The core value of Enamel Experiment project : Reborn of the broken / abandon metalwares.
Testing sample : big sacle of enamel apply to the bad quality metal.
Enamel Experiment is a conceptual project of transforming abandoned metalwares into living products via reform, reassemble and refinnishing surface with enamel coating. The most challenging part of this project is enamel coating. How to coating enamel on these bad quality metalwares? As knowing, the enamel glaze can only apply on specific kinds of metal, like pure gold, silver, copper...etc because of the chemical reaction. It must be those very high quality metal kinds and clean surface, or enamel can not attach to surface successfully. So, this is the most big challenge of this project. Robin Mathew once said “design is where science and art break even.” which describing the whole spirit of this project so well in a sentence.

Abandoned metalwares collecing resource.
Besides the enamel coating, another main challenge is the combination of metal craps. Good combination makes brand new form, but also keep the original characters of each object itselves. So how to balance the aesthetics between single object and the overall form at the same time is important. For this purpose,over 50 types of combination has been tested, and the result comes to these 5 as a final versions.
The 3 steps : Concept of making the best use of objects from ancient Asian wisdom.
Although the combinaiton is decided, but the reality is â&#x20AC;&#x153;HOWâ&#x20AC;??Each new form is combined by over 8 different objects, how to connect each others in a smart way is a big problem to face, it also needs the rich metal production knowledges and flexible mind to think out of frame to solve problems. Of course the electronic routes and components of lighting needs to be considered as well.

The final form of these 5 lamps. Surprisingly, even though each single component is came out by mass production in industrial way, and of course their original function is nothing about decoration, but the final forms are more alike the Decorativeism, like some kind of Istanbul art style buildings. Take No.3 TURQUOISE for example, the components from top to down are : onze cup / parts of towel rail / tea filter / door handle / sink drainer / rooftop drainer / pot / steam basket ... and so on, each of them are functional purpose just exactly as t he famous saying : â&#x20AC;&#x153;Form is underpinned by function.â&#x20AC;?
The process sketches, thinking of the solution of combinations. Also the technical drawing for communication to the professional metalware makers. Designers might be full of creative ideas, but when comes to the production,they still need trustable good partners, who is rich in making experience.

[color testing] The color of enamel powder has a big difference between baked and unbaked. These door handle lids are the most suitable as a color sample, because of the slightly curve surface able to see the finishing luster texture of enamel coating. Each color code has been placed on two different electroplating lids, one is nickel plating and the other is copper plating, the different color of these plating also matter the final finnishing color.
This is the final result of coating of No.2 NEMO. After the countless times of failure, the brilliant solution finally comes out and makes enamle powder enable to attach to different kinds of metalwares successfully. Over 30 minutes with temperature above 500 degree in the electric kiln, the coating surface naturally form these small bubble due to the air of water-based adhesive from the first layer. It takes couple of times to figure out the proper temperature and baking time for each different color enamel powder, since each one of them has its own melting degree. Of course things are not always go easy, when there is another unpredictable variable problem hiding, which is the metal parts combination. Because the combining components are collected from recycle plants, the metal kinds and qualities are not the same. Some of them are unable to take such a high temperature like over 500 degree, because their melting degree might be much more lower than enamel powder. So when this situation happens, it will turn out like a mess and have no choice but to start it all over again, since each components are the only one, and also irreversible.
[metalwares surface cleaning] Those abandoned metalwares always have multiple layers on their surface,which will make the metal baking situation more complicated.In order to get rid of the unpredictable factors of baking procedure, these multiple layers must to be clean, to make the body skin more pure.The enamel coating succeed more higher after fixing all the metalware surfaces. [electronic Kiln] The kinds of the kiln also need to be considered. For the clean and gentle-rising temperature environment needs, the controlable temperature electronic kiln is the most proper one for enamel.The heater of the electronic kiln also very considerable comes from each side, makes the baking environment same heat at the same time. During the 2015 YODEX (Taiwanese Young Designers)exhibition, this project luckily win the golden prize of 2015 young pin design award and the benchmark award of ASUS venture challenge,these bring to lots of media reports and magazine interview as well. This project has been reported on TAIWAN CRAFT magazine, BEIJING ART & DESIGN magazine, MAKK museum press and KOLNER designer preis. Same year, ENAMEL EXPERIMENT also honorly had a chance to join a group exhibition with KISD in MAKK museum for over one month.
Some reporter asked why ENAMEL EXPERIMENT comes out ceiling lamps but not other kinds of product while interviewing. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true that not only ceiling lamps, but also everything else could be the body of ENAMEL EXPERIMENT, but when says to the delicated products, lamps are definitly the one which can properly suit the most. Within the sensorium is a transcriber, or a synthesizing faculty, using synonymous intangibles where association and experience fail: as the capacity of certain sounds to induce colour images, certain arabesque forms may find aesthetic truth.

