I’ve been thinking about this letter to welcome you all to this milestone bull sale for quite awhile now. Thinking about all the hands that have played a part in this bull sale over the years to get us to this point is staggering to say the least. I find myself going back over the years remembering many stories and conversations and events that have taken place inside these historic walls at Fort Macleod Auction. It fills my heart with much pride and a sense of overwhelming achievement... and it certainly makes my eyes well up too! First person I need to recognize is my Uncle Rodney (he’s on the cover holding the very first Calgary Bull Sale Grand Champion Bull that was a Red Angus back in 1971). I thought it only fitting to honor him by putting him on our 50th Annual Bull Sale catalog cover. In fact that was the very first cover for a Red Angus catalog anywhere in Canada! Elsewhere in this catalog is a page out of that very first bull sale too (see page 24). His perseverance and dedication to the breed when he first started showing the country this ‘new’ red colored Angus is admirable to say the least. Where would we be now if he had given up as I am quite certain he took a lot of ribbing from “black” guys back then! Thanks, Uncle Rod, for setting this breed on a very solid road you single handedly paved for us. I have very vivid memories of my dad and uncles washing and clipping the sale bulls in those early years of the ‘70’s at Fort Macleod Auction. I learned a lot of colorful words too... sometimes way into the wee hours of the morning the day before the sale. We spent from 1972 - 1999 selling bulls under the Mackenzie Brothers name. Very important to me, also, is all the sales staff over the years - Ken & Brant Hurlburt, Dennis Ericson, Brian “Bobcat” Marin, Brent Carey and the yardman for years at FMA, George Bourassa. I’d be very remiss not to thank our ad men over the years, Dick Turner and Dave Callaway, for their help. And certainly a big part of doing our catalogues in the early years was my Aunt Reva and now for the last 25 years (+/-) to Sid Leavitt. Much appreciated! We have created a big “Thank You” on page 21, a special 50th Anniversary Buyers Draw for maybe the most integral part of any sale... YOU ... our customers over the last 49 years. Thank you all so very much for supporting us through thick & thin. We’ve all made this event, our bull sale, happen together! Now, lastly and certainly not the least is to my family - Mom & Dad (Edna & Mark). None of us would be here today doing what we love raising and selling Red Angus cattle - if you hadn’t sacrificed so much for our ranch! Your investment (both emotionally and financially) in me and my dreams... well, let’s just say words on a piece of paper in a 50th Anniversary Bull Sale catalog can’t begin to describe my gratitude to you both. Thanks for everything over the years to get us to this point. And to my wife, Sherry... you’ve been a part of this bull sale going on nearly 25 years now... and you’re still here! Holy moley, it’s been quite the journey with you and thanks to you, you’ve kept all this together since we met at the Calgary Bull Sale back in 1997. All of us here at Brylor Ranch want you to come and help us celebrate 50 glorious and wondrous years of supplying bulls to you. We look forward to the next 50 and whatever roads we will travel down. We hope you enjoy this special edition catalog on this very special year! Yours faithfully in the Red Angus Business, Bryan & Sherry Mackenzie

An amazing outcross herd bull that has it all! He is full of meat, mass and moderate frame yet he weighed well over 2600 lbs. mature weight. For a bull with all that, he calves incredibly small birth weights with the most explosive growth I’ve ever seen in this breed!! His first daugters just sold in our Traditon With A Vision last week and averaged over $7000. The high selling bred heifer was, in fact, of his at $12,500. You will like his first sons we have ever offered too. His dam is one exceptionally talented daughter of SAV Final Answer.

A tremendous young Black/Red carrier outcross sire that was lost to our industry way too young! A strong pedigree from the Blacks being sired by Vision Unanimous he carried his extra length of spine and excellent hair. He had a wonderful temperament and absolutely rock solid feet. He just had a daughter sell last fall to top the “Touch of Class” sale at $14,000. I drove all the way to Tilston, Manitoba, this spring to bid on a son of Poker Face at $18,000. We had a $7250 heifer calf in Tradition With a Vision 2020 sale. All of his sons in this bull sale should be considered excellent Heifer Bull Prospects.

Since introducing this amazing herd bull to our commercial bull customers a few springs back, he continues to impress all who have seen him (our bankers included!) and has proven to be a sound investment at $77,500. The #1 Red Angus sire in Canada last spring according to the number of calf registrations, his sons have topped bull sales everywhere and a daughter just brought $11,500 at the Red Roundup. In our Tradition With A Vision Sale on October 24th in Stavely we had eight daughters sell to average $8000. They were well received to say the least. His semen is now in strong demand once again as a package of 50 just sold to average $235/straw. With the set of sons in this bull sale and the two year old daughters we already have in production at Brylor Ranch, I believe the future is extremely bright for a herd bull such as Assassin!

