Erie County Legislature Chairman John J. Mills has released the following statement in response to Erie County and the State of New York signing a memorandum of understanding on 219 Bridge. “The MOU signed between Erie County and New York State for the old 219 bridge is great news for the Town of Concord, Village of Springville and all of Erie County. As I stated in April when negotiations appeared to have reached an impasse, we must keep this bridge open to support these communities and businesses. Today’s announcement ensures that the bridge will be repaired, remain open and properly maintained into the future,” said Legislator Mills. ___________

Our continued efforts to bring forth opportunities to save money led to a renewed partnership with Tops Friendly Markets to offer discount vouchers.” Thrifty fans of the Fair will be able to take advantage of savings on gate admission and Strates Shows Midway ride vouchers. Beginning Saturday, June 6 and ending Tuesday, August 11, area Tops Friendly Markets will offer advanced sale gate admission vouchers and weekday one price ride day wristband vouchers. Tops Friendly Markets will be the only retail outlet to offer these discounts in advance of the 2015 Erie County Fair, August 12th -23rd. Tops will offer adult and senior advance sale admission vouchers. Adults will pay $7 and seniors (60+) will pay $5 for admission to the Fair. The vouchers can be redeemed at any gate, any day and at any time of the 2015 Erie County Fair. Regular price admission is $10 for adults and $7 for seniors (60+). Strates Shows and Tops Friendly Markets will be offering an advance sale Weekday One Price Ride Day wristband voucher. Fairgoers who are planning on attending the Fair on a weekday (Monday-Friday) can purchase their One Price Ride Day Voucher for the discount price of $25. These vouchers can be redeemed on the midway any weekday (Monday-Friday) for one ride all day wristband. Regular priced weekday wristbands are $30. Spotlight on Erie County’s Farming Community Earlier this week Erie County and the Southtowns Coalition hosted a Southtowns Farm Tour to promote local agriculture and provide an update on local happenings in the farming community. My district is rich with farm land that produces an abundance of crops annually, in addition to the farms located throughout the rest of Erie County. The tour highlighted just a few of the many farms and growers located here, providing insightful information. Local farming is critical to all of Erie County and we have to support the farms to ensure we have a prosperous county. We are extremely fortunate to have families and businesses here that have been committed to agriculture for generation after generation. One example of longevity that was highlighted on the tour is the W.D. Henry & Sons Farm, which has been operating for more than 125 years. I think many Erie County residents aren’t fully aware of how impressive our local
farms are. Erie County has approximately 1,040 farms, which employee a large workforce. There is more than 142,600 acres of farm land and the market value of products sold exceeds $133,146,000 (based on the 2012 Farm Census). Erie County ranks near the top in several categories, including third in the state for producing nursery, greenhouse, floriculture and sod, and fifth for poultry and egg production. This is incredibly impressive. As we enter the prime growing season, make sure you shop local whenever possible and enjoy the freshest produce available. Many farms have their own stands, in addition to supplying to major grocery stores and farmers markets, making it easy to buy from local farms. Supporting local farms and growers ensures that more money stays here in Erie County. Throughout the summer local communities will be celebrating local agriculture. Don’t forget to stop by the
Springville Dairy Festival (June 5-7); Eden Corn Festival (August 6-9), Erie County Fair (August 13-23) and others. Just a reminder that the final Hazardous Waste Dropoff Event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13 at the ECC South Campus. Accepted item are: pesticides, fertilizers, pool and household chemicals/cleaners, oil-based paints and spray cans, paint thinner, stripper and solvents, batteries (lead acid & rechargeable, oil, gasoline, kerosene and antifreeze and mercury (thermometers, thermostats, metal). Chester A. Hornberger, age, 88, died in his home in East Eden, New York on Friday, May 29, 2015. He was born in East Eden on July 27, 1926. He was a son of Chester and Mary Hornberger. He married his loving wife; Lillian M. Schreiber on April 30, 1955 at St. Mary’s Church in East Eden. They were married for 60 years. Chester enjoyed working on his dairy farm, Hornberger Brother’s Farm until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, bowling and especially fishing. The protection of your family, friends, home and property against fire and other emergencies is provided by trained people. We differ in but one critical respect from members of City Fire Departments - We are all VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS. No one is salaried. Participation in required training is all accomplished during the volunteer’s time away from work and family. Each year our firefighters raise funds through our annual fund drive and at the annual Corn Festival. This money helps to enhance services and equipment utilized to provide even better protection to our community. We will remain a no Fee service.

