Dave’s Desk

It's a good time to be in the Angus business in Canada. Yes, I know we have all personally experienced the ups and downs of the cattle business over the last few years and are anxiously awaiting the results of this season's bull sales. But all it takes is one small step, followed by another and another and things can quickly change for the better. ose steps are happening as we put this issue to press.

Page 4

Commercial Edition 2010*

Building on the exceptional success of the World Angus Forum highlighting our genetics, Canadian Angus have received unprecedented international recognition. Red Angus dominated the Champions at the recent Denver National Western Stock Show, with all 4 Grand and Reserve Champions either bred or & bred and exhibited by Canadian breeders, along with several division champions and class winners. In the Black show at Denver tremendous interest was generated by Canadian genetics both in the show and in the Yards. More Champions and division winners resulted and to top it all off, a Canadian Champion Pen of Bulls, all by a Canadian sire. I would like to personally congratulate all the exhibitors who made the trek south of the border on their success. Full Canadian results can be found on page 73. Good things are not only happening for Angus in the show ring, but in the 'beef business' as well. Gerry Duckworth of Courval, Saskatchewan reports that the first shipment of Canadian Beef to Europe will take place this spring, something we've been told for years could not be done. Duckworth says that by taking all the steps required to meet

Angus World

their health protocol, the EU is anxious for Canadian product (most of their beef imports come from Africa right now). e best news is that one of the criteria for these exports is animals must be Angus based. is could open up a huge chunk of market for commercial Angus cattle operations, and in turn purebred breeders and their bull and female sale prospects. Watch for the full story in the next issue of Angus World and announcements as they happen on EverythingAngus.com. e often quoted words of astronaut Neil Armstrong were: at's one small step for man; one huge leap for mankind. In our case the huge leap came first: the 2009 World Angus Forum in Canada. e small steps are now following - and that's what will pay the huge dividends. Again, it's a good time to be in the Angus business in Canada. I can hardly wait for the next step.

Alberta Angus Commercial Breeder of the Year

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the Alberta Angus Association’s Commercial Breeders of the Year – Jim & Carol Hern. Jim and Carol Hern own and operate Hern Ranches; the X-4 Ranch on the South Saskatchewan River south of Bindloss and the Bar Diamond Ranch on the Red Deer River northwest of Bindloss in Special Areas #2 and #3. Although the ranches are only about 15 miles apart, the terrain & rainfall varies dramatically. The rugged steep river breaks on the South Saskatchewan River are a striking contrast to the gentle sloping draws that cradle the Red Deer River The Hern Ranch is a cow/calf operation with around 600 mother cows that range on sandhills and short grass country. The current ranches are fortunate to have good water supply thanks to spring fed dugouts and numerous other springs along the river banks. The Hern family has worked hard to ensure over grazing does not occur and that there is grass carry over to the next year. The ranches have had five great years of grass growth but the Herns know there are cycles and there will be years without sufficient moisture, such as they have experienced this year on the Bar Diamond Ranch. In good years the ranches could probably run 150 more head, but then this would create additional problems during the dry years. Jim is the actively involved as owner & manager. Their oldest son Jay is ranching with them. The Herns have full-time ranch managers and their wives living on each ranch; Harold and Jean Anderson on the Bar Diamond, and Bob and Judie Riehl on the X-4 or the home ranch, "Both families have been with us so long, over twenty years, that the Hern’s consider them 'family'." Carol, retired from teaching in 2006. Carol's 27 year teaching career, including 20 years as principal at Bindloss, was highlighted with the regional "Excellence in Teaching Award" in 1990. Page 74

Commercial Edition 2010*

She is now the full time gopher, does the ranch books, manages the sideline businesses, and rides when needed. In 1962, Jim's parents Ben and Helen Hern followed a lifelong desire to own a ranch and purchased the Red Jacobson ranch south of Bindloss. Jim’s Dad was raised in Empress and was a railroad engineer for 22 years and owned a home in Calgary on Scotchman’s Hill. It really is a small world because Gail Wildman’s uncle was Red Jacobsen. Ben & Helen Hern used the house in Calgary as a down payment on the ranch at Bindloss. The deal was done on a hand shake, they traded houses, furniture and all. This provided Red with a great vantage point, because 10 years later he was able to watch all 3 Hern brothers compete at the 1972 Calgary Stampede. Jim & his brother Benny competed in Steer wrestling and bull riding & and their brother Allan rode Bareback horses Carol came from a ranching family south of Irvine in the Cypress Hills, her parents are Jim and Inga Schneider. Few people know that Jim Schneider, at one time, was one of the largeat cattle feeders in Alberta. He was a strong business influence in Carol & her brother Brian’s life. Brian & his wife Donna ranch 12 miles east of Medicine Hat. Jim and Carol made a long term commitment to each other & were married in 1973. In 1979, Jim's parents retired to Medicine Hat. In 1986, Jim and Carol purchased the home ranch from Jim's brothers, Ben and Allan, and in 1991 acquired the Bar Diamond Ranch. "Jim & Carol sincerely appreciate and admire the commitment & perseverence and years of hard work that their parents have endured. They truly believe that their parents efforts helped to provide the quality of life they now have. Through their example, they learned to put 100% effort into whatever they do. Ranching and farming is not for the weak hearted." That strong work ethic and Angus World

perserverance is seen in Jim and Carol's three grown children. Jay, Craig, and Leanne who all boarded in Medicine Hat for high school to take part in the rep sports programs. All three of them reached prestigious levels in their athletics. Jay played professional hockey, Craig played professional baseball, and Leanne had a fastball scholarship in Des Moines, Iowa where she received her four year nursing degree. All of the children and their families do what they can to help out on the ranch. The unique landscapes of the Bindloss area have also inspired the creation of two ranch-based businesses. "Riverbend Jet Boat Tours.com", where clients stay in the 106 year-old original log ranch house and enjoy home cooked ranch -style meals on the Bar Diamond Ranch and tour by jet boat the South Saskatchewan and Red Deer Rivers. They also offer release pheasant hunting and wild bird hunting on both ranches. The company, in its eighth year of operation as "Alberta Western Uplands.com" and has had hunters and visitors from the US, Canada, Norway, France, and South America enjoy their hospitality. The Hern family was presented with the good stewardship award from Fish and Wildlife in 2006 and won the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Beef Pen Show in 2003 and has placed numerous times. Their involvement in the community has included coaching sports and Carol, Jim, & his brother-in law Brian(who is hear tonight with his lovely wife Donna, to help celebrate) owned & operated the Medicine Hat Maverick’s of the Western Baseball league for 6 years. Jim was also elected to serve on the regional health board and was Chairman of Corporate Services for the Palliser Health Authority Board for five years. Last year 2008, at the Calgary Stampede, the Hern family was honored as "Farm Family of the Year" for Special Areas. The Herns are Very Proud To Be Angus Breeders In the early sixties, Ben and Helen Hern, went to Sheridan, Wyoming and purchased eight Red Angus bulls from Sally Forbes and Morris Dixon and that was the start of their Angus relationship. Later they bought bulls from Dave & Gail Wildman. When Jim married Carol they switched to black. Carol's dad and brother, Jim and Brian Schneider, had a great herd of black Angus cattle. They started keeping replacements from their herd and overtime changed completely to black. Hern’s have worked hard over the years to improve their herd. That was evident when Jim & Carol sold 430 calves last fall. They went in 4 drafts. The buyers just licked them up. They try to keep the best heifers that will make good mothers and supplement their herd with seed continued on next page stock