We have lots of this bull’s influence in our herd now so these will be his last sons in volume. He is now at Phil Birnies’ WRAZ Red Angus in Saskatchewan. He sold for $25,000 last spring. His daughters are great young cows doing their jobs very well. Three daughters just sold this fall for a $9000 average. Look at his real Red Angus numbers from the American Red Angus Association, they are awesome! He also has maybe the best feet on a herd bull that we’ve ever bought.

An outcross to our program and a huge performing sire were two of the reasons we purchased this good bull. He was the high seller at Andersons’ in Swan River, MB, two years ago. As a yearling he bred cows at both WRAZ and Brylor and now he serves as Parks’ Senior Herd Sire at RACK. His calves at WRAZ this spring were very performance oriented and had lots of grow and style! Big Shot had an Adj WW of 993 lbs. and Adj YW of 1543 lbs.

FEATURE BLACK/RED ANGUS COMING TWO YEAR OLD BULLS SIRED BY RUSH LAKE Ever since Stauffer bought the Rush Lake sire at Agribition back in 2012 for $73,000 I have wanted to incorporate sons of his genetics into our herd. We infused the Rush Lake bull into one of our best donor cows, Doll 44X. She had two $10,000 sons and a $14,900 heifer in Tradition With A Vision 2017 to Jeff Fraser. In fact she’s a full sister to these three great Black/Red carrier bulls!
The sire to this trio has left his mark of SAR in a huge way. His females are some of the most beautifully made females out there. Rush Lake was also a major herd sire for Badger Creek in Kansas too.
One of these bulls saw a group of our Red cows this past August. I’m looking to produce a Red son to carry on the Rush Lake line of maternal Angus goodness in our herd.

Our first of the May born younger bulls,. 42G is an attractive, athletic son of ‘Navigater’. His dam, 91X, is a member of the Bonita family and has five daughters in our herd. She prduced a $9000 Wander son a few years back
These Poker Face sons are gonna be wildly popular on Sale Day! Outcross blood, low low birth weights and big time style points! Lots of our bulls this year are out of two year old ‘Navigator’ daughters.

Here’s a lot of bull for a mid-May born Red Angus! His genetics will serve you well. His dam came from cousins Ed & Randy Mackenzie’s good cow herd. Great cow family in the Cherok’s.

Very maternal kind of a bull here with Next Step on a Roughrider cow. The Rosette family was one of Dennis Ericson’s good group of cows.

They say time flies when you are having fun and I don’t know any people that have more fun than Bryan and Sherry Mackenzie! Fifty years is no small accomplishment in the seedstock business, the truth is most won’t make it that long. It takes a special dedication and passion that the Mackenzie family possess to make it through 50 years with the ups and downs that come naturally in agriculture. The cattle have to be good, the character of the people has to be better and I think that is the combination that has made Brylor the long term success that it is. As a commercial producer it brings a lot of peace of mind to source your seedstock from people that realize that your success is their success. That’s the way it’s always been at Brylor and I know that’s the way it will be in the future. See you on sale day. Frank Jenkins

WOW! 50 years - what a milestone! Congratulations Bryan & Sherry on your successful Brylor Ranch Program. My Dad and I both had the privilege and honour of working with your family early in the original Mackenzie Red Angus, and you continue to bring superior genetics to the livestock industry. To be a front runner in any business after 50 years is a testament to the quality of your program. I’ve always been proud to call the Mackenzie “Clan” my friends. All the best. Brant Hurlburt

Welcome to all cattlemen and livestock enthusiasts It’s with a great deal of pride that I was asked to write a note in honor of the Brylor Ranch 50th Anniversary Bull Sale. I have had the pleasure of working along side of the Mackenzie family for close to thirty years. Actually many of the successes that I have had in the purebred livestock industry, started with Bryan, we enjoyed countless sales, tours, and family time together over the years. Sometimes we tend to discount the simple things in life. My experiences with the Mackenzie family began many years ago. I was very green and working hard at making contacts within the industry. I had set up a meeting through Bryan, as the Mackenzie Bros. and crew were all at Claresholm Beef Producers weighing and prepping sale bulls. Me, being anxious to make an impression, I thought the crew might need a break and a little energy so I picked up a bag of doughnuts and off I went to the meeting. The next year my great relationship with this great family began..... and it started with a few doughnuts. Sometimes the littlest things can influence our futures more than we can imagine. Congratulations to Brylor Ranch and the Mackenzie family on 50 consecutive bull sales. What a huge accomplishment this is in the purebred industry. Very few people can boast 25 years let alone 50. That tells me one thing, these folks take great pride in what they do and they take an interest in you and your program. A great friend, Mr. Dennis Ericsson, always said this is a people business before it’s the cattle businesses. Here’s a big thank you to Brylor and the Mackenzie family for letting me be a part of your sales team over the years. Congratulations and may your 50th Anniversary Sale be the best ever. Respectfully, Brent W Carey

