LAKE EFFECT HARMONY CHORUS HOSTS A NEW MEMBER EVENT Lake Effect Harmony Chorus, whose members represent some 17 communities throughout Western New York, will be hosting a New Member Event on Tuesday evening September 18th, 2012. All women 18 years and over who like to sing are invited to attend. It will be a wonderful evening of excitement and fun as guests will be treated to a first hand performance by the chorus, as well as the opportunity to participate in a chorus rehearsal. They will observe the pride, joy and personal sense of accomplishment that can be experienced when voices combine in four-part harmony to create that distinctive and wonderful acapella sound that has become so popular today. New members will be entitled to five free vocal classes as well. Beginning at 7 pm, the Chorus will be greeting their guests in the rehearsal hall of Faith United Church, 8651 Boston State Rd. Lake Effect Harmony Chorus has been entertaining at community and civic events throughout the area for many years. They have received numerous awards for outstanding vocal performances at the Regional level, and this year were the First Place Gold Medalist Competition winners in their division of small choruses throughout Western New York and Canada. County Democratic Chair candidates Jeremy Zellner and Jim Eagan appeared before the August meeting of the Evans Democratic Club. Zellner is a Chief of Staff for the County Legislative majority. He is a former Executive Director at the County Democratic offices who started out as a campaign volunteer. “I can hit the ground on day one,” he noted. “Kathy Hochul is going to need that kind of support going into November. I’ve worked at headquarters and now I’m ready to go in and manage headquarters.” He talked about his dealings with various local and statewide elected officials and how he would rely upon those relationships as County Chair. Eagan is a partner at Midwood Financial Services and a commissioner at the NFTA. He noted that small towns like Evans are very important to the Chair’s race. He is a past financial chair for candidates. He would like to see the County party offer more financial support for candidates including developing a campaign finance plan. He will decline any financial stipend for the Chair’s duties. His goal is to return the Erie County Democratic party to its former prominence in the state of New York. “People need to know why they’re Democrats,” he said. “And we need to empower the committee members to have a say in local races.” The race for County Chair will be held in the month of September, following the primary. Fifty-nine percent of the weighted vote is outside of Buffalo; forty-one percent is in Buffalo. Family Court judicial candidate Paul Crapsi appeared to thank the club for the support of his candidacy. Crapsi is an administrative law judge who will be running in 2013 for a Family Court seat.. Town Chair Robert “Bob-cat” Catalino updated on the success of the summer activities. There was a little monsoon at the outset of the annual picnic but it didn’t dampen the spirits and good time. He reminded that the primary is on the 13th of September. Club treasurer Dawn Casali scored a 100 on the election inspection exam. EVANS GARDEN CLUB THE GREEN PATH

