On Friday, December 5th, the Eden Stampede 4-H club and our leader Liz Wierzba, went to The Wreath Barn on Keller Road in East Eden, owned by Michelle Haag and Danielle Gabel. For many equestrians, horses are not their only four-legged friend, and a barn dog is not usually very far away. With the weather turning colder, you may be leaving your dog home more often when you go to the barn or even shortening your walks for fear that your pup is cold. While it’s true that time spent outdoors may be limited in low temperatures, you can take some key steps to help your dog stay warm and happy so he can continue to enjoy time with you on walks and at the barn this winter. If your dog spends time waiting for you at the barn, make sure he has a bedded area that is appropriate for colder temperatures. Providing a spot where your dog to lay down that is away from the wind, snow and rain will remove elements that would make it harder than necessary for him to stay warm. An unused stall or corner of your tack room can be great locations to set up a home base for your dog at the barn. Once you’ve found an appropriate location, give him a warm fleece blanket to lie on- a horse cooler can be the perfect thing to use! Your dog’s coat plays a role in keeping him warm by insulating him. If your dog’s coat is trimmed or if he has short hair, a well insulated dog blanket can help to keep him comfortable in the cold. Similarly, if your dog is older and has a harder time keeping himself warm, a blanket can help. Giving your dog some help in the form of shelter to block wind, coolers to snuggle in and dog blankets to keep warm and dry will help maximize the time he can spend outside with you when the temperature drops this season. Even utilizing these tips, some days are just too cold for any length of time outside, so make sure you watch your dog for shivering and signs of trouble staying warm. Fall Sports Success Celebrated at Banquet

North Collins Central celebrated fall sports successes with a banquet and program on Nov. 24. Girls' Soccer Coach Tim Flanigan and Assistant Coach Robyn Turner reported not only on the team's success this year, but bright prospects for the future. The team was honored as a whole by the coaches of the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Athletic Association with the Sportsmanship Award. Senior netminder Aurora Klawinski was tapped as this year's MVP. Flanigan recounted one stop Klawinski made this season “with her face” as an example of her tenacity in goal. Five players, Kalla Jimerson, Emily Winter, Brianna Krawczyk, Morgan Lawton and Lilly Archulett, were given the Coach's Award. Senior Richelle Cyrek received the team's Sportsmanship Award and fellow 12th-grader Sam Gier was named Most Improved. Flanigan said his 21-player squad “was the biggest team I've ever had. They stepped up to the challenge. It was a good season.” The Boys' Soccer program also made a playoff run this season. Coach Jay Walters said he tried to establish his style this year on the competition the team would face. According to the coach, he “knew I had a good center but the addition of French foreign exchange student Gauthier Ferroullat let them be creative.” For his contribution, Ferrouillat was given the Coach's Award. David Lynch was not only named Team MVP but Walters reported had also been selected for the All-WNY Team. Walters presented the Eagle Award to Austin Winter and Most Improved Honors to Nicholas Herc. Girls' Volleyball coach David Burgstahler enjoyed his team's capture of its first Blue Patch in 27 years. Pointing to that section win against Panama, Burgstahler said, “We lost the first two games, and for those of you not familiar with volleyball, that would seem to be it for us. But the girls came back and won the next three. They learned that you never give up.” Burgstahler selected Jasmine Filkow as the team's MVP, also announcing that the junior had been selected to the Second Team in All-WNY honors. Filkov, along with her sister, Angela, also won spots on the CCAA All-Star First Team. Senior Arrika Bley was named to the league's second team. Senior Jenna Keppel was presented with the Coach's Award and freshman Courtney Wilson received the Most Improved title. The entire volleyball team and the majority of the other two teams also received Scholar Athlete pins reflecting their maintenance of honor or high-honor grades. The flags along Main Street and East Eden Rd. need to be replaced. Volunteers of Post 880 for the past 10 years have installed and taken down these flags. Financially, we maintain the flags, poles, brackets by replacing ones deemed unserviceable. They have reached their present state of Tribute, Memory and Love. They are faded, worn and tattered. 150 flags, poles and brackets need to be replaced. We are asking the businesses of Eden and East Eden, community organizations and residents to donate to this major project. The estimated cost for replacements is $50 per flag, pole (6 ft.) and bracket. To do a complete replacement, we would need 150 good quality sets. The cost would be $7500. A community effort to this project is neeeded in not only the purchasing of the sets, but installation of brackets. Donations can be sent to Eden American Legion Post 880, 2912 Legion Dr., Eden, NY 14057 Please mark flag donation. It would be nice to have this project completed before Memorial Day 2105. There are 2 new sets located at Main Street and Legion Drive.
