Pietrocarlo Receives Prestigious Award at The Boys and Girls Club of Eden
From time to time the Boys and Girls Club of Eden lauds former Board members with the title of "Emeritus.” Previous recipients of this award were Jay Braymiller, Patrick M Howard, Robert Liljequist, Yvette O'Brien and Rodney Pierce. The emeritus title originates from the Latin emereri (meaning: earn one's discharge by service) and is often used in distinguished academic fields. In bestowing this title, we acknowledge and respect the two parts of the concept: 1) honor for service 2) continuation of belonging The inspiration for this status is reflected in the inaugural class – each member has been both visionary in his leadership and dedicated in his service. In granting this new status, we confirm that, although they may not be with us on a regular basis, their exemplary service merits that they always be an esteemed part of our organization. This year's receipient for the prestigious Emeritus Award will go to Robert Pietrocarlo. Mr. Pietrocarlo will be recognized on November 15th, at the Club's annual Bash for Cash. The community is welcome to attend. We honor all of his years of service since the Club was first opened in the fall of 2002 where he was there every step of the way with his buddies encouraging them to move forward and get the job done! Time and time again Mr. Pietrocarlo sets the tone by helping us run many of the Club's successful events by his positive attitude and due diligence. We appreciate his unfailing attention to detail. With all the last minute preparation that is needed sometimes, we know we can always count on him. In addition to his duties and responsibilities as serving on the Board of Directors for the Club, Mr. Pietrocarlo (Bob) also is a member of the Facilities Committee, which is responsible for any maintenance and upkeep of the Club. He also volunteers his time and service running the Chicken Barbeque, annual Golf Tournament, Corn Festival parking, and Bash for Cash, just to name a few. His wife, Kim Pietrocarlo, is right along side him, as well, serving the community as they both truly believe in the cause and passion for the kids! Having two children of their own, Quinn & Cole, it is important to Bob & Kim to inspire and enable all youth members of the Club to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens through active participation in positive youth development activities during their leisure time. The Club is very fortunate to have all of the time and talent that was donated by Mr. Pietrocarlo and the sacrifices made by his family with time spent away from them while he has served on the board since its inception. On behalf of the Boys and Girls Club of Eden, the Board of Directors and staff at the Club express heartfelt thanks for all you and your family have done. __________

Abt To Highlight Local History at Eden Library “Crown Hill” Presentation
Author and Eden resident, Christina Abt, will discuss her book, “Crown Hill, A Novel of Love, Life and The Afterlife,” at the Eden Library 2901 E. Church St. on Wednesday, October 29th at 6:30 pm... Following her presentation, Abt will sign books with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the library. Abt, who spent seven years researching, compiling and writing Crown Hill, acknowledged the significance of the Eden Library presentation. “Crown Hill is based on true life events that took place at my house over the last 150 years,” Abt said. “So to share the Crown Hill story in my hometown is exciting for me and hopefully interesting for those who live in Eden.” Further information and a video trailer for Crown Hill are available at http://christinaabt.com/ __________

In January, Andy’s wife, Amy, passed away; they had been married for 13 years. Andy has 3 children, Jenna age 12, A.J. age 11, and Sammy age 8. Both A.J. and Sammy are autistic, A.J. is non verbal. In June, Andy was diagnosed with cancer of the blood (Aplastic Anemia with Thrombocytopenia) for the second time. This cancer is similar to Leukemia; it destroys bone marrow leaving the body unable to produce new blood while destroying existing blood cells and platelets. Andy has been unable to work since June, and medical and living expenses have mounted. A little of your help will go a long way to help an awesome friend and his family. ATTENTION BRANT & FARNHAM VOTERS THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
This year’s Senate race 60th District is the most important election in our area for over the last 50 years. In the short time that Senator Mark Grisanti has been our senator, he has brought over $250,000 to the Brant & Farnham communities and millions more in his district. While Mark has been in office over the past 4 years, he has been readily available, and our area has never experienced the benefits that have been bestowed upon us. Senator Mark Grisanti worked to get Route 249 & Route 5 paved. He has given our small community hope and the promise of continuing to help us keep taxes down, while enhancing our community with many benefits. By voting for Senator Mark Grisanti, we will retain the most influential senator that our area has ever experienced. Go out and vote on November 4th for Independent candidate Senator Mark Grisanti, and keep the light shining upon us. Please don’t send us back into the dark ages.

