Aeound the Farm
BoonARKM has now moved into its 16th year breeding high quality and productive Angus bulls. We continue to pride ourselves on the same quality we have always produced.
The demand for Angus and Angus cross bulls has been overwhelming, this year we are excited to have a small number of Limitless Cattle Co Simmental cross Angus hybrid bulls available for sale alongside BoonARKMs bulls. Limitless Cattle Co has a Simmental based herd with a few Angus cows which form the base of a very powerful Simmental cross breeding program. Please see the section on Limitless Cattle Co for more information.
We are pleased to present once again grain free yearling sale bulls, these have been on planted pasture and silage with a small amount of protein hay where needed. We consult with a nutritionist to ensure we continue on the right track. Our bulls are fed ‘low & slow’ to ensure we protect their longevity and fertility.
We have also moved to focus more on genomic testing and screening. We don’t just record data for EBVs, we genomics test ALL calves for added information and to improve the accuracy of their EBVs, with this test they are also sire verified, which we have found invaluable. Pesti virus and genetic conditions are also tested so you can be 100% sure in what your purchasing.
We have continued to look for new genetic opportunities to enhance our program. This year we have used some of the most sought after AI sires, such as MM Paratrooper (2019 $160,000 sale topper @ Millah Murrah), MM Rembrandt (2021 $240,000 2nd highest price bull @ Millah Murrah) and LD Capitalist (#6 for calves registered in Australia as of 2020, and it has been described that “his structure and soundness is flawless”).
We are excited about the genetic outcome of our extensive embryo transfer program which we have
utilised to increase herd numbers and maximise the genetic potential of our top cows.
Last year we successfully flushed one of our up and coming young cows Nightingale P539. A daughter of Sprys-W Nightingale M532, who we unfortunately lost to a snake bite when she had P539 as a young calf at foot. We purchased M532 as a young heifer back in 2017, she was the natural calf at foot of Sprys donor cow Coolana Nightingale G281 who was a successful donor cow with a total of 17 progeny registered to her, at five different studs over the country.
We flushed P539 to Dunoon Prime Minister P758, the $140,000 top priced Angus bull in NSW in 2020. He combines ‘outstanding phenotype with a great set of numbers and impeccable temperament’. First calves due this spring.
We continue to utilise Embryo Transfer to maximise the genetic potential of elite females not only in our herd but in some of Australia’s most respected and renowned breeders. We stand firmly behind our product, and strive to maintain the quality and service the BoonARKM name has always provided. Our focus to provide a consistent line of quality bulls with eye appeal, and balanced accurate data continues, and is evident in this years 2023 sale line up.

Jordan&Annie Palmer with Cloverlea Dairy & Rockwella Farms
Limitless Cattle Co
We (Jordan & Annie) have been breeding black Simmental’s since 2018, after visiting some Simmental breeders in the USA and seeing their potential we decided to incorporate the breed into our breeding program alongside the Angus herd.
Due to the lack of such offering in the hills, and our love and passion for the two breeds, we decided to expand the stud, maintaining the focus on breeding Simmental Angus hybrid cross bulls. An offering of stud sire quality ET full blood Simmental & Angus bulls will be available in future.
This year Limitless have 6 cross bred bulls that we are thrilled to put up along side BoonARKM’s offering of bulls. All of which are differing percentages of Simmental and Angus, varying form 25% Simmental Angus to 75% Simmental Angus. Something to suit all programs.
Many hours have been spent travelling the country and internationally, selecting the right type of cows and sires to fit our market that can bring what they believe is the best of the black Simmental and Angus breed.
2022 has been a pivotal year with the new genetics we have invested in to add to the power of our program. Functional, sound and productive.
The most recent of these purchases was a PTIC Angus female out of Pine Creek’s Festive Female sale in December 2022 for $14k the equal 3rd highest price female of the sale. We love the style and overall capacity of this female, and a pedigree stacked with star studded genetics. What’s not to love.
We also purchased a ‘Sassy’ female from Woonallee Simmental’s female sale in February and a ‘NLC Gen Ten’ daughter from the 50 lots for 50 years special Woonallee female sale in November, as well as an ET ‘Upgrade’ female and ‘Olivia’ female, both selected and purchased privately from the Woonallee herd. These females we believe represent the breed to a tee. We have also invested in a number of embryos out of some of Australia’s most respected Simmental and Angus breeders, our first batch of embryos are due to calve this autumn, with another batch to be implanted this may for calving 2024.
We are excited to have our top ‘Dream’ Angus cow in the donor pen this year, with flushes too MM Paratrooper and Knowla So Right in the pipe line once she calves down. These embryos will be implanted in our herd of recipents to rear for claves that will sell in 2025. These will be exciting and are definitely once to watch out for.
Last year we had the honour to showcase our Simmental’s in the 50 year celebration at 2022 feature Royal Sydney show. One of the most prestigious competitions in the country. We were thrilled to be awarded Champion middle weight Simmental steer and Grand Champion Simmental steer in the special Simmental steer show, our pure bred black steer went on to win a silver medal on hook in the open purebred competition.
We are extremely proud of our very productive herd of black Simmental and Angus cows that form a base for our cross breeding program.
All our bulls are registered with the Simmental or the Angus society.

Genomics Testing & EBVs
Genomics testing benefits: Increases the accuracy of EBVs for time consuming, difficult, expensive and hard to measure traits, such as IMF, EMA, net feed intake. It delivers more dependable and comprehensive EBVs and Indexes. 50K testing is invaluable when selecting bulls for use. Its challenging as the information available at this point in there lives is restricted- more so with yearling bulls. Genomics testing provides accurate information for important traits that will assist you to ensure you are purchasing the right bull for you.