It takes a tremendous amount of foresight, perseverance, and dedication to be able to host a 50th anniversary sale. The foresight the Mackenzie brothers had back in 1962 to be the first established Red Angus breeders in Canada was quite an undertaking. As the building of their herd continued, their Angus genetics grew. Nine years later, the proof of their commitment to the Angus breed was solidified by exhibiting the Grand Champion Angus Bull at the Calgary Bull Sale in 1971. The following year, they held their first annual sale featuring bulls and females. This was the start of a long history of success and dedication which started back in 1962. Year after year, the perseverance they had — not only for their own operation, but for the Angus breed itself — continued. As their operation grew, so did their families. Mark and Edna soon had their own herd with Lorne and Bryan called Brylor Red Angus. In 2000, Mackenzie bothers and Brylor Ranch continued forward, hosting their own separate sales. Bryan has established himself as one of the top stockman and breeders of Red Angus cattle. “Average” does not even begin to describe the level Bryan and Sherry continue to operate Brylor Ranches. Their cattle are at the forefront of the industry, as they have accumulated numerous championship banners from across North America and year after year their bull sale average is one of the highest in the breed. The drive and attention to detail is certainly evident as Brylor Ranch hosts their 50th bull sale as well as the longest running production sale of the Angus breed in Canada. We congratulate Bryan and Sherry, Mark and Edna, and their families for their success and commitment to the Red Angus breed and for where it is today.
Congratulations, Stauffer Ranches Inc. Stacey & Michel Stauffer and family
Please join us after the sale for dinner & hospitality!
We have been feeding our Brylor bulls at Stauffer Angus Ranch for 20 + years now dating back to the 1998 H bulls. We are making mention of people that have had a hand in making our operation a success over the years in this catalog. Stacey has not only lent his hand in developing our bulls in a very professional manner but the discussions we have shared over Angus cattle have been very informative and rewarding as well! The lifelong friendship we have with Stacey, Michel and their kids is something we are truly blessed with. Thanks for all the help over the years making our bull sale a little bit better each and every time out of the gate. Thanks so very much, The Brylor crew One of the big influences on me at a young age....
When I was growing up kids my age had posters on their walls of hot girls or famous athletes such as Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan or Nolan Ryan - I had bull sale posters with Jim Leachman and his bull sale catalogs everywhere in my room! Jim managed the Red Roundup for several years along with the female sale for the Mackenzie Bros. Jims always had time for me as a young cattleman and I’ll never forget his words to me. It was an honor for us to have Jim judge the very first Little Royal Pen Show back in 2006! Thank you from all of us here at Brylor for all that Mr. Jim Leachman has done for the Red Angus Breed! Bryan & Sherry Mackenzie

