One of the history making events of the fall would be the opening of the first Angus member owned office building. is event was attended by many breeders and industry personalities. e building is state of the art, spacious and well equipped to base our association out of for years to come. If you are in the Calgary area, it would be worth your time to stop and have a tour. e staff is very proud of it and would be more than happy to show you around.

It has been a very active fall in the Angus business. From the viewpoint of sales, some have been started that will become annual events, others were dispersal sales which seen the end of an era for some operations. All in all, there were a lot of cattle traded. 2013 also seen a good export trade of Angus as well as many other breeds. Canada has great breeding stock and it is being recognized by countries that are wanting to establish or expand their beef industry. We have some very astute export firms in Canada, it would be wise to develop a relationship with these people as they market a good deal of livestock internationally. Looking forward to the Spring Bull Sales, there seems to be a continuing demand for quality Angus bull power. If one can base a forecast for the spring on the fall bull sales, they will be very strong. See you down the road!

Official Opening of Angus Central After three years of planning and preparation, the Canadian Angus Association (CAA) officially opened their first member - owned national headquarters, Angus Central. While the Association moved to many provinces, Angus Central, located just north of Calgary, is the first building owned by the Association. More than 200 Angus members, vendors to the Association and industry partners were in attendance as the doors opened to this exciting new building. An official ribbon cutting by the CAA Board of Directors was a highlight. All past presidents in attendance also shared a special photo representing the historical development of the breed coupled with their futuristic vision of maintaining the Association in a financial situation to purchase such a property. “One of the policies that the Boards before us established was a fund for rainy days or a building,” said David Bolduc, past president of the CAA. “I think those people deserve most of the credit for this building we now have today. My board purchased the land for Angus Central, but without that initial governance policy to set that money aside, we wouldn’t be opening this today. It’s easy to have a vision of the future when you are standing on the shoulders’ of titans.”

Junior members along with families representing more than 100 years of raising Angus cattle were present representing provinces coast to coast. The new showcase of Angus history featured years of artifacts which make up the breed’s past, including letters from the Queen Mother, certificate seals decades old, herd books from more than 100 years ago, and much more. Current CAA President Kevin Blair summarized the future of the Angus breed as being all about the youth. He asked those in attendance “Who is going to back fill behind the older generation as they retire in the next five to 10 years?” “I want us to embrace and encourage our youth by supporting them financially and mentally,” said Blair. “So, here’s to our future. Welcome to Angus Central.” The Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF) was established in 1992 under the presidency of Bill Jackson. Through his leadership, Doug Fee, past CAA CEO and current CAF chairman, credits the board for creating the charitable arm of the Association. “We have an opportunity to celebrate the history and foundation of the Angus breed in Canada and now we have a centre in which to do so,” said Fee.

Winter Edition 2013/14 *

The CAF launched three new initiatives during the official opening to assist in financially building a stronger Foundation. Angus Roots includes an iron tree with leaves engraved with donors’ names. The Hall of Honour and The Breeders’ Choice feature silhouettes of people and animals to recognize highly respected breed builders or loved ones and standouts, respectively. More than $14,000 was raised during the official opening. “We have created membership equity through this building where in the past rent has been a significant portion of our budget,” said Rob Smith, CAA CEO. “I want to summarize the official opening in two words — home run.” The Canadian Angus Association is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization. The Association represents 3,000 members across Canada for the purposes of registering and recording the pedigrees of purebred Angus cattle in the closed Herd Book and promoting the breed across Canada. The member approved mandate is to maintain breed registry, breed purity and provide services that enhance the growth and position of the Angus breed. CAB grows as Canadians take larger role By Rosie Templeton, Certified Angus Beef LLC

C E R T I F I E D A N G U S B E E F

Record growth in Canada for a brand owned and operated by producers—and serving all Canadians who use Angus genetics—spells continuing opportunity not hampered by various trade issues. The Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand has been sold in Canada for more than 30 years, but since the first production began here in licensed Alberta plants 14 years ago, those sales have trended higher, tripling in the last 10 years (see graph). The 2013 fiscal year saw CAB overall sales reach a seventh consecutive record high, 865 million pounds. The Canadian net total of 42 million pounds, almost 40 percent of CAB’s international market, represents the ninth consecutive annual increase. “I attribute a lot of that to strong retail growth,” said Emily DePompei, the brand’s assistant director of international marketing. Licensed retail volume grew by 25 percent while food service volume increased by 11 percent. In April 2012, Real Canadian Superstore signed on to a licensee partnership with CAB and quickly established the brand with its customers. Superstore has been a large part of 2013 growth and will likely continue that with more than 100 stores nationwide, DePompei said. Total CAB business in Canada is up by more than 10 percent from the last fiscal year that ended