Saskatchewan Angus Commercial Breeder of the Year Earl Switzer in 1955. He also purchased 20 purebred cows from Earl in the middle 70’s and kept all the heifers for breeding purposes. The ranch now runs around 300 head of cows and around 100 to 130 Don & Joyce Harbor heifer calves are kept and fed every winter. 30 to 50 of those will remain in the Jim & Jodie Harbor herd and be bred for March and April calving. The calving date on the cows has been backed off until Don and Joyce Harbor were married in 1951 the first week in April mostly to avoid spring and raised three children, Corinne, Jim, and Tana. storms. They also feel calving on green grass Corinne married Rick and they have one daughter, eliminates a lot of scour problems and the warmer Wendy. Tana married Scott and they have two weather allows the calves to get up and nurse the children, Ashley and Corey. Jim married Jodie and cow sooner. Branding is usually in early June and they have two boys, Brock and Lane. The girls have at that time all calves are vaccinated and tagged moved on but Jim remains on the ranch working with certified Angus tags. with Don, Brock and Lane. Steer calves are weaned and sold in late October Don and Joyce started farming and ranching in at the Assiniboia Livestock Auction. They also sell 1952. Times being tough, they started small but a select group of replacement heifers in the Short with renting land and purchasing some, the farm Grass Sale the 3rd Saturday in April. Over the years began to grow. Don and Joyce started out with a Roy Rutledge and the entire Switzer family has mixed herd, but soon turned their attention to served them very well and they will continue to do Black Angus. Without having a great set of business with them. working facilities at the time, Don figured going All the feed for the cows is grown right on the to the Angus breed would pay dividends by not ranch as they have seeded a lot of their farmland having to treat bad eyes and bad bags. The Angus back to grass. Green feed is also sown and baled breed was discounted for many years, but Don for forage. Oats, cps and barley are the grains of stuck with it and purchased his first black bull from

choice. If enough green feed is grown they will combine some barley, sell some and the rest will be put through the cattle. They like to graze stubble in the fall and if the conditions are favourable they don’t start feeding until the 15th of December. With water always being a concern in southern Saskatchewan, Don drilled two deep wells so the cattle would always have fresh water in the winter and fall. Jim stayed home after high school to work on the ranch. Jim’s boys are also very active in all facilities of the ranch. Brock is a very good cattleman and if he sees an animal once seems to remember it forever. Don always had a good eye for cattle and it seems he has passed that trait on to Brock. Lane also works on the ranch and seems to like the haying season best. Lane is not around much in the winter as he is busy playing hockey. One thing is for sure, when people say the coffee pot is always on, the Harbour homes are the perfect example. As we all know, farming and ranching are a great way of life and one we all love. The Harbour’s are hoping agriculture will stay viable for all the generations to come. Congratulations to the Harbor Ranch on a very successful cattle and farming operation on being selected as this year’s Commercial Producer of the Year!

from purebred breeders such as Bill Dillabough, Kim Robertson, Rivercrest, Thompson, Remital, and top commerical breeders such as Delvin Stuber, Barry Neubauer, Doug Ellis, and Jack Stelter. Our bull battery came from such breeders as Doug and Mike Munton, Cudlobes, Hamilton Farms, Hersey Ranches, Ranchers Choice, Reid Angus, Don Delorme, Remington Ranches, and Pahl Ranches. The Hern’s feel they could not do what they do without their community's continued support and assistance. Hern’s are avid participants in the 'age verification program' with the Canadian Angus Association. It

is simple and easy to do. Contact the Canadian Angus Association office, give them the number of tags you need, then at branding tag your calves and fax the numbers back to the Angus Society. A very easy program to administer and a benefit when the cattle buyers prefer to buy age verified animals at the fall calf sales. Jim & Carol have come to appreciate the amount of time and effort it takes to raise Purebred cattle. They attended all of the 2009 World Angus Forum. They felt that the barns, cattle, owners and the people connected with the show were tremendous. The people involved with organizing the show have

to be commended. With Spruce Meadows as the host and people from all over the world, it was truly a world class event that they were proud to attend, and a venue that made them proud to be Angus breeders. Jim's motto has always been, "Fear is temporary, but regret is forever." Let’s all face our fears & live without regret. Congratulations to the Alberta Angus Association’s 2009 Commercial Breeders of the Year, Jim & Carol Hern, of Bindloss, Alberta. by Doug Reid

Angus Genetics Inc® Announces First Genomic-Enhanced EPDs Angus Genetics Inc.® Announces First Genomic-enhanced EPDs from High Density 50K Whole Genome Scan AGI, IGENITY® University of Missouri and Iowa State University partnership provides best value for Angus producers. Angus Genetics Inc.® (AGI) announces the introduction of the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) derived from a High Density Whole Genome Scan with 50,000 markers (HD WGS). This milestone in genetic advancement is a direct result of the collaboration between AGI, a subsidiary of the American Angus Association® (AAA); the University of Missouri; Iowa State University; and IGENITY®, a division of Merial. The high-accuracy GE-EPDs are powered by the new high-accuracy IGENITY profile for Angus that includes 14 economically important traits derived from the 50,000-marker HD WGS. Today, the high-accuracy IGENITY profile for Angus is the only genomic test available that provides GE-EPDs for young animals, resulting in significantly improved accuracies for Angus EPDs. The IGENITY profile for Angus is the only DNA profile used by AGI in the formulation of GE-EPDs. And the AGI/Merial partnership is the beef industry’s only source for marker-assisted EPDs. “Individual Angus producers who are interested in making rapid genetic advancement through the use of DNA technology should use the IGENITY profile for Angus,” says Bill Bowman, AGI president. “This is the industry’s only DNA profile used by AGI and the American Angus Association in the formulation of GE-EPDs. We are excited about this development because it will continue to give Angus breeders and IGENITY customers a significant advantage in the marketplace today.” Last summer, AGI and IGENITY entered into an agreement to provide American Angus Association members with GE-EPDs. The partnership marks the first time in the industry’s history that beef producers have access to GE-EPDs for multiple traits at once — and all derived from a breed-specific Angus profile. The introduction of HD WGS is the partnership’s most recent — and perhaps most innovative — development for the industry. ”Our partnership with IGENITY will continue to greatly benefit Angus producers of Page 76

