He may have been doubly noble, but those who study such things say that his personal habits would not have been out of place in a commoner of the time period. He reportedly never bathed, claiming that baths were an unhealthy practice, and he would wear the same clothes for months on end.

COUCH THEATER DVD PREVIEWS By Sam Struckhoff
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Timbuktu” (PG-13) -- In the rolling dunes of Mali, alongside centuries-old cultural artifacts, families face the threat of fundamentalism forcing its way into the rhythm of life. Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) lives simply, herding livestock with his wife, daughter and an adopted child who helps with the work. At the outset of the film, foreign jihadists are shown using priceless relics for target practice. The pastoral scene is infested with newly arrived clerics and heavily-armed young men enforcing rules against everything from music and clothing to soccer and socializing. Director Abderrahmane Sissako creates an enchanting portrayal of fully realized, authentic-feeling characters. Even with the jihadists, you feel like there are real humans under the monstrous deeds. It’s a movie that radiates importance and love for life, without burdening the audience with heavy-handed delivery. “Survivor” (PG-13) -- Milla Jovovich stars as a London-based American security agent. We’re not exactly sure what kind of agent, but she screens visas and rides a motorcycle. She survives a terrorist bombing, and now everyone thinks she’s responsible. The real bad guys send Pierce Brosnan -- an expert assassin who looks a little groggy -- to kill her while some boring exposition unfolds. Jovovich has to thwart a terrorist plot before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve in Times Square, but just like in real life, it’s
Roofing
Ibrahim Ahmed in “Timbuktu” an overhyped event that has most viewers asleep before the end. Brosnan is usually pretty successful in his non-Bond espionage roles, but he doesn’t seem to relish this one. The action sequences mostly revolve around Jovovich running, when her specialty lies more in butt-kicking. “The Forger” (R) -- John Travolta’s performance in this heist flick/family drama is unbelievable. As toughguy art forger Ray Cutter, his sensitive painting talent, his hard-boiled fighting skills, and especially his Boston accent, are thoroughly unconvincing. Ray cuts a deal with Keegan the crime boss (Anson Mount). Keegan will help get Ray an early release from prison, and Ray will forge a Monet painting and swap it with the real-deal in the museum. Ray makes the deal so he can spend some time with his teenage son who has a terminal brain tumor, which doesn’t make much sense, because forging a masterpiece typically takes a while.
“If You Build It” -- This documentary traces an innovative educational program that puts students in charge of increasingly challenging and meaningful building projects. Architects Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller run “Studio H,” the handson program that teaches kids to make good things with their hands to improve their communities and the lives of others. Running without proper funding -- it’s grants, credit and no salary for a year -- the students build a new farmer’s market for their struggling North Carolina town. It’s not an easy trip or a perfect program, but the film looks into an inspiring story of hard work and improvement. Boys and Girls Club Members of the Month
The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Chloe Budziszewski and Talon Newton as May’s Members of the Month (MOTM). Every month, Club Staff deliberate and choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports, games, Daily Challenges, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. Chloe was selected for MOTM because she is extremely selfless and always helps the staff when asked without the slightest bit of hesitation. She is very good-natured and steps up to the plate when called upon. She is also a member of our Junior Staff program that help run the snack shack and she does an excellent job providing friendly service. Chloe is in sixth grade at Lake Shore Middle, Mrs. Agro is her favorite teacher there, and she loves partaking in Chorus. Her favorite food is spaghetti, and she likes the color pink. While at the Club, Chloe most enjoys going outside and hanging out with friends. When she’s at home, you are most likely to find Chloe with her nose in a book as she is a very avid reader. When it comes to her favorite books, “The Land of Stories” by Chris Colfer tops the list. Talon is in fourth grade at J.T. Waugh Elementary where he loves math class. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Wegrzynowski, his favorite color is green, and Hot Pockets are his favorite food. He is also a big fan of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. At home, Talon is all about playing on his Xbox 360 and Xbox One. At the Club, Talon is always seeking out ways he can help out the staff and is lends a great hand. When a job needs to be done in a timely manner, Talon is the man we turn to! He always shows up to the Club with a positive attitude, and his friendly and talkative personality makes him very easy to get along with, whether it’s with the staff or other members. As a first-year member, Talon has been a great addition to our Club family. Along with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the month, Kaitlynn Kielar. Kaitlynn is a new member this year and is extremely good about keeping up with getting her homework done while at the Club. Kaitlynn utilizes her time wisely to complete assignments and mix a bit of work with plenty of fun, which demonstrates her academic dedication. One of her top activities she likes at the Club is doing crossword puzzles in the Power Hour (homework) room. When she’s not at the Club she likes helping others, which speaks volumes about her character. Kaitlynn is currently in 5th grade at A.J. Schmidt Elementary where Mrs. Brumagin is her favorite teacher and she likes learning about science. Her favorite food is steak and she loves the color blue. When you catch her reading, she’s probably lost in her favorite book, “Dolphin Tale 2” (The Novel). Pictured from left to right are Kaitlynn Kielar, Talon Newton, and Chloe Budziszewski Contributed by Justin Simet, Unit Director, Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore __________

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me where you are, my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer for your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish, and it will be granted to you. Grateful thanks.