LEGISLATOR MILLS, LIBRARY DIRECTORS DEEM FIRST HOT DO FUNDRAISERS A SUCCESS Erie County Legislator John J. Mills brought his hot dog roast fundraisers to the Angola and North Collins Libraries for the first time this year, raising money to support the branches’ continued efforts to provide quality programming to their patrons. “Through last year’s redistricting process I was fortunate enough to expand my district into many great towns and villages, including Angola/Evans and North Collins. In their first hot dog roast fundraisers, the libraries in those communities had outstanding backing from the directors, local officials, library board members, volunteers and supporters, which made the fundraisers successful. I am pleased to present these donations and look forward to hosting bigger and better fundraisers next summer,” said Legislator Mills. He presented a donation for $916, a record for a firstyear fundraiser, to Angola Library Director Mary Truby, along with Village of Angola Trustee and Library Liaison Carole Kin; Library Board President Jack Kuebler; and Library Board Members Donna Nagel, Sally Needham and Jackie Haderer, during a presentation held on Aug. 22 at the library. The money was raised during the first annual fundraiser held on July 27. “This event was a great idea, hot dogs and sunshine; the perfect combination for a summer fundraiser! It has come at a perfect time, we can use the money to help fund our new meeting room addition for children’s programs. It was a fun occasion that will assist us in our efforts to provide programs for the children in our area,” said Library Director Truby. Legislator Mills also held his first hot dog roast fundraiser for the North Collins Library this summer on July 30, raising $805 to support programming. The donation was accepted by Library Director Mary Muscarella, who was joined by North Collins Town Board Member Jeffrey Krauss and Town Clerk Maggie Orrange, during a presentation held Aug. 22 at the library. Using a portion of his salary, Legislator Mills hosts the fundraisers and donates 100 percent of the proceeds to the host library. He has now raised approximately $30,000 in six years to support the branches in his district. Top Picture: Erie County Legislator John J. SEPTEMBER GARDENING CHORES September does not have to be the end of summer. Although many plants will be past their best by now - or soon - some care and general maintenance can keep the garden flourishing often into October. These good and easy tips from Garden Organic, the U.K.’s National Charity for Organic Growing, all work just as well for us in W.N.Y. (This is an informative website for beginning and experienced gardeners.) • Water rhododendrons and azaleas during dry spells, especially after this dry summer, to safeguard next year’s flowers. Dry soil as this time of year can lead to a bud drop next spring. • Remove dying and dead flower heads daily. This clears away possible disease and encourages a new round of flowering. • Some of our hanging baskets and containers are looking tired, but if we keep watering and feeding them, they should last at least another month. Rain bounces off leaves, so watering is vital, even if it is raining. Plants’ roots in baskets and containers may have run out of food by now and may need replenishing. • If containers are not raised on bricks or “plant feet,” now is the time to do it so that they will drain freely during possible heavy fall rains. • Get ready for the autumn leaf fall. Consider composting your leaves, which will be talked about in future articles. • Rose leaves affected by blackspot should be removed and put in a waste bin. Remember to pick up leaves on the ground too. All the spores must be cleaned away to reduce infection. • Don’t cut back too hard in the fall “clean up.” Hollow stems and dense vegetation growth make perfect overwintering sites for a huge number of beneficial creatures. Piles of leaves under a hedge will also benefit wildlife looking for shelter. Don’t be too tidy! ... And now we can begin to enjoy those bright, clear, blue sky days of September. Please join us on a Green Path to leave a positive impact on ourselves, our town and our world. Small changes make a big difference. __________

FAMILY BICYCLES FOR AIDS On September 15th, the Barrett family, Bob, Jill and Victoria, will be riding two unique bicycles in the Ride For Life in Ithaca, N.Y. Victoria, a student at S.U.N.Y. Cortland, will be riding her 1887 Rudge High Wheel Bicycle (made in England) on the 50 mile portion of the ride. She has been riding a high wheel bicycle since she’s been 12 years old. It’s her favorite bicycle! She thinks the 50 miles will be both challenging and fun. Bob and Jill will be riding with their daughter on their well-known Barrett Side By Side Bicycle, made by Bob. They have been riding this bicycle since their honeymoon (34 years). The family enjoys riding together and hopes to raise $1,000.00 for the Southern Tier Aids Program which sponsors this event. EVANS GROUP DONATES SWING

Evans Taxpayers United donated a special handicapped swing to the Town, seen here at Evans Town Park playground. The “Jenn Swing” has a capacity of 125 lbs., seatbelts included. ETU Chairman Ernie Waddell said, “Nearly 100% of the donations and dues we receive are spent buying ads to inform the public, but sometimes we’ll buy something tangible for the community. You can’t do enough for the kids.” __________

Donald John Jazembak entered into rest on August 8, 2012 at the age of 62. He leaves behind his beloved of 26 years, Linda “Lynn” Kline; his parents John and Mildred (nee Horton) Jazembak; his children Sheri Lynn Jazembak, Randy (Jean Cosenza) Jazembak; his step children AJ (Tammy) Kline, Kara (Bob) Houseknecht; his grandchildren Alexander “Al” Jazembak, Sean Kline and Aaron Kline; his brother David (Sandy) Jazembak; also many, many friends and family. Donnie grew up in Eden and attended Eden schools. He was in the Coast Guard from 1969-1973. He lived and raised his family in Derby. He was a master woodworker by hobby and a general contractor by trade. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, and working in his wood shop. He loved to build things. Donnie was a Nascar enthusiast and proudly represented his son as crew chief of Jazembak Racing Team. He was a true Grampa and loved his grandchildren very much. Donnie will be missed dearly. The family invites all to participate in a remembrance day on Saturday, September 15th at the Eden Legion at 12 noon. An interment and graveside service will start at 10 a.m. at the Eden Cemetery on Church Street. Children are welcome and encouraged to attend. Let’s heal together.