all herd sizes. Producers can be confident the high-accuracy IGENITY profile will help to improve their selection decisions, to indicate the genetic merit of their animals, and to increase the accuracy of EPDs,” Bowman says. “Through AGI and IGENITY’s common vision to provide the most advanced solutions to beef producers’ genetic selection and management needs, we will continue to bring advancements like the high-accuracy IGENITY profile to the marketplace.” “The new high-accuracy IGENITY profile is more than just an HD WGS,” says Dr. Stewart Bauck, IGENITY executive director of research and development. “Using advanced techniques, the research and development team at IGENITY worked with Dr. Jerry Taylor at the University of Missouri and Dr. Dorian Garrick at Iowa State University to identify and combine the most powerful candidate gene markers and HD WGS 50,000 markers to create the most comprehensive and cost-effective product for Angus cattle on the market. Further, the high-accuracy IGENITY profile for Angus was developed specifically for Angus cattle, which makes it more predictive of Angus performance than a product developed across several breeds.” “The high-accuracy IGENITY profile for Angus has been thoroughly researched and third-party validated, which — together with its incorporation into genetic evaluation — makes it one of the most important advances in beef cattle breeding in the marketplace today,” Dr. Bauck says. The product’s initial results caused high interest in both the academic community and the beef industry when presented at the 2009 Beef Improvement Federation annual convention. “The entire industry has been waiting for this breakthrough,” says Dr. Taylor. “One of the benefits of GE-EPDs derived from the HD WGS and causal gene markers is the dramatic increase in accuracy, which helps take the risk out of selection decisions for both commercial cow-calf and seedstock producers,” says Dr. Taylor. “Further, the GE-EPDs are easy to use because they combine the high-accuracy IGENITY profile results with traditional AAA EPDs that producers are familiar with using.” “The increase in accuracy from incorporating the high-accuracy IGENITY profile for Angus is equivalent to adding about 16 progeny to a weanling bull’s marbling EPD.1 For young bulls with ultrasound, incorporating the IGENITY profile is comparable to adding an additional 12 progeny on top of ultrasound data,” says Dr. Taylor. “This can dramatically shorten Angus World

generation intervals, allowing producers using Angus seedstock to make faster genetic progress.” “Less risk and faster genetic progress — the high-accuracy IGENITY profile is an incredible value for beef producers,” says Dr. Taylor. Through the comprehensive DNA offering from IGENITY, Angus producers can receive analyses on 14 economically important traits, including the most comprehensive list of GE-EPDs: • Marbling • Percent choice (quality grade) • Docility • Ribeye area • Yield grade • Average daily gain • Fat thickness • Heifer pregnancy • Feed efficiency • Carcass weight • Stayability (longevity) • Yearling weight • Tenderness • Maternal calving ease Plus the option to test for coat color, NH and AM in the same sample. Manitoba Angus Annual Meeting Manitoba Angus Association’s Annual Meeting and Banquet, was held January 9, 2010 in Brandon Manitoba, where a review of the 2009 Year was highlighted by the World Angus Forum event in Canada. A good crowd was on hand for the afternoon meeting, where the committees gave their reports on the successful year the Manitoba Angus Association experienced, inspite of the challenges faced by the beef industry. The Association has worked hard over the past year promoting Angus Cattle at the Manitoba Display at the World Angus Forum in Calgary, through 4-H awards, Junior shows and events, Green Tagged Angus Feeder Sales, Summer Gold Show along with our Fall Gold, Fall Keystone Sale and their Manitoba Angus Outlook Newsletter. Doug Fee, Canadian Angus CEO from Calgary, addressed the members highlighting the success of the World Angus Forum in 2009, the Canadian Angus Ranchers Endorsement Beef Program and some of the new and upcoming

programs that will be offered in the New Year. During the meeting, round table groups worked on the Angus Green tag Program, Canadian Angus Ranchers Endorsement Program, promotion and advertising of the Angus Breed. Many new ideas came out of these sessions for the new Board of Directors to work on. The new Manitoba Angus Board of Directors was named during the meeting. The Board is as follows: Shawn Birmingham (President), Dallas Johnston (Vice-President), Lois McRae (Canadian Director), Megan Kemp (Junior Director), Kent Topham, Allan Nykoliation, Doug Stamler, Ron Batho, Dan VanSteelandt, Jeff Fraser and Arlene Kirkpatrick (Secretary/Treasurer). New three year term Directors are Dan VanSteelandt and Dallas Johnston; new two year term Director is Ron Batho; new one year term Directors

are Allan Nykoliation and Jeff Fraser. Special Thanks to Alana Van Steelandt, Tim Baker and Ryan Shearer, our retiring Directors fo all their help over the past years. The day wrapped up with an annual all-breeds banquet. The Manitoba Hereford, Limousin, Simmental and Charolais Associations joined the Manitoba Angus Association for a roast beef dinner and presentation by Tod Wallace of Manitoba Agriculture on the Grow Safe System which tracks feed intake, efficiency and health on livestock. A great time was had by all and a huge “hats off ” goes to all who supported the event through donations, and purchasing of auction items. Submitted by Lois McRae Promotion and Advertising MAA

The Bray and Family –BEddystone, Manitoba Manitoba Angus Association is pleased to announce that Kelly and Leah Bray and Family, –B-, are the 2009 winners of our Commercial Producer of the Year award. The Brays along with their children: Nicholas, Devin, Nathan and Lauren and Kelly’s Parents George and Sylvia operate their cow calf ranch in the Eddystone area. Their herd consists of 300 cows with 60 replacement heifers to ensure a young cowherd. Presently 16 Black Angus bulls are turned out on the 1st of June to insure 10th of March calving. Throughout the summer mature cows graze on Native pasture while the young cows graze on tame rotational pastures and native grasses. In the fall, the Angus cross calves

Are weaned and are back grounded until the end of January when they are then sold. Each year Kelly and Nicholas along with George’s wisdom see that 8 to 4 Black Angus Bulls are purchased to continue adding new genetics and to keep the bull pen young. Kelly and Leah are also very active in their local 4-H club, school, church and community. Kelly is a volunteer firefighter and participates in the local grazing club. Leah is a teacher and chauffeurs everyone to their activities. Nicholas is a director fro the Manitoba Junior Angus Association. Recently he ahs won the TD Agriculture scholarship in which he will use towards his education next year at the University of Manitoba. Nicholas was also the recipient of the Grand Moffat Herd builder Award in 2009 and purchased a Black Angus heifer for his herd. Devin, Nathan and Lauren are busy with their activities. Kelly, Leah and their family are fortunate to be able to participate in the beef industry by producing top quality Angus Cattle. Manitoba Angus congratulates the Bray family on using Angus in their program and hope they will continue for years to come.

Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Program Manitoba Youth Win Purebred Heifers Through Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Program Nicholas Bray, a 16-year-old producer from Eddystone; Rachael Verwey, a 13-year-old producer from Portage la Prairie and Laura Tolton, a 14-year-old producer from Carberry, were the 2009 recipients of the Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Awards. On August 18, 2006, Grant Moffat of Forrest, Manitoba went missing at the age of 55. The Grant Moffat fund was set up with generous donations from cattleman, friends and relatives across the Canada to offer a reward for tips leading to his whereabouts. After a year, a committee handling the funds made the decision to channel the money to Manitoba Youth for the purpose of starting their own purebred cattle herds. Grant Moffat, Holmsyde Charolais, Forrest, Manitoba, was a Charolais breeder, photographer, writer, youth enthusiast, judge, sales manager, fitter, editor and accountant. He was a special person that everyone could learn something from. Grant spent many hours helping youth start in the livestock business. The Grand Moffat Herdbuilder award was set up to continue this initiative. Youth submit written applications and the committee reviews them to select the Juniors they feel will benefit the most from this award. Annually over 20 and up to 40 applicants have been received. For the past three years, up to $2,000 has been awarded to each of three Junior members to purchase a purebred female to start their herd. To date 9 juniors from across the province have benefited from the program. Nicholas Bray selected a Black Angus heifer, Rachael Verwey selected a Charolais heifer and Laura Tolton purchased a Black Angus heifer. These heifers were selected at fall, purebred sales in Manitoba. This program has benefit many youth in Manitoba. Check out the website www.grantmoffat.com for more details.

2009 Manitoba Purebred Breeder of the Year Champion Pair of bulls, Breeder’s Herd, Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder. They also had Reserve Grand Champion Bull at Farmfair in Edmonton along with a very successful Agribition with their bull SCC Right Time making it into the Top 10 of the RBC Supreme Challenge….Quite a Feat. The Stewarts in addition to consigning cattle to our Association sale, The Keystone Klassic, they also supplied the fundraising heifer for our Provincial Association.

Perhaps more important than all the show ring success is their extremely strong support of the Junior Programs. They sponsored the Canadian Junior Angus Showdown, the Junior Show at the Manitoba Livestock Expo and the Junior Beef Extreme at the Canadian Western Agribition. I believe that their Junior support is just as important because without the Juniors, there will be no one left to carry on things not only with Angus but all breeds. Manitoba is pleased to have dedicated breeders like Stewart Cattle Co, involved in the Angus Breed.

Pictured L to R: Shawn Birmingham, Manitoba President, Brent, Kelsey and Dale Stewart

Manitoba Angus is pleased to announce Stewart Cattle Co. of Russell, Manitoba as the Purebred Breeder of the year for 2009. Brent, Dale & Kelsey Stewart operate a 110 purebred Angus and 65 commercial cowherd. In February the Stewart’s successfully held their first annual Bull and Commercial Female Sale. In June they brought a string of Angus cattle to Treherne, Manitoba for our Summer Gold Show. At this show they were awarded Breeder’s Herd, Champion Bull, Reserve Champion Female and Champion Yearling Heifer. In July they took a display herd to the World Angus Forum in Spruce Meadows. The quality of Angus cattle they try to produce was evident at this world-class show as they captured the Intermediate Yearling Champion Bull. Also in July an Angus cross steer raised by the Stewart’s was a Division Champion at the Calgary Stampede. In addition to this the steer was the Reserve Champion Carcass Steer. In the Angus Breed carcass quality is what we have been promoting along with all the other good things about our breed. At our Fall Gold Show, the Stewart’s received Reserve Heifer Calf Champion, Champion Female, Junior Champion Bull, Senior Champion Bull, Grand Champion Bull, and

Maritime Angus Commercial Breeder of the Year

The 2009 Maritime Angus Commercial Breeder is West Country Farms, the Phillips family of Tyne Valley, PEI. The Phillips Brothers, John, Sherwin and Barry operate a large potato farm in the Arlington District and plant from 500-530 acres of potatoes each year. The acreage

is determined by the demand from the buyers, Cavendish Farms and McCains. The brothers have always followed a three year rotation on their potato land and for this reason a beef herd and the ‘free fertilizer’ from the beef cattle was a logical decision. They run a beef herd of about 70 head and use 2 bulls in their operation. In 2000 they made the decision to go with Angus bulls and have not looked back since. They are shareholders in the Atlantic Beef Products plant and run a very efficient and environmentally conscious operation. They are members of the Grand River Watershed Association. Barry is the family member most involved in the beef herd and he has taken many steps to make their

operation a sustainable farming unit. They are very conscious of herd health and animal husbandry is top notch in their operation. Congratulations to the Phillips Family of West Country Farms. In the photo Barry is seen receiving the Commercial Breeder Awards of Angus jackets for all family members, the perpetual Co- Op Atlantic Trophy and the Farm Focus keeper plaque. Presentation was made by Maritime Secretary Treasurer Betty Lou Scott and Eric Dixon and his grandson Vance. Also on the right in the picture is Wayne Gallup.

Alberta Angus Association Message

Hello and Happy New Year. I hope the 2010 calving season has started well for everyone. After bad weather lead to the cancellation of the AAA Annual Meeting and Hall of Fame

Awards Banquet that was to be held Dec. 5th, the meeting was rescheduled and held Jan. 17th in Olds. The Hall of Fame Banquet will be a standalone event, which will be held at a date that is yet to be determined. At the Annual Meeting elections were held for five available board positions. Laurie Hunter and Ricki Fleming were re-elected. We would also like to welcome Richard Latimer, Carolyn Congdon and Blake Macmillan to the board for new three year terms. I would like to thank Doug Newton, who served a three year term on the board, and Doug Reid, who retires from the board after 6 years, for their time and effort. Both Doug’s will be missed by the board and the association. Doug Reid was also presented with the “Cecilie Fleming Spirit of Angus Award” at the Annual Meeting,

congratulations to a very deserving recipient. The AAA also recognized John Lee at the AGM, presenting him with a thank you gift for all of his contributions as the Chairman of the World Angus Forum. Nominations for the CAA board were also made, with Gary Latimer and Cecilie Fleming both elected to a second term. I am also pleased to report from the AGM that the AAA is in a strong financial position moving into the new decade. As we move into 2010 the AAA is excited to build on current programs that benefit the commercial and purebred Angus breeder, and provide value for our membership. Good luck in the upcoming bull sale season. Colton Hamilton