ANGOLA PENNYSAVER
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Woman Complaints of Feeling Hot DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year-old woman who usually is too hot. When I tell my doctors, they just sort of laugh it off. It is making my life miserable because if I keep the heat or air conditioning where it is comfortable for me, it is too cold for others. I hate summer and stay inside in the air conditioning. I keep the temperature in my house at 64 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and winter. I know other members of my family do not tolerate being out in the sun when it’s hot, but they aren’t plagued with being too hot otherwise. The sensation of being too warm comes and goes. I am about 40 pounds overweight, and have been for most of my life. The sensitivity has intensified as I’ve aged. I had a hysterectomy in my 30s, and I know some of my hormones were off. -- J.R. ANSWER: Heat intolerance is common and has several possible causes. The short list includes excess thyroid hormones, loss of estrogen and being overweight. The long list includes, among many others, some serious conditions, such as polycythemia vera (a blood disorder of having too many red blood cells), inflammation of blood vessels, multiple sclerosis and tumors that secrete substances that can affect blood vessels, such as carcinoid or pheochromocytoma. These are uncommon to rare diseases and usually have other symptoms, and many would likely have pro-
gressed over time. The part of your story that bothers me is that this has been bothering you for years and your doctors haven’t taken it seriously. Even if it isn’t a life-threatening condition, it’s been bothering you, and they should have at least tried to help. It’s time to have a frank discussion with your current or a new doctor and explain that you are concerned about this, that it’s affecting your life and comfort, and that you want to be taken seriously. I’m not saying your doctor needs to evaluate you for everything on the long list, but he or she does need to listen, think and explain. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it better to take Lipitor at night? Is that true for all statins? -- M.E. ANSWER: The cholesterol in our blood comes from the food we eat and also by the cholesterol our body makes. Most cholesterol synthesis happens at night. So, it’s better to take a statin at night, particularly for statins
that don’t stay in the body a long time (this is referred to as a short half-life). Lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), fluvastatin (Lescol) and simvastatin (Zocor) have short half-lives, and data have shown better results with these taken at night. On the other hand, atorvastatin (Lipitor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor) have long halflives, so it isn’t so important to take these at night. Naturally, if you are taking any statin, you should continue a careful diet as well. Taking a medication doesn’t take away the harm of a poor diet. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

A.J. Schmidt Weather Presentation
A.J. Schmidt Elementary Kindergarten students in Mrs. Dimmer's, Mrs. Lyford's and Mrs. Gizzi's classes were amazed as they intently watched Mr. Russell, father our kindergartener Troy Russell, from Time Warner Weather on the Ones demonstration on how many different weather systems are formed. He created a cloud in a pop bottle by using water and heat. He also had the kids act like atoms to show how atoms work when they are warm and cold. They especially liked when he sucked an egg into a bottle to show how air pressure works! Each child received a free box of crayons and a pencil for being such a wonderful audience. Southtowns Catholic School "Tuck Everlasting" Project
Students in Mrs. Amber Friend's Grade 6 ELA Class recently read the book "Tuck Everlasting". It is a fantasy children's novel by Natalie Babbitt. It was published in 1975. It explores the concept of immortality and the reasons why it might not be as desirable as it appears to be. The kids were given several options for a project on the book. They filmed commercials about the water, made maps, powerpoint presentations, rewrote the final chapter of how they felt it should end or made dioramas of pivotal scenes. New Era Takes Two Titles At Evans Tournament
The New Era Diamond Girls placed first in the 10U and 14U divisions in the 16th annual Evans Memorial Day Weekend Softball Tournament held May 22-24th. The grand event consisted of 40 teams from the surrounding area including teams from Canada playing at the EYB complex and the Lakeshore Senior High and Middle school fields. The weather was beautiful and the events went off as scheduled with the help of an all-volunteer staff of EYB supporters led by EYB president Angel Rosborough and her husband Eric. We could list all the volunteers but that would put us in danger of forgetting a name. So instead we will not mention each by name but thank the volunteers as an entire group. The tournament consisted of 4 divisions, 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U. The New Era Diamond girls beat WNY Sting in the 10U final. The Clarence White Red Devils beat the Eden Lady Raiders in the 12U final. New Era Diamond Girls beat Hamburg Xtreme in the 14U final. In the 16U final, NY Inferno Righetti beat the Scarborough Rays in an exciting 14-13 final game. The Evans Force had 5 teams in the tournament including one in 10U, 12U and 14U and two in 16U. All the Evans teams competed hard with the 10U winning their first game of the season verus Clarence. 