September 30. What’s more, 2013 was the first time since 2005 that Canadians produced and sold more CAB product sold than U.S.-produced and sold in Canada. Another way of looking at it: nearly 10,000 more Angus-type cattle qualified for the brand in Canada in fiscal 2013, up 26 percent. Still, that accounts for only about half of sales, as some 21 million pounds must come in from the U.S. to meet demand. If all of that production came from Canada, it could mean premiums paid on more than another 100,000 Angus cattle. CAB acceptance rates (the share of evaluated black-hided cattle that qualify) have increased over the years and accelerated in the past five years to near 20 percent. DePompei said increased supply from Canadian producers fits with the drive among processors to sell more of each branded carcass under the premium label. “We tend to do a good job selling the middle meat items in Canada,” she said, “but we need more end meat and especially grind sales to help pull more product from each carcass into a CAB box.” As sales grow, so does every aspect of the business from the end product to premiums in cattle sales to packers. The number of licensed CAB partners in retail and foodservice increased by more than 15 percent, reaching 1,524 total partners by the year’s end. With the 2014 fiscal year beginning in October, CAB has already seen promising numbers, DePompei said. The first two months show a 6.8-percent increase, about half a million pounds, above the same period last year. “We’re producing a lot more of our CAB in Canada,” DePompei said. “The big growth in 2013 is on track to continue in every sector of the country’s beef industry.”

Winter Edition 2013/14 *

Four CAB foodservice and retail partners based in Canada were honoured at the 2013 Certified Angus Beef ® Annual Conference in September in Palm Desert, Calif. Real Canadian Superstore was named the Retail Rising Star not long after its one-year anniversary of becoming a CAB licensed partner. “They have executed a full-court press with aggressive featuring, in-store displays and a lot of meat department training and internal incentives,” said Emily DePompei, assistant director of international marketing for CAB. “That has shown in a very strong first year selling the brand.” The International Distributor Marketer of the Year is Macgregors Meat & Seafood of Toronto. DePompei credits a recent reinvigoration of internal training along with a 22-year history of CAB partnership for this distributor’s success. The Macgregors team recently spent a day with

CAB staff at a southern Ontario ranch learning about Angus beef production, she noted. Recognized for the top honour in business practices and marketing was GFS Montreal with the Commitment to Integrity award. “They do a fantastic job with brand assurance,” DePompei said. “They do a great job of selling, educating their end users, and targeting the right people in the first place.” And CAB, which does business in 45 countries around the world, singled out the Alberta-based Earls Restaurants Ltd. for International Restaurant Chain Marketer of the Year. Earls continues to expand on already-significant CAB sales volume with creative promotions and new markets, DePompei said.

Canadian Beef Breeds Council

The end of one year and beginning of a new year are always a great time to reflect, recharge, and reorganize. As calving season begins and the driving the feed wagon is part of the daily routine, you will have lots of opportunity to do this. I am not going to tell you what type of bull to use or what you should select for, this is your opportunity to made decisions that best suit your operation. I do want to express how important the seedstock industry is and that your decisions do matter. They matter for the success of your farm but also for the success of the entire industry. The selection practises used by purebred producers (of all breeds) have implications in every sector of the cattle and beef industry. Genetics affect the commercial cow calf operator, they affect the profitability of feedlots, and they

definitely affect the quality of the meat that we market domestically and around the world. Canada prides itself as being a producer of a high quality product based on our leading edge genetics. We need to ensure that we maintain this genetic advantage. This can be done through the utilization of all the tools available. This does mean the use of genomic tests and the EPDs produced by the breed associations, but there are other tools available such as on farm cattle management programs that allow breeders to track animal information. This information allows breeders to develop systems that allow them to make more informed decisions regarding their herd that will hopefully translate into better cattle and more profit. It is obviously more complicated than what I have described but it is a starting point. As breeders you need to make decisions that are in the best interest of your operation and capturing and utilizing the information about your herd will help you reach your goals. Throughout this fall we have hosted a number of international guests representing several countries from different regions of the world. They are always complimentary of the quality of the cattle and the hospitality shown to them by the breeders. This is

very important to the development of these markets and the creation of opportunities for Canadian cattle and genetics. International relations regarding agricultural products can be difficult at the best of times. Logistical challenges, health protocols, funding, export certificates and others often becomes the battleground for other consumer goods. Maintaining good relations with international guests who have taken time to visit our country is critical to overcoming these challenges, as they are often our best spokespeople in their respective countries. We intend to continue working with livestock exporters, researchers and breed associations to create opportunities for Canadian beef cattle and genetics that will assist in adding value to your operation. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our efforts, as always feel free to contact me at the CBBC office. Submitted by Michael Latimer CBBC Executive Director