COUCH THEATER DVD PREVIEWS By Sam Struckhoff
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Maleficent” (PG) -- The evil witch from “Sleeping Beauty” gets her chance to set the story straight. In this addendum to the popular fairy tale, the sinister sorceress (Angelina Jolie) has a softer side; she originally was a happy little fairy girl with powerful eagle wings and a family of benign supernatural creatures in her magical forest kingdom. Betrayal from the neighboring human kingdom changes Maleficent, making her into the menacing matriarch we know from the old story. Jolie inhabits her title role, making the scorned fairy queen creepy and beautiful. She just looks like somebody who would fly you into the air and drop you into a ravine if you don’t mind your manners. What’s missing is a compelling script to take this Angelina Jolie in “Maleficent” story to another level, where the characters have as much emotional depth as visual and death wails. SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of choices could make it difficult to select what is best for your needs. Avoid snap judgments. Take the time to check them all out to find the one that really meets your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You could once again experience pressure from others who would like to see you move in another direction. But heed your Bovine instincts to stay on your own path. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking charge of a project that seems to be about to stall or collapse altogether could be a challenge. But once everyone knows what you expect of him or her, things should go smoothly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid the pressures of the upcoming holiday period by setting a time right now to discuss how to divide up the responsibility of helping a loved one come through a difficult period. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s not too early for all you Leonas and Leos to start making long-distance travel plans. The sooner you stop procrastinating and start
deciding where, when and how you’re going, the better. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you’ve known for years might disappoint you, or even make you feel you’ve been betrayed. But check the facts carefully before you make charges that could backfire on you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A holiday plan might need to be revised to accommodate an unexpected complication. Come up with an alternative arrangement as soon as possible to avoid more problems down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t accept halfway explanations for a situation that requires full disclosure. The more you know now, the better able you will be to handle any
complications that might arise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The cooperation you relied upon might not be easy to get. Maybe there’s an information gap. See if everyone understands the situation. If not, be sure to offer a full explanation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Problems caused by that recent workplace distraction should soon be easing, allowing you to resume working at a less frantic pace. That personal matter also begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing your mind about a job decision isn’t easy for the usually committed Aquarian. But once you check it out, you’ll find facts you didn’t know before. And facts don’t lie. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your unique way of sizing up a situation gives you an edge in resolving that upsetting workplace problem. Stay on your current course regardless of any attempts to distract you.

VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves
Telehealth Care For the fiscal year 2014, which ended in September, the Department of Veterans Affairs took care of 690,000 veterans via 2 million Telehealth visits. That equals 12 percent of all veterans enrolled in VA health care. More than half of veterans with Telehealth care live in rural areas, making it hard to get to clinics and hospitals, and not all physical locations can take care of all medical specialties. Granted, not every medical concern can be addressed via Telehealth, but there are more than 40 health specialties that can. Rehab, mental health, cardiology, neurology, occupational therapy and primary care are but a few. Surgical specialists also can be hooked in for consultations when required, both before and after surgery.
Telehealth works in two ways. With Asynchronous Telehealth, information such as medical images and voice recordings is stored in advance, then sent to the doctor for assessment. For veterans with diabetes, PTSD or heart failure, it’s simple enough that vital signs can be sent via a telephone line. There even are digital stethoscopes and scales to help with weight-loss programs. A care coordinator keeps track of the information and works with the doctor to arrange any treatment changes or appointments. With Synchronous Video Telehealth, both the doctor and the veteran are hooked up with a real-time video communication link for checkups, diagnoses and more. The doctor also can review previously uploaded
data and order prescription changes on the spot. Besides the benefit of receiving care while at home, the VA even pays for the equipment. If you’re interested in Telehealth and a possible hookup at your home, call the Office of Telehealth Services at 202-461-6946. Online, go to www.telehealth.va.gov and read more about each type of service. On the left side of the screen, also scroll down to Newsletters. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. (c) 2014 King Synd., Inc.
