Crowfoot Cattle Co. Red & Black Angus Bull Sale 2010

WelCome to our 18th annual sale!! Instead of the usual “Our cattle are better” letter, here is some research I did on global food and water. This might encourage you to stay in, get in, or expand a beef production business while the time is right. A shift in global dietary patterns is taking place; one that will have far-reaching implications for international trade, the rural economy, agricultural land use, and the environment. Simply put, the world is eating much more meat than ever before. Increased incomes and standards of living are enabling an expanding global middle class to adopt diets that are higher in protein. The experience of Japan could provide a glimpse of things to come. As its economy expanded, meat consumption increased 360 percent between 1960 and 1990 (Shah and Strong 1999:19). Between 1995 and 2020, developing countries will account for 85 percent of the growth in demand for both meat products and livestock feed grains (Pinstrup-Andersen et al. 1999:5). The 2 countries with the largest growth in meat consumption are Brazil and China. In the past decade alone, meat consumption in China has been rising an average of 2 kg per capita per year (FAO 2001). The world population has doubled since 1950 to nearly 7 billion. It is expected to reach 9 billion in 30 years. Scientists suggest that we are now at peak water just as we were at peak oil a decade ago. (peak water is reached when the rate at which water demand is higher than the rate at which water is replenished). In India and China, the two most populated countries in the world (nearly 45% of the world’s people), the standard of living has been steadily climbing as has the demand for water. In India, the Indus and Ganges rivers are tapped so heavily they rarely make it to the sea. In western China’s Qinghai province, through which the Yellow River’s main stream flows, more than 2,000 lakes have disappeared over the last 20 years. There were once 4,077 lakes! The USA is the third largest user of water where industrial use is higher than agricultural use. There are 36 states in the U.S. in some form of water stress, from serious to severe. Canada, the third richest country in the world in terms of water, is only exceeded by Brazil and Russia. Canada has 9% of the earth’s fresh water and only 0.5% of the population. Did you know it takes 1000 tons of water to produce one ton of wheat? It takes 225 gallons of water to produce one glass of orange juice. It takes 12,000 tons of water to produce one ton of beef but less than 2 liters per kg is lost from the usable fresh water cycle. One big advantage beef has over competitive meat production is that low quality energy sources can be converted. Beef is unlike that of large scale pork and chicken operations which are heavily dependent on expensive concentrate and most often produced in industrial confined operations near heavily populated areas where water and energy losses are high. Grass based beef production is one of the most eco-friendly protein sources available in the world. These other countries do not have water but they do have money. In Canada we have comparatively cheap roughage and ample water. Come to Crowfoot Cattle Company and get some efficient Angus genetics and then watch what happens! Thanks for your interest. Dallas Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; for His loving kindness is everlasting.

looking forward to seeing You sale day!
