Another year of drought, feed shortages and COVID. What else that has not changed is our commitment to producing quality bulls for the commercial cattlemen/women. We don’t believe in pushing our bulls. They are developed slowly from weaning until the sale as coming 2-yearolds going through a culling process from birth. What we bring to town is the top 30 percent of our bulls. I feel the industry is better off with more steers than poor bulls offered for sale. It’s a pleasure working with the Craig’s on their nutritional needs for their livestock operation. The cowherd utilizes a customized mineral program that is balanced throughout the year. Jim & Jason believe this is very important, especially in a drought year where forages are lower in quality. This supports proper bull calf development from a young age. The bull feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health. They are developed on grass on their mothers; when weaned they are moved onto a balanced TMR that promotes lean muscle growth. The bulls are fed a forage-based TMR to help develop their genetic potential.

Welcome to the 30th Annual Top Cut Bull Sale Catalogue. Despite the many challenges of 2021, or perhaps because of them, we are pleased to present you with our best offering of two year old bulls to date. Like so many producers, the extreme challenges of last year forced assessments of our operation to be more detailed and evaluations to be more critical. Combined with a reduced number of cattle to winter, and subsequently, more time to plan for and worry about the future, we feel this adversity helped improve the quality of our herd. After all, that is what we do in the cattle business, assess the damage and move on using what we have learned to take us forward. Our program at Forbes Ranching Ltd has always relied on hardy cattle selected through careful consideration of herd sires and regular culling of cows. Herd sires are selected based on what they will add to our closed cowherd such as growth potential and increased docility while maintaining existing conformation and maternal traits. Cows are culled if they fail to meet the expectation of producing a quality calf. They need to graze year-round for all or part of their nutritional needs and maintain body condition. The product of that process and more are these 26 bulls of 53 born in 2020. The rest haven’t made the cut. As always, our focus has been on gradually developing these bulls. After spending the first summer with their mothers without any creep feed, we weaned them in late October. During the first winter, we fed them a mixed ration of ground hay and pellets fed at one percent of body weight for an average daily gain near 3lbs per day, an improvement for us which we attribute to increased performance in our herd sires’ genetics. Because of the unusually dry spring and summer, the bulls went out to pasture a little later in June, and we were supplementing the grass with a few pellets in September already. In early October, we began to feed them a mixed ration of ground hay and a grain ration developed by Cargill for growing bulls fed at one percent of body weight. They remained roaming in the pasture until mid-January when we brought them in for sale catalogue pictures. At that point, we decided to keep them in a large pen at the yard, so customers could view them more easily and to reduce feeding costs. During the 2 years these bulls develop, they were handled and formally evaluated twelve times including shortly after birth, at branding and weaning, during trips through the chute for multiple weighings and semen testing, and more. Additionally, we make many assessments while feeding and checking them. We are continually asking: How are they built? How are they gaining? How do they to handle? and more. As bull buyers ourselves, we are finding that while the evaluations in the early stages like birthweights, weaning weights, and appearances are significant, some of the key characteristics are difficult to assess prior to a bull’s first birthday. For example, claw set and hoof angle really take shape during that second summer, and temperament becomes more defined as a bull ages. Just like your yearling heifers don’t all become productive cows in your herd, not every yearling bull makes it to the auction mart on sale day. Unlike those heifers, we have taken on the risk of that yearling year and now present you a select group of 2 year olds for your consideration. In a world of efficiency, I focus on cattle that will walk soundly the duration of their lives, milk, breed, and maintain their condition without any maintenance. This leads to fewer cull cows, requiring fewer heifer calves retained, maximizing calf production. When you’re shopping Bear Creek Angus two year old bulls, we’ve done our utmost to ensure all of these things in their breeding and we strive for every bull to go out and improve the genetics at your operation. When the structure, udder quality, and fertility is taken care of: at Bear Creek we breed for length of body, eye appealing angus character, including an angus head which promotes calving ease, and lots of natural muscle. When selecting a sire, we try to use a bull with the fewest flaws. Our environment changes what type of cattle work where and on what inputs. Our cattle are raised on ranch conditions and are developed slowly to ensure longevity. Conditions can be harsh in our drought-prone area, cattle need to travel for grass and water, and thus we’ve become extremely harsh on foot quality and fleshing ability as we mentioned above. We solely make our living raising cattle, commercial and purebred, and our cattle work for us because we need them to. And we believe they can work for you too. This year we decided to add four yearling heifer bulls. We’ve used bulls this age on our heifers with great success and thought our customers might enjoy the same success with them. Jackson is impressive. Starting with large, good feet, legs with a little extra bone to them and natural thickness with a masculine angus head. His bulls are sure to please, they check all the boxes, but even more so do his heifers; they are incredibly consistent with a stamp to them. We’ve calved a couple crops of heifers and they’re becoming some our strongest cows. Aside from that, he’s an outcross pedigree that does not sacrifice quality in any shape or form. Jackson is gone now from an injury, but we are using a son and will his impact on our herd for many years to come.

