From President Mike Hallen
G
reat to have Mark and Angela Jones visit our club again after a 5-year absence. A very informative address by Mark concerning the supermarket business. We have planned a “Business Networking” cocktail evening on 14th
October. Please consider nominating suitable attendees and provide their names and contact details to Membership Director Rod Williamson so that an invitation list can be compiled and an invitation sent. We are hoping to have at least 25 guests on the night – but the more the merrier! It is Club Assembly this week, a time and place for the members to hear from the Board about the plans for the year ahead and to ask questions about what is proposed. The plan will be amended to incorporate meaningful suggestions and to correct any errors. Please come prepared to be involved – it is your plan after all! It would be helpful if you could provide your questions in writing (email to me is one method) before the Club Assembly to facilitate discussion and allow for answers to be prepared in advance if at all possible. Please visit our club website (http://www.rotarynews.info/club4201) and have a good look at the Strategic (3-5 year) plan as well as the Annual plan for 2015-2016. These two documents encapsulate the direction that the club is taking but it only reflects the views of the Board. We need the input of the members to ensure that they believe in the plans and can assist in their implementation or can offer suggestions as to how they can be improved. I have now received 8 responses to the PreVisioning Questionnaire – only a small sample of the views of the members. We are now a club of 30 members, most of whom attend our weekly meetings on a regular basis. We need the feedback from the members to enable the Visioning Team to prepare for the visit to our club and to focus on the areas of strength or weakness that persist in our club.
Yours in Rotary
President Mike . 2

NOTICE: Rotary International Night for combined Hills Clubs Please be advised that due to planned meeting commitments at a number of Hills District clubs around August 12, the International Dinner at the Dural Thai restaurant has been postponed until next year. I thank all clubs for rallying their members to attend & apologise for any inconvenience & will endeavour to give longer notice next time.

he Editor of the ‘Hills Views’, Anil De Silva had a pleasure of presenting a letter of congratulation received from Rotary International President, Ravi Ravindran to the President of Cobar Rotary Club, Gary Woodman, at it’s first club meeting in this Rotary year recently.
RI representative office in Parramatta, Australia stated that only around 20 such letters had been received by Australian Rotary clubs this year. On a different topic, Anil was requested to carryout research on information related to formation of Cobar Rotary club. This year it will celebrate 50 years of service to the community.

Lawyers‌. sent by Bob Chary A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, and then insured them against, among other things, fire. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost 'in a series of small fires.' The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued and WON! (Stay with me.) Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable 'fire' and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars that perished in the 'fires'. NOW FOR THE BEST PART... After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!! With, his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine. This true story won First Place in last year's Criminal Lawyers Award contest. ONLY IN AMERICA?

Explanatory Notes: Club Business Meeting: A normal Club meeting without a guest speaker at which information is exchanged (nominally from the Board or Committee Chair) about planned events or reporting back on an event/project. Perhaps an opportunity to impart some Rotary knowledge/ hear from new members/ hear about something interesting from a member. Club Committee Meeting: A Club meeting at which the Committees members are seated together and at which they discuss Committee matters. Guest Speaker: What we now experience weekly but reduced in number to 1 or 2 per month. Please see page 10 9
Sergeant’s Fine Session
Hannibal Shabaz Hannibal had a plethora of fines including. David Bull returned to the Club. Phil Davis for his efforts to hear. Paul Robinson for not increasing spacecraft speed to Pluto. Penny and Marie look like dancers. John Cooper's 50th anniversary. Two Mikes in and out!!!! Money from many for Changeover photos. From page 09… Explanatory Notes
Mini-Club Assembly: A meeting in September and March at which the members are invited to offer comments/suggestions/feedback about the performance of the Club (and Board) and to ask the Board/Committee Chairmen questions. Business/Networking Meeting : A meeting to which we invite members of the local business community to experience Rotary and to network with each other and Rotarians. This is not a replacement for the Hills Business Chamber nor is it intended to be a competitor to its activities. It would probably be a cocktail party style evening with finger food to which we could also invite partners and selected other guests (e.g. representatives of the Hills Shire Council or other community-based organisations with which we have, or would like to form, a relationship). Could also be a multi-club (Zone) event. Fun & Fellowship Evening with Partners: Just that - a night to enjoy each other’s company and have fun. This
could also be a cocktail style meeting with finger food to which guests could also be invited. We could schedule one of these in each half-year. Could also be a meeting at another location or a visit to a show or a restaurant. More than one of these would be great. The evening might be themed as a quiz or other such fun evening that’s why we need an active Fellowship Committee! Special events: Such as the Tour de Hills Appreciation evening/Excellence in Policing/Pride in Workmanship/ Warren Bowden Scholarship/Excellence in Teaching would be fitted in appropriately - potentially in the RI themed month if possible. A couple of these have been included in the calendar as examples. They would take precedence over any other conflicting activity in the calendar once we had scheduled them. Vocational Visits: Very welcome if they can be arranged and we would give them priority over normally scheduled arrangements. None scheduled at the moment. Waiting for suggestions.