12U team and 16U Diamond team each went 1-3 for the tournament while 16U Widger went 0-4 but nearly had an upset in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday vs. Grand Island. Evans Force 14U had the most success of the Evans teams as they won two games on Sunday to advance to the semi-finals. The highlight of the day was their defeat of no. 2 seed Lou Gehrig Pogo in eight innings to advance to the semi final. In the game, Evans trailed 5-1 in the third but battled back to tie the score 7-7 in the sixth with a triple by Evie Butlak to score Hailee Kerins followed up by a double by Kymis Nance to score Butlak. The masterful play at second base by Tabitha Allen, brillant catching by Maggie Mignoli and the clutch pitching of Evie Butlak allowed them to get to the eighth inning. Evie Butlak struck out Maddy Lane of Lou Gehrig in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third. Lane had a 3 for 3 game going with a triple last time up along with a single and double. Butlak was not done yet with a bases loaded triple in the eighth to propel the Force to a 11-8 victory. Although Xtreme beat the Force the next game it did not take away from some fine performances by Force players. To reach the semi final, Julia Hill pitched 6 innings allowing only 2 hits and 4 walks to lead the Force to a 9-2 win and the quarter finals. In the Lou Gehrig game Kymi Nance, Caitlin Burbige, Tabitha Allen (2 RBI) and Sam Dils (2 RBI) all hit doubles while Grace Barker got a single with Hailee Kerins going 3 for 4 and 3 singles. Southtowns Catholic School Boat Project
Every year the Grade 3 class has a boat project assigned to them. It is like a right of passage when the younger grades look at all the finished boats in the hall. Everyone looks forward to certain things in school and this is one of them. The rules are that it has to float, be less than 15 inches long, holds cargo, has a name, some life saving feature and must be presented to the class. The students did a great job with their boats. It's always amazing to see what creative projects come out of our students. Thank you Miss Johnson for continuing the tradition. Q: I have a mustache cup of white ironstone trimmed in gold. I paid $45 for it. Are they collectible, and did I get a good deal? -- Jim, Topeka, Kansas A: Mustache cups were popular throughout the Victorian-era, when facial hair on men was the style. These cups had a ledge inside the rim that kept liquids away from the upper-lip hair to keep it tidy and prevent mustache wax from melting. A small opening allowed liquids to pass through. Most mustache cups I’ve seen in shops and at antique malls have been priced in the $25 to $45 range. Some of the more ornate ones sell above $45. I have had a mustache for the better part of four decades and have a small collection of the cups. I use one every morning, and it is one of my little pleasures in life.
Q: My sister bought a piece of Pyrex from a dealer who told her it was from the 1930s. I always thought Pyrex was from the 1950s. Can you clarify this for me? -Mike, Alamo Heights, Texas A: Pyrex was developed in 1912 to resist the heat shock that caused railway brakemen’s lanterns to crack or break when exposed to the elements. The term Pyrex came to describe most heat-resistance glass used in the home. It was first made by the Corning Glass Works and its licensees. David J. Shotwell, author of “Glass A to Z,” points out that Pyrex is made with borax and is technically a borpsilicate glass. *** Q: I was a fan of The Beatles during the 1960s and ‘70s. I have a lunchbox with thermos made by Aladdin. I have been told it could be worth quite a bit. -- Terry,
Metarie, Louisiana A: Your lunchbox was manufactured in 1965, and in reasonable condition could be worth about $500. Incidentally, The Beatles first appeared on American network television in 1964, the year before your lunchbox was made. The group disbanded in 1971. John Lennon was murdered outside his New York City home in 1980, and George Harrison died in 2001. Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney still perform. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. FLASHBACK By Mick Harper
1. To which conflict does Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Cruel War” refer? 2. Which group released “Everybody Loves a Clown”? 3. Name the song with the misheard lyric, “I hit my head kinda hard on the dance floor.” 4. Who penned and released “Orchard Road”? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Look around you, all you see are sympathetic eyes. Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home.” Answers 1. Most likely the Civil War, with the female singer saying she’ll dress as a man and sign up to fight to be near her love. 2. Gary Lewis & the Playboys, in 1965. It was used in an episode of “The Simpsons” in 1992. 3. “Telephone,” by Lady Gaga. The correct lyric is, “I left my head and my heart on the dance floor.” 4. Leo Sayer, in 1983. The song was based on an all-night phone booth call to his estranged wife. 5. “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel in 1968. The duo had been asked to create a few songs for the coming film “The Graduate.” At the time they were working on a song tentatively titled “Mrs. Roosevelt” and changed the name.