Junior Angus Ambassador Message

This report here might easily be the most exciting one I get to write as Ambassador, between the World Forum in New Zealand, a trip over to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, western fall shows and the official opening of the CAA office I believe that this fall will be the most memorable part of my Ambassador term. On October 8th the 12 members of the three Canadian youth teams departed our respective airports to eventually all meet up in Los Angeles, we continued onto a very long flight across to Auckland, NZ. Eventually ending up in Rotorua where we would spend seven of our eleven days attending either the “PGG Wrightson World Angus Forum, Youth Programme and Heifer Auction” or bits and pieces

of the Forum itself. The Forum was comprised of speakers, presentations and trade show with no live cattle portion. I understand that our Canadian Delegation experienced tremendous hospitality and cattle viewing throughout the pre and post tours, this was separate from the youth competition. The competition was developed for teams of four to work together in preparing 4 heifers per team for sale at the completion of the competition, along with several Ag related challenges and an Agri-nightmare race. We did it all from building fence to hanging gates, spreading fertilizer, cutting quarters of beef to playing basketball with excavators. There were 10 teams competing in each of the above, 3 Kiwi, 3 Australian, 3 Canadian and 1 from the UK. Two of the most special moments at the conclusion of the Forum include Canadian teams being placed 1st and 2nd overall as well as attending the black tie “150 year” gala. It was there that we witnessed the Kiwi’s doing the Haka while the Scottish played the bag pipe’s to represent the arrival of Aberdeen Angus from Scotland to New Zealand 150 years ago. When we left Rotorua we began a four day journey across the

southern portion of the north island, throughout the post tour we visited three very notable Angus operations, (Ranui, Merchinston and Atahua) and took in some recreational events such as white water rafting, a ropes course and a hostel in the middle of nowhere! To sum up what we seen and experienced, I would explain it as “great people and hospitality that live in a beautiful country and raise some of the most functional and sound cattle to be found anywhere”. The cattle are mostly grass fed and many graze in very unforgiving country. This fall I also attended the Royal, Farmfair and Agribition, the three events combined formed as a reminder that we are certainly in a better place as an industry than where we have been in the past and that we are involved in a well respected breed. For myself and my peers that are pursuing a role within the cattle industry I strongly suggest that opportunity is at our forefront. All the best in 2014!

Alberta Angus Association Message As one year winds down in BC, we have a chance to reflect on 2013. In general, I think it was a good year. We all had a good run in BC. Cattle prices were up. Attendance at shows have been up. There is optimism in the industry that we haven’t seen in along time in BC.

Tom de Waal President - BC Angus Association

We have just wrapped up a very successful National Angus Show at Farmfair in November. It was impressive to see such a large number of international delegates attending the show. And what a great show they did see, with 1100 head in the barn, of which 121 were Red Angus and 117 Black Angus. Then on Super Saturday, what a fantastic testament to Angus genetics and the breeders as they slapped the champion female and champion bull, both Angus. Hear us roar! (As Katy Perry would say) We can all be very proud of our new Angus Central office. A building that took many years, CAA presidents, board members and visions to make it a reality. I recommend anyone that is in the area to stop in and visit our Angus Central building.

I had the opportunity to attend several dispersal sales and production sales this fall. Those with the dispersal were having very mixed feelings. Thou they felt it was time to retire, most were sadden to leave the industry they have grown to love so well. Optimism from the buyers is high, with a positive look on the calf market and breeders excited about the genetics available. The 2014 calving season is just around the corner and I am sure we are all waiting in anticipation to see how the decisions we made in the spring will turn out. In the mean time wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. Hope to see you down the road.