Saskatchewan Angus Association Message

The 2010 annual meeting held in Saskatoon this past weekend saw some major changes to the Saskatchewan Angus Association board of directors, with myself elected President. I would like to thank Clarke Ward for the good job he did in his tenure as President. We also welcome 3 new board members: Karla Hicks, Jason Frey and Adam Knutson along with Dale Easton allowing his name to stand for another term. Many thanks to retiring director Jon Fox who put many years of service towards the Saskatchewan Angus Association. As new President I would like to introduce myself and give you a little background on our

operation. My wife Suzanne and I live 20 miles Southwest of Mankota, SK with our 2 boys Eric who is three and Luke who is one. We have a mixed farming operation calving 200 purebred Angus cows (60 red - 140 black) and seed approximately 1400 acres of cropland. We also work very closely with my father Allen and cousin Mike, to bring the total cows calved to 650 head. Our commercial cows are all bred Angus, both red and black. I also am a councillor for the RM #46 Glen McPherson and a director on the board of the Mankota Stockmen’s Weigh Co. The 2010 meetings were a hotbed of discussions with the biggest one being - hurry up and get done so we can beat the storm home. Well that one didn’t turn out so well. I am sure that everyone in the Province has a lot of snow to move out of their balestacks, yards, corrals and everywhere else. I guess we had to pay for the two weeks of lovely weather we had beforehand. Congratulations goes to Mike Howe and Howe Red Angus on being voted the 2010 Breeder of the Year. An official presentation will be done at their bull sale this spring. One of the main discussions at the Board Meeting and Annual Meeting centered around the aerosal policy and how it played out at last

Fall’s shows. There is a definite split on this topic and how it should be handled. If you have any questions or concerns please contact any of the Canadian Angus Board Members and let your opinions be heard before their next meeting, the third week in February. Some Angus events to remember for the summer of 2010 are as follows: - Canadian Angus Annual Meeting June 16 20, Halifax, NS. - Showdown 2010 July 8 - 11, Hyancinthe, QC. - Saskatchewan Angus Association Summer Gold & Junior Show, August 4 - 7, Prince Albert, SK . - Third Annual T Bar Invitational Golf Tournament, June 22 and 23, Dakota Dunes. I look forward to an exciting and challenging term as President. If you have any questions or concerns regarding issues affecting our association please contact myself or any of our board members. Good luck with your calving season and lets hope for fair weather and just maybe in six weeks to two months, that the creeks are running full and the grass is turning green. Clint Smith

Manitoba Angus Association Message

Well, for the past few weeks here in Manitoba we have had very good weather. This has made it very easy for Page 88

Commercial Edition 2010*

people to attend a few of our recent events. Our annual meeting was held on January 9 in Brandon. We had a very good turnout and there was a lot of good discussion on many key items. Aerosol band had good discussion and the majority thought that just banding paint would be the best thing to do at the current time. There was also a lot of discussion on green tags. A lot of people felt that the program would be more widely excepted if the tags could be purchased locally. We also had a lot of discussion on genetic defects. Thanks to Mr. Doug Fee for being in attendance to answer many different questions. From January 19 to 21 we had our booth at Manitoba Ag Days. This is a high traffic event and in Angus World

one day there were 14000 people in attendance. At this event we do a lot of promotion of green tags, and our great breed in general. There are always a lot of questions asked about the green tag program and we try to help teach people the benefits of the program. One producer reported that he got a 23 cent premium for his calves by using green tags. This shows that there can be major benefits to the program. We will be soon planning our summer gold show as well as our summer tour. We have not had a summer tour for a few years and I am very excited that it is going to happen this year. Shawn Birmingham

Ontario Angus Association Message

Hello to everyone! We are in the midst of a January thaw in Southern Ontario today as we are experiencing a heavy rainfall and temperatures well above the freezing mark. It is just what we don’t need for all those fresh calves arriving daily. We have just returned home from our Ontario Annual General meeting hosted by the Bluewater Zone in Alliston this year. It is great to spend some time catching up on the news and gossip with fellow Angus breeders from across Ontario. There was an excellent turnout and it is always good to see an interest taken by the members of the Association. This past year seemed to be one of the busiest

years our Ontario board has had with such projects as a new directory being produced, the World Angus Forum as well as the usual sales and events which are a usual part of our activities in Ontario. Our board will not change much for 2010 with the exception of Allison Nesbitt who has decided to hang up her director hat. She will be replaced by as a yet to be named representative from the Ottawa Valley zone. Many thanks to Allison for her contribution to the Board. In other election results, Jeff Whitely was re-elected as Director at large for a two year term. Also Tom McDonald was re-elected for his second three year term as our Canadian Director. Thank you to both for agreeing to fill these positions and committing the time required to do these jobs. Each year at our meeting we present various awards to deserving individuals as part of our annual meeting. Our 2009 Show Bull of the Year award was presented to John Lennox of Drumore Farms for his bull DRM Emblazon 33T. Our 2009 Show Female of the Year Award was presented to Brad Gilchrist of Gilchrist Farms for his female JL Evening Tinge 8001. Our 2009 Honorary President is Gary Harron of

Harron Farms from Elsinore. Our 2009 Commercial Breeder of the Year award went to Greg & Jayne McGillvary of Bruce County. Our 2009 Purebred Breeder of the Year award was presented to Ron & Ann McLean of Melmac Angus from Appin . A special congratulations from the Ontario Angus fraternity goes out to each of these individuals. The Ontario Angus Association annually presents two scholarships known as the A. Cameron McTaggart Scholarships. This year the recipients are Kyler Ribey, son of Terry and Pam Ribey of Paisley and Steven Ribey, son of Tammi and Brian Ribey also of Paisley. Following the meeting there was a presentation and discussion led by Kerr Farms, one of our Ontario participants in the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program. I’m sure that everyone in attendance has a better understanding and appreciation for the program and what is involved. In closing I would like to wish everyone a safe and successful calving season and hopefully a prosperous 2010 in the Angus business. Richard Tanner President - Ontario Angus Association

Maritime Angus Association Message

Hello everyone and a big thank you to all the commercial cattlemen who purchase the purebred seedstock that keep this industry going and make us the number one breed in Canada!