Boys & Girls Club of Eden Celebrates Members, Volunteers, and Company of the Year Eden, NY – Every May, as the school year draws to a close, the Boys & Girls Club of Eden recognizes its members and supporters with an awards ceremony that highlights exemplary participation in its various programs and special service rendered by members of the community. This year, the Club gave out five particularly noteworthy awards: Boy Member of the Year, Girl Member of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Friend to the Club, and Company of the Year. The 2015 Boy Member of the Year is Michael Teoro Jr, a fifth grader at Eden Elementary School, who has been coming to the Club since 2013. He is a member of the Club’s Junior Staff program and is a frequent participant in all the sports and fitness programs that are offered, including flag football league, dodgeball, and kickball. Michael is a very fair-minded and respectful member who is a wonderful role model for the Club’s younger members and even for his peers. The 2015 Girl Member of the Year is Jenna Coventry, a fourth grader at Eden Elementary School, who started attending the Club in 2012. Jenna is a dedicated student; she can usually be found in the Club’s computer lab after school, working on her homework or studying with a staff member. She is also a frequent participant in arts and crafts activities, as well as Cooking Club and Torch Club, a service group. Jenna was chosen for this honor for many reasons, but she is certainly set apart by her kindness and concern for others. With her friend and former Member of the Year, Alexa, Jenna has started fund and food drives at the Club in order to benefit local charities and food pantries. Since opening in 2002 (and even before), the Club has been the recipient of thousands of hours of volunteer time from many members of the local community. This year, the Club chose to recognize Carol Collins as its 2015 Volunteer of the Year, due to her particularly strong commitment to overall Club well-

being during the past few years. She has worked extensively on acquiring donations for the Club’s annual Bash for Cash auction and she coordinated this year’s fashion show event as the committee chairperson. She is always thinking of ways to improve upon the status quo and she is willing to take on new projects in support of the Club. Even though Carol doesn’t have any children who attend the Club, she takes her volunteerism seriously and is strongly committed to the Club’s success. A few years ago, the Club established the Lifelong Friend to the Club award to honor those supporters who have demonstrated significant on-going commitment to Club service. The 2015 recipient of this award, Mary Ann Clerc, has been involved with the Club for many years as an annual member of the Bash for Cash committee, for which she spends countless hours designing and building the extensive decorations for the event. She is also a member of the unofficial “basket making committee,” which means she attends all basket making nights, when volunteers get together to assemble raffle baskets for the Club’s many fundraisers. As the Club has a fundraiser nearly every other month (sometimes more often), Mary Ann is at the Club frequently and has been doing so for years. The Club truly relies on community support to sus-
tain its programs for youth. Luckily, businesses and residents in Eden have generously provided time, treasure, and talent to the Club to help make it a permanent fixture in the town. The 2015 Company of the Year, Kazoo Boutique, owned by lifelong Eden resident Karen Smith, has assisted the Club since it opened by providing ongoing financial support in the form of general donations and special sponsorships for teams and events. The store has also consistently provided donations of products to fill out baskets and include in the Club’s larger auctions and raffles for many years. The boutique’s commitment to Club events was finally rewarded this spring when the Kazoo Boutique trivia team won the Club’s annual Game Night after participating in the event for the past seven years. It is with the help of these volunteers and others that the Club is able to positively impact the lives of excellent young people like Jenna and Michael. The Club is proud of all its members and grateful for the many supporters it has in the Eden community.
