SCENe Holds Community Discussion

We are residents who are concerned about the lack of information and opportunities for “aging in place” in our rural community. Eden residents Donna Sundell, who is a member of the Erie County Senior Services Advisory Board, Joan Staby, a member of the Boys & Girls Club Board, Friends of Eden Library, and Peggy Habermehl, who is a member of the Eden Seniors and North Collins Food Pantry, are spearheading the efforts of meeting the needs of Eden seniors. We need your ideas and invite you to join our growing group. Ginny Krebs, Coordinator of the Springville Concord Elder Network (SCENe) is sharing the path that led to SCENe’s success in bringing senior opportunities to her community. SCENe, which was started in 2006 by three elders who wanted to age in their own homes, today is a program of Healthy Community Alliance, Inc. SCENe is a grassroots, volunteer-based organization that offered information, referral services and 85 activities to more than 2000 participants in 2013. Presenter Ginny Krebs, Coordinator of SCENe will be conducting a community discussion on Wed. Nov 12, 2pm4pm at the Eden Library, touching on important topics such as recreational opportunities or educational seminars, and knowing who to call for help or information on elder issues like dementia, chronic disease management, housing assistance, fraud, safety, transportation, or emergency preparedness. __________

Southtowns Catholic School Studies Longhouses

Miss Annmarie Busha's Grade 4 class is studying Native American cultures in Social Studies. The kids had to research all the different kinds of longhouses and then pick one. The project included a short paper, building a longhouse and presenting the final to the class. Each longhouse had to show food, animals, water, fire and a view if the inside. 1. Bones or antlers. Not only can these become foreign bodies in the stomach or intestines, but they can also break teeth or puncture the gums. Cooked bones can splinter, and if swallowed, can puncture the esophagus, stomach or intestines. 2. Fatty or rich foods. Gravy, turkey drippings, and stuffing can cause Pancreatitis, which can cause pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and in rare cases, even death. 3. Sugar-free candy, gum or desserts. Xylitol, a main ingredient in sugar-free goodies is toxic to dogs. 4. Chocolate. It affects multiple organs and can make your pet very sick. 5. Human medications. Hosting Dinner can be stressful, and may require some over the counter pain relief. Keep these away from your pet, as these can harm them. Just one Tylenol has the potential to kill your cat. 6. Guests. Some guests, especially children, do not realize that sharing with your pets can harm them. It can also be stressful or you pet to have so many unknown faces around them. If your pet seems uncomfortable, it is often best to remove them from the festivities, and isolate them in a quiet, separate area in the house, or a kennel, where they can relax. What can we give our pets as a treat for the holiday?

TOYS & TREATS for FIDO & FLUFFY

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect on everything we have, but it can also pose some serious dangers to our pets. It is very important to take the extra precautions to make sure our furry friends stay healthy and safe.

1.

Alex says...

when the weather gets colder, Snoop Dogg and Bear always wear their sweaters!

A small portion of carrots, broccoli, or green beans is a nice treat, and can be given safely. 2. Low sodium chicken broth can be added to their dry kibble as a little snack. 3. A spoonful of peanut butter, stuffed in a kong or chew toy will keep them busy while everyone is eating. This will prevent guests from being tempted to share their meal with your pets. 4. Keep garbage cans covered or out of reach. This will prevent your furry friends from becoming tempted to helping themselves to the scraps. Clear dishes as soon as possible for the same reason. Golden Paws Sponsors Farm Days

The 1st Saturday of every month, Golden Paws Pet Care Services sponsors and hosts an educational kids clinic called "Farm Days." At the clinic, kids get to experience a unique hands-on interaction with horses, dogs, cats, and rabbits! Guests learn about the animals, how to care for them, work with them properly, and how animals and people can communicate with one another. Each child participates in making an animal-related craft. There are fun games provided, such as bobbing for apples, pin the tail on the donkey, and musical hay bales (a country re-take on "musical chairs.") October's child attendants were: Sophia Westfall, Kendall Kaufman, Camden Kaufman, Kyler Kaufman, and Autumn Welsh. The animals worked with are: Lily (miniature horse), Violet (miniature horse, Lily's foal), Eclipse (a rescued horse), Hector (a rescued rabbit), Willow & Harper (rescued cats), and Skye (a rescued dog.) All animals are a part of the Kurek family. The cost is $10 per child (ages 6 - 12) and runs from 10am to 12pm. Proceeds from the clinic go to the farm rescue animals' needs. To register to attend, or for more information, please call 716-400-8431.

times greater than that required to drive a train of cars at the same speed; hence as a means of rapid transit, flying could not begin to compete with the railroad.” The magazine can be forgiven its lack of foresight, though, considering the fact that the first powered airplane flight didn’t even occur until five years later.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH by Keith Roach, M.D.

