The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Jackson Horning and Mya Dalton as January’s Members of the Month (MOTM). Every month, Club Staff deliberate and choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports, games, Daily Challenges, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. Jackson is in third grade at A.J. Schmidt Elementary and his favorite teacher is Mrs. Ware. Physical education is Jackson’s favorite subject, and he enjoys pizza and likes the color black. Jackson’s favorite things to do at and away from the Club are play video games and read Minecraft books. The games room is where you’re likely to find Jackson at the Club, but he is very well-rounded and participates in a variety of the different activities offered here. In addition, when participating in the arts and crafts room, he often helps teach other kids that may be struggling with mastering the activity. Mya was selected for MOTM due to her well-mannered and respectful demeanor, and she tries almost all the fun and exciting activities the Club has to offer. Mya attends Highland Elementary and is in the third grade. Her favorite subject is writing, her favorite food is potatoes, the teacher she enjoys most is Mrs. Easton, and blue is her favorite color. Mya likes coming to the Boys and Girls Club to draw in the art room with Miss Sara and Miss Mickey. Even away from the Club Mya loves to draw with her family and friends. When it comes to reading, her favorite book series is Diary of a Wimpy Kid and she also likes The Long Haul. Also pictured with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the month, Peyton DeLair. Peyton was chosen to be the Student of the Month because he consistently completes his homework and racks up plenty of points in Power Hour (homework club) for doing so. Peyton is in third grade at J.T. Waugh Elementary. Mr. Renzo is Peyton’s favorite teacher, his favorite subject is math, and he likes pizza and the color green. Peyton loves reading the Minecraft Handbook and playing on his Tablet in his free time. When Peyton is at the Club he likes playing in the arts and crafts room working on different creative projects. We are so proud of our student and members of the month, and would like to congratulate them on their achievements! It PAY$ to ADVERTISE!!!
Do You Suffer From Vertigo?
Do you experience a spinning sensation that lasts for a number of seconds when you roll over in bed, get out of bed, when you bend down to put on your shoes, or when you tip your head back to look upward? If so, then you may have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), also known as positional vertigo. Patients who have positional vertigo may benefit by treatment known as the canalith repositioning procedure (CRP). The procedure takes only a few minutes, and studies have shown that it is effective about 80% of the time in completely resolving positional vertigo.
The cost of CRP is only $20 If you would like to schedule a CRP diagnostic/treatment session, call our office at
627-7759
For more information about positional vertigo or other services we offer, please visit our website. All fees are posted on our website.

VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves
VA’s Prestige Plummets How we view the Department of Veterans Affairs depends on which survey we read. Back in 2013, in a poll modeled after the American Customer Satisfaction Index, a majority of veterans approved of their care at the VA. Specifically, veterans rated their care at 84 for inpatient and 82 for outpatient, generally along the lines of civilian hospitals. Recently though, a general population poll done by think-tank organization Pew Research concluded that the VA is the third most unpopular U.S. government agency. While the ratings for most agencies have stayed generally the same over the years, the favorable opinion ratings for the VA plunged 16 per-
cent in one year. What happened between the two? Likely it was all the bad news: the disclosure of schedule rigging at VA medical centers for the purpose of increasing bonuses, with the focal point being Phoenix; the resignation of Eric Shinseki, probably the best secretary the VA has ever had; and allegations that the delays in treatment at Phoenix caused the deaths of 40 veterans. While it could be said that we’re comparing apples and oranges (veterans getting care versus the opinions of the general population), it should be noted that the ACSI veterans survey was not anonymous. Surveyors called veterans at their homes already having their
names, phone numbers and addresses as provided by the VA. The Pew survey was dialed randomly. A more recent survey of employee attitudes at the VA paints the most damaging picture of all. Employees voted the VA as the second-worst place to work out of 19 government agencies. Just one year before, the VA ranked as 13th out of 19. