Keeping tools like a snow brush or ice scraper in the trunk of a vehicle is one way to ready a car for the winter months ahead

Winterizing vehicles an important step for drivers As fall gradually gives way to winter, vehicle

owners often sigh at the thought of driving in winter weather or spending weekday mornings clearing their vehicles of ice before heading to the office. But manning the wheel through another snowstorm or whittling away another night’s worth of ice from a car’s windshield are not the only rites of passage motorists must endure as cold weather returns. Winterizing a vehicle can improve vehicle performance during a time of year that, in many locales, can be especially harsh on automobiles. Low temperatures make for less than ideal conditions for engines to run, while potholes left behind by snow plows can damage a vehicle’s wheels and may even result in flat tires and a damaged suspension system. In addition, salt used to improve traction on roadways can cause rust. Short of moving to a locale with mild winters, there’s little drivers can do to protect their vehicles from harsh winter weather. But winterizing a vehicle can prevent some of the more common issues drivers may encounter when the temperatures dip below freezing. • Take time out for your tires. Winter weather can limit traction, putting the safety of drivers and their passengers in jeopardy. When possible, avoid driving in the snow, and steer clear of roads where ice and black ice are known to form. While such measures can greatly reduce your risk of being in an accident, you likely can’t avoid driving entirely come the winter. Drivers who want improved traction from their tires throughout the winter can purchase winter tires for their vehicles. Such tires can more effectively handle roads that are covered in snow and ice than all-season tires. Another way to improve traction during the winter months is to constantly monitor tire pressure, which decreases more rapidly when the weather is cold. Properly inflated tires provide better traction and protect against damage that may occur when driving over potholes. • Consider a low-viscosity oil in the winter. The owner’s manual of your vehicle may recom-

mend you use a lower viscosity motor oil to counter the dip in temperature that’s synonymous with winter. When the temperatures outside fall, the oil inside your vehicle thickens, and a thicker oil won’t circulate through the engine as well. This can cause engine problems because the engine won’t be adequately lubricated. A low-viscosity oil is naturally thinner, so it may improve lubrication throughout the winter. The vehicle owner’s manual should recommend oils based on climate. If not, talk to your mechanic about changing from the oil you use throughout the year to a low-viscosity alternative during the winter. • Inspect your vehicle before winter arrives. No one wants to be out on the road during the first snowstorm of the year only to discover certain components are not working properly. Belts and hoses, while durable, can be put through strenuous conditions during the winter months, so a close inspection of belts and hoses should be conducted in late fall. In addition, windshield wipers are especially important in winter, when snowfall can drastically impact visibility. You will want your wipers working at full capacity once the winter begins, so replace older wipers (shelf life for standard wipers is typically one year) and use a de-icing windshield washer fluid to maximize visibility. Another component that must be inspected is your car’s battery. Many drivers have experienced a dead battery, which, in warm weather, is more of a nuisance than a health concern. In cold weather, a dead battery can threaten your health if you find yourself stranded in cold weather. Especially low temperatures can compromise a battery’s power by as much as 50 percent, so have your battery inspected in late fall and replace it if need be. • Don’t be caught off guard. Part of winterizing a vehicle is being prepared if the vehicle breaks down. Make sure you have extra washer fluid in your vehicle’s trunk, and don’t forget to include an ice scraper, snow brush or even a snow shovel in the trunk as well. A snow shovel may be necessary if you need to dig your car out if it’s been buried somewhere other than your driveway. Other items to carry in your trunk include a blanket, a change of clothes, an extra hat, an extra pair of gloves, some nonperishable food, and a few bottles of water. Winter can be especially harsh on automobiles. But drivers can take several preventive steps to ensure their vehicle is safe and sound on the roads this winter.

