SS. Peter & Paul School Librarian Anne Maggio was recently awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from Immaculata Academy. Maggio is a 1985 graduate of Immaculata Academy and a 1981 graduate of SS. Peter & Paul in Hamburg. Outside of her career, Maggio has volunteered her time in her community. She serves on the Board of Directors for the North Collins Public Library. A.J. Schmidt Elementary Boys’ Basketball Club Returns For Another Spring

A.J. Schmidt Elementary is pleased to announce that the A.J. Schmidt Boys’ Basketball Club has returned for the Spring. The basketball club is instructed by Mr. Matthew Adams and is open to all fifth-grade boys at A.J. Schmidt. The morning practice sessions include running, conditioning, passing and dribbling drills, instruction and scrimmaging. After burning some calories, the boys end their practice with a sports drink and a healthy snack. The club promotes fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship and makes a hometo-school connection through the use of entrance tickets. These tickets allow students admittance to each session and are signed by both parent and homeroom teacher under the condition that the student has shown good character traits. This year, the boys were able to receive AJS basketball t-shirts due to the generous donations from Pat’s Pizzeria and Lake Shore Savings Bank. Additionally, the club has received healthy snacks and sports drinks from the following donors: BODYARMOR Sports Drink, Brothers All Natural Fruit Snacks, Clif Bar & Company, Made Good Chocolate Chip Bars, Vermont Nut Free Chocolates and Wegmans. Lake Shore Central School District Receives Safety Award Recognized for excellence ten years in a row

The Lake Shore Central School District is proud to announce that they have received the Utica National Insurance Group’s “School Safety Excellence Award” for 2016 at the Titanium with Honors level. This marks the 10th straight year Lake Shore has been a recipient of this accolade. The award is presented annually and recognizes school districts’ safety efforts as they work to keep students, staff and visitors safe. Lake Shore officials recently accepted a certificate to commemorate the District’s efforts as well as $500 award for use in furthering those efforts. “The safety of our students, faculty and staff is our first priority here at Lake Shore,” said James Przepasniak, superintendent of the Lake Shore Central School District. “We take the greatest care to ensure that everyone can enjoy the many facilities we offer from educational and athletic programs to activities open to the entire community. It is a pleasure to be recognized for the hard work everyone in the District does on a daily basis to make our schools and grounds safe for all to use.” Utica National’s School Safety Excellence Award Program has three levels – titanium, platinum, and gold – in which schools can earn a meritorious distinction by meeting specific criteria to enhance overall safety. Through the program, schools with their own transportation, schools with contract transportation and BOCES are evaluated. Categories include bullying prevention programs, playground safety, and other areas, and are measured using specific, quantifiable surveys. Lake Shore was one of 145 school districts and BOCES locations in New York State to receive recognition in the program this year. “Safety and health concerns continue to be a priority in our school districts,” commented Brian Saville, resident senior vice president in Utica National’s educational institutions unit.” District’s that go ‘above and beyond’ to provide a safe, healthy and focused culture for learning are to be applauded, and we are pleased to count the Lake Shore Central School District among them.” Beyond this recognition, an added benefit of following the safety program is an opportunity to identify any possible threats to safety issues. “By taking preventative measures, we can react quickly to any immediate concerns should they arise,” added Przepasniak. “From our transportation department, our building and grounds crew to our teachers and administration, this award represents their efforts and dedication to keeping Lake Shore safe.” Contributed by Lake Shore CSD ___________

Southtowns Catholic School Field Trip to Tifft Farms

Students in Kindergarten & Grade 1 went on a Field Trip to Tifft Nature Preserve on April 14th. They had a beautiful sunny day to walk the trails and boardwalks as the guides pointed out trees, plants, bugs, animals and birds. Students studied the characteristics of various habitats including fields, woods, and aquatic areas and learned how animals adapt to their preferred environments. The students were able to pet chicks, goats and two-week old heifers, and see chicks in many stages of hatching. They learned about the life of a farmer and also made farm-related crafts. Lake Shore Middle School Computer Science Club Explores Microsoft on Field Trip

Lake Shore Middle School students participating in CS (Computer Science) Club led by Technology Integrator Mr. Drezek took part in a field trip to the Microsoft Store at the Walden Galleria. This trip was a culminating activity that highlighted various computer science applications through coding. Some say coding is the closest thing we have to a real world “superpower” and students certainly developed and proved their powers over the course of the year. The club has been working during 10th period on a collection of interactive programs using Google CS-First, which uses Scratch, a program developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab. A series of video tutorials help students gain an introduction to coding principles. From here students build, test and revise their programs to success. Students are given the opportunity to go beyond the basics and customize their programs. All students did just this. Adding built-in timers, developing pixel art sprites (characters), creating loops, programming animated effects and designing functional buttons and counters were just a few things they did. The time spent in the computer lab was a great exposure to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) concepts. All students experienced problem solving, critical thinking, dedication, teamwork, overcoming obstacles and creativity during this time. At Microsoft, students participated in a hands-on programming/coding session led by Microsoft staff. The event started with a welcome where students shared the skills developed at Lake Shore CS Club and why they liked it. After a storewide scavenger hunt, they learned how to write code within a program called Touch Develop. Touch Develop is a tool students can use to create mobile applications that they can add to their own devices. Students used Scooter the Turtle to learn about objects, functions, and parameters. They learned the importance of iteration and syntax in coding. The frequent occurrence of mathematics helped them make connections to their math classes. Before finishing students had to test their knowledge by fixing the code to a game that was “broken.” Upon the conclusion of the Microsoft trip, students attended their final CS-Club session, a programming showcase. Students shared a developed program they were most proud of, their struggles and their successes. Students also received an official Google CS-First certificate for their completion of the club. Even after the club had finished, one group of students was planning to team up and reprogram the popular mobile game Geometry Dash. Be on the lookout for future technology developers that started building their ideas and skills at Lake Shore. Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________
