Sale Time: 1:00 pm Heartland Livestock Centre

Our Heritage is so valuable yet is seems many memories are buried along with those who made them not that long ago. I was talking to an old friend and bull customer, Kurt Thierman, the other day and my memory was jogged about a picture I took in an old barn that happened to be on his property. The picture became the inspiration to a poem, hope you enjoy it . . . it may even jog your memory of days gone by. Thanks Kurt

Steps by Bryce Burnett

These are the steps to nowhere, Where no one ever goes These are the steps of days gone by, The steps our pioneers bravely chose.

These are the steps the workers climbed to pile hay the farm did grow. They are the steps the farmer scaled, then fed his livestock down below.

These are the steps the wife peered up, calling kids get down from there. These are the steps the collie bounded up and steps the daughter used as a chair.

These are the steps that Grandpa climbed to survey the property from the loft. And steps that Grandma struggled up, kittens cradled in her apron soft.

These are the steps the children clamoured up to romp and play in the hay. Then they were the steps grandchildren climbed to explore the loft one day. Now they are the steps to nowhere, where no one ever goes. Yes, they are the steps of days gone by, an era that’s come but to a close.

Cattle will be ready for viewing Saturday morning, then join us for a complimentary Beef-on-a-Bun before the Sale. Drop by to view the sale offering at the Ranch anytime.

This article was brought to my attention by Hugh Henry of the Swift Current Museum. It was placed in the “Sun” Newspaper years ago. I was aware of it but revealing it to me now sparked a realization of our heritage and how the destiny of our fore fathers has a bearing on our very existence and livelihood Thanks Hugh. I’ve been told my Grandfather Walter was proud of his Scottish heritage, as was my father David and so it is with I. Grandpa Walter was a stockman, especially proud of his Clydesdale horses, it has been documented that he took Grand Champion at Frontier Days, Swift Current with his Clydesdale in 1920. Grandfather Walter tended to his stock and he kept in practice by the herding of Grandma Jane’s flock of turkeys with his black border collie dog “Nigger”. Grandma kept turkeys every year - her enterprise which put Christmas dinner on the table of most neighbours in the area. My Grandfather died before my existence and it was his dog - Nigger - who remained by his side when Grandpa was found by my father collapsed from a heart attack on the road to Yellow Lake. Does the destiny of one man shape the destiny of his progeny to follow? As one man’s life fades away does it pave a path to futures unknown? As we measure a man, can there be a prouder moment than the realization of knowing that the kindness in a man’s heart is revealed by the faithfullness of his dog. Nigger lost his best friend.

The Measure of a Man

How is it that we measure a man, evaluate what his life is worth? How do we define success, his life’s destiny from a humble birth?

by Bryce Burnett

Do we measure a man by religious beliefs and by what his tongue does say? Maybe it’s by his work ethics and how he spends his day.

Do we measure a man by his apparel in the cut of the clothes he wears Or by the grudge he carries on his shoulders and the weight of the cross he bears. Is success measured by the house he lives in or by the truck he drives? Or is it by the label of the Scotch he drinks or that he’s had five wives. Do we measure a man by the money he makes and how he flashes his diamond ring? Or do we measure him by the size of his herd or the size of another thing.

Yes there’s many a way to measure a man and by the time on earth he does log. But to my way of thinking lots is revealed about a man by the way that he treats his dog.

Howdy Folks We’re proud to bring you yet one more sale of Burnett quality breeding stock. Whether it is a bull or female breeding stock you desire we can help you reach your goals. We have strived to maintain a productive herd through A.I. and natural breeding. That is what we have successfully done in the Tarentaise breed and as you look through our Angus bull selection, it is evident to see the direction, style and progress in our breeding program. We offer an excellent set of stylish, easy fleshing bulls, with low birth weight status, partially attributed to stacked pedigrees. Selection for correct feet and legs, strong user friendly udders, and moderate easy fleshing is the norm in our breeding program - why should it not be that’s what commercial cattlemen demand. Thanks for your faith in our breeding program enjoy the sale. As Always Bryce

23W is put together smooth and right. His maternal side portrays the Miller Wilson bloodlines of Essence - famous in it’s own right. Watch for him - you’ll like his style.

Calving Ease We have strived to select cattle and develop a breeding program which is in harmony with ease of calving. Although many associate calving ease with birth weight as do we to a degree, there are other factors that come into play. I have often thought that birth weights should be like buying t-shirts, small, medium, large and X-large. (don’t want to go there) Consideration should also be placed on genetic makeup (bloodlines) and environmental and management practices. Most bulls we use (natural or AI) have light to moderate birth

weights. You will find a lot of the bulls pedigrees stacked for lower birth weights and therefore should be compatable for breeding heifers. Examples - Duramax (74lbs), Fahren 21X (68lbs), Lookout (74lbs), In Focus (77lbs) For your convenience we have rated each bull based on information we have of birth weight, pedigree, gestation period and other influences. *** - Recommended for moderate sized first calf heifers ** - Recommended for heifers with supervision and moderate sized cows *- Recommended for moderate to larger sized cows.

Breeders Program: A little inside as the Breeding Program at the Burnett Ranch should reveal our goals as to what we expect of our cattle. As we analyze our cattle, easy fleshing, moderate sized females with strong feet and legs and correct udder structure is common place. We have no time for long ski hooves and big or poorly structured udders. We have purchased replacement heifers for some purebred breeders that are culled from our herd by the time they are four years old because of structural problems. Our cows must be functional to stay on the Ranch. They travel summer and winter. Cows are wintered 1 1/2 miles for the home site where they travel daily from the bedding coulee to feeding pastures and spring fed water holes. It is the norm for our cows to walk a mile every day during winter months. The mature cows (after 1 calf) calve on one quarter section of native pasture in the wintering field, starting the last week of March with April 1 - 7 being the target dates. Heifers are calved in February so they are retained by the Homestead site for supervision during colder weather. We have been synchronizing and A.I. breeding our cattle yearly, and have used A.I. every year for the last 35 plus years. Our breeding program is dominated by lower birth weight, moderate framed bulls, the kind that produce cows that will work under our management and in the harsh environment conducive to Southwest Saskatchewan.