How Do You Celebrate Labor Day

Labor Day started off as the brainchild of working men, women and children who toiled long hours for meager wages. It was designed to shed light on the poor working conditions and lack of appreciation for the long hours workers put in to eke out a living. Through the years, Labor Day has evolved from a celebration of the humble and overworked to a commercial holiday full of sales, barbecues and end-of-summer hijinks. That said, the way people celebrate around the country is varied. Compare your celebration to the ways the holiday is frequently enjoyed by others.

For many people, Labor Day marks the last time to head to the beach for some summer fun. 1. Parades: Many cities and towns pull out the stops for Labor Day parades. This method of fanfare would hold true to the way Labor Day was celebrated in the 1800s, when workers took to the streets of New York City to demand fair hours and fair wages in the first Labor Day parade of 1882. Parades may culminate with community picnics or fairs. 2. Backyard bashes: Just as Memorial Day in May ushers in the unofficial start

?

of summer (the first day of summer doesn’t arrive until mid to late June), Labor Day marks the unofficial end of the season of fun in the sun. Because the new school year is right around the corner — for some the very next day — backyard parties and events with the barbecue fired up are some of the most commonplace festivities you’ll find on Labor Day. 3. A day at the beach: Even though the warm weather may continue well into October, throngs of sunseekers head to the beach on Labor Day to soak up the rays and taste the delights hawked at seaside boardwalks. Who knows if you’ll get back to the beach before the season ends, so grab your funnel cakes and tall cups of fresh lemonade while you can. 4. Political rallies: Many politicians use Labor Day as a chance to kick off their political campaigns by holding rallies. Others canvass neighborhoods chatting with their public and vying for future votes. 5. Fireworks displays: Summer and fireworks seem to go hand in hand. So it should come as no surprise that celebrants look to Labor Day as another chance to fire off some bottle rockets or pass around the sparklers.

Available!

Weidner’s BBQ! At Bert Weidner’s, cooking chicken barbecue-style is a way of life. Our family has been barbecuing chicken at local events for more than 45 years. We grill our chicken over an open flame and baste it with our own special-recipe barbecue sauce until it is cooked to perfection--golden brown, juicy, tender, crispy on the outside, and always delicious. In the summer, you’ll find us grilling away at the America’s Fair (formerly the Erie County Fair) and the Chautauqua County Fair. But remember, we can bring our tasty chicken and all the fixin’s right to your fundraiser, corporate event, or private party. Prices are less than you might think, and we will deliver your order free of charge within approximately 5 miles of our Eden, NY kitchens. Please see our delivery zones map for details. Delivery charges outside of our region are still very reasonable and exceptions can be made for large orders.

“I ordered Weidner’s Chicken for a couple different picnics last summer and everyone raved about how good it was! It really was a hit and I appreciated the reasonable price and the friendly home delivery! I would recommend Weidner’s Chicken to anyone looking for a great barbequed chicken.” Diane P.

“My family and extended family cannot say enough great things about Weidner chicken. We thankfully stumbled upon them many years ago when planning a family gathering for which there was no time to cook, and have been ordering from them ever since. The convenience of having delicious, hot, and ready-to-serve chicken delivered when you need it, takes all of the hassle out of family gatherings, giving you more time to visit. Their chicken is so scrumptious, that we often order extra and freeze it for those days you don’t feel like cooking. The Weidner family customer service is excellent and all of our guests rave about their food – Bon Appetit!” Lisa W.