“White-Coat Syndrome or High Blood Pressure DEAR DR. ROACH: My 21-year-old son is a college athlete, a sprinter, but he has had recurrent high systolic blood pressure readings since he was a senior in high school. He’s generally easygoing and not stressed. Doctors always attribute the elevated results to “white-coat syndrome,” since he is otherwise in excellent health and doesn’t drink, smoke or use drugs. The last reading was 142/78, when he checked it at a drugstore monitor. He’s never had any reason to be nervous in a doctor’s office, and the initial high reading was with the same pediatrician he’d been seeing all his life. Once, a nurse had him rest quietly for a few minutes and rechecked the reading; it was lower, but still high. He just finished four months of rigorous basic training with the Army with no problems (his high reading on his physical was put down to nervousness), and he may now be anxious no matter where or when the reading is taken, but I’m worried that something else may be going on. Is there something we should have checked? -- K.C. ANSWER: The real question is whether your son has “white coat” hypertension, or just hypertension. The best way of answering this is with a 24-hour bloodpressure monitor, which checks the blood pressure every 15-30 minutes while awake, and less frequently at night. If those readings are mostly in the normal range, we could conclude that he has reactive, or white-coat, hypertension. However, it is possible that

he has hypertension. Healthy young people sometimes get hypertension, and he may be able to get his blood pressure down without medication, through salt reduction and relaxation techniques. But if he needs them, there are medications that will not affect his athletic abilities. I sometimes order an echocardiogram to look for changes in the heart that go along with high blood pressure. However, the elevated blood pressure readings are only of a few years’ duration, so he might not have these yet. I think the 24-hour BP monitor is the way to go. High blood pressure is one of the most common ailments for the general population. The booklet on it describes what it does and how it’s treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with

the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there much difference between D.O. degrees and doctor of medicine degrees? I just noticed that my PCP has a “D.O.” after his name, and nothing else. -- B.B. ANSWER: A D.O. is a doctor of osteopathy, someone who went to an osteopathic medical school. D.O. physicians are licensed to practice medicine and surgery in all U.S. states; in Canada, licensing varies by province. The training of an osteopathic physician is similar to that of a doctor with the M.D. degree, but osteopathic physicians obtain training in osteopathic manipulative medicine. It has been my experience that D.O. physicians are very similar to M.D. physicians, in most respects.

COUCH THEATER DVD PREVIEWS By Sam Struckhoff

PICKS OF THE WEEK “If I Stay” (PG-13) -- Mia (Chloe Grace-Moretz) is a teenage girl with a talent for cello, nice parents, a rock ‘n’ roll boyfriend and a good chance of getting into Juilliard. While in the car with her loving family, they get into a horrible accident, and Mia’s body is rushed into surgery while her spirit looks on. Stuck between life and death, Mia has a decision to make. It sounds like it should be obvious, but she manages to stretch out the decision for the full run time. Actually, any of those things from the first sentence of this review could be enough to say “yes” to life. Really. Most people lean toward staying alive -- just as a general rule -- if given the option. Do you sense what kind of melodrama we’re dealing with? To nobody’s surprise, the film is based on a bestselling novel for the young-adult market.

“And So It Goes” (PG-13) -- In a sun-dappled Connecticut neighborhood, a grumpy old coot gets VEHICLES WANTED saddled with a precocious child who softens his imCASH FOR JUNK Vehicles age just enough to help him and Scrap Metal. Call Rob, find new love. It is as boring 998-3603. DMV#7109787. and unoriginal as it sounds. Oren (Michael Douglas) $$$WANTED DEAD OR is a realtor with no people ALIVE! Your junk vehicle and skills and a raging case of scrap metal. K & R SALVAGE, the grouchies. His no-good son drops by to give over a 337-3109. 9-year-old grandchild before he heads to jail. Diane Keaton plays a well-intenEDEN-NORTH tioned neighbor whose jokes never land. COLLINS Oren has to learn not to be PENNYSAVER such a cranky old fart, but by that point, you’re not inHOURS: vested enough to care. Rob Reiner has a great track record of movies that are both funny and uplifting, but this one didn’t go that way.

Mon. - Thurs.9-5 Friday 9 to Noon

Channing Tatum in “22 Jump Street” “22 Jump Street” (R) -This is a sequel that truly builds on the success of its predecessor without recycling every single joke! In the last movie, “21 Jump Street,” Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill were two cops tasked with infiltrating a local high school to bust up a drug ring. Putting two overgrown adolescents into an environment full of real adolescents turned out to be a great move, plus Tatum and Hill have an easy, funny and admirable take on adult male friendships (called “bromances” in the contemporary vernacular). This sequel sends the duo after a college-based crime ring, stepping up the humor and the action.

“The Wind Rises” (PG-13) -- Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki has an illustrious career that includes some of the world’s most-praised animated features. This movie has been called his farewell picture, and it’s a fitting image. The animated feature takes you into the mind of Jiro Hirokoshi, an airplane engineer with a sincere love of flight and the intangible beauty of mathematics. Unfortunately, Jiro’s masterwork designs were used by the Imperial Japanese military during World War II. Don’t let the cooked-up controversy keep you from seeing this gorgeous, heartfelt film.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