The Maritime Angus Association held its annual meeting on January 10 in Nappan, N.S. There was a large group of enthusiastic breeders representing all three provinces in attendance. One of the highlights of the meeting included recogniton of an Angus bull owned by Wheatley River Farm, Wheatley River PEI as the top gaining bull of the entire mixed breed test in Nappan NS. the bull is gaining over 5 lbs/day. The 2010 Maritime Angus field day and Junior show will be held June 11-12 in Pictou, NS. Make it a week long trip and attend this event as well as the CAA AGM the next week. We would love to see you! Information on the annual meetings as well as the 2009 commercial breeder of the year can be found elsewhere in this issue. On a sad note the passing of Kenneth Coles of

Angus World

Springvale, PEI who was a longtime Angus breeder was recognized. Executive of the Association remained the same with myself staying on as President and Wilfred Gilby as Vice-President. Ron Ford finished his term as director and we welcomed Julie Mutch to her first term. Frank MacMaster of MacMaster Choice Meats was the guest speaker and he discussed his Angus beef program which is now Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed. He will be looking for between 1000-2000 head of angus influenced maritime cattle to fit this program. See you in Halifax in June! Tim Dixon

CAA - President’s Message

John Donaldson I am on my way home from the NWSS in Denver as I write this and I am elated about the success of the Canadian Angus cattle that were shown there. Congratulations to all the banner winners and breeders that showed and sold cattle there. There is definitely an interest in Canadian cattle from the USA as well as other countries. The World Angus Forum last July was certainly the event of the decade to showcase Canadian genetics. I am pleased to report that with some grants the Association received for the Forum the WAF will not require all the funds that had been earmarked from the CAA reserves. Thanks again to all the hard working committee members and exhibitors. This spring when you are selling your bulls it is an

Page 90

Commercial Edition 2010*

ideal time to remind your buyers of the economic benefits of participating in the Angus Green Tag Program. Support the message in our ads that green tags enhance the Angus position in the industry and bring higher prices at the sales. As purebred Angus breeders we are obligated to protect our customers from any genetics that can affect our customer’s bottom line. It is our responsibility to ensure that this issue does not threaten to cause any further substantial damage to our industry. This is a critical time in the Angus business with economic uncertainty caused by COOL, animal rights activists and diseases. Governments are implementing challenging regulations and policies including dubious environmental rules. We are facing greater challenges and as a result margins have narrowed dramatically. Your support and involvement in the Canadian Angus Association is crucial to maintaining and protecting our position in the cattle industry. I would like to thank the members that took the time to write letters to the Board and call their Directors regarding the aerosol ban by the Association at shows. This will be a major issue to be discussed at the Board meeting in February in Saskatoon. We are an association of members and the Board exists to develop Policies on behalf of the members and sometimes it is difficult to please all the members. I hope that we can come to an

Angus World

agreement that will be fair to the members. My passion for Angus began almost 60 years ago when my father purchased his first 12 cows. My soul craves Angus cattle and I am much happier when they are part of my life. As many of you know I had a dispersal sale in September and I have been missing something in my life since then. I miss the breeding and waiting anxiously to see if I made the right choices (I don’t miss the middle of the night runs to the barn), I miss the camaraderie in the show ring and I miss looking out my window at the gorgeous Angus beauties. I purchased several females at Angus sales this winter and I look forward to appreciating them in my yard next fall. Thanks to all the understanding sellers that are caring for them for me until then. Many of you have noticed that my voice was getting very husky and there was a reason why. I am about to be treated with radiation for a cancerous throat tumour. The good news is: 1) that since it was caught in the early stages the prognosis is that I will have a complete recovery and 2) I will be drinking lots of milk shakes for a few weeks. Thank goodness for Canadian health care and Ben Ball for getting me that appointment! John Donaldson President Canadian Angus Association

Canadian Angus Association - CEO Message

C A N A D I A N A N G U S

Doug Fee

This edition of Angus World is referred to as the “Commercial Edition” and goes to an expanded mailing list of all those who purchased and had registered Angus animals transferred to you last year. The commercial Angus members who are included in this mailing are the most important people in the Association. They may not register calves, they don’t have to pay for a membership, but they are the ones who evaluate seedstock programs and decide where they go to buy their herd bulls and replacement females. The international market may be exciting and it’s always good news to talk about the appeal our genetics may have in other countries, but if it wasn’t for the commercial cowboy in Canada our Association and our members would not be in business. So to those of you who support us commercially please accept our thanks and know that your business is appreciated. Thank you for your support and confidence in Angus. An owner of a bull stud once told me there were good cattle in all breeds. He defined good cattle as those that are owned by people who pay

A S S O C Ask the CEO I Why don’t fieldmen have Angus tags to sell? We have a great tag program for commercial Angus A cattle and we will continue to do our best to promote sales of Angus tagged calves. The only complaint we T seem to get is that they are accessible only through the office. Anyone on staff can take an order for tags but I our tags are Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (or Québec in Quebec) tags and there are O Agri-Traçabilité specific limitations on sales and reporting N requirements. In order to comply with CCIA requirements, we have all our tags shipped from a central distribution point. We have done as much as possible to make ordering easy and all you need is to plan a few days ahead and order online or email, fax or phone the office and your tags will get to you within a week.

their bills. From the perspective of the office we may agree with that description but would also want to go a little further and say the good cattle are owned by those who do the paperwork and keep their records in proper shape. The best description of the good cattlemen can only come from their commercial customers who receive quality animals, good service, and decide who to do repeat business with. 2009 Statistical Review The Association retained its strong position in the purebred beef cattle industry in 2009 and ended the year with just over 57,000 registrations from 153,000 active registered breeding females. Our cow numbers were down about 3% which was expected given the difficult economic situation facing the industry. We were a little concerned that our transfers also declined a few points even though the total number of animals sold for breeding didn’t seem to decline. We continue to encourage our members to transfer all registered animals they sell and remind producers that it is their right to receive a transferred registration paper when they purchase a registered animal. Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Our new Angus beef endorsement program was unveiled in 2009. Our objectives are simple: we want to add value to your Angus tagged cattle by assuring feeders and packers they are buying real Angus cattle. Through the use and application of our registered logo and trademark consumers will know that the product being offered is endorsed by the Angus breeders who produced it. There may be some growing pains and challenges but I think the program will be a winner for all. The first challenge is a good one.

