Richard E. Smith “Smokey”

Richard E. Smith “Smokey” of East Eden, NY passed away on November 2, 2014 at the age of 76 Years. Loving Husband for 44 Years to his wife Lorrena (Gates) Smith. Beloved father to his beloved dog Becky. Brother-in-law of George (Janet) Gates, Mary Lou Kozak, Lucille Krencik, Chips (Marland) Schmitt and the late Eugene Gates. Uncle to several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Richard rode motorcycle on “The wall of death” for Strates Shows. He retired as an electrician for the State at

Edward C. Forster

Edward C. Forster of Ft. Myers, Florida, and formerly of Eden, NY, died October 5th at the age of 84 in Ft. Myers, FL after a short illness following the death of

his dear companion, Carolyn Clark. He was born Jan 13, 1930 in Buffalo, son of Jacob and Hedwig Forster. Ed was a 1947 graduate of Eden schools. He served his country from 1951 to 1954 as a Radioman in the United States Navy aboard the destroyer USS Abbott (DD629). After his service, Ed worked for New York Telephone for 30 years. Ed married his loving wife, the late Claire (nee: Bowman) in 1956. He is survived by son Mike (Laura) Forster, daughter Deb Clark (Rick Clark), grandchildren Rachel, Nathan, and Kayla, great grandson Jakob, and step-grandchildren Christine and Emily. A memorial service is planned for 10:30am Friday, November 28th at St. John Paul II Church in Lakeview, NY, with burial in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Eden. . Flowers gratefully declined. Marjorie S. Rubeck Edwards (nee May), age 87, of Hamburg, NY; formerly of Eden, NY, died Saturday, November 8, 2014.She was born December 16, 1926 in Hamburg, New York. The daughter of late John and Sylvia (Schunk) May. She was the wife of late Warren P. Rubeck and William Edwards; the beloved mother of Sandra (John) Fleissner, Bonnie Wronski and late Roger (Linda) Rubeck; step mother of Bill Edwards’s children. Sister of Beatrice Young, Janice Taber and late Althea, Donald and Carol Jean. Grandmother of 3 grand-

daughters, Jacquelyn McClendon, Kimberly Smith Sharlene Mellon and 5 great grandchildren; Hilary, Michael, Doc, Ethan and Ian. Marjorie was a member of the Eden United Methodist Church and currently the Hamburg Methodist Church. She resided in Eden for 49 years. She was a member of the American Legion Post #880 in Eden. She was a homemaker and wife for more than 50 years. She made fresh evergreen wreaths for 43 years, which many enjoyed her handiwork during the holidays. Marjorie worked with herhusband Warren Rubeck and William Edwards designing and building unique creations for her daughter Sandra and John’s Floral School, Sign of the Pine. Marjorie worked on the Annual Election Day Dinner at the Eden Methodist Church and the Annual Rummage Sale. She also worked at the Eden Corn Festival. She raised three successful children. Sandra, with her husband John, ran a floral school for 40 years; Bonnie has worked in the dental

Southtowns Catholic School Makes Ofrendas

Students in Mrs. Ann Coopers Grade 6 Spanish class made ofrendas. The project had to include the altar, pictures, things that the person liked, candied skulls, tissue paper and candy. When they were done, they had to present their alter and the essay that they wrote on the person. An ofrenda is a collection of objects placed on a ritual altar during the annual and traditionally Mexican Dia de los Muertos celebration. In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome -- funding the project. Where would the money come from, he wondered. He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city's poorest individuals on Christmas Day. As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called "Simpson's Pot" into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor. The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, "Keep the Pot Boiling." He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas. Six years later, the kettle idea spread from the west coast to the Boston area. That year, the combined effort nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy. In 1901, kettle contributions in New York City provided funds for the first mammoth sit-down dinner in Madison Square Garden, a custom that continued for many years. Today in the U.S., The Salvation Army assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods. Captain McFee's kettle idea launched a tradition that has spread not only throughout the United States, but all across the world. Kettles are now used in such distant lands as Korea, Japan, Chile and many European countries. Everywhere, public contributions to Salvation Army kettles enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten. Look for the Salvation Army Bell-Ringers around town on December 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th.

The Barrel Racers of WNY

held their annual end of season awards banquet on Saturday November 8th. Over 100 attendees participated in a basket raffle, 50/50 drawing, saddle and tack set giveaway and most importantly came to see their fellow riders awarded for their hard work and dedication for the sport of barrel racing. Although Mother Nature was not on our side this season, raining 12 out of our 16 Tuesday night runs, we still had a great time with our friends, family, and four legged friends!
