NEW YORK CITY TREND REPORT
ARCH ITECTURE In New York City
The Architecture in New York City I found was phenomenal. Every building is very tall and built up, so it is exciting to see how the architecture is constructed with this. Most of the buildings have arched windows which I have noticed is a trend. A lot of the historical or old looking buildings use large arched windows or doors on (Such as the Ralph Lauren store, second image, bottom row), or inside them. For example, Grand Central Station uses arched windows on the outside, but also there are arches on the ‘domed’ ceiling (bottom right image). Another trend which I have established is the importance of glass. A lot of New York architecture has vast amounts of glass windows and this creates a ‘modern’ look even on the oldest, more unattractive buildings which makes them look more attractive. When the lights are on in the buildings it almost ‘lights up the city’.

HELLO,
BROOKLYN
Brooklyn. Although a quiet, fairly empty town, it’s art speaks out loud. Nearly every wall or gate is covered in colourful grafitti which gives Brooklyn its unique persona. The colour has to be emphasised here, as ironically, it highlights the “beauty” of the untidy, littered town. This is a trend I have noticed in other towns similar too. E.g. Shoreditch in London is an artistic town with boutiques and has graffiti on almost every wall. It gives these small towns some creativity as without this, it would look quite un-appealing.
IN STORE VM
The in-store visual merchandising in mostly all of the boutiques in Brooklyn were all different. This itself is a trend, as they are not following ‘conventional’ store VM where everything is set out nicely, jewellery in locked glass cabinets, clothes nicely layed out; instead everything is completely different from every other store and all have their own unique brand identity which is conveyed through their VM. E.g. The image on the left is from a store in Brooklyn selling old vintage designer garments. This store separated all the designers and created it’s own creative display for each brand. This is a display of vintage Louis Vuitton.
The incredible work of...
JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER
The Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition was absolutely extraordinary. With the growing trend of every one of the manikins in the exhibition were projected with famous faces that spoke, and his designs were beautiful yet precisely detailed with embellishment and bold colours. The trend of manikins being made to look life-like is increasing in stores to engage the consumer into the store and the clothes being displayed.