LETTERS FROM SOME INFLUENCES ON THIS BULL SALE OVER THE YEARS.... Our 58 years of Red Angus in Canada and at home…
by Mark & Edna Mackenzie. It is important to understand why Red Angus became popular and flourished in Canada. Red Angus is because of a recessive red gene in Black Angus. Black is dominant in all warm-blooded species - including humans. A red angus calf was born into a black herd many centuries ago in Scotland. The man decided to exclude the red calf – probably chopped off its head and ate it for dinner. This happened in many herds until several breeders in the USA determined too many reds were showing up. They did what has happened over the centuries: developed a new breed all red in color. Post war, several breeders came together after collecting red angus animals for decades. There were 5 amongst which was a Canadian football player from Saskatchewan, named George Chiga. He ended up in Oklahoma and had a founding herd of Red Angus. The American Red Angus Association was launched in 1954. They faced a difficult up-hill battle from the established all black American Angus Association. To succeed and gain attention, they decided to develop a program showcasing performance - not done by any other breeds. They concentrated on 4 areas—birth weight, weaning weight, feeding index and adjusted yearling weight, and average daily gain while on feed. Because this was unique, Red Angus was noticed and soon recognized as a leader in animal husbandry. When we started selling Red Angus in Canada, we had to register our animals with the American Red Angus Assoc until 1968 when the Canadian Assoc agreed to open their books and allow us to register our animals with the blacks. Overcoming that hurdle proved invaluable in expanding numbers. The Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society was founded in 1972 by a group of commercial cattlemen from Alberta and one from Saskatchewan, who decided to develop and promote purebred red angus. And—here we are today- registering nearly 50% of all angus cattle. Successful? Yes! There is an old adage: “A cow and sow is all a farmer needs to survive”. Now we have government dishing out millions to the Ag. Industry. The Bank of Canada’s top man says, “It’s going to be a slog.” At the end of September Mark and I took a drive through south eastern B.C. and saw many Red Angus cattle grazing on the open vistas making that now famous “A and W grass fed beef for hamburgers.” It was indeed satisfying to witness the fruits of our endeavors. Without the support and vision of other cattle breeders, their dreams and our efforts would have failed. When Mark and I married in 1965, Red Angus were virtually unknown in Canada. Mark had seen an advertisement in the August 1960 issue of Cattleman’s magazine by Beckton Stock Farm advertising their sale. Keeping that in mind, but not acting, Mark bought the 1st Charolais/ Hereford cross calf at Cardston, AB, in Oct. The Mackenzie’s were so impressed with the growth/performance of this calf that they decided to crossbreed the next year. He was twice the size of the Shorthorn calves! Dad (Rod,Sr.) said, “I don’t care what you boys do, but make sure the cross is red”. The important lesson is that they acted on that ad in the Cattleman’s. Rod Jr. and Don went to Beckton’s sale in 1962 where they purchased 5 head to start a herd. This became the nucleus of Red Angus in Canada.
Page 24
I have always wanted to share this page with my bull sale customers……this is an actual page from the 1st Red Angus bull sale catalog in the history of our breed in this country (Mackenzie Bros 1972 sale) Uncle Rod’s creativity and vision was amazing to me on having the foresight to keep a ½ interest in a bull and still share him with the industry!! What a true leader he must have been in his days that were cut short way to soon. I absolutely loved hearing the stories about him from my Dad, Gary Slezina, Wayne Sibbald, Brian Good, Gary Conrad, Gavin Hamilton and Millie Boake to name a few. I hope in a small way that he can look down from his big ole Ranch up there and have some sort of sense of accomplishment and pride in these last 50 years too. By the way, .the bull in lot 31 that year, Red Mac Larkebelang 24B, ended up being the high selling lot at $4200 to the Elliot’s in Seven Persons, AB.

To the Mackenzie Families Mark & Edna, Bryan & Sherry and family -
Imagine 50 years of Bull Sales - 1970 - 2020. One’s business doesn’t usually last anywhere that long. Congratulations to all because you have just reached another milestone. Bryan Mackenzie is a promoter, a salesman, and a major influence in the Red Angus world not only in Canada but elsewhere as well. Whether it is showing cattle or selling them, everything is always First Class! The sales catalog would be a good example. Getting back to fifty years of sales, I wasn’t at the first one and probably won’t be at the 50th but I was invited to most of the ones in between. Over the years two herd bulls and high sellers purchased by Get-ALong and Brox Stock Farm from Brylor were Banker (1990) and Pasquale (2005). Pasquale would rate as one of the best Red bulls ever purchased by Get-ALong with his last four daughters being bought by Royal Rock Angus, Gordon King of Kitscoty, Alberta, in 2016. There was a good reason they topped a lot of sales - they were darn good! The bulls on offer this year will be the pick of the pen as everything from the group of two year olds (33 to exact) have left the pen since last year’s sale. They definitely are not leftovers but have been specifically saved for this event. Remember these two year olds will handle more heifers and cows than a yearling will. Good two year olds are very hard to find – take advantage of this opportunity on December 4th. One yearling is offered and that is the “Pick of a Flush” or group of transplant calves. If you are needing a herd bull, come to Fort Macleod as I know you can find him there.

In July of 2020 we all lost a very important man in our Southern Alberta Agriculture community. Pete was the driving force behind the great cowherd at East Cardston Colony. His love for the cattle business shown through from the front row at Fort Macleod Auction at many an event held there. I got to know Pete personally through numerous good visits with him at his home, our bull sales over the years and the Little Royal Pen Shows (one of his favorites) and many tours of the East Cardston cowherd. Pete will always have a special place in our hearts here at Brylor Ranch. RIP our friend!
