Flags Along Main Street

Filling Buckets at GLP

Mrs. Orcutt, the school counselor, recently read, "Bucket Filling from A to Z: The Key to Being Happy," to each class at the GLP. The story uses the letters of the alphabet to help children see the many, simple ways that they can fill buckets and fill their own buckets in return. The children then wrote one way they could fill a friend's bucket with kindness on a hand print. The hand prints were displayed on class trees in the GLP cafeteria. The flags along Main Street and East Eden Rd. need to be replaced. Volunteers of Post 880 for the past 10 years have installed and taken down these flags. Financially, we maintain the flags, poles, brackets by replacing ones deemed unserviceable. They have reached their present state of Tribute, Memory and Love. They are faded, worn and tattered. 150 flags, poles and brackets need to be replaced. We are asking the businesses of Eden and East Eden, community organizations and residents to donate to this major project. The estimated cost for replacements is $50 per flag, pole (6 ft.) and bracket. To do a complete replacement, we would need 150 good quality sets. The cost would be $7500. A community effort to this project is neeeded in not only the purchasing of the sets, but installation of brackets. Donations can be sent to Eden American Legion Post 880, 2912 Legion Dr., Eden, NY 14057 Please mark flag donation. It would be nice to have this project completed before Memorial Day 2015. There are 2 new sets located at Main Street and Legion Drive.

Southtowns Catholic School Rocks!

Students in Miss Cassi Johnson's Grade 3 class had a mystery to solve with rocks. The Rock Files project had students use their best detective skills to catch Southtowns Catholic's Most Wanted Rocks! Magma "The Muscle" Metamorphic, "Ignatious" Igenous, and "Sandy" Sedimentary were the top three suspects that the SCS 3rd graders researched along with creating a story detailing their crime and arrest. Likely it was all the bad news: the disclosure of schedule rigging at VA medical centers for the purpose of increasing bonuses, with the focal point being Phoenix; the resignation of Eric Shinseki, probably the best secretary the VA has ever had; and allegations that the delays in treatment at Phoenix caused the deaths of 40 veterans. While it could be said that we’re comparing apples and oranges (veterans getting care versus the opinions of the general population), it should be noted that the ACSI veterans survey was not anonymous. How we view the Department of Veterans Affairs depends on which survey we read. Back in 2013, in a poll modeled after the American Customer Satisfaction Index, a majority of veterans approved of their care at the VA. Specifically, veterans rated their care at 84 for inpatient and 82 for outpatient, generally along the lines of civilian hospitals. Recently though, a general population poll done by think-tank organization Pew Research concluded that the VA is the third most unpopular U.S. government agency. While the ratings for most agencies have stayed generally the same over the years, the favorable opinion ratings for the VA plunged 16 per-

Kazoo Factory: 99 Years and Still Humming

You probably didn't know Jan. 28 was National Kazoo Day. Not to worry if you missed out on the festivities, for there is a place where they celebrate the humble, hummable instrument every day. The Original American Kazoo Company in Eden was established in 1916 and is currently the only metal kazoo factory in North America. They're still making them the old-fashioned way, with machines dating back to 1907. Over 20 machines are run with one 10-horsepower motor connected with overhead jack shafts and leather belts. Did you know the kazoo was invented by an African American named Alabama Vest? And made to his specifications by a German clock master named Thaddeus Von Clegg in Macon, Ga., back in the 1840s? The kazoo arrived in western New York in 1912 and the factory has had visitors from as far away as China and India. Annual Bluebird Nesting Box Workshop Revisited

After a cancelation from November, because of severe weather, the Eden Conservation Board and Mike and Mary Jane Bolo held the annual bluebird nesting box workshop earlier this month at the Eden Town Hall. Ten Participants, with Mike’s guidance, each built two or more nesting boxes. They pledged to put them up by March 15th which is when some bluebirds (call them early birds) may start looking for their summer home. Lamont Beers and Wayne Schachar, both from the Conservation Board, also participated. We are all keen to establish several bluebird trails in and around Eden. Suggestions for relatively open locations are ever so welcome. Finally, but importantly, we owe profound thanks to Ken Foltyniak, a fellow member of the Eden Conservation Board. First off, he donated the wood, AND he cut out the parts, six parts each, for roughly 40 nesting boxes. That’s a lot of work! Some years ago bluebirds were threatened with extinction across the USA. The main reason NYS still and increasingly has bluebirds is because of people like you putting up nesting boxes and monitoring them. Purina Beneful Lawsuit

As you probably have heard or read by now, there is a class action suit against Purina regarding Purina Beneful. Let’s be clear: at this time there are no recalls regarding Purina Beneful in specific. In 2007, Purina Beneful dog food was identified for dog fatalities after an autopsy revealed aflatoxins in the food, and the ASPCA became involved. Aflatoxins are known to be found in moldy grains. At that time, there was a large recall. Fast forward to February 2015; reports resurged claiming that Beneful was killing dogs across the United States after a class action lawsuit was filed against Purina regarding Beneful dog food. The Beneful toxic dog food class action lawsuit is charging Nestle Purina with breach of implied warranty, breach of express warranty, negligence, negligent misrepresentation, strict products liability, violating California’s consumer legal remedies act, violating California’s Unfair Competition Law, and violating California’s False Advertising Law. At this time, it is the court’s job to rule on the charges stated above. The AVMA, along with Board Certified Nutritionists have issued statements regarding the law suit. Many of these statements have supported the fact that no viable proof has been presented to support the claims made by those involved in the law suit. I never recommend Beneful when discussing nutrition for my patients. I always recommend that, instead of relying on advertising, consider instead a diet that contains the following statement: “Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that (product name) provides complete and balanced nutrition for _________.” (blank is to be completed by using the stage or stages of the pet’s life tested such as gestation, lactation, growth, maintenance ) Please avoid any diets that contain the following statement(s): “(Name of product) is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog (or Cat) Food Nutrient Profiles for ________.” (Blank is to be completed by using the stage or stages of the pet’s life such as gestation, lactation, growth, maintenance, or the words “All Life Stages”), or any foods that are for ALL Life Stages. What seems like minor change in wording makes a huge difference in balanced nutrition for your pet. While a large number of people are recommending a dentist’s blog to select the appropriate diet, my recommendation is to visit the following website - http://www.wsava.org/nutrition-toolkit., and look for the Tools for Pet Owner, specifically, “The Savvy Dog (Cat) Owner’s Guide to Nutrition on the Internet”, where you will find that the PDF articles containing a large selection of links to Veterinary Nutritionists that talk in detail about pet nutrition.