Presented by The Snowmobile Clubs of Chautauqua County So Much Variety For Snowmobilers

IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER Chautauqua County is located in the south-

western corner of New York State between Buffalo and Erie, PA. It is adjacent to Lake Erie which blankets the county with tons of fluffy white lake-effect snow. I-90 and I-86 pass through the county. I-90 is about 7 miles from Mayville, the hub of snowmobiling in the county. I-86 passes some of our best snowmobiling villages. The 62-year average snowfall per DOT in Mayville is 205” with a record high of 296.5”. Surrounding areas many times get an extra 10 to 20 inches annually. The county has over 450 miles of trails. All are well groomed and well signed. Most of the trails are on private lands. The county has a variety of types of trails: old railroad beds, open fields, seasonal roads, State Forest Lands, thru the woods, up hills, down valleys, and past Grandma’s house. The five clubs operate twenty-five (25) Class A groomers. Chautauqua County is where Ohio, western Pennsylvania, western and central New Yorkers come to ride! Over one-half of all club memberships are from outside New York State. The reason this article is a county story, as opposed to being a single club story, is because the five snowmobile clubs act as one. We have a comprehensive county map that sets the standard. It takes input from each club to make it work. The map has over 80 advertisers from all over the county that want your business. The main mission is to provide you with the best snowmobiling experience possible. This only happens when everyone works together and this is what our clubs do best. • Trails Thanks to the Landowners who open their lands to snowmobiling. Snowmobiles, cross country skiers, snowshoers, and even dog sledders share some of the same trails so be advised that we all share and watch out for each other. Our snowmobile trails are solely created and maintained by the 100% all-volunteer work force from the five clubs based in Chautauqua County.

Trail head parking for trucks and trailers is available in over a dozen areas which have direct access to the trail system or, if you are staying at many of the local motels or bed and breakfasts, you can ride from your door! Snowmobile rental and guided tour information is also available. • Groomers Our clubs have made grooming a priority. During the season when conditions permit they run 3 to 5 times a week to insure you the best possible riding conditions. • Activities Snowmobiling in the county is very family friendly. There are rides and events all season long. The All Club Ride-In is regularly attended by 700 to 1,000 snowmobilers, with its “A Taste Of Chautauqua” where local businesses bring their specialty dishes, plus the normal fare of hamburgers, hot dogs, coffee, pop, chips, and pastries, all at no cost to all who come. Ice Castle Weekend has a castle built with ice cut from beautiful Chautauqua Lake, snowmobile rides in the park, giant bonfire, flare ride, and fireworks. Add dinner rides, safari rides, mystery rides, poker runs, memorial ride and bonfire, sled raffles, auctions, etc. With snow skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and other snow related activities there is always something to do. • Chautauqua County Snowmobile Clubs The clubs date back to the late 1960’s. They have a saying “Join Where You Ride – Ride Chautauqua County”. We are proud to have the largest snowmobile club in New York State with almost 2,100 memberships (not members). Over 75% of its memberships come from Ohio, Pennsylvania, or within New York State, but outside the county. Trail conditions, including an interactive map, local lodging/restaurant information, webcams, and other useful visitor information is available at the Snowmobile Clubs Of Chautauqua County website, the individual club websites, and the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau website. Chautauqua County Snowmobile Trail Maps are available at many businesses. If you join one of the clubs, the map automatically comes with the membership. Remember, to ride in New York State you must register in New York State. If you join a club, you get a discount voucher to save on your snowmobile registrations. Story by

Enjoy a safe and cozy winter

As temperatures drop and the annual hiber-

nation routine begins, we start using heating appliances such as the furnace, fireplace, and space heaters for the first time in months. To avoid potential hazards, check every autumn that these are in still in good condition and follow precautions for proper use. CSA Group, a leader in public safety and testing and certification, offers the following safety tips for keeping warm on cold days: Furnace: • Have a qualified heating contractor perform a yearly maintenance check of your furnace and venting system. • Clean or replace your furnace filter frequently during the heating season. * Keep the immediate area free of obstructions to ensure free air flow. • Look for a certification mark such as the CSA star mark on your gas-fired furnace to ensure it has been tested and certified to the applicable standard. • Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids near your gas furnace. • Don’t store combustible materials such as paper, chemicals, paint, rags and cleaning products close to your gas furnace. Gas fireplace: • Check that the glass panel is intact. Do not use your gas fireplace if the glass panel is removed, cracked or broken. Glass panels and frame assemblies should only be replaced by a qualified service person. • Check for the mark of an accredited certification organization, such as the star mark from CSA Group when purchasing a gas fireplace. Space heaters: • Check for wear on the electrical cord. If it’s damaged, replace the entire unit or have the cord replaced by a qualified repair person. • Keep it clean by dusting or vacuuming it regularly. Always turn the unit off first. • Keep the heater clear of furniture, rugs and drapes to allow free air movement and avoid overheating. • Look for certified third-party verification marks like CSA Group’s certification mark. This shows that the heater complies with recognized safety standards.