you also needs to be said to the show sponsors, without your support the biggest show in the nation would not be so big! Thank you must go out to all the Angus exhibitors whether you were in the show barn, bull pen alley, the new Yards or the commercial cattle show, you are the people that keep Angus cattle forefront and in the public eye. As a Saskatchewan Association we annually present an award to a Commercial producer of the Year at Agribition and for 2013 I was honored to present that award to the Miles Anderson family of Fir Mountain, SK. This operation is truly a very worthy recipient whose family has been using Angus cattle for forty years now - watch for their story in the up coming issue of the Angus Edge. I was also pleased to present our Honorary Saskatchewan President award to Mr. John Willmott of Pense, SK. John has put countless hours of volunteer time into the promotion of Angus cattle in Saskatchewan for many years. Congratulations and thank you John! As for what is ahead on the Saskatchewan agenda, we would love to have more breeders and industry

people in attendance at our AGM that will be held in Saskatoon in conjunction with the Beef Industry Conference on January 24 so make some plans to join us for the meeting and give the new board your input for the Association going forward! The board is also in the planning stages for the Canadian Angus Convention and Rancher Endorsed Day which our province will be hosting in Moose Jaw June 4-8, watch for more details coming soon and please make plans to come to Moose Jaw for a very informative and enjoyable event. We are producing a new breeder directory to be ready for this event so please don’t miss out and get your operation listed applications on are available in our newsletter, on our web-site or by contacting the office. On behalf of the Saskatchewan Angus board I wish everyone well in the new year and hope everyone has great luck with their new calf crop and marketing those bulls... and surely this winter cannot be as long as last!!!

Saskatchewan Angus Association Message

Hello from Saskatchewan!! I hope everyone got their long list of jobs that needed to get done this fall DONE and have settled into the winter routine by now! Since my last report we have put Agribition 2013 into the history books, with numbers down in the Angus shows but maybe not down as many as in some of the other breeds. Quality was again certainly deep in the show and sales and both show and sales were received very well. Thank you needs to go out to all the volunteers who play a part in making this show happen - without you people I don’t know how it would work! Thank

We have a lot of things that are starting to happen going forward that I will be happy to share as we progress. We are excitedly anticipating the new calf crops and upcoming Bull Sale season. At this time of year, we once again must ponder and reflect on the blessings bestowed on us. May you have a wonderful year ahead.

Manitoba Angus Association Message

As I write this, Christmas will soon be upon us. I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2014.

After a trying fall harvest, farmers got their crops in the bins with record yields and there were real strong calf prices. It’s been a great year for the Manitoba Angus Association with a strong turnout for our summer show that was held in the pen format. All indications are that next year’s show will be even bigger. Our fall gold show was held at the Manitoba Livestock Expo on Nov 1st with another strong turnout of cattle and a good crowd in attendance. The 25th annual Keystone Klassic sale was held on December 7th in Brandon and proved to be a great opportunity to purchase quality Red and Black Angus Females. There was a strong junior presence at the sale looking for a female to show at next year’s Junior Showdown which will be held next July in Virden,

Manitoba. It promises to be a great event and I encourage all who are able to attend. We will be wrapping up the year at our annual meeting in Brandon, MB on January 4, 2014. I encourage all members to attend and be a part of the Manitoba Angus Association as we are always looking for help, Again, all the best to everyone for 2014. See you down the road. Dallas Johnston President, Manitoba Angus Association

Ontario Angus Association Message Greetings from Ontario as 2013 winds to and an end, winter seems to be coming in with lots of snow. The fall sale season in Ontario has wrapped up with many successful sales held. We have just completed a very successful Gold show at the Royal, thanks to all exhibitors and volunteers to make the show a success. There was a very good representation of Angus at the junior heifer show with Angus having the largest number of entries by breed. Hope we can continue to grow our junior organization in Ontario. There has been a good demand for Angus genetics at the fall sales. The annual futurity sale and draw was held in December.

Many of our clubs are holding their annual meetings in the New Year. The Ontario Angus annual meeting is set for Jan 25/13 hosted by the Ottawa Valley Club. I hope many breeders will be able to attend. All the best to breeders in the New Year, hope everyone has good luck calving. Respectfully submitted Allan Hargrave President, Ontario Angus Association

Quebec Angus Association Message

2013 has been a fabulous year for the Angus industry in Quebec and across Canada. Lots of feed, lush pastures and high prices.

In Quebec we had three new Directors elected in February and I was honored to be elected President. I have tried to arrange events in Quebec that all members would enjoy and participate in such as the Picnic in July and the Female Sale at the end of September. Both events were successful and well attended. The next event is the Annual General Meeting on February 9th, 2014 and we are hoping for a good attendance. The term of President is a one year term in Quebec and I have enjoyed my term but will not be seeking re-election. I am looking forward to seeing some new faces on the Board. The Angus market in Quebec and across Canada is the best that I have seen it in years. Brian Good agreed with me and he knows all the facts and figures of the Angus industry at all times. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Brian a speedy recovery and a great 60th Birthday. I hope to get together with Brian

in 2014 to celebrate his good health and his old age. The prices at the Green Tag sales in Quebec have been high and steady with many willing buyers. 2014 is just around the corner and I would like to remind Angus breeders to carefully select their bulls for sale. Sometimes it is tempting to sell them all but often that is not a smart move and has future consequences. I am looking forward to the momentous occasion of the opening of Angus Central and will be attending the ceremony on December 11th. I am pleased that the number one breed in North America finally has their own building, an investment in the future. I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a successful, happy and healthy 2014.