Besides the ceiling lamps, there are vase edition of Enamel Experiment as well. Unlike the lamps series, the vase series are more easily to feel closer of the texture. When comes to design vase, it has a big related to the flower arrangement arts. Before designing the vase series,I use the experience of myself from flower arrangement class I used to take when I was a kid. Including the specific tools for flower arrangement art, the combination core is to use that kind of elements twisted into the ideas. Like, there is a tool called forg, it is formed with countless niddles, which is for fixing the the different scapes to a right angle and place. Taking this function, the felter with holes has the same function with frog, but twisted for the original use of it. Thats how i called the real reborn, not only the shape, but also the use.
09 The vase series come out 4 types in total. For different using and flower types, there are tall vase ,for both fresh flowers or dry ones; flower plate, for more art kind of demonstration; small vase, only for thin flower scape. These four types of vase can be domonstrate flowers in several ways. At the same time enaml is waterproof because of its glaze base, so for becomeing the vase, which need to contain water, canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be more suitable. Enamel Experiment is a project combine recycle issue and material revolution, thinking of the all kinds of the objects produced by human, try to keep the unique character of each peieces to remind us how beautiful details are by the mass production which we ignored. FlexibleLove is a Taiwanese honeycomb furniture brand, which born in 11 years ago from a student’s graduation project. When it came out first time, it was a huge hit to the media , and after all the virally spreading social media reports, they started to build a brand for the market. This is the very first beginning of this brand. During these 10 years, they took some time building the stable marketing chain, the relationship with relyable wholesales partners in Europe and so on. Because of putting efforts mostly on whole sales and marketing, instead of working on branding things, such as developing brand values, identity , improvements of products ...etc, they become just like an OEM factory.This is why they need to rebrand.

I joined this brand was while they just start to rebranding. Since i was the only designer background in the small team, i had to deal with everything related to design. No matter itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visual side or product side. The most highly priority job for the brand is the new official website. They need a platform to re-introuduce themselves in a new concept, new core value, new structure of brand to customers. Bussiness way also changed from B2B to B2C, in order to know target customers better. The most important thing in B2C is building understandable messeges for cummunucation to make sure our points are really delivered to customers. They believe what makes brand be loved by people one of the reason is also based on the agreement of the brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s value. After website start developing, it also come with several times of product shooting for official website.

13 After formulate the website structure, inluding 5 pages : HOME ; HELLO ; SHOP ; DESIGN(MAKE) ; ASK pages, give each pages it’s own purpose , then started the design for each pages. All the elements used on web need to flollow carefully to brand’s new CI guideline, which including color palette, fonts, typography system. For homepage, because it is our entrance page, we try to deliver the joy and durability of honeycomb sofa, our only product at that time, for the first impression for visitors. The first section of homepage is a background motion video, due to its paper stucture, it will be better to demonstrate via a video.
The third version of HOME page for website.
To make the website flow more easier to purchase, we put a “Have a seat ”flowing buttom on right side, which will follow the scroll when viewing. After clicking “Have a seat” buttom, visitors will directly go into SHOP page, same as clicking SHOP on the navigator. In SHOP page, visitors can see all products we have -- the FlexibleLove sofa. At that time we only have 1 category in different colors. We named each color by feelings, and it’s all related to nature mineral, from brown one to white one, listed as EARTH, SANDSTONE, MARBLE. We want our costomers feel products’ names are related to the nature, same as the main material of product -- paper.