EBVs- Calculated for a range of traits within Angus BREEDPLAN, covering calving ease, weight, maternal performance, fertility, feed efficiency and carcase. EBVs are expressed in units of measurements for each particular trait. They are shown as positive or negative differences between an individual animal’s genetic difference and the genetic base to which the animal is compared. For example, a bull with an EBV of +30kg for 400-day weight is estimated to have a genetic merit 30kg above the breed base of 0kg. Since the breed base is set to a historic benchmark, the average EBVs of the animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic progress within the breed. The percentages are where the bull sits in a percentage compared to the rest of the breed. Eg. the top 3% of the breed.
Selection index EBVs- are a reflection on both short term profit generated by an animal through sale of their progeny, and the longer term profit generated by their daughters in a self-replacing cow herd.
For more information, speak to one of our team at the field day or visit the Angus Australia website.
Benefits of Simmental X Angus
*The ultimate in performance*
Added growth, extra carcase of the Simmental while still maintaining the softness, marketability and calving ease of the Angus breed- it just makes sense!
This is the reason we introduced Black Simmental’s into our program. Simmental’s have allowed us to increase hybrid vigour in our calves without loosing the primary goals of our Angus program. Higher growth rates, higher yields while still being BLACK, % ANGUS AND POLLED.
Hybrid vigour- Increased weights, growth and overall productivity without changing anything BUT the bull.
10-20% more performance in the first cross claves and 20-25% where the F1 female is used as a breeder. Thats 70kgs, or almost $400 (based on 350kgs/calf) just by using a Simmental x Angus bull. Plus it gets better every time you use the cross.
The benefits of buying a yearling bull: Nature intended bulls to work at 12-14 months of age. This
is when they become sexually mature. At this age they are still light and agile to serve heifers and cows alike without high risk of injuring themselves. Compared to 2 year old bulls who are often fed up to large weights to auction, this way they run higher risk of injury while serving cows. According to research by NSW Agriculture in the 1990’s, bulls used as yearlings have less incidences of breakdown or injury and a longer working life. This means more calves over a longer period and lower costs per calf. Let’s do the math...
Average yearling bull at auction $5,500, his average working life 5 years, number of calves 230 (30 in first year, 60 thereafter), price per calf = $24.
Average 2 year old at auction $7,500, his average working life 3 years, number of calves 150, price per calf = $50.
The number one question that we get asked when people buy yearling bulls, is “will he reach my cows?”
YES! But having said that, you must use a well grown yearling bull. Angus by nature are very determined and resourceful. At BoonARKM our breeding decisions and sale day preparations keep this in mind so that you can be confident that your bull won’t have any issues mating cows.
NO! Just because he is a yearling bull, it doesn’t make him a calving ease bull (a heifer bull). Any bulls effect on calving ease and alike traits are determined by his genetics. Suitable calving ease yearling bulls are ideal for heifers and less injury will occur to the heifers.
Our Recommendations:
Due to yearling bulls working and still growing, they can come out of cows looking worn down. This is a good sign that he has been working for you. Recovery for yearling bulls after coming out of mating is crucial. If he is not looked after at this stage then he will probably not make his mature weight potential until he is 3 or 4 years of age, if not at all.
We recommend you don’t run older bulls or bulls that are significantly bigger in size with yearling bulls in the first year. These bigger bulls can injure yearling bulls while he is serving. Join for no longer than 6 weeks. Make sure he is up to date with vaccinations. Selenium, vitamin B12, A, D, and E are all helpful, nutrition plays a vital role to ensure he is looked after to gain the most out of his genetics as with any bull.
Reference Sires & Dams
Bloodlines of our stock are from some of Australia’s most sought after cow families such as Wilcoola, Dream and Blackbird. All having proven progeny. We are always actively looking for new genetics to improve our herd and we have some exciting matings coming up, including GAR Drive, Paratrooper, Rembrandt, and our exciting new purchase form Spry’s Angus Sprys-W Total Focus R605, a complete outcross for us, with super figures and great phenotype to back him up. His donor dam is a super female who has 46 progeny recorded with 3 studs. We are excited to see the first of his calves this Autumn.
Featured Dams:
SMZP539 - BoonARKM M532 Nightingale P539. Our up and coming young donor dam, a daughter of Sprys-W Nightingale M532, who we unfortunately lost to a snake bite when she had P539 as a young calf at foot. P539 is extra special to our herd. We purchased M532 as a young heifer back in 2017, she was the natural calf at foot of Sprys donor cow Coolana Nightingale G281 who was a successful donor cow with a total of 17 progeny registered to her, at five different studs across the country. We love P539’s capacity and depth. Sound feet and easy doing dam with the X factor that turns heads. We look forward to our first drop of calves out of her this coming spring.
SMZL347 - BoonARKM Rosie Dream. A very successful cow family in our herd. This cow family has been our most successful in the show ring. With L347 being apart of the interbreed sires progeny at Adelaide show, she was also junior champion the same year. Her Dam, our beloved B3, who was a multi broad ribbon winner herself, was flushed and daughters retained in the herd by A241. We have also exhibited steers out of this cow family with overwhelming results. A top 3 place getter in the carcase section with a ‘Dream’ blood steer at Melbourne show. Super docile, huge capacity and spring of rib, they are sound, and overall really well put together cows. Progeny have sold to $10k. Pictured is L347 as a junior heifer wining junior champion heifer at the Royal Adelaide Show.