• Turn the heater down or off before going to sleep and keep it out of pathways and well away from bedding and clothes. Turn it off when leaving the house. • Install a smoke alarm in the room with the space heater. • Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed throughout the home. You can find more safety tips at www.csaholiday.com.

Tips when buying a natural Christmas tree Many people harbor strong opinions with re-

gard to which type of Christmas tree they want to purchase. Some cannot live without a natural, freshly-cut Christmas tree, while others prefer the convenience of artificial trees. Those who insist on a natural tree might want to consider the following tips when buying what’s likely their biggest decorative item of the holiday season. • Ask when the tree was cut down. Precut trees may be cut down weeks before they’re sold. So if you’re buying a precut tree, chances are the tree was cut down much earlier than you think. This doesn’t mean the tree won’t make it through the holiday season, but a tree that was cut several weeks ago should have some of its bottom trunk removed before it’s placed in the stand. This will make it easier for the tree to consume water. This step likely isn’t necessary if the tree was cut down the same day you bring it home. • Have the tree shaken before taking it home. A tree should be shaken in a shaker before you put it in your car and bring it home. A shaker removes any debris or dead needles from the tree, which can save you the trouble of cleaning up all of those dead needles from your living room floor later on. • Have the tree wrapped before taking it home. A tree should also be wrapped in twine before taking it home. The twine should be tight enough to keep the tree’s branches from blowing in the wind when you attach the tree to the top of your vehicle. If possible, keep the tree wrapped in twine as you place it in the stand. This makes the tree easier to control. Weekdays Noon - Dusk Weekends 10 am - Dusk

• Choose the right location. When looking for the right place to set up your natural tree, it’s best to choose a spot that’s cool and free of drafts. The tree should not be placed near heat sources, including appliances, fireplaces or vents, because such heat sources create a safety hazard and can make it difficult for the tree to retain moisture. There should also be ample space between the top of the tree and the ceiling. • Place some covering on the ground beneath the tree. Even a freshly cut natural tree will shed needles over the course of the holiday season. Before placing the stand in the location you’ve chosen, put some type of covering, such as a tree bag, beneath the stand so it’s easier to gather all those needles once the holiday season has ended. • Remember that natural trees are thirsty. Men and women who have never had a natural Christmas tree in the past might be surprised at just how thirsty natural trees get. The stand’s reservoir should have lots of water, which should never dip below the stump. If the water dips below the stump, you might be forced to cut a little more off the bottom of the trunk to ensure the tree will make it through the holiday season. That can be a hassle once the tree has been decorated, so be sure to check the water in the reservoir at least once per day to maintain adequate water levels.

Scallywags Grub & Spirits Scallywags Grub and Spirits is the home of Buffalo’s best Steak and Seafood, with a fine selection of Wings like no other. If you prefer the more traditional, Scallywags has a fine selection of burgers, steaks, beef on weck, salads, and more, all with the friendly, warm service that belies the pirate atmosphere.. What pirate fare would be complete without its grog? Scallywags boasts a fully stocked bar to quench every buccaneer’s thirst.

Scallywags Grub and Spirits is the dream of Deebe Brown and her brother David. The two of them planned this voyage to create the ultimate pirate’s den of seafood and drink for years, opening for business in September 2010. Following the tragic loss of David in 2011, Deebe decided to continue to pursue the dream that she and David had created, and carried on. Adding further improvements to an already renovated restaurant, Deebe has devised the ultimate pirate’s paradise of food and drink. With a nautical theme and a wide variety of food, including the finest seafood selection in Western New York, it is the perfect place for intimate dinners, family nights out or banquets. “Walking in the front doors is like walking into a pirate ship.” Deebe said “Every surface has been changed to fit our theme.”

