We had a lot of fun when we visited Awald's on Shirley Road in North Collins. We picked out large and small pumpkins, got lost in a corn maize and went on a hay ride. We really liked shooting corn out of the corn cannon and having our faces painted. Then we got to have cookies and hot chocolate. It was a great day! __________

Southtowns Catholic School Grade 1 Makes Spooklies

Students in Grade 1 read "The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin" in class. Spookley is a square pumpkin that is sad at first because he can't roll like the round pumpkins in the patch. But a storm comes and being square has its advantages. After the storm, Spookley is celebrated instead of ridiculed for his difference. The children talked about how everyone is different in their own way and then made a "Spookley" of their very own. COUCH THEATER - DVD PREVIEWS

OCTOBER 19, 2014 / PAGE 7

By Sam Struckhoff

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Begin Again” (R) -- This is one of those enchanting movies where the music almost eclipses the entire story. Greta (Keira Knightley) is a songwriter and sometimes-singer who’s hit a low point, breathing her feelings into a microphone in a stale little lounge in New York City. Her voice has a deep effect on Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced music producer who’s hit an even lower low. Dan convinces Greta to take a chance and produce a record with him, shunning studios and making music in the streets. This is the follow-up feature from John Carney, the director of the wildly successful, low-budget musicians-in-love movie “Once.” Carney -- a musician himself -- knows how to make audiences feel that love of music. Funny thing is, he got better dramatic performances in “Once,” when his actors were musicians instead of movie stars.

yet? How about a crimesolving exorcist who works for the NYPD?! Fortunately, there’s a 2001 memoir by a real-life cop detailing his “experiences” fighting the supernatural. Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) has great copintuition, a smart-mouth partner (Joel McHale) and a bone to pick with the Man Upstairs. He meets up with a too-cool-for-Sunday-school renegade priest (Edgar Ramirez) who helps Sarchie realize that he should be doing the Lord’s work. Despite combining the crime drama and supernatural thriller genres, the action feels by-the-numbers. The most the movie has to offer is a climactic exorcism and a lot of sudden noises to try to fry your nerves. What’s missing is the right psychological trickery to make all of that spookiness into real nightmare fuel.

“Life of Crime” (R) -- Frank Dawson (Tim Robbins) has a lot of money, a gorgeous wife (Jennifer Aniston) “Deliver Us from Evil” (R) and a team of bumbling -- Sick of exorcism movies career-criminals plotting

ly made Dad-gets-revenge flicks. Hopefully, this last lump indicates that we’re near the end. Paul (Jason Patric) is your generic knife-jawed protagonist, playing it safe as a mechanic with presumably dark secrets in his past. You know the drill: Baddies kidnap innocent daughter; Dad grunts his way through a homicidal rampage until the credits roll. John Cusack, who plays a brooding buddy to the boring hero, looks like he’s in literal agony from being on-screen. Bruce Willis plays a bad guy DOG OF THE WEEK “The Prince” (R) -- Since who looks about as bored as “Taken” was such a sur- the audience. prise hit, we’ve been stuck in a pain-parade of shoddito kidnap her for a huge ransom. The masterminds didn’t realize one important detail: Frank is an amoral slob who can save a lot of money if his wife disappears, since he wants to get rid of her and go fulltime with his enthusiastic mistress in South Beach. It’s an uncomfortable realization for the kidnappers and the wife, really. This crime-comedy unfolds into a full-on confusing caper. The chuckles are worth the rental fee.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

• On Nov. 1, 1512, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, one of Italian artist Michelangelo’s finest works, is first exhibited to the public. Michelangelo’s epic ceiling frescoes consist of nine panels devoted to biblical world history. The most famous of these is The Creation of Adam, a painting in which the arms of God and Adam are stretching toward each other. • On Oct. 27, 1858, Theodore Roosevelt, the future 26th president of the United States, is born in New York City. As president, he insisted on a strong navy, encouraged the construction of the Panama Canal and set aside land for America’s first national parks and monuments. • On Oct. 29, 1915, President Woodrow Wilson assured social activist Jane Addams that he had no intention of lead-

in’s tomb in Moscow’s Red Square. When Vladimir Lenin died in 1924, he was embalmed and placed in a mausoleum featuring glass casing. • On Oct. 30, 1974, 32-yearold Muhammad Ali becomes the heavyweight champion of the world for the second time when he knocks out 25-yearold champ George Foreman in the “Rumble in the Jungle.” Seven years before, Ali had lost his title when the government accused him of draftdodging. ing the U.S. into war; he was re-elected on the slogan “He Kept Us Out of War.” By April 1917 Wilson delivered his war message to Congress and the U.S. entered World War I. • On Oct. 28, 1922, hundreds of people gather around radios to hear the first-ever crosscountry telephone broadcast of a college football game,