• On Nov. 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivers what will become one of the most famous speeches in American history at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Using just 272 words, Lincoln articulated the meaning of the Civil War for a public that had grown weary of the conflict. • On Nov. 23, 1876, William Marcy “Boss” Tweed, leader of New York City’s corrupt Tammany Hall political organization, is delivered to authorities in New York City after his capture in Spain. He had formed the “Tweed Ring,” which bought votes, encouraged judicial corruption and extracted millions of dollars from city contracts. • On Nov. 18, 1883, American and Canadian railroads begin

using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times. It was not until 1918 that Congress adopted the railroad time zones. • On Nov. 22, 1916, Jack London, who chronicled the last Wild West frontier of Alaska, dies in California. London only spent a brief time in the Klondike, but returned with a trove of tales. He produced over 50 volumes of short stories and novels, including “The Call of the Wild,” about a domestic dog who joins an Alaskan wolf pack. • On Nov. 20, 1947, Princess Elizabeth marries her distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten, former prince of Greece and Denmark who renounced his titles to marry the English princess. Mountbatten was made the duke of Edinburgh. • On Nov. 17, 1972, socialite Barbara Baekeland is stabbed to death by her son, Antony, in London. When police arrived,

Antony was calmly placing a telephone order for Chinese food. Antony was institutionalized until a bureaucratic mistake resulted in his release in 1980. He then moved to New York City, where he stabbed his grandmother. • On Nov. 21, 1986, National

Security Council staff member Oliver North and his secretary, Fawn Hall, begin shredding documents that would have exposed their participation in a range of illegal activities. North was fired, but Hall continued to sneak documents to him by stuffing them in her skirt and boots.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A long-sought workplace change could be happening soon. Consider reworking your ideas and preparing a presentation just in case. A personal relationship takes a new turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your persuasiveness doesn’t really start to kick in until midweek. By then, you can count on having more supporters in your camp, including some you doubted would ever join you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your workload is still high, but -- good news! -- you should start to see daylight by the week’s end. Reserve the weekend for fun and games with friends and loved ones. You deserve it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Regardless of how frustrating things are, keep that “Crab” under control. A cutting comment you might think is apt right now will leave others hurting for a long time to come. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be more sensitive to the emotions of loved ones who might feel left out while you’re stalking

that new opportunity. Be sure to make it up to them this weekend. A nice surprise could be waiting. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The gregarious Virgo rarely has a problem making new friends. But repairing frayed relationships doesn’t come easily. Still, if it’s what you want to do, you’ll find a way. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A misunderstanding with a partner or spouse needs to be worked out before it turns into something really nasty.

Forget about your pride for now and make that first healing move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Communication dominates the week. Work out any misunderstandings with coworkers. Also get back in touch with old friends and those family members you rarely see. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) As busy as your week is, make time for someone who feels shut out of your life. Your act of kindness could later prove to be more significant than you might have

realized. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Congratulations. Your busy workweek leads to some very satisfying results. Sports and sporting events are high on your weekend activities aspect. Enjoy them with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your generosity of spirit reaches out once again to someone who needs reassurance. There might be problems, but keeping that line of communication open eventually pays off. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You are among the truthseekers in the universe, so don’t be surprised to find yourself caught up in a new pursuit of facts to counter what you believe is an insidious exercise in lying. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in loyalty and in keeping secrets. All things considered, you would probably make a perfect secret agent.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS WANTED IMMEDIATELY NORTH COLLINS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

8 Ways to Save on a Low Income Trying to save on a limited income can be tough, but it’s not impossible. What’s required is the determination to succeed at saving. Here are some ideas for getting started. • Make holiday gift giving for the kids only this year. Let the adults in your circle of family and friends know that you’ll be limiting the gifts you buy. Chances are they will be relieved. • Stick to your list at the grocery store. No extras, even if you find a bargain. There will be new bargains next week. • Use your tax refund next year to buy savings bonds, up to a limit of $5,000 per year. The Series I bonds can be purchased with some or all of your refund. You’ll need to file a Form 8888, Allocation of Refund (Including Bond Purchases). This needs to be done in $50 increments. Years down the road when you cash in your bonds, you’ll need to pay taxes on the interest. The term of ownership is a minimum of one year, so be sure your emergency fund is in place before you commit all of your refund. If you redeem the bonds before five years, you forfeit the three most recent months of interest. The benefit of having money tucked away in savings bonds is that you can’t access it on a whim. • Ask for reductions in

costs for cable, auto insurance and other payments. Chances are they’d rather work with you than lose you as a customer. Put the extra money into savings. • Buy second-hand where you can. Careful shopping can get you nearly new clothing and small appliances at Salvation Army or Goodwill stores. Put the extra money into savings. • Consider taking a temporary part-time job. Retail (especially during the holiday season) is a good place to start. • Don’t let yourself get hungry. Sounds odd, but the truth is that if you’re away from home, you’re more likely to cave in and venture into a restaurant. The same goes for grocery shopping: Eat before you go to keep from succumbing to the temptations on every aisle. • If you have extra room in your house, consider using AirBnB as a way to rent out space to visitors for a few days. Price your space lower than local hotels and save the money. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply3@gmail.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Qualifications: NYS Teaching Certification Preferred Submit letter of interest, resume, and proof of certification to: Joan D. Thomas, Superintendent, 2045 School St., P.O. Box #740, North Collins, NY 14111. Applications accepted continuously. EOE