We’ve been told there aren’t enough Angus tagged animals to meet the demand so we’ll be investing a lot of energy to encourage more of you to get your Angus tags. Check out the Association website at www.cdnangus.ca for more details. Another Challenge There’s been considerable chat about genetic defects, especially Arthrogryposis Multiplex, Osteopetrosis and Neuropathic Hydrocephalus. Thankfully it’s mainly talk and we have not had a single reported case in the registered herd. The level of concern does justify taking precautions and science has made simple DNA tests available that can identify the recessive gene that could cause a defect to occur. With the information available, good breeders can continue to avoid genetic problems. All Angus registration papers now indicate any animals that have an animal in its pedigree that has either been identified as a carrier or identified to be free of the defect. We haven’t had any serious problems and by taking advantage of what we know it will be easier for breeders to avoid any in the future. Looking Ahead It’s been my experience that cattlemen usually talk gloomy and yet act optimistic. They are very expressive about the challenges, the weather, the economy, the government and bureaucrats. At the same time they look for the new herd bull, they find joy in the new calf crop, and are always planning for next year. Most purebred herds have their new calves starting, the commercial calves will be starting soon and I share the optimism that we can overcome the challenges and that this year will be a good one. Let’s do everything we can to make sure it is.

Does an Angus tag guarantee a premium?

you will add value by proving your calves have Angus genetics but you still need to raise them properly and sell them smart to get the best prices.

There’s an old adage about the only things you can be guaranteed are death and taxes. The Association is making a serious investment in time, promotion and support to add value to Angus tagged animals but producers still need to do their homework. CanFax surveys during the past three years report average prices for Angus tagged calves are higher than other breeds or even other animals identified as Angus but not tagged. However, within the averages are some that didn’t do as well as others. It could be the lack of quality or conditioning or the fact the sale was scheduled at a poor time or that an order buyer had no competition and made a great deal. We do think

Commercial Outreach

Throughout the years, the Angus breed has provided field service throughout Canada, more so in some parts than others. The Association has provided extensive coverage to all parts of

Canada over the past 10 years. We have also placed two extra field staff down east along with two part-time staff out west, mostly in the fall. I cover the entire country, but probably more west than east, simply because of where I live. We, as a breed, place a lot of emphasis on the commercial industry and totally understand it is the backbone of our industry. Every one of our reps eats, breathes, sleeps and lives for the commercial sector of our business. A lot of ground is covered in a year, attending conferences, feedlots, auction marts, bull sales, producers and meetings. Along with representation at events, we also provide you free age verification when you purchase tags from the Canadian Angus Association. Our new

Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program gives you an option on marketing your calves as the demand for Angus tagged cattle grows every day. We are a proud lot when it comes to promoting Angus to our commercial customers. Let us know if we can help you learn about the many programs and initiatives that we provide to the commercial industry. You can call the office at 1-888-571-3580 or visit our website at www.cdnangus.ca for information. Brian Good CAA Commercial Fieldman (403) 391-4037

2009 Fall Feeder Sale Report The following summaries are a small report of what our field representatives saw and observed in their respective regions. Prices are not noted, as they vary across the country depending on quality, trucking, demand and location. If any one of us can assist you with information regarding marketing your calves and where we establish outlets for calf sales, or private treaty inquiries, please feel free to call any one of us for information. “It was a great pleasure and honour to assist and represent each and every commercial and purebred breeder in Canada over the past fall and year.” —Brian Good “We need to get our purebred breeders to help promote Angus tags to their bull customers. The market managers, owners and staff were great to work with. “Price wise, our Angus Blacks and Reds continue to top most sales and weight classes. “Angus is the only breed to put personnel at the markets, and the market staff are glad to see you come. “I enjoyed the run this fall.” —Ken Cox “Again this year I have enjoyed attending sales on behalf of the Canadian Angus Association. For those sales that I could not attend, I tried to have an Angus member or Manitoba Director attend in my place. If that was not possible I phoned the auction mart to let them know, and wished them the best with their sale. All auction marts are very appreciative of our efforts to attend and supply coffee. It is important to

remember that no other breeds do this on a regular basis, and the buyers and the auction mart operators do notice the fact. “As always, breeders need to be very selective on the bulls they offer for sale to keep the quality of the calves hitting the market strong.” —Blair McRae “The fall run saw many groups of exceptional calves go through the sale rings in BC. The Angus influence calves were in the majority and sold at market or higher prices; the quality was definitely there. Every auction yard from Dawson Creek to OK Falls supported the Angus Influence sales with great producer participation. Both red and black genetics were well represented with groups of very uniform calves. The sale yard staff at all locations are to be complimented on their sorting and efficient cattle handling. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the tremendous buyer support that we received; every sale had a great complement of buyers. “The BC Angus Association gave away six Carhart coats again this year, one at each sale, to a producer that presented Angus influence calves with the Angus RFID button in its ear. Congratulations to the winners. We are pleased to have them wearing a BC Angus coat. As fieldman I was able to attend Vanderhoof, Williams Lake, Kamloops and OK Falls. Thanks to Ken Cox and Bob Prestage for being at Dawson Creek and Lance Savage for covering the Valley Auction sale in Armstrong. The challenge is to get more producers to use Angus tags. “I look forward to the bull sales next spring, after all that is where it all starts.” —Jack Brown Angus World

“There were three Angus Influence feeder calf sales in Quebec in 2009 managed by the Quebec Feeder Calf Sales Circuit. At Reseau Encan St.Hyacinthe, QC auction on Thursday 24 September 2009, in my opinion the Angus influence feeder calves sold were of excellent quality. At Reseau Encan St. Isidore auction on Thursday 2 October 2009, one group of ATQ Angus steer calves and Angus influence feeders (Angus X Charolais and Angus X Simmental), weighing an average of 600–700 lbs with excellent conformation topped the sale. At Encan Sawyerville, QC Inc. auction on Thursday 8 October 2009 all Angus Influence feeder calves at this sale were of very high quality. High quality Angus steers continually sold above the average. “The new ATQ Angus tag in Quebec is now a lime green colour and became available to Quebec beef producers as of 15 December 2009.” —Wayne Gallup “Ontario experienced a colder and wetter than normal year. Heat units were off 200–300. The result was that harvests were late and fewer cattle made it to the sales. “Still, cattle that were vaccinated, age verified and bunk-adjusted were paid a premium. Keady was the best sale, but we also fared well at Cookstown and Woodville. “In my opinion the key was the Angus tag program.” —John Duivenvoorden