After finishing the construction of laptop version, we start working on the RWD system, which means website on laptop, tablet, phone are linkage. Thanks to the technology, smart phones makes purchase more convinent. More and more users using online shop to place an order, from daily necessities to luxuries, now we even give them an option for furnitures. A mature online shop must be clearly and easy understanding in their webflows. Especially in smart phone, we have limited space so we need to cut down all the unnecessities elements, wording and function, only leave the important things on it. Behaviors are different. Every situation should be considered carefully, we use our own online shopping experience to design the workflows, thinking when comes to purchase, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the real important information to consumers, every instruction for placing an order needs to be clear and step by step. So does the interface design, the kerning, spacing and size of fonts or sentences, need to adjust to the most comfortable balance for visitors when viewing. Then we turned out to this completely nice phone site/ tablet site.

Another main target after rebrand is to develope the related new product line. Since this brand start, they only produce one kind of product in different colors, and selling it for almost 10 years. So it’s better to have a new product to refresh whether for customer side or brand side. In the very beginning to brain storming the new product, it could be anything, even not furniture was ok, it was no limit and frame of this “new brand”. But when we thinking of : what is the best next step for brand after we know the needs of both sides? The answer was out obviously, we have a well developed manufacture line in producing honeycomb seating, so we decided to use this resource that we already have to reduce the risks. Considering the weight of first product SOFA is the way to much, bad for both user experience and shipping fee, so we decided to develope the BENCH series.
17 When started design the bench, the scale must be a huge difference from sofa, and also from our Canada com-petitor : Molo. We studied and improved ,and make our own scale. The second point is : shape. It’s all about shape in this kind of material. A good shape can make good identity of brand and also being highly recon-gnized and also show the beauty of material when using. But shapes always follow the fun-ction. Every design move has its reason, so from all of these shapes, it naturally narrow down two shapes : B. and I. in one common : waist for strape to easily storage, but different curves. After all the comparing and testing, we choose B. as our final shape for bench series .
The final shape of the BENCH. The up-down symmetry shape can be seat in double side, also left-right sysmmetry can let users stretch both direction to make bench circle. The waist shape cut down some area, so the weight is lighter when in the same scale, and it also makes the space for user’s hands when stretching or shaping the bench. Beside the paper shape, the side board shape also need to be designed. According to the character of honeycomb paper, it will getting crush after use. From the side view, the MDF wood board have some space from up-down edges for the paper crush. The middle trench on left-right side of MDF board is for fixing the position when tie the strape. The magnets which buried in MDF side board are also arranged to be matched no matter it’s upside down or left-right inversely when connecting to each other or itself.

The packaging design of BENCH series is also user considered. From the SOFA product itself and packaging, we learn a lesson that it’s too giant and heavy to be move by one, and even two people still very hard to move. Thanks to the much more light weight of BENCH, we are able to design a handle for shortly lifting and grabing by one person, and the apperance just look like the hand suit case. The weight won’t be a bother anymore for both customers or delivery staffs. Outside the boxs we can see the product names in the front, also color stickers on the side to easily discriminate different color benches for factory staffs. Inside the box, besides the main product and additional strape for storage, there are series of brand’s visual indicator interacting with our customers. From top to down customers will see : Thank you note / 3 steps simple instruction / User guide handbook / Function note on strape and so on, to lead them start the new products they probably never use before, and experience the joy.
After tying the strape on bench, it can be lifting as well by only single hand. Consider of the environment, we hope the packagings are not just a one-time-packaging, which lead to huge amount of trash and waste. That is the reason why we choose the hard cardboard and good quality of all material in packaging.

Strape plays an very important role in FL’s product. As you can see the extending honeycomb paper will become looser after use, so when trying to fold it , it’s not easy especially the ones used for more longer more older. In order to keep our one of the selling point -- easy storage when not in use, that’s comes the tool strape.
The process of designing strape also took very long time, it’s not a difficult product but when comes to weight ability and strength durability, the material uesd in strape should be carefully choosed and tested. After all the points are pass the tests then start mass production process in China’s cooperation factory.

Although FlexibleLove honeycomb chair is easy to understand how to use, but when it comes to really use it, most of the customers facing lots of questions about it. Because of the underestimated the weight of paper chair, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a easy work for stretching the brand new chair for the first time. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why we need a user guide to teach our customers how to use it correctly in a easy understanding 2d drawing steps indicator. The user guide will be given inside the package.

