'94 Team Inducted into Alumni Hall of Fame

As part of the North Collins Jr.-Sr. High School Homecoming Festivities held on Saturday, September 27, 2014, the 1994 Boys Varsity Soccer Team was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Boys Varsity Soccer Team winning the Class D State Championship title. The plaque was presented by Marty Neifergold (Alumni Hall of Fame coordinator) to the 1994 Boys Varsity coach Roy Hendrix and was accepted by team members present at the event. The plaque has been placed on display in the trophy showcase in the gymnasium foyer. It will be moved to the newly painted Hall of Fame Wall after next years induction. The 1994 Boys team obviously still knows how to play the game as they were also victorious in the 3rd Annual Alumni Game played the same day. The 1994 team asked to play one more time as a time and challenged all other alumni to play against them. They 1994 Boys Team remains victorious winning the Alumni Game in a shoot out by a score of 5-4. Thomas J. Smith, age 84, of Eden, New York died Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at home with his loving wife by his side. He was born April 28, 1930 in Buffalo, New York, the son of late Edwin L. and Eleanor C. Smith. Thomas worked for Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company for 41 years. He retired in 1991. He married his loving wife Mary Jane “Janie” Thompson on December 27, 1980. Thomas was a Past President for the Eden Chamber of Commerce. He was the devoted husband of Mary Jane “Janie” (nee: Thompson) and late Myrtle McClory; The loving father of Thomas J. (Phyllis) Smith Jr., David G. Smith, Cynthia Beth Smith, Traci E. Johnson and William R. (Matthew Scudder) Smith; brother of Sr. Maura J. Smith, late E. Heartworm is a worm that is transmitted by mosquitoes. The Mosquito has to bite an infected dog and ingest the larva from that positive dog. The larva in the positive dog develops from an early stage larva to a mid stage larva. This mid stage larva is the infective state of heartworm disease. When the mosquitoes takes a blood meal from a negative dog at the end of its meal it “spits” the mid stage larva that then finds the hole from the blood meal and enters the blood stream thru the capillaries. From the capillaries it travels to the heart and lungs were it develops into a foot long worm. This worm causes inflammation of the veins in the lungs and in the chambers of the heart.The inflammation or the infection can be so severe that it can block the blood flow to the affected area. If any of the worms die at any given point, they can dislodge and become a large emboli that can get lodged in any of the blood vessels in the body leading to death. Heartworm disease is a preventable disease. While there are many available products on the market, they all work by killing the larva at the mid stage when it enters the dog, before it develops into the late stage larva. Most products are given once a month orally or topically. There is one product on the market that is a one time injection that last 6 months. A few flea products are combined with heartworm prevention. All heartworm preventatives, when purchased thru a veterinarian, come with a 100% guarantee that if the product fails, the pharmaceutical company will pay for the treatment of the patient as long as the patient has been tested once a year and has been on heartworm prevention year around. The benefits of using heartworm prevention year around is the warranty, dogs can still get infected during winter, and harder to stop a habit and miss a dose. Heartworm positive cases have increased in this area steadily over the years, mostly due to changes in climate, as well as the increase of people traveling to the South with their pets. SCS Students attended the ground breaking at the Little Church at SJPII. Father Peter Karalus blessed the ground and the people doing the work before the official hole was dug. “Earth to Echo” (PG) -- This found-footage feature feels like a return to the classic blockbuster kidventure flick, but updated with just enough new-millennium style. Tuck, Munch and Alex (Astro, Reese C. Hartwig and Teo Halm) are the three closest pre-teen pals in their little Nevada neighborhood. The boys desperately want to save the town from a freeway expansion that will demolish it and separate the trio. Adventure calls when the boys receive strange messages on their cellphones, all leading to Echo, a stranded little alien who needs help. “Snowpiercer” (R) -- This bold-action science-fiction flick has been burning down the film festivals, despite its silly name. When mankind tries to control the climate with a chemical solution, we accidentally freeze the whole world. The last living

people have to stay aboard a constantly moving supertrain called Snowpiercer -- and there’s trouble brewing with the rabble who are forced to live in the back of the train and “know their place.” Chris Evans plays the hardened hero who leads a scheme to overthrow the train’s ruling class. This movie has a wide array of sci-fi and pop-culture inspiration, all used to great effect. Director Joon-ho Bong of Korea is known for “The Host,” a seemingly typical monster flick that turned out to be astoundingly engaging, emotional and fun. This same inventiveness is evident in this newest offering, which also boasts a bigger budget and goes into the streets. In the a globe-spanning A-list cast. near-ish future, the government gives everybody one “The Purge: Anarchy” (R) night a year where all crime -- Slightly better than last is legal. The action follows year’s purge, this one leaves Sergeant (Frank Grillo), the suburban fortress and a grizzled loner who ends