Maritime Angus Association Message Greetings from the Maritimes. The annual meeting of the Maritime Angus Association was held in early December in Amherst, NS, with myself elected as President, Wilfred Gilby as Vice President, and Betty Lou Scott remains on as Secretary. Thank you to Trevor Welch for his work as Maritime President the last two years. Trevor is a great asset to our association and we look forward to working with him as the new Director-elect, replacing Jim Colodey on the Canadian Board of Directors. Thank you to Jim for his work on behalf of the Angus breeders in the Maritimes as he finishes up his second term as director. The gold show locations will remain Charlottetown, PE, Sussex, NB and Halifax, NS for 2014. Some exciting news for next year’s show season is there will be a NB futurity at the Sussex Beef Expo, NB. This is in addition to the futurity that takes place at Old Home Week in Charlottetown, PE. This is

great news for the Angus breed in the Maritimes, as the number of producers and interest in exhibiting Angus cattle continues to grow. The PEI Futurity will now be using the Zoetis 50K test, which will be used along with a panel of judges, to determine the final placing. Upcoming we have the Nappan Bull Sale being held April 5th, 2014. There are 33 Angus bulls on test. The test station is using the GrowSafe feeding system. The Annual Field Day will be held June 13th and 14th, 2014 at the Port Elgin exhibition grounds in New Brunswick. Best of luck to breeders in the calving season, remember to use your Angus Green tags! Respectfully Submitted, Julie Mutch President - Maritime Angus Association

Canadian Junior Angus Association

Winter is settling in across the country and the cold winds are bringing all sorts of weather to contend with. Snowstorms have hit hard everywhere it seems heading into the holidays. Despite the weather we are all still hard at work, and the Canadian Junior Angus Association is no exception with scholarships, bursaries and the GOAL Conference all in the works. The CJAA Board is busy planning the 2014 GOAL Conference. It will be held in Calgary, AB from February 15 to 17, 2014. The GOAL Conference is a great opportunity to meet and network with other junior members outside of the show ring. There will be six bursaries provided by the CJAA and the Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF) to assist members with travels costs to the conference. Applications and additional Page 44

Past participants remember that you can win an ipad if you bring a friend to GOAL this year and the CAF will also be sponsoring a $3000 voucher to purchase an Angus Female. All you have to do to be entered to win is be there! The Foundation Legacy scholarship applications are due January 15. The five finalists will be doing interviews and a panel discussion at the GOAL conference and the winners will be announced. These new scholarships provided by the Canadian Angus Foundation will be awarded to three CJAA members at $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000. Investing in future members has been a cornerstone of the Foundation’s endeavors and this scholarship opportunity is their latest contribution. Thank you to the Canadian Angus Foundation and its donors for providing these scholarships. I personally look forward to seeing who has been selected as recipients at GOAL. We are very pleased once again to have had support from Angus breeders with the donation of a heifer that was Dutch auctioned at the Masterpiece Sale during Agribition this year. We greatly appreciate the donation from Double C Red Angus of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. Young Dale Angus of Carievale, SK was the lucky winner of the heifer. Funds raised from the heifer are directed to the Canadian Junior Angus Association Scholarship Program. A big thank you also

goes to Blairs.Ag Cattle Co. who purchased a heifer in the sale and promptly ran her back through, with all money generated going into the Canadian Junior Angus Association and its programs. Positions on the Canadian Junior Angus Board are up for election this spring. The open positions are in the provinces of Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Any juniors interested in representing their province and contributing to the CJAA is encouraged to put their name forward. The deadline for nominations is January 31. These director positions offer a great opportunity to learn new skills like event planning and board governance as well as getting to travel the country and show cattle. Not a bad combination and it also looks great on your resume! Any questions about the positions can be directed to Belinda Wagner office@saskatchewanangus.com or to myself harbeckcattlecompany@gmail.com. It’s never too early to start planning your vacation and cattle show schedule. To help us get through the Canadian winter that's to come, mark your calendars for Showdown. It will be held in Virden, Manitoba from July 17 to 19, 2014. All the best for the holiday season and good luck in the upcoming calving season. Michael Hargrave President , Canadian Junior Angus Association