Sledders, be they children or adults, should always sled feet-first or sitting up prove harmful to children. These drawstrings can easily get tangled and lead to strangulation. Parents should remove all drawstrings from kids’ winter clothing before kids participate in winter sports.

Safety first for winter sportsmen

Ice skating & hockey

Winter is a special time of year for sportsmen.

The great outdoors beckons men and women in the wintertime, when skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sledding are just a few of the many cold weather activities to entice athletes out of their homes. Though winter sports can help fend off cabin fever, those who don’t exercise certain safety precautions might find themselves dealing with another kind of fever. Cold weather can leave men, women and children susceptible to illness or injury if they aren’t careful. The following are a few safety tips for winter sportsmen who want to make the most of the coming winter sports season. Clothing Inadequate clothing is one of the easiest ways a winter sportsmen can fall victim to illness or injury . But the right clothing can go a long way toward ensuring this winter sports season is fun and illness- and injury-free. • Wear protective head gear. Protective headgear can help sportsmen avoid colds and head injuries. When venturing outdoors in the winter, always wear a protective wool ski cap. Most body heat is lost through the head, but wool caps help your body retain warmth on cold days and nights. In addition, sportsmen should always wear protective headgear when skiing, sledding, snowboarding or playing ice hockey. Even the most experienced sportsmen can suffer a head injury when playing a winter sport, but the appropriate headgear can prevent head injuries to veteran and novice athletes alike. • Dress in layers. Dressing in layers is another way to stay warm and prevent illness in the winter months. Kids are especially susceptible to cold weather, so parents should dress them in one more layer than they dress themselves. When wearing scarves, sportsmen should tuck their scarves in so they don’t get tangled with sporting equipment. • Remove drawstrings from kids’ clothing. Drawstrings on winter hats, overcoats and pants can

Winter is a great time to go ice skating or play some hockey. However, ice sports like skating and hockey can be especially dangerous, and it’s wise for adults and children to be as cautious as possible when getting in some ice time. • Beware of thin ice. Ice that forms on moving waters, including rivers and creeks, is never safe enough to skate on. Such waters should always be avoided no matter how thick the ice may appear. When going ice skating or playing hockey outdoors, only do so on waters that are supervised and have been tested and approved for skating. • Skate with the crowd and never skate alone. Skating alone might give you all the room in the world to perform a figure eight, but skating alone leaves you with no backup should the ice break and you fall in or if you injure yourself in a fall. When skating, never skate against the crowd. Skiing and snowboarding

Skiing and snowboarding are immensely popular in the winter, but that popularity should not overshadow how dangerous these activities can be. • Get instruction. Ski resorts typically require guests with no previous skiing or snowboarding experience to get lessons before they can take to the slopes. These lessons are a must for novice skiers and snowboarders and even those athletes with no recent experience on the slopes. • Be especially cautious when entering or exiting the ski lift. Ski lifts pose a significant injury risk, so skiers and snowboarders should always be attentive when entering or exiting the lift. • Don’t allow young children to snowboard. Many of today’s youngsters prefer snowboarding to skiing. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children seven years of age and younger should not snowboard. • Don’t be in a hurry. Skiing or snowboarding too fast increases the chance you will lose control and cause injury to yourself or others. Go at a slower, more relaxed pace and take in all of the beautiful scenery along the way. Sledding

Sledding is a great way to have some fun in the winter snow. But even though sledding is often seen as a carefree activity, it can be risky as well. • Never sled near traffic. Sledding near traffic is a definite no-no, as it risks the lives of sledders and motorists alike. Always make sure you sled in an insulated area far away from roadways. • Sled feet-first or sitting up. Sledding feet-first or sitting up greatly reduces a sledder’s risk of suffering a head or neck injury. Never sled while lying down head first. • Never sled on ice. Sledding on ice can cause injuries and make it difficult to control a sled. When sledding, only do so on packed snow. • Do not allow a sled to be pulled by a vehicle. Being pulled by a vehicle while on a sled might seem like fun, but it’s nearly impossible for oncoming traffic to see a sledder behind a vehicle, and it’s very easy for the sled to fishtail into oncoming traffic.
