Dorothy M. Bentley

Dorothy M. Bentley, age 86, of Hamburg, New York died on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Cecilia Smith. She was born September 12, 1928 in Buffalo, New York. Dorothy will be remembered for having a love for life and scotch. She especially enjoyed entertaining and hosting elaborate dinner parties. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Eden, New York. Dorothy started her career as the manager of the Café Rouge for 15 years at the Hotel Statler in Buffalo, NY. She was transferred to Denver, Colorado where she met her future husband, Felix Bentley. They later married in England. Together their careers took them to many different countries, eventually retiring and settling in Australia. After the death of her husband in 2000, Dorothy moved back home to Hamburg, New York to be with family. She was the loving sister of Ronald E. (late Anita) Smith, Kenneth C. (Louise) Smith, late Quentin P. and Richard J. Smith and is survived by several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at Immaculate Conception Church of Eden on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 5:00PM immediately followed by a Funeral Mass at 6:00PM. All are invited to attend a dinner reception following the mass to celebrate the life of Dorothy. Flowers gratefully declined. Beloved husband of Betty (Commendator) Gabel; loving father of Lyndsay Gabel (Brandon Wiacek) and Vicky (Eric) Kraft and the boys Felix, Oscar, Big Foot and Spidy Boy; beloved boompa of Madyson; loving brother of the late Donald and Ronnie J. Gabel; grandson of the late Claude and Elizabeth Smith. Friends called Sunday and Monday at the Wentland Funeral Home, 10634 Main St., North Collins where funeral services were held Tuesday. Eden United Methodist Church Welcomes their new Pastor and his Wife

The congregation of the Eden United Methodist Church would like to introduce their new pastor and his wife to the Eden community. Pastor Alan Howe will be coming on as pastor to the Eden flock with his wife Louise. The congregation would like to extend our warmest thanks to Pastor Helen Hadley who is retiring and will be moving to the Canandaigua area to be closer to family. Pastor Helen has been with the EUMC for 6 years and the congregation wishes her all the best in her retirement.

Pastor Howe comes to us from the United Methodist Church in Rome, New York and has strong ties to this side of the state having graduated from Dunkirk High School and doing his undergraduate studies at SUNY Fredonia. His mother, also named Louise Howe, still lives in Dunkirk. He has a strong commitment to mission work that includes starting a Seminary called Nexus Seminary in Uganda in 2006. He has been working with this project for the past 21 years returning each year to help train pastors. Even before his formal placement at Eden the Howe’s have had extensive contact and more than a few meetings with many groups at the church. He sees helping the congregation to best serve its community, locally, regionally and globally, as being high on his list of goals. Pastor Alan has great plans as he begins his time in Eden “I envision a Church community that lives the grace of Jesus Christ and is known for loving and supporting the people of its community. I have a vision for worship in a couple of styles which will engage seekers, starters and returners.” He says as he begins planning for his time in Eden. Pastor Howe and Louise greatly enjoy the outdoors and are looking forward to taking advantage of all the opportunities this region offers. This will include long summer rides on their Harley and paddles in nearby lakes and rivers. We invite you to say hello to them as you pass them on the street, or see them shopping at the Kazoo Factory, Agle’s Market or Surfine. Welcome them if you see them having lunch at the Four Corners or wave to them as they head to out of town on West Church Street to Dunkirk to see Mom on the Harley. Better yet, come and say hello at a 10:00 Sunday morning summer service and join us at coffee hour following the service and share your thoughts and prayers with all of us at the Eden United Methodist Church at 2820 East Church Street. __________

The others (Billy Nighy, Judi Dench, Celia Imrie) paddle into their own romantic situations, all set to the beat of preparations for Sonny’s upcoming traditional Indian wedding. It’s sweet, predictable, easygoing and affectionately held together by the cluster of stars at the center. Instead of the surprising charm of the first, we get the warm familiarity of an OK sequel, which shouldn’t deter fans of the first. If you can sit through two good episodes of “Downton Abbey” without getting restless, then you can probably handle a stay at this hotel.

Bike Safety

With summer activities in full swing, Phil Tremblay (Officer) from the North Collins Village Police; Janice Catalano (Director of Operations) from the North Collins EMS; and Chris Pulinski (student intern) from Erie 2 Criminal Justice Program, collaborated on and presented a Bike Safety Program for students at the North Collins Elementary School on May 19, 2015. Demonstrations on how to properly fit a helmet as well as how to determine if a bike is the proper fit for the rider were given for each class. Students participated in discussions regarding general bike safety & “rules of the road”. A lucky student from each class took home the helmet used for demonstration. It was emphasized that all students need to wear a helmet when riding off their property, and if any don’t have a one, (and can’t get one), they should contact the Village Police Dept and/or North Collins EMS to see if assistance is available. A Limited number of helmets were made available at the North Collins EMS Open House held on May 17th. __________

Persistent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had surgery late last year on my right wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome. The numbness in my fingers has not changed. Now I’m faced with the same problem in my left hand. I’m going to forget surgery, seeing as it wasn’t successful in my right hand. I decided to go to an acupuncturist for laser treatments. I also had a cortisone shot. Neither of these has helped. Do you know of a solution for my problem? -- P.M. ANSWER: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression on the median nerve, as it runs down the arm through a “tunnel” of bone and connective tissue deep in the wrist. It may cause pain, numbness and weakness of the wrist and hand. The thumb and middle three fingers are most often affected. In advanced cases, the hand muscles may become atrophied. The sooner the pressure on the nerve is relieved, the more likely there will not be permanent nerve damage. It sounds to me like the first surgery was not done soon enough to prevent damage. If that’s the case, then surgery on your left hand, done sooner after the onset of symptoms, might prevent the long-term numbness present in your right hand. However, it’s possible that the diagnosis was wrong or that the surgery might not have been effective, even if done promptly. At least one study of needle acupuncture showed that it is as effective as a cortisone injection. This study exclud-

I have not found any evidence that laser treatment is effective. My advice is to first be sure of the diagnosis. An EMG test is a study of nerve function, which can confirm the diagnosis and may be able to predict how much damage there is and provide guidance on treatment. If damage is not too severe, other treatments such as splinting, medication, yoga or ultrasound may be helpful. If advanced, surgery done quickly still may be your best bet. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I just found out that I have lipedema, a rare disease. What can I do about it? My mom and dad don’t have it, nor other family. Should I try to find relatives who have it? I am told that it is an inherited disease. None of these “family” ever had it! -- L.Q. ANSWER: Lipedema is indeed a rare disease, although it may be underdiagnosed. It almost always is found in women, and is suspected when there is marked

fat deposition symmetrically between the waist and ankles. The areas affected often are tender or painful to the touch. It is not the same as lymphedema, fluid increase due to poorly functioning or damaged lymph vessels, although people with lipedema can develop lymphedema. Treatment includes compression garments or manual lymph drainage, often combined with surgical treatments such as liposuction. Only about 15 percent of people with lipedema have a family history. It’s not surprising that you can’t find relatives with it.