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. Subsequently he started work for Niagara Mohawk as a Meter Reader. In 1966 the United States Army drafted Ed to serve his country attaining the rank of Specialist First Class. ... Because who doesn’t love a great deal? Exploring the connection between the heart and love Hearts and Valentine's Day are forever intertwined. One of the most recognizable symbols of love is the modest heart, and hearts adorn candy boxes and cookies while paper hearts are pinned to doors or windows as a symbol of Valentine's Day. Young valentines may share candy hearts printed with silly sentiments. A symbolic heart bears no resemblance to an anatomical heart, and yet it is used to represent the deepest feelings of affection a person can share. Some may wonder just how the emotions of love became tied up in the shape of a heart, even though it's widely known that the brain, and not the heart, governs affections. In ancient times, people believed that the heart was the center of all human emotions. Since the heart is prominently located in the center of the chest and the middle of the body, it became the cornerstone of human feelings. Love is considered to be one of the most profound and strongest human emotions, therefore it was reasoned that the feeling must emanate from the heart. Surprisingly, the heart has not always been the only organ associated with love. During the Middle Ages, the heart was deemed a useless organ. Followers of the Greek physician Galen theorized that the liver actually was the seat of the soul and love. The first depictions of a symbolic heart date back to the 11th century, when the heart was drawn to resemble a pinecone held upside down with the point facing upward. The scalloped heart that is more familiar today first arose in the early 14th century. Around the same time, the heart was depicted with the point facing downward and the indentation at the base. Naturally, as time passed and more was learned about human anatomy, it became obvious that the brain was the seat of all emotion and thought processes. However, as the brain was something intangible in a living body in ancient times, and the beating heart could be much more readily monitored - with a pulse rate speeding up when a person is excited or aroused - it's easy to see how the link between the heart and love has endured. Although the human heart is not bright red like symbolic hearts, that was the color chosen. Red has long been associated with passion, so it made sense to depict the heart in a bright red hue. Many other theories have been offered regarding the symbolic heart and its representation of love. While there's no definitive correlation between love and hearts, the heart has become an accepted symbol of the emotion and the season of romance.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Carpel Tunnel Syndrome Keeps Getting Worse DEAR DR. ROACH: I had surgery on my right wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome eight months ago. The numbness in my fingers has not changed. Now I’m faced with the same problem in my left hand. I’m going to forget surgery, seeing as it wasn’t successful in my right hand. I decided to go to an acupuncturist for laser treatments. I also had a cortisone shot. Neither of these has helped. Do you know of a solution for my problem? -- P.M. ANSWER: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression on the median nerve, as it runs down the arm through a “tunnel” of bone and connective tissue deep in the wrist. It may cause pain, numbness and weakness of the wrist and hand. The thumb and middle three fingers are most often affected. In advanced cases, the hand muscles may become atrophied. The sooner the pressure on the nerve is relieved, the more likely there will not be permanent nerve damage. It sounds to me like the first surgery was not done soon enough to prevent damage. If that’s the case, then surgery on your left hand, done sooner after the onset of symptoms, might prevent the long-term numbness present in your right hand. However, it’s possible that the diagnosis was wrong or that the surgery might not have been effective, even if done promptly. At least one study of needle acupuncture showed that it is as effective as a cortisone injection. This study excluded people who already had fixed numbness in the fingers, who

are less likely to be helped by any treatment. I have not found any evidence that laser treatment is effective. My advice is to first be sure of the diagnosis. An EMG test is a study of nerve function, which can confirm the diagnosis and may be able to predict how much damage there is and provide guidance on treatment. If damage is not too severe, other treatments -such as splinting, medication, yoga or ultrasound -- may be helpful. If advanced, surgery done quickly still may be your best bet. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: There has been much reporting of the effect of not getting enough sun during the winter months. In your professional opinion, can some people get depressed from too much summer? When I lived in the Southwest, all that heat and sun from May to October seemed to really get to me. I wished
often for a cloudy day. Is it because I was raised in the depressing North? -- J.R.W. ANSWER: Seasonal affective disorder is a type of major depression with recurrent seasonal onset and remission. Although it usually is described as beginning in late fall and early winter, and going away in spring or summer, some people can have symptoms that begin in spring and go away in fall. People with spring-onset SAD more frequently have insomnia, poor appetite and weight loss. Light therapy is used only for fall-onset SAD. Both medication and psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy, are used for spring-onset SAD. I don’t know whether being brought up in the North predisposes one to the spring-onset form of SAD. I don’t find the North particularly depressing.
