2015 “Movie Night in the Park” Season was a Success
The Town of Evan’s has recently concluded its seventh season of “Movie Night in the Park”. This year, over 500 total moviegoers were treated to a Bounce House, Pound Rockout Workout Presentation, and showing of The Princess Bride and Disney Pixar’s Toy Story. Despite being slightly windy on both nights, the movies went off without a hitch and no one seemed to mind the slight gusts. In addition to bouncing on the bounce house, audience members were invited to participate in Garage Fitness’s Pound Rockout Workout, directed by Judy Connors. The simulated drumming and upbeat popular music that went along with the exercise got the audience moving, and the kids loved it so much they asked for more. Song after song, both children and adults alike, followed Judy’s instruction and had a blast. “It was great to see so many families enjoying the park during a warm summer evening. We owe the success of Movie Night to our loyal sponsors including: Pat’s Pizzeria, Evans PBA, Evans Bank, Lake Shore Central Teachers Association, Bouncy Jumper, Maria’s Pizzeria and the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore,” said Lori Szewczyk, director of community development for the Town of Evans. The 7th season was such a success and we hope to make “Movie Night in the Park” a Town of Evans tradition for many years to come. FRANKFURTERS BAND TO CLOSE 33rd SEASON OF CONCERT AT ANGOLA GAZEBO
At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26th, the popular Frankfurter German show band will present the final concert of the 33rd season at the gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. The first concert was held in the park on August 24th, 1983. The evening is sponsored by Evans Bank and Evans Agency. Shown in the photo are the current six members of the Frankfurter band standing in front of an array of newly installed brewery equipment at the Flying Bison Brewery in Buffalo. The band is celebrating over 30 years of existence. They have played throughout Western New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Canada and conducted a ten day tour of southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein. The band features special numbers using a large set of various size bells, 13 foot long alpen horns and a singing saw! Refreshments are available at the park. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the last concert of the 2015 season. The rain location will be the nearby New Angola Theatre.

After some years, Addy’s unaging beauty draws suspicion, so she changes identities every decade to keep her immortality a secret -- she’s kinda selfish. This keeps her from getting too close to anyone, or falling in love, until she falls in love with a guy whose father (Harrison Ford) recognizes her as the lost love of his youth. The film goes for that dreamy, timeless, starlit moody look, and achieves it across different time periods. It all looks good, but the story feels undercooked. Things limp along at times, and the ending feels a little off-kilter. “Cyber-Seniors” (PG) -How do you get a senior citizen from knowing nothing about the computers to deftly hustling Facebook friends to check out their latest Youtube video? Very patiently. That’s one lesson in this charming documentary about a group of retirees paired with teen volunteers who teach them how to use the Internet. When one senior posts her own cooking video to YouTube, it starts a contest among the old folks to see who can get the most “hits” online. While at first, the cluelessness of the old folks is played for laughs, the real focus of the story comes from the new connections made and possibilities opened up. It’s not meant to be an instructional film, but it does teach us a lot about

A free man again, Frankie gets together with his old robbery pals (Tory Kittles and rapper Akon) and pulls James in as a driver on their next job. James is trying to make a real living and patch things up with his girl (Jordana Brewster), but Frankie reels him in with guilt, and James botches yet another robbery. The two brothers are then forced to help with an even bigger, heist-ier heist. Is this the One Last Job that leads to a better life? Getting the answer might not be as exciting as you think.