Definite herd sire here. His full brother was our high seller going to Lorenz Angus last year and he has another exceptional brother coming up next year. We thought so much of this bull we sorted twenty young cows into a field with him last year. We seriously considered keeping him but with a half brother working in herd we wouldn’t be able to use him as much as we would like. He is from an excellent cow that’s designated an elite cow by the Canadian Angus Association. This bull just offers so much consistency and excellency to any program.

We purchased 37H’s mother as a calf from Crescent Creek Angus and she’s done very well, churning out good functional bulls that anyone can use.

A strong Jackson son from a 26T daughter from our 796W cow who consistently put a front-end bull in sale pen. A maternal brother went to Shamrock Grazing Co-op. His full sister last year was one of the best heifers in the replacement pen so keep an eye for this guy.

Recommended for Heifers. I quite like this bull, I think he should work on heifers. I never used Jackson on heifers, but we used a maternal brother, 54D, on heifers and he was one of the easiest calving bulls I ever used. His mother, 54Z is a great cow, her son 54D who we unfortunately lost, has one bull in the sale. He was an ideally built angus bull who we retained for our own use. Last year a maternal brother went to Mario Dordu.

48Z has made a lot of bulls over the years and continues to put good ones into the sale pen. Her feet and udder are very good, she’s always kept a good condition while dragging home good calves, hard to ask much more of a cow than that. We had high hopes when we purchased ‘Stoney’, and he exceeded all of them. His heifers are flat out amazing, the bull calves are the most consistent that we have raised. If you are looking for thick, hairy cattle to add spring of rib, and stick some meat on while doing it with moderate birth weights then Stoney sons are the bulls you need. Lot 65 - BEAR CREEK STONEY 127H It’s a real toss-up who I like more, 127H or 79H. This bull exemplifies our breeding program. A Stoney son from an excellent Jackson daughter and a 26T grandmother, he has the three best bulls we ever walked stacked in his pedigree. If you’re herdsire shopping, you need to check this guy out. He’s a freight train of meat and muscle, has extra bone to him, excellent neck extension, and great hair. I’m not sure how to fault him, his rump sticks out over his hawks, he’s stands as square as possible. I’d definitely use this guy if he wasn’t related to most every cow we have.

From a nice 26T cow who came from my 223X cow, who really did a The last Stoney from an incredibly good-footed, good-uddered Lucky whopping job on her calves. 93’s mother is a very good cow who had an Sevens cow. The Lucky Sevens have been fundamentally second to none with perfect feet and udders. As heifers I actually questioned if their excellent son go to Box Elder Colony last year. teats were too small, but the calves always seemed to find the teat. Last year a maternal brother went to Perrin Ranching 1990.

We retained this bull for our own use and we haven’t been disappointed, his calves are phenomenal. He posted some the best weight gains we’ve had within our program, with even his EPD’s reflecting that. He’s a long, hard-muscled bull that travels like a cat with a great foot on him. I figured his bulls would check the boxes, but I think I like his daughters even more, they have an exceptional amount of feminine attractiveness to them. The first set will calve out this spring. 88F’s bull calf crop averaged 3.5lbs per day of age, beating both Jackson and Stoney Creek’s bull calf average daily gains of 3.2lbs per day of age. Also take note that every bull in the sale is from an ‘E’ cow, a first calver. We kept 6/7 bulls for the sale from him off young cows.

He’s an impressive bull, ton of meat on him, same great feet and legs as his sire and the proven performance of Touchdown 36M on his mother’s side. 21U was a good-footed, strong uddered cow. She aged out and was sold, but has several great daughters in the herd. Of note, 125E who raised the 125H bull, along with 85A who had a great Jackson son in the sale last year. Recommended for heifers. We decided to try selling a few of our heifer bulls as yearlings this year. They are all born before April 10th and we’ve had good luck breeding our heifers to this age of bulls. This bull is out of a very nice Stoney daughter from our 32Y cow who is still producing with a solid foot and udder. This bull should calve heifers with ease, he is sired by Windy 3C who we have successfully used for years on our heifers.

Recommended for Heifers. I really like this bull, he’s thick made, stylish, and from another great Stoney daughter. His sire 703G is incredibly good footed, long and stylish made. His grandmother has a two year old in the sale and performed very well for us over the years.
