to the Farnham Vol. Fire Dept. who, despite the winter storm on Nov. 20th, still responded very quickly to help safely rescue all of the horses trapped in our barn collapse. Thank you to all who helped clear the additional snow on the roofs and driveway. Also, thank you to those of you who called or stopped by to offer help. We were greatly overwhelmed by the amount of people that we knew and didn’t know offering their support.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Equalizer” (R) -- A quiet, peaceful man in his overthe-hill years harbors a dark past that will come out when he goes on a killing spree to save a young woman. It’s a plot you’ve heard a billion times, but now it’s Denzel Washington’s turn. Robert McCall (Washington) works at the hardware store, dines alone and reads classic novels that your high-school English teacher would approve of. McCall notices that a regular, Teri (Chloe Grace-Moretz), is being abused by the Russian mobsters who have her. McCall goes on a super-violent Righteous Revenge Rampage using skills he learned when he was a special-forces guy (of course.) Director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day” and “Shooter”) takes his time, but really dials up the smash-and-shoot once things get going. McCall mostly works with guns and fists, but barbed wire and broken glass also get involved. However you feel about the red stuff, the movie has more thrills than other recent movies with this exact plot.
Shirley MacLaine in “Elsa & Fred”
demeanor. They both have a lot left ahead of them. While it treads a well-worn path, the leads bring a considerable amount of charm to the proceedings. MacLaine’s frenetic enthusiasm for life and lying could be a little grating without Plummer’s precisely “Elsa & Fred” (PG-13) -- calibrated curmudgeon. Christopher Plummer plays Fred, a widower just going DOGS OF THE WEEK through the motions until the “Last Weekend” (NR) -- This clock runs out. His morose melodrama -- I think parts are attitude is understandable, as supposed to be funny -- cenhe’s been deposited in a small ters on a upper-class Califorapartment by his daughter nia family as they bicker in and her husband, both seek- their Lake Tahoe vacation ing a favor. Fred’s hope- home for the last time. Celess grouchiness begins to lia (Patricia Clarkson) is the melt in the presence of Elsa mother of a handful of adult (Shirley MacLaine). She’s a sons who arrive at the lake little older than him, but she house with their significant has dreams in her heart and others. Hopefully, the poor a relentlessly positive -- if product of this film will end somewhat bubble-headed -- the trend of dramedies where
adult families are put into the emotional pressure-cooker of a nostalgic setting. “Reach Me” (PG-13) -- This time of year is fantastic for delivering these bafflingly bad films as studios try to sweep them under the rug between holiday and award seasons. This one has a big cast with big names all turning in overwrought or confusing performances. There’s a script that seemingly dares you to care about it or keep track of it. Teddy (Tom Berenger) wrote a self-help book that touches the lives of various misfits, creeps and directionless loners. Sylvester Stallone, Nelly, Kyra Sedgwick, Danny Aiello, Kevin Connolly, Kelsey Grammer, Terry Crews (and many more!) all got a paycheck for this cluster-mess.