Angus Breeders Use DNA Technology to Insure That Commercial Producers Can Buy Angus Sires and Angus Replacement Heifers with Confidence When you buy a car, you want to know what’s on the outside, what features are on the dashboard, but you also want to know what’s under the hood. Unless you’re a total girl like me, you ask about the engine and the mechanics. Why then would you buy your herd

sire or replacement heifers solely based upon the features on the outside? Angus breeders know that buyers want to know what’s under the hood too. These breeders are applying DNA technology that is validated on Angus animals to make sure that buyers know what they are getting on the outside and in. New DNA tests can identify if an animal carries genes that cause Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalous (NH) and Osteopetrosis (OS). These genetic defects are present in Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Holstein, and several other beef breeds. Breeding two carriers can result in affected calves, and because these defects are fatal, this greatly affects your bottom line, and is therefore something to be avoided. How can this be avoided? Be sure to look under the hood. Angus breeders have been testing animals with the occurrence of these genetic defects in their pedigrees. The test results are listed on the animal certificates, on the sales catalogues, and on our website. What you need to look for: the test results are abbreviated wherever they are posted. AMC means that

animal has been tested for the gene that causes AM and has been found a carrier. Conversely, AMF means that the animal has been tested for the gene and does not carry it. The same applies for NH and OS. Angus breeders invest in registration certificates to guarantee the pedigree that you are buying into, performance evaluation programs so that you have a measure of the genetic merit of Angus animals as sires and dams, and now they are investing in DNA profiling their animals for genetic defects so that you can buy Angus sires and replacement heifers with confidence. The commitment that Angus breeders have shown to giving Angus buyers what they ask for makes me proud to work for this association. You do not have to be a member of the association to contact me at 1-888-571-3580, or visit our website, www.cdnangus.ca, for more information on genetic defects. Best Wishes for the New Year; may you buy well, breed well, and sell well.-Submitted by Kajal Devani

Canadian Angus Association - Breed Development

Improve your Bottom Line with Angus Tags In tougher times, producers everywhere need to ask themselves hard questions in regards to the management of their operations. Every decision made affects the bottom line; not necessarily right away but somewhere it all catches up. Costs need to be weighed against the value and returns offered by specific products and services. Every bovine animal in Canada needs to be identified by a Canadian Cattle Identification Agency approved RFID tag. It has become a fixed cost when raising cattle in this country but options exist to add extra value. The Canadian Angus Certification Program adds value to your CCIA tag with no extra effort on your part. Angus tags are CCIA compliant and are the only tag required for national identification. They are available to both commercial producers and purebred breeders. Animals only need to have 50% Angus genetics; progeny of one registered Angus parent qualify for the tag. CACP tag prices are competitive right across the country at $73 Page 94

per bag of 25 RFID tags and are delivered right to your mailbox. Management tags and taggers are also available. Once animals are tagged with an Angus tag, doors are opened to assist you in marketing your calves. The Canadian Angus Association through CACP offers tools to help you maximize your returns. Age verification is now mandatory in Alberta and we strongly encourage you to age verify your calves no matter where you live. The Canadian Angus Association offers free third-party age verification services for Angus tagged cattle. This service is offered to all producers who use Angus tags. While we don’t offer any added prestige by having the Association do this on your behalf, having us do the work instead of you frees up your valuable time for other important things. The Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program is putting buyers and sellers together for the benefit of all parties involved. An overwhelming response to the program since its launch should be enough proof that the benefits are only going to grow from here. The Canadian Angus Association is the first beef breed involved with the Beef InfoXchange System which will be launched this year. This program will be a valuable management tool for all producers and up-to-date information will be available on the Canadian Angus Association’s website. The Association also offers CACP Feeder Sales each fall in auction markets from coast to coast. As the buzz continues to grow around the Angus name more and more buyers are utilizing these tools to find cattle that meet their orders. The Angus tag guarantees buyers that the cattle are Angus based on genetic composition not hide Angus World

colour. That means that our purebred cattle will always be in demand. More demand for Angus beef means more demand for Angus tagged cattle, which ultimately means more demand for purebred Angus animals. Even purebred breeders need to ask themselves if they can afford to not get behind a program with these kinds of benefits. All members of the Canadian Angus Association are eligible to purchase CACP tags. Programs such as these are in place to benefit the members and are created by ideas from the membership. Why not show pride in your breed and your Association by supporting our collective efforts? All producers who own Angus bulls are also eligible to order CACP tags. Once a bull is bought and transferred into your ownership you are considered a commercial producer in the Canadian Angus Association and become a part of the Angus family. As soon as a pedigree is transferred into your name you are pre-approved to purchase Angus tags. Complete records are kept at the Association and your member identification number or the name listed as the owner of the animal is all that is required to complete a tag purchase. Association staff and the field representatives on the road are available to answer any questions you may have. These resources are available to assist you. These programs exist to benefit the producers and the breed. As members and commercial producers your feedback on the Angus tag program and any of the programs administered by the Canadian Angus Association are always welcome. We encourage you to share your thoughts and experiences both good and bad. Cheryl Hazenberg, CACP Coordinator

Canadian Angus Association - Breed Development Helping Commercial Cattlemen Achieve Value Angus beef is recognized as premium, quality beef and is desired for its tenderness, marbling and flavour. In Canada, beef is promoted under several product names using “Angus” as an indicator of quality. At every level from producer through consumer, some have questioned the validity of Angus beef products in the marketplace, questioning if it really is Angus and if it really is Canadian. To protect the reputation of the Angus name, the Canadian Angus Association created Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed. There are two main pillars to the program. First, we want to add value to the commercial Angus cattle that are identified and tagged so feeders and packers can source and identify Angus genetics. Our second pillar is a desire to promote and support the use of quality Canadian Angus beef in the Canadian marketplace. Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed is based on the Canadian Angus Certification Program (CACP or Angus tag program) which guarantees

cattle have minimum 50% Angus genetics. Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed offers age verified, source verified, premise identified Angus cattle as well as the support and endorsement of the Canadian Angus Association, its 3,000 purebred members and 15,000 commercial producers. Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed is designed to increase marketing opportunities for Angus tagged cattle and increase profitability for Angus producers. Angus producers in Canada will enjoy increased marketing opportunities and increased access to markets. Consumers will gain increased access to Angus beef through better identification of Angus beef at the consumer level. Canadian Angus Association Chief Executive Officer Doug Fee says, “Every packer in Canada has at least one branded Angus beef product and needs identified Angus genetics for their program. We need everyone using tags and age verifying their calves to help them grow their programs and continue to grow the demand for Angus feeders. We have sponsored feeder calf

sales for several years but now have partners in the value chain committed to increasing their use of Angus tagged and age verified animals.” Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed is far more than a branded Angus beef program. Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed offers existing Angus beef programs the support of the Canadian Angus Association, its 3,000 purebred members and 15,000 commercial producers for Angus beef products and programs that use Canadian Angus beef. No other breed can verify genetics in this way, and no one else in Canada is in a position to offer this type of program. It is an industry first and unique to Angus. For more information on Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed, including a list of retail locations to purchase Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed beef products, visit www.rancherendorsed.com.
