Erie County Legislator Mills Announces 2015 Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser Schedule
Erie County Legislator John J. Mills announces the schedule for his 9th annual Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers to support the library branches in his district. In total, these popular events have raised more than $47,800 to support ongoing efforts to provide quality programming and materials at each of the branches in Legislator Mills’ District. “I am excited to once again partner with the libraries in my district to host the Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers and support the branches’ efforts to meet the needs of the community. Each year the events grow in popularity and we have a great turnout. National Cotton Candy Day
Thursday June 11th was the underappreciated holiday of “national cotton candy day”. However, at the Boys and Girls Club of Eden the members were able to celebrate this holiday! In Cooking Club the members learned about food science. They were able to do an experiment looking at the classic baking soda and vinegar reaction, and learn about how sugar can change forms when it is heated. After learning about cotton candy, staff member Alex Bianchi made cotton candy for the Club members to enjoy. __________

Norman Soule’
Norman R. Soule’, 95, of Eden, died June 11. Norman was born on Feb. 4, 1920 to James Soule’ & Maude Sheffield in Atco, New Jersey. He grew up & went to school in Randolph, NY. With a love for sports, he played soccer, volleyball & basketball during & after high school. In 1942 he joined the service and was a Gunner in the Navy Armed Guard aboard a Merchant Marine Ship in WWII. Once out of the service, he married Florence Heiderman of Lake View and made their home in Eden raising 4 children, Bill, Jim, Rosemary & Bob. Norm was a
Carpenter Foreman & over the years he worked for Leising Brothers, Radimaker Brothers & Henrich Construction. He was a proud and life long member of the Newell Falkner Post 880 Am. Legion. When the Post on Legion Drive was built in 1955, he was head of the Building Committee where thousands of hours of labor, materials & equipment were donated by members, as well as the community. With a wife that loved to dance, they took dancing lessons & joined numerous dance clubs over the years doing ballroom & square dance. Their favorite song is “In the Mood”. Once retired, Norm & Florence moved to Ocala, FL, bought an RV & started traveling. Norm got as much enjoyment planning trips as he did traveling. They have been to every state in the US & Europe. When asked where was his favorite, he’d say “I enjoyed them all with each place having something special!” Norm enjoyed helping people, while living in Eden; he was a Little League Baseball

Coach & joined the Eden Emergency Squad & Rescue Team. In Florida, he & Florence delivered “Meals on Wheels” until he was 93. He loved animals, when he & Florence would take their morning walk in Florida, he would talk to the rabbits, squirrels, dogs, osprey & etc. along the way saying his “good mornings” & the animals would always answer back, (like Dr. Doolittle). A crane would even come tapping to their glass doors every now & then, wanting a piece of bologna. Norm’s other interests were camping, hiking , fishing, watching sports on TV, and making wood crafts. He would take his creations to craft shows & enjoyed talking to the people. He even became a dancing instructor & a Disc Jockey for the Senior Center Ballroom Dances in Ocala, FL. Norm was also a member of the Soule Kindred in America Inc. which originated in 1969 of ancestors of George Soule from the Mayflower. In October of 2009, Norman & other WWII veterans took the Honor Flight from Oca-
la, FL to Washington, D.C. to tour the WWII Memorial; he said it was a reminiscing and emotional experience. When the plane carrying these members of “The Greatest Generation” finally touched ground again in FL, the family, friends, relatives & total strangers erupted into cheers and applause that surely was heard all the way up to heaven’s door. Survivors include his wife Florence, his children William (Beth) Soule’, James (Jendy) Soule’, Rosemary (Dennis) Peters, and Robert (Cindy) Soule’, 9 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren. A Graveside & Military Service will be held at the Eden Evergreen Cemetery on Aug. 1st at 10am. Words of sympathy may be made on www.LaingFuneralHome.com __________
Eden Stampede 4-H Club Community Service Project
On Saturday June 6th the Eden Stampede 4-H Club did a special community service project. We planted pretty flowers in the “Welcome to Eden” flowerbox on Route 20 & Shadagee road. First we pulled weeds, next we tilled up the dirt with our shovels, then planted the flowers, watered, added mulch, and watered again! We had a great time doing this project! Maybe you even drove by and saw us, we were the girls in the blue shirts waving and working hard getting our hands dirty to make this town more beautiful! So, next time you drive on Shadagee Road look for colorful flowers in the Eden sign flower box. We hope that we have inspired you to help our town even in the smallest of ways. Making Vitamin D Without Sunlight
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about vitamin D-3 pills. How does 400 mg fit into such a tiny pill? I also thought you needed sunlight to make vitamin D. -- A.S. ANSWER: Four hundred mg is very small. Most of the tablet isn’t even vitamin D -- it’s starch and other materials to hold the tablet together. The skin does make vitamin D-3 from precursors in the presence of sunlight. However, there are several factors that affect this process. During winter months at moderately high latitudes (above the line from Los Angeles to Atlanta), the sunlight might not be strong enough to efficiently convert enough vitamin D, so many are vitamin-D-deficient during winter. If your goal is to get faster and win races, then you need to practice going faster. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Woman in Gold” (PG-13) -- Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altman in this real-life story about an Austrian-born woman mounting a legal battle to reclaim an iconic painting that was seized when the Nazis took Vienna, and was claimed by the Austrian government after the war. Fighting at her side is young lawyer Randal Schoenal (Ryan Reynolds, doing something a little different), who develops his own personal attachment to the case. It all depends on how engaged you can be with Altman’s struggle to recover the painting, “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” by Gustav Klimt (you’ve probably seen a poster of it if you’ve ever been near a college dorm). To raise the stakes, the movie endeavors to make you feel for Altman not as somebody fighting for an ineffably valuable painting, but somebody trying to reclaim part of her lost family.
Diane Keaton, Morgan Freeman in “5 Flights Up” on the charm of Keaton and Freeman, while the plot -especially those little subplots -- are like roads to nowhere. It’s a common pitfall for book-to-movie adaptations. Still, it’s a sweet and smart look at the far end of long-term love. “71” (R) -- A young British private, Gary Hook (Jack O’Connell) is left stranded and struggling to survive in hostile Northern Ireland in 1971 during the full swing of the bloody, decades-long conflict known as the Troubles. Based on real accounts of what happened one night in Belfast, Hook is left wounded after a riot separates him from his unit. In one long night, Hook faces threats from all sides, doesn’t know where to go or whom to trust. The film works both as an examination of modern conflict where lines are blurry, and as expertly crafted action.
“5 Flights Up” (PG-13) -- A couple of retired lovebirds have nested in the same Brooklyn apartment since they bought it in the 1970s. Alex (Morgan Freeman) is a stubborn-but-loveable painter, and Ruth (Diane Keaton) is a neurotic-but-loveable ex-teacher. The neighborhood has changed a lot, and property values have pierced the sky, so the endearing couple puts their place on the market and start shopping for a new home. An alleged terrorist threat snarls traffic in the city, and there’s an even less-relevant story about a sick dog. “The Slow West” (R) -The movie only functions Here’s a killer Western with
a brain, great acting and a Gatling-gun soundtrack. A baby-faced, upper-crust Scottish 16-year-old named Jay Cavendish (Kodi SmitMcPhee) should last about as long as a snowball in this version of the Old West, if it weren’t for his wry, gunslinging travel-buddy, Silas (Michael Fassbender, impeccable as always). Jay’s on a mission to find his lost love and experience the West, while all manner of scum and savagery close in. With this first feature film, writer-director John Maclean makes his entrance like a desperado tearing through the saloon doors.
