Sometimes you have to hit your thumb with the hammer to figure out it actually hurts! After a year off from selling year old bulls, we are back in full force ableit with smaller numbers of bulls. Our experiment showed mixed results in 2016... so I have shifted gears and am now gaining cruising speed once again.

We are bringing to town for you a strong set of bulls built for the heifer pen and bulls that will blow the springs out of the scale platform at weaning time!. Please note - the weights shown in this catalogue are ACTUAL weights, Not ADJUSTED! There is not a single customer of mine in the commercial business that sells their calves at Fort Macleod in the fall on “Adjusted Weights”! It’s called “pay weight” and that’s what pays the bills.

The Pen Show starts at 1:00 on Thrusday, March 30th with the Bull Sale to follow and then the Little Royal Heifer Sale will follow the Bull Sale. Roger owns and operates DRI Embryo Transplants Ltd. north of Crossfield, Alberta. He is no stranger to the cow business as he was involved in the Hereford business for years. He has shown cattle all over North America, judged cattle all over North America and flushed cattle all over the world! I remember showing under Roer a couple times – once at the Calgary Stampede in 1991... and he gave me a really good day, too! The other time he was on the panel of 5 judging the Supreme Show at Agribition and he made a speech which had a very lasting impression on me. Roger is also no stranger to the Little Royal as he has been a major buyer in the past in the Little Royal as well as the “No Surprises” Sale in December. I know I can speak for all my consignors in the 2017 Little Royal Pen Show this year when I say I am very much anticipating hearing his thoughts on the mic! Come, watch the Pen Show and listen to what a very astute and knowledgeable cattleman has to say!

ASHTYN DUNCAN moved to Pincher Creek in middle school and quickly became involved in the Horse 4H Club. She also has a herd of small animals which led her to volunteering many hours in high school at the Pincher Creek Veterinary Clinic. Ashtyn is currently enrolled in her 1st year at the University of Calgary.

MErriCK STAUFFEr grew up North of Pincher Station. He was involved in the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purebred Black Angus program and with their commercial cattle, feedlot, and farming operations. Merrick spent 6 years in the Foothills 4H Beef Club with steer and female projects. After graduation he completed a pre-employment program at Lethbridge College and was immediately hired by C&A Industries for a welding apprentice.

CArLY giLMOrE grew up in the Pincher Creek area very involved in 4H and has had horse, sheep, steer and heifer projects. She is currently in her second year of the Agribusiness program at Lakeland College in Vermilion and plans to continue her education next year at the University of Lethbridge and get her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Studies.

In 2016 We Lost Several Influential Members of our Cattle Community.....

KEN HURLBURT

Fort Macleod Auction is a big reason why the cattle industry in Southern Alberta has flourished throughout history. I cherish my memories of Ken for his big beaming smile and love for the cattle industry and its people. One memory of Ken, in particular that I have, was the day I asked him and his son, Brant, if I could resurrect his beloved Little Royal Show once again. I believe he really got behind it and promoted it like only a Hurlburt could. I will miss Ken sitting in the front row at the auction market.

GARY CONRAD

Gary, from LaGlace, Alberta, could tell stories about the old days showing cows with my Uncle Rod and John Sibbald until the cows came home!! My earliest memory of Gary was sitting in a hotel room after a Red Round-up meeting listening to stories with Ken Frazer, Dave Wildman, John Sibbald, Wayne Sibbald, Mike Rodgers and my Dad. I also remember Gary at one of our bull sales marching down the ramp in the bleachers at the auction market to make a speech on a bull... at our bull sale! He was so mad after his talk that he returned to his seat and bought the bull just to prove his point! Also I remember well the wash rack/hospitality room at FMA (where we now serve more beer than wash bulls anymore) where Gary and my dad and uncles washed bulls until the wee hours the night before a bull sale in the ‘70’s. Wow, I’m telling you... if those walls could talk!!!

MIKE RODGERS

Mike Rodgers from Warner, Alberta (formerly from Millarville) was a founding member of the Canadian Dynamite Breeders Group and a true leader in the early years of the formation of the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society. In fact, he was the first president when the very long running and very successful Red Round-up Sale first started. Mike, with his Red Rod prefix in it, had a lot of influence over the years in this wonderful breed of ours.

TRACY JENKINS Tracy was exactly who she wanted to be – a beautiful, devoted wife, a loving mom, grandma, and mother-in-law, and a lover of the ranch life and all the animals that came with it. Her strength and love of life was infectious - she was simply an inspiration to those of us who were lucky enough to know her. A story I’d like to share with everyone on Tracy – On a New Year’s Eve lots of years back we had the Jenkins and Kennedys and Stauffers over for a party. Tracy & Tammy raided the kids’ costume box in the basement and they dressed up as Batwoman and Robin(ette?)! Later that evening with a little more liquid courage(not that anyone in this group ever needs that to be brave) and forthcoming with dirt on someone, Tracey told us of her beach preparations for their upcoming trip to Mexico with her husband, Frank, and the preparations weren’t for her, they were for Frank and it involved a lot of wax …..and a lot of back hair!! Apparently Frank took the kidding better than the waxing! There was a lot of yelling and swearing ….and even a little out of Tracy. Rest in peace, Tracy, we shall miss you!

RetAINeD INteReStS - Brylor Ranch is retaining the right to possibly use a few of the bulls in this 2016 sale. Instead of retaining a 1/3 semen interest in selected lots, we will instead reserve the right to collect 100 straws of semen on any bull in the catalogue at our expense and the buyer’s convenience. Buyer otherwise owns the bull, except in the case of bulls denoted as 1/2 interest lots.

BIDS - Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder A floor price will apply to each animal consigned. DISPUteS - In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

PURchASeR’S RISk - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as the auctioneer declares the animal sold.

ANNoUNcemeNtS - Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the Auction Stand at sale time and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.

We have done lots of work in the purebred industry to market our bulls …. but not so much anymore. To us at Brylor Ranch, moving forward means taking steps to work more closely with you, our faithful commercial customers. We have cut down our mailing list to a bare bones amount of catalogs sent out to that side of the mailing list. What does this mean for you, the ever so important commercial operation? It’s less competion bidding on the front end bulls from the purebred sector.