• On Nov. 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signs a bill designating a federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., to be observed on the third Monday of January. King was awarded the Nobel • On Oct. 31, 1961, five Peace Prize in 1964. years after Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev denounced Stalinism, Joseph Stalin’s embalmed body is removed from public display in Lenplayed between the Chicago Maroons and the Princeton Tigers. Red Ribbon Week Red Ribbon week is celebrated across the United States at the end of every October in honor of Federal Drug Enforcement Administration Agent, Enrique Camarena. Now, National Red Ribbon week has become the most visible time of year for substance abuse prevention efforts. Each day recognizes a different theme to help kids stay healthy and drug free. Thursday, October 23rd: “Recognize Role Models Day”- Students fill out special ribbons to give to adults that have helped them stay drug free. Friday, October 24th: “Love Yourself, Be Drug Free Day”- Today is about making healthy choices, whether it be eating an apple for breakfast instead of a donut, or running around outside after school rather than sitting in front of a video game system. Monday, October 27th: “Wear Red & Plant the Promise Day”- Encourage everyone you know to wear as much red as possible today, and plant red tulips, furthering your commitment to remaining drug free! Tuesday, October 28th: “Team Up Against Drugs Day”- Wear your favorite sports team jerseys and t-shirts along with red ribbons. This is a great reminder that everyone has a part to play in the TEAM effort to stop substance abuse. Wednesday, October 29th: “Take a Stand Day” - Today, everyone should try to wear red and create a bulletin board or put up a pledge for all to sign in the hallway at school. Thursday, October 30th: “Create Your Own Red Ribbon Theme Day:”Come up with a healthy, RED theme. Friday, October 31st: “Drugs Are Scary Day”- Incorporate signs with drug-free slogans at your Halloween costume parades and parties- and don’t forget to “Say BOO To Drugs!”

VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves

High Demand Seamps Caregiver Program The Government Accounting Office report “Actions Needed to Address HigherThan-Expected Demand for the Family Caregiver Program” is grim. The report assesses the program that was established in 2010 to support family caregivers of seriously injured post-9/11 veterans. The program was to include a stipend equal to the cost of home health assistance, respite, training, health insurance for the caregiver and mental-health support. First, however, a caregiver must be approved and the veteran assessed. Fact: The Veterans Health Administration guesstimated that 4,000 caregivers would be approved for the program. Already 15,600 caregivers have been approved. The Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers haven’t been able to keep up with the workload. They put ONE support coordinator staffer in each medical center. Additionally, onsite nurses and physicians were to handle home visits and medical assessments

within a certain timeframe. They weren’t ready either, and some 500 caregivers are being added to the roster every month. Fact: The staff didn’t have access to the workload data they needed to monitor the effects of the program because the software was developed to handle a much smaller program and therefore might not be reliable. Fact: Since officials can’t get good numbers and stats out of the program, they’re trying to get another IT system ... but don’t know when they’ll get it. Fact: At some clinics there just isn’t enough staff to make home visits for the assessment. Directors see

SALOME’S STARS

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Caution dominates the Sheep’s monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could reemerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new career-changing phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer.

Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. This makes you excel at getting things done the right way.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

D&H

by Matilda Charles

ENTERPRISE, Inc.

Do You Live Alone? Nearly 30 percent of seniors live alone. Home safety is very important to us, and even more important during the short, dark days of winter. Here are a few hints to stay safe. • Invest in a few of those small “tap” lights -- the kind you touch on top to turn on -- and put them along your path to various rooms, especially if you have to cross a room in the dark before reaching a lamp. • Turn on a light when you reach for your weekly pill container to be sure you don’t grab the wrong day’s pills. • Use a ladder and stepstool only if someone else is around. Keep things you need on lower shelves.

• Guard against slipping. Beware of scatter rugs that slide easily on hard floors. If your shoes are worn enough that they’re slick on wood or vinyl flooring, it’s time to replace them. • Keep your door locked when you’re home alone, even if you live in a safe neighborhood. • If you’re on social media, be careful what you reveal online. Never say that you live alone. • Be aware in the kitchen. Be sure the stove and other appliances are off when you’re finished with them. Mop up spills. Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it. • One of the best ways to stay safe is to stay in touch with others. If it’s available, sign

up for daily caller service, likely through your senior center. Or make a deal with a neighbor that you’ll check in with each other every morning by phone. Sign up for Meals on Wheels or attend meals at a local senior center. For more hints, go online and search for “seniors living alone safety.” Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible.
