The Western Prime Sale Group UPDATES ON FACEBOOK Western Prime Shorthorn Bull & Female Sale
Western Prime was one of the first Shorthorn Bull Sales in the world to have all offered bulls armed with Genomically Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPD)
BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
The birth weight Itself Influences calving ease by 65%. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. The bull has 30-40% Influence on birth weight of his progeny. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day In the last days of gestation. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. Size and maturity of the cow Influence calving ease.
Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer - what's thought to be 55 mph may In fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what's thought to be 70-80 lb. may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything Is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, It takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

Expected Progeny Differences
Western Prime
BENEFITS OF GENOMICALLY - ENHANCED EPDs TO COW/CALF PRODUCERS (GE-EPD) The value added by genomic profiling can be appreciated when we consider how it significantly increases the accuracy and reliability of the existing data and EPD values. To understand how significant of an increase in reliability we can cross compare how many progeny it would take from a bull or progeny from a cow to have the same effect in increased reliability of the EPD traits; these are called Progeny Equivalents. A genome profile has the Progeny Equivalent, same significance in accuracy increase, as reporting 15 reported calving ease scores, 21 birth weights reported, 22 weaning weights reported, 24 yearling weights reported. Very significant!! Now get this!! The advantage of genomic profiling for the purposes of female replacement will provide more significance than what can be collected from a lifetime of production; progeny equivalents of 25 stayability/longevity records and 18 milk records!! An EPD value is only as valuable as it's accuracy and reliability and until then it's potentially dangerous in the wrong hands!! Maternal GE-EPDs – Improve profits per cow: • Verify calving-ease bulls, saving time, cost and stress when calving heifers. • Identify bulls and cows with superior reproduction traits to improve cowherd fertility and maternal productivity. • Better fertility improves conception rates, calving window and calf-crop uniformity. Performance GE-EPDs – Optimize efficient returns: • Produce cows that improve pounds weaned per exposed female. • Produce cows for optimum growth for your grazing environment. • Improve feed efficiency, producing heifers and cows that gain well on less feed and pass thrifty traits onto to their calves. Quality GE-EPDs – More consistency of beef quality: • Helps customers retaining calves, or selling into grids or value networks. • Adds value and reputation quality in stockers or feeder calves. • Predicts quality up front, saving years of valuable time, with less hassle than collecting carcass data.
Using genomic-enhanced EPDs for selection of young breeding stock provides a level of precision and reliability that’s never been available to producers before. Bob Weaber - Kansas State University

CANADIAN SHORTHORN EPDs Expected progeny differences (EPDs) are a very important tool used in genetic selection. EPDs are used to compare the differences in predicted performance of animals’ offspring for specific traits. Calculation of EPDs is driven by pedigree, progeny, and individual performance data. The American Shorthorn Association offers 12 different EPDs for specific traits. Additionally, ASA provides three economic ($ Value) indexes, providing a single value for the selection of breeding stock that optimizes selection on a number of traits that define profit in a particular production scenario. Definitions for traits found in this catalog are: Calving Ease Direct (CED): The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers. This value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; the more positive a number is the more desirable. Birth Weight (BW): An indicator of birth weight and calving ease. Larger BW EPDs typically, but not always indicate more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight (WW): Weaning weight measures the differences in weight of calves at weaning, and is also reported in pounds. A higher WW EPD indicates an expected higher weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Like other weight traits, YW measure the differences in weight of animals at yearling, and is also expressed in pounds. Higher YW EPDs indicate a higher expected yearling weight. Milk (MK): the expected differences in a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning weight due to their milking ability. Milk is looking at how well daughters milk and how that translates to the weaning weights of their calves. A higher MK EPD indicates a higher weaning weight due to the bull’s daughters’ milking ability. Total Maternal (TM): TM predicts the total difference in weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning. A portion of this difference in weight comes from the milking ability of the bull’s daughters (MK EPD), and a portion comes from the genes for growth passed from the bull to his daughters and then on to their calves. The TM EPD is calculated by taking ½ of a bull’s WW EPD + his MK EPD. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters who calve unassisted. The value is expressed as a percentage of unassisted births, with a more positive number being more desirable. Stayability (ST): The newest addition to the Shorthorn EPD lineup, Stayability is a measure of the percentage
of a bull’s daughters that will still be in the herd at six years old. Like CED and CEM, Stayability is expressed as a percentage. A higher ST EPD indicates a higher percentage of daughters staying in the herd. Calving Ease Direct ($CEZ): This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. British Maternal Index ($BMI): This multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Feedlot ($F): $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F. PAGE 3

