the country became a world power, passes away at the age of 59. August * The Bull Moose Party, which resulted from a split in the Republican Party within American politics, forms and nominates Theodore Roosevelt as its presidential candidate. * Abdelhafid of Morocco abdicates as Sultan of Morocco after a controversial reign. September * The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is founded in New York, New York. * Center fielder Casey Stengel, who would go on to become one of baseball’s most beloved and successful managers, debuts as a player with the Brooklyn Dodgers. * More than 1,000 people die when the Kiche Maru, a Japanese steamship, sinks during a typhoon.