Coumadin VS. Pradaxa
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was put on Coumadin several years ago for atrial fibrillation. It was a perpetual pain in the butt, all those tests and never knowing from day to day how much the blood had been changed from meal to meal. Both extremes were dangerous. I had two friends on Coumadin who were in remote areas when they fell, both hitting their head. Both died from brain hemorrhage before they could be treated at a hospital. My doctor suggested Pradaxa, a more expensive product, but no testing required. From what I read, there is no more danger of internal bleeding from one than from the other, and apparently Coumadin can be reversed medically in an emergency room while Pradaxa cannot (true or false?). It would be helpful for you to explain the chemical/medical differences between the two drugs; how they work and why they work differently; and an opinion as to which is the safer to use, and why. -- C.L.
ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation, the chaotic beating of the upper part of the heart, puts people at higher risk for blood clots, and is one of the most common reasons to prescribe warfarin (Coumadin). Warfarin really did start off as rat poison, but, like many drugs, it’s useful as a medicine in small doses even if it is potentially deadly in high doses. It has been in use for 60 years. Unfortunately, it is ineffective if you don’t give enough and can cause serious bleeding if too much is given, as happened to your friends. The
INR blood test (international normalized ratio) is used to determine the correct dose, and the usual desired range is 2-3, although people with mechanical heart valves need a slightly higher dose, 2.5-3.5. Blood testing needs to be done at least every few weeks, and much more often when just starting and in people whose levels go up and down. Since warfarin works by blocking vitamin K, people on warfarin need to have a consistent vitamin K intake, which is mostly found in green, leafy vegetables. Vitamin K will reverse the effects of warfarin in half a day or so, but blood products can be used to immediately reverse the effect. Dabigatran (Pradaxa) is a new medication that works by directly blocking thrombin, a key protein in making clots. Dabigatran should not be given to people with poor kidney function or disease of heart valves. There is no way to reverse its effects. Studies comparing warfarin and dabigatran have shown similar rates of effectiveness and a slightly lower risk of brain hemorrhage with dabigatran. Some studies show a slightly higher risk of heart attack in people taking dabi-
gatran. In my opinion, both are reasonable choices. Pradaxa may be more convenient since it doesn’t require testing and appears to be about as effective, and with a lower risk of brain hemorrhage. However, there is no antidote, and it needs to be taken twice daily. READERS: Atrial fibrillation affects some 2 million Americans. To learn more, order the booklet Heartbeat Irregularities by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. On Christmas Eve, Itsy can’t wait to see everyone. In the meantime, he has lots of cooking to do… but he forgot the sausage! Itsy bundles up and runs to Lakeside Market. Thank goodness they’re open on Christmas Eve.
Suddenly, Itsy sees a bunch of people waiting in line outside Most Precious Blood Church Hall. Itsy asks, “What’s going on here?” The people tell him they are waiting for a Christmas meal because they are alone on Christmas and have no place to celebrate. This makes Itsy very sad, but he knows how he can help!

surprised to learn that Peller wasn’t an actress; she was a manicurist. A commercial producer named Joe Sedelmaier was shooting a different ad when he realized they needed a manicurist on site, so an assistant ran to a local beauty shop and returned with Peller. As soon as she greeted Sedelmaier with a gruff “How ya doin’?”, the producer realized that she had potential. He convinced Wendy’s to create an entire campaign around the octogenarian. The gamble paid off; the restaurant’s sales jumped by 15 percent almost as soon as the ads began to run.

2015 Credit Predictions
What will the new year bring us financially? Here are some educated guesses and predictions: CardHub (www.cardhub. com) assembled the opinions of financial experts ... who don’t agree on all points. Credit-card interest rates likely won’t go up, credit will be more available because of low rates, and consumers are likely to spend more in the next years (to the tune of $60 billion in credit-card debt) because we haven’t learned anything from the past few years. Overdraft protection might be harder to get, and your credit worthiness will be checked before banks offer that service on your accounts. The reader machines for “chipped” credit cards will show up in more places, especially since new rules (starting next October) will force merchants to pay for any fraud if they haven’t installed new machines. If you have an opportunity to swap
an existing card for one with a chip, take it. Data breaches will continue. U.S. News (money.usnews. com) consulted experts who see more access to credit in 2015, especially for those who haven’t qualified in recent years, for two main reasons: Banks are a bit more relaxed with approvals now, and bad credit is scrolling off the credit reports of consumers who got in financial trouble before. We’ll see more offers of balance transfers at zero percent interest for a year or year and a half. Again, credit-card companies are more relaxed about extending credit now. More credit-card companies will provide FICO scores on your monthly statements. Without consensus from experts on how 2015 will go financially, your best bet is, as always, to keep your head down. Don’t charge what you can’t pay for within three months. Look at statements when they first come
in for any signs of fraud or compromise. Save, save, save. Try to get one more year out of your vehicle before buying another one. Keep good security on your home computers, and stay on top of news about viruses and how they might present themselves in email or on websites. If you can qualify for a zero-percent interest balance transfer credit card, use it to pay off any other credit card that charges interest. (Don’t close that other account -- just don’t use it.) But mostly, don’t give in to the feeling that it’s safe to start spending extravagantly. It’s not. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply3@gmail.com. SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for this New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den-mate offers both wise and loving support.
have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your selfconfidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year.