As always, we are excited to be a part of the Western Prime Bull and Female Sale. This year we have again selected a group of yearling bulls we feel will work with purebred or commercial herds alike. Our bulls are grown on free choice hay and a grain ration. The bulls will all be semen tested prior to the sale day with a satisfactory rating. All of our cattle are vaccinated yearly on a program designed by our veterinarian Dr. Colin Lawrence of the Westlock Veterinary Center. We use BoviShield products and Vision 8 way. Ivomec pour on is used in the fall. Our bulls have genomic enhanced EPDs which gives our buyers a clear picture of the genetic potential of the bulls. If you have any questions regarding our bulls or our program, please feel free to call.

Crooked Post remains very disciplined and dedicated in the breeding of our cattle, we've certainly enjoyed the successes of others who are using our genetics locally and internationally but our relentless quest to improve and do a better job with the cattle remains stronger than ever, the quest for the 'next step' requires endless study of Shorthorn genetics globally. We demand a cow that is structurally sound, easy fleshing, fertile and raises a top calf every year. Our culling protocol is severe, we don't accommodate poor udders, bad feet, bad attitudes or inferior productivity in general, the bulls offered are from strong solid females. Our breeding selections and decisions are derived from our management and environment that dictates high roughage diets with limited energy supplementation. No creep feed through the grazing season, weaned bulls are introduced to a winter of free choice grass hay and limit fed whole oats. It's essential for us to develop the bulls on a moderate diet, enough to grow out and demonstrate their abilities without sacrificing the longevity as sound productive breeders. We'd be most pleased to talk Shorthorns with you, if you have any questions about the bull offering please don't hesitate to call. Kind regards,
Kirk & Brandie, Tom & Sharon Seaborn

Stayability is one of our most important selection traits. Cows that can persist in the herd for many years while remaining productive is something this industry needs more of. This bull’s dam, Betsy 81T, is our herd matron. She has produced six different herd sires over the years that were sold to purebred and commercial producers alike, with two more on offer in this sale. This spring she is expecting her 14th natural calf, and looks half her age doing it. Hardy 28H is just as good as his brothers before him, and a safe choice for any breeding program.

My herdsire, HS Freeway 896F, is offered here only as a consequence of this dispersal. Freeway was well utilized in my herd, which was based on the breed changing Dixon Farms bull - DF Pure Gold 3N. Freeway has produced great calves with great temperaments. He has a sound pedigree with great cattle behind him - combining the blood lines of DF Pure Gold and Saskvalley Yesterday. He displays a lot of natural thickness and depth of body. He has an attractive head and a square hip; extremely sound made with great depth of heel. His dam is a top producing roan cow who milks extremely hard with a beautiful udder. Two of his sons, 103J and 105J, are offered today – both out of great roan dams, the DFJ Maggie cow and JSF Rose. The other 2 bull calves on offer, 100J and 104J, are both from very well known roan sires - Hill Haven Fire Storm 28C and DRS Super Mario 42E. Choose any of these bulls with confidence in their quality and soundness.

A bull whose name is well known worldwide as his genetics have been used by many Shorthorn breeders outside of Canada. An ET calf out of Timeline and New Beginnings Elsies Jade. His dam needs no introduction as she was a very successful top ranking female in Grants donor program for many years. Free spirit has sired show champions and practical hard working cattle. I’ve retained several of his daughters in herd and they have impeccable temperaments udder structure adequate milk and good foot structure. His sons have gone on to produce in the same manner in many commercial herds. He carried tremendous muscle and length of spine and was a docile easy to handle bull throwing those traits into his offspring. Two lots of 5 straws available. Semen is limited. One of the most prolific and influential Shorthorn sires of the past decade with progeny throughout 5 continents. His untimely death this past winter at 10 years of age was a shock to us, not to mention we had a full breeding season and one last semen collection scheduled for him but that unfortunately won't happen! His accomplishments and accolades are tremendous, a bull whose benefits will be timeless for decades to come. We proudly present to you the last offering of Crooked Post Stockman 4Z semen in Canada. Semen stored at Alta Genetics Balzac, semen is Canada and US qualified, shipping at buyers' expense.