The Christmas gift to those important customers of FL, since our customers and market are all in Europe and The State, Christmas is a big festival for them even we are Asia based brand, we still need to catch up the issue in western for reacting no gap. We always want to deliver the brand core value for our customers and potential customers that â&#x20AC;&#x153;we seat conmmunityâ&#x20AC;?, how we care about you and your community, so choose tea as a gift for them to enjoy with their community and seating on our chair.

For the very beginning, Hsu found herself have obessessed to those wearable accessories, but they all look alike and have the same term as simple, classic , elegant . Hsu think it must has the needs for the really unique and eyecatching ones in the market, so there comes RINGRING. RINGRING is a annual brand, launch their new products annually, and each year has different theme depends on the issues Hsu and her gals are interesting in. Rather than saying RINGRING is a purchasing brand, they are more like experimental fashion project. To define RINGRING, it’s not only a earrings brand, “accessory” this word also including from purse to sunglass to even shoes. The packaging design for RINGRING is also eye catching. Due to the items are all in the different size / shape, it’s impossible to use the traditional boxes way to pack, of course the traditional way won’t fit RINGRING’s brand identity anyway. After couples of ideas brainstorming, the point of brand’s package comes out, is --------- it’s really
important for demonstrating.In order to showing how unique RINGRING’s products are, it’s the best way for package.So here comes the final design of the brand’s package ---THE AIR BALLOON. It smartly combine the demonstrating nature by its transparent plastic skin, also the best cushioning function protecting products from crush by air filling.

We took the biggest e-ciggarate company’s case in Japan -- JT Ploom Tech. This is the new product proposal for them, they have been 2 years don’t have any new product release, so this one is an important shot for the company. When I joined JKS, they a;ready have couples of cases from JT running. This idea is for both women and men, the shape is simple and easy to hold, it’s also resaonable in the design details. But maybe it’stoo classic shape so the company didn’t pick in the end.

CASABLANCA is an old rattan furniture brand in Japan which was really popular in the market while 1980 - 1990s, but due to the funiture design market have growing so fast and the new design and innovative material keep coming out every year, the brand going down day by day and it seems not gonna make it a hit again. So the operator of the brand wants to rebrand, they want to follow up the chaging world and then make it into market again. So they come to JKS asking for design the new product for them as the first shot of being back. I took this case for only refining the 3d sofa data parts, as the rattan can be elegant and beautifully shaping, the task for me is to adjust the curve smoothly and resonable in 3 dimention in actual size. Also, this is the first case for me to being under mass production in furniture market.

In this case is like a scuplture project for JKS creation. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not for mass production, only make 3-5 piece by hand. The point is how to create a perfect pattern in limitation of size of stainless mesh net and the shape in final is what we want in the same time. So I develope couples of defferent kind of cutting pattern, the way to form and the connecting line are also different.

The process of proposal an idea to client , take this case for example, i start from making 1:6 scaled model for brainstorming ideas. After almost dozen of scaled chair have been create, we checked each by each to pick the good idea. After picked, the idea will move into making 1:1 model to test the structure. After comfirmation, then move forward to 3d programing to make overall final look including details for real. Last step is to rendering the color and material.

HANDBOOK client_Shiang Design Studio output_ handbook for 2018 Tokyo exhibition

When I took this case, is one month before I come to Tokyo, it was the last visual case in Taiwan. Shiang design studio attend the sell exhibition every year in Tokyo, their main clients and cooperation partners are from the show. So they need a fresh handbook with beautiful visual layout and proper design to show their juicy purchasing products and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t losing their brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s identity in the same time.

For AI field company, the exhibition COMPUTEX is the most important exhibition of the year.The Japanese new young company INCUBIT they need a professional and tech look design for their billboard and flyer in the exhibition. This time I try to add some future feeling elements in the visual, like facial 3d scanning image and transition point screen.

The previous company FlexibleLove I worked before, have changed the owner, and the brand director want to change the whole brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name, even company identity. So he comes to me to asking for whole new CI system. The product they sell still the same, but the brand is the new one. This case still under construction.