Evans Democratic Club Held Annual Picnic
Sunny skies favored a great turnout to enjoy Lakeside sausage and potluck offerings at the annual Evans Democratic Club picnic. This was held at the Evans Town Park on Sunday, August 9. Those attending had a chance to chat one-on-one with Town and County candidates for office. Dr Pepper Snapple (DPS) and national non-profit KaBOOM! awarded The Evans Playground Committee a $15,000 Let's Play Community Construction Grant that will be used to build phase I of the beach side playground at Evans Town Park. The grant is part of Let's Play, a community partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple to get kids and families active nationwide. Unstructured, child-directed play has proven to help kids develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually, yet today's kids have less time and fewer opportunities to play than any previous generation. As a result of expanded Let's Play grants and projects, more than 1 million kids will benefit from new or improved playgrounds around the nation between 2014 and 2016. "We are so excited that we were awarded a Let's Play grant!," said Melissa Atzrott, Project Leader. "Now we can build phase 1 of the new playground for the children of our community." The grant will be used along with the money the town has been able to fundraise to build phase 1 of the new playground in the Evans Town Park. The new playground will be geared toward 5 to 12 year olds. The children of Evans deserve a safe place to play, exercise, and build social skills. This grant makes this dream a reality. Created in 2011, Let’s Play provides the tools, places and inspiration to make playa daily priority. The initiative began with a three-year commitment to KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that all kids get the joyful childhood filled with play they need to thrive. Through the first three years, they built 41 playgrounds, with more than 2,300 DPS employees contributing nearly 19,000 volunteer hours in the construction, and provided grants ranging from $500 to $30,000 for the improvement of another 2,004 playgrounds by the end of 2013. Sugar Alcohols Aren’t Sugars or Alcohol DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed as being prediabetic and told to watch my sugar intake. So I now read the nutrition facts on packages. However, I am confused about the listed sugars. Sometimes the label includes both “sugar” and “sugar alcohols.” For instance, a package can read “sugars 1 g” and “sugar alcohols 11 g.” Would my sugar intake be 1 g or 12 g? What is the difference, and what should I avoid/limit? -- B.D. ANSWER: First, congratulations on reading labels. There is a lot of good information to be found that can help you decide whether something is a healthy food for you. That being said, sugar alcohols are confusing. Sugar alcohols have nothing to do with the type of alcohol in beer, wine or spirits, and they aren’t sugars either. A sugar alcohol, such as sorbitol or xylitol, is an incompletely absorbed carbohydrate. Since they are incompletely absorbed, you get only some of the calories, and your blood sugar goes up less than if you had had the same amount of sweetness with regular sugar. A rough but reasonable rule of thumb is to count about half the grams of sugar alcohol as sugar, for the purposes of counting sugar grams. So in your example, it would be about 6.5 grams of sugar. You might wonder what happens to the unabsorbed sugar alcohol. It continues through your GI tract and acts as a laxative. Some people are very sensitive and will have diarrhea with just a little sugar alcohol; others tolerate more.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been suffering for many years from miserable episodes of perineal pain related to my benign, enlarged prostate. My urologist’s recommendation of NSAIDs and sitz baths has afforded very limited relief. I would appreciate any suggestions you have to offer. -- J.S.K. ANSWER: I see a lot of people with benign enlargement of the prostate, and the most common symptoms are inability to empty the bladder easily and having to urinate frequently. Persistent pain would make me concerned that the prostate enlargement is not the cause, or not the only cause, of the pain. I would think carefully about a bladder stone, chronic inflammation of the prostate and interstitial cystitis as a short list. Chronic pelvic pain is a condition much more frequently encountered in women, and there are specialists in evaluating just
that complex problem. Men can get chronic pelvic pain too, and I am concerned that it often is assumed to be due to the prostate, when there are many other possibilities. It’s time for you to be re-evaluated. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses treatments for enlargement as well as cancer. Boys & Girls Club Adds New Feature
New to the Lake Shore Boys & Girls Club this coming September will be a game that’s catching on across the country called GaGa Ball! This fast-paced activity is fun for all ages, from the youngest of kids to the oldest of adults. The Club is extremely excited to introduce the indoor/outdoor game to our returning members and new members alike, as many recreation facilities do not have one so we are very fortunate. It’s definitely sure to be a new Club favorite! Check out the link on our website (bgclakeshore. org) to see the game in action. “I have seen this game absolutely take off in popularity, and the fact that it can be played by a group of kids of varying ages is a huge plus,” said Justin Simet, unit director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake Shore. “The kids work on agility, motor skills, flexibility, strategy, and teamwork without even realizing it, and each round moves so quickly that it keeps everyone engaged for an extended period of time. I couldn’t be more pleased that our Club now has the ability to offer this game and it should be a great attraction for the youth of our community.” The Club would also like to thank Sam’s Lumber Company, Lowe’s Home Improvement (of Orchard Park), and Home Depot of Blasdell for donating supplies to make this project possible. We could not have done it without their extremely generous support! Another fresh addition to the Club this year is a brand new DJ Booth! Using a grant graciously provided by Pizza Hut, the Club was able to purchase DJ equipment for middle school Club members to learn how to operate and use on a daily basis to crank some tunes for all the kids to listen and dance to, and provide an even more fun atmosphere! The full sound system should be a big draw for not just younger members, but older youth as well. It will also be available for use during the Teen Nights that will be held at the Club during the colder months this year. We are currently accepting membership applications (grades 2-12) for the upcoming school year beginning on September 2nd (first day of school). Applications are available on our website to print, or you may stop by the Club for a copy. Scholarship opportunities are available for those who qualify. Local Business Donates Life Jackets to the Town of Evans Police Department
Connors Hot Dog Stand owned by the Connors and Erickson families located in Angola on the Lake donated fifteen life jackets to the Evans Police Department. These life jackets will be placed in all Evans Police vehicles. On July 30th 2015 the Evans Police Department encountered a tragic event. An Evans Officer saved an 11 year old girl from drowning but almost lost his own life. If and when Evans Police encounter another situation where they have to enter the waters of Lake Erie, they will have the proper equipment. New York Army National Guard Announces Soldier Promotions
Major General Patrick A. Murphy, The Adjutant General for the State of New York, announces the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership. Vincent Pupo from Lake View, N.Y. and serving with the 105th Military Police Company is promoted to the rank of Private. Paul Hatley from Derby, N.Y. and serving with the Company A (Engineer), 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion is promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential. These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard. Evans Force 10U Finishes Season On A High Note
The Evans Force 10U softball team wrapped up their first season of play in impressive fashion by winning the Silver Creek Tournament. The group of 8, 9 and 10 year olds beat Valley by a 21-8 score to advance to the Championship game. Led by timely hits from Liz Jarzynski and Emma Langdon, the Force offense lived up to their nickname as Audrey Torres, Kate DiMartino, Emma Rozborski, and Trinity Kehoe each scored three times. Paige Silagyi and Olivia Galvez also contributed to the strong offensive output by each scoring twice. The Force faced host Silver Creek in the Championship. In a defensive affair, the Force were led by strong pitching from Liz Jarzynski who struck out 15 batters in 6 innings. Key hits by Abby Browning and Samantha Heppel fueled a 5 run 6th inning and gave Evans an 8-5 victory. Evans continued their momentum the very next day in a MGSL playoff game against Wheatfield. Playing with only 8 girls, the Force avenged an earlier season loss by toppling Wheatfield 9-7. Kate DiMartino, Abby Browning and Audrey Torres had hits that sparked a 7 run 3rd inning. In the 4th inning, Trinity Kehoe scored what turned out to be the winning run as she scored from first base on a stolen base and an overthrow. Liz Jarzynski scored 3 runs and pitched all 6 innings, striking out 12 batters. Jarzynski preserved the 9-7 victory by catching a pop fly and doubling up the runner on third base in an exciting conclusion to the game. Contributed by Tim Kehoe __________
