OBITUARIES

RONALD P. SPENCE Ronald P. Spence came from a long line of jewelers. At over 125 years and running, Spence Jewelers is the oldest existing jewelry company in western New York which started in the 1880’s. Walter M. Spence was the 1st generation who started manufacturing mens’ Masonic rings in Buffalo, NY. The 2nd generation, Walter Spence Jr., carried on the manufacturing until his death in 1954 when Loretta Spence took over. At a time when women were not involved in business, Loretta pursued and continued on with the manufacturing of men’s & ladies fine rings that sold all across the country. The 3rd generation, Ronald Spence, was involved at a very young age when he used to work with the casting, designing, polishing and setting of fine jewelry. In 1977 Walter M. Spence Co. & Jewelry by Spence, Inc. came to the small town of Derby, NY. Jewelry by Spence was born with the help of his mother Loretta Spence and his beloved twin sister Marilyn Geber. Ron’s talent in jewelry repair was exceptional and his insight was impeccable. Ron’s sense of humor and good nature attracted people from all over. Being a small town jeweler was his destiny and what a destiny it was. Michael M. Spence (Ronald’s son) 4th generation joined the jewelry store in 2002 where he will continue to live the legacy of Jewelry by Spence with Honesty and Integrity for many more years to come. Ron passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 10, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 34 years Bonnie Spence, Sons Jay (Kris), Michael (April), brothers Wayne & Paul, sisters Marilyn & Joan, three grandchildren and one grand-dog.

COMMUNITY CONCERN WELCOMES PERSONAL CARE AID PROGRAM FOR SENIORS

Community Concern is very excited to be expanding their Senior Care Management Services to now include a Personal Care Aid program. This program was developed to help relieve the stress that seniors and their caregivers face, due to the current lack of home care agencies in this area. Seniors aged 60 and above who are in need of personal care, such as bathing/showering and toileting, will be able to utilize this service. Trained and certified Personal Care Aids will come into your home and help with these needs as well as meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, etc. “The benefit of this service to caregivers is that we do the legwork in researching qualifications, criminal history and monitoring the quality of work”, says Jerry Bartone, executive director. This is a private pay service and is available in the towns of Evans, Brant, Eden, North Collins, Collins and Hamburg. If you are interested in more information or receiving a Personal Care Aid, please contact Jessica Hughey at (716) 927-5025. Community Concern is the leading provider of behavioral health and senior care management services in Southern Erie County and Northern Chautauqua County. For more information, visit www.CommunityConcern.org or call 716-947-5025 or toll free 888-947-3888. ________

THE MUSIC KREW TO BE AT THE GAZEBO

On Wednesday, August 22nd at 7:00 PM, the outstanding area music makers known as the MUSIC KREW will be at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. The evening is sponsored by the Evans Bank and Evans Agency. The Music Krew was originally formed in the late 1960’s as a band made up of Krew brothers. Over the years, it has expanded, added vocals and additional musicians. They play music from the 1940’s through today’s party tunes. The group appeared at the Gazebo several years ago and some have asked, “Why don’t you get the Music Krew back again?” Handicapped parking is available of High and Center Streets for early arrival. The Brant-Evans Girl Scouts sell refreshments at the park. The ice cream man has been making a stop at the park each week. The last concert of the year on Wednesday, August 29th will feature the ever popular Frankfurters German Show Band-park favorites that have closed out the annual concert series for several years. They are being sponsored by the New Era Cap Company that has provided a large assortment of caps that are raffled off each week immediately following the 50/50 drawing conducted at the concerts. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the remaining concerts of the season. The rain location will continue to be at the New Angola theater on North Main Street. ________

DERBY FAIR AT COUNTY FAIR

To help celebrate the anniversary of the Derby Fair, the Evans Historical Society’s exhibit at the Erie County Fair focused on the local fair. According to Society’s Vice President, Shirley Pfalzgraf, the them at the county fair this year was “Wild about the Fair”. She mentioned what better way to coordinate with the them then to tell the story of the Derby Fair. As many folks in Evans know the Derby Fair is held annually at the First Church of Evans. For the past 100 years the fair has been held not only to assist the church of financially, but also as a community event. Mrs. Pfalzgraf indicated that since 1912 friends have come from surrounding towns to share fellowship as well as to enjoy the many foods, crafts, and games. This year’s fair will be held on Saturday, September, 8, at the little white church at Jerusalem Corners. The Historical Society exhibit was designed and coordinated by Sally Needham and Mrs. Pfalzgraf. It included a lady and her children dressed in clothing of 1912, a wagon of fruits and vegetables that were “brought to the fair” and a placard telling the history of the fair. Painted on the scenery in the background was a picture of the First Church of Evans. Many Enlarged photos of the earliest years of the event were displayed on the walls. Pictured above is a photo of the exhibit which was awarded an ‘Honorable Mention’ by the fair judges. ________

Save Aisha

A Benefit in Support of Aisha Rivera

When: Saturday, September 1, 2012 Time: 6 p.m. Place: Eden 39er’s Social Club, 1915 Sturgeon Pt. Rd., Derby, NY 14047

Aisha’s Story ...

Aisha underwent her first heart transplant at the age of 10 in the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center after experiencing cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle. Her most recent bout with heart troubles began about three months ago, after she told family she was experiencing fatigue and shortness of breath. Aisha is now only 20 years old and is in need of a second heart transplant. This past June, Aisha was transported by Mercy Flight to Buffalo General Hospital to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Once she arrived at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rivera went into cardiac arrest for three minutes before doctors were able to stabilize her. She later underwent an unconventional surgery intended to sustain her until a suitable heart donor is found. What doctors did was implant two Jarvik 2000 artificial heart pumps to give her failing, 10-year-old transplanted heart a lift. The doctors used the patented artificial heart pump in a way that it had never been used before. In advance of the second heart transplant surgery that they are hoping she will receive, some friends and relatives of Aisha are seeking to raise money to help pay for her high medical costs. Aisha is a strong and brave person - a person who would be willing to help anyone if she could. Please - help Aisha to be one of the 3% to receive a second heart transplant. Every penny counts!

DJ Falco will be supplying the Music! Free Pizza and Wings • Chinese Auction • 50/50 Beer Pong Tourney: $20 per team, winning team prizes TBA To help out, become a sponsor or donate anything at all, contact: Dennis Brown: (716) 507-2402 • Lori Brown: (716) 949-1446 • Joe Mogavero: (716) 430-8130

QUILT RAFFLE WINNER ANNOUNCED

For the past few months the Evans Historical Society conducted a Quilt Raffle to help defray the expenses of the Society as well as helping with the costs associated with the Pioneer Cemetery. The quilt was created and donated by Historical Society Secretary, Mary Jayne Ginnitti. At the July meeting of the group, the winning ticket was drawn and the winner was Supervisor Keith Dash. Over $600 was raised to help with the goals of the Society-mostly to preserve the history of Evans. Mr. Joseph Pisarski, President of the Historical Society, thanked everyone who purchased tickets for the quilts. He also mentioned that contributions are always welcomed-especially with the continuing efforts to improve the cemetery. Additional funds are needed to obtain a plaque that was recently ordered commemorating the cemetery’s designation as a “National Registered Historical Sit.” Anyone wishing to contribute to the cemetery fund can send a donation to the: Evans Historical Society, Evans Town Hall, 8787 Erie Rd., Angola, NY 14006. ________
