Their new President, Grant, has an excellent team of enthusiastic people to help him so let’s get them involved in our projects and help them out with theirs. By actively It was a great reminder to us all of the imengaging with them that is the way we will portance of Rotary in the community and encourage them to stay in Rotary and to join our challenge as local Castle Hill members to a Rotary Club and be active in Rotary beyond make a contribution to the world by suptheir time in Rotaract. I think as a whole we porting our own efforts with ROMAC and fail to keep as many Rotaractors as we could other of our major regional projects. so let’s try to arrest that and reverse it. Last week we heard of the remarkable work of ROMAC and saw some of the images of the work that we as Rotarians do to change the lives of people in our region.
Planning is well underway for our Cross Country Fun Run and I beginning to feel confidence that we can run a great event. Mike Blair and I visited the Rotary Roseville Chase Fun Run which is now in its 5th year and they are attracting 600 plus competitors, from the keen local club runners (based on the winning times in their 10 kl), to the family groups with kids in their strollers who are happy to do 2 kl. The event is well managed but there are not too many complicated arrangements with a few sponsors tents, a coffee and ice cream van, a BBQ and of course electronic timing. I think we have it about right with our plan to run three dis-
Please not that the calendar has changed to reflect the Zone meeting on 9 September at the Pennant Hills Golf Club, which is at Copeland Road, Beecroft (not Pennant Hills as the name might suggest). I am hoping that we will have a guest speaker present to tell us about an Aboriginal project which Terry and Phil Dunn have been pursuing which I am sure has great merit and which the Zone might well be able to support. Yours in Rotary ,
President Chris 2
F
orty years ago, a man named George Campbell, the owner of the company I worked for, invited me to join Rotary. Back then, that was a common practice in the United States. Your boss invited you to join Rotary because he thought it would be good for business and good for the community, and you said yes. It’s not surprising that our membership surged during that period.
G
eorge warned me not to use Rotary as an excuse to slack off at work. Even so, I always had time to attend lunch meetings and serve on committees. I never had to worry that taking a long lunch once a week would hurt my advancement, or what my boss would think about the occasional Rotary phone call at work.
T
oday, things are different. Companies are less generous about time, and not every manager looks favorably on community service. It’s hard to enjoy a Rotary meeting when you’ve got emails piling up on your phone. It’s harder than ever to balance work with Rotary – and the model that gave us so much growth a few decades ago is part of what’s holding back our growth now.
have more flexibility now to respond to the needs of their members and to clear away as many barriers to membership as they can. But there’s one barrier to membership that only you can remove, one thing that every prospective member needs to become a Rotarian: an invitation to join a Rotary club.
W
henever I tell a group of Rotarians that we need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward, everyone applauds. But those hands, hearts, and minds won’t magically appear in our clubs. We have to ask them to join. And an invitation to Rotary is something that only you can give. An invitation is a gift. It’s saying to someone, “I think you have the skills, the talent, and the character to make our community better, and I want you to join me in doing that.”
I
’m the president of Rotary International, but the only club I can invite someone to join is the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tenn. I can’t make your club or your community stronger. Only you can do that – by inviting the qualified people you know to join you in Rotary Serving Humanity.
T
hat’s why the recent Council on Legislation adopted some innovative measures that allow clubs to vary their meeting times and expand their pool of prospective members. Clubs 3

resident Chris opened the meeting, welcoming the guest speaker from the Rotary Club of Crows Nest, Phillip Smith, who is the District Chair of ROMAC. More about ROMAC shortly.
Apologies were received from Mike Blair, who came down with the lurgy as testified by those who were with him yesterday at the Cross Country meeting held at Raymond’s home. Thanks to Pamela for proving yummy snacks and putting up with us. The same culprits are still away on LOA but we are pleased to note that Hannibal will be back from his travels and among us again soon. No doubt with many tails to tell. A quick update on progress with the Cross Country was provided by those on the committee and we thank Sushil for participating and for been given a job by Mike Blair and agreeing to take it on. Welcome to Rotary Sushil! Planning is going well. A contra deal with The Hills Times is agreed which will see them give us the sort of support they have done in the past for the Tour de Hills which should give us lots of publicity. We have also received support from Alan Drew Funerals for which we are grateful. Chris reminded everyone that the Club Assembly is next week and the plans for the year will be presented. The Directors are finalising their plans in the context of our reaffirmation of the strategic direction. We will aim to publish if we can before the meeting. On 11 August there will be a Zone Presidents meeting with the new AG, John Fenessey from Epping Club. Chris will report back to members anything of material significance that emerges from that meeting, which will be the first of this Rotary year. Expect some news perhaps on joint projects with Zone clubs and some joint publicity efforts to make sure our local communities are aware of Rotary. If we can be in the press every week – whether its us or Norwest Sunrise or Glenhaven etc. – this is good for support and might help us to grow interest in Rotary. Remember the Zone meeting is 9 September at Pennant Hills Golf Club – more details will come later but please put this in your diaries. There will be no meeting therefore on the preceding Wednesday. Ross Hood advised that we have candidates for RYLA and also for the National Youth Science Forum. More about them later. He also reminded members to support the efforts of RYDA which this year feature young people from Gilroy Catholic College in Castle Hill. Friday 19 August at the Tennis Centre, Sydney Olympic Park, form 8.30 till about 2.30 with lunch and morning tea provided. About 6 volunteers needed to help kids get to the right place at the right time. Continued... 7
Reminder that semi-annual dues are due. Thanks Treasurer. Following the Sergeant session and the wine raffle, President Chris formally introduced Phil Smith. Phil has been engaged with ROMAC for a while and provided members with an excellent overview of the program and its aims. Many children in our local region, particularly those from the Pacific Island communities, have relatively poor medical facilities to go along with the relative poverty of their people. As a consequence when children are born with severed deformities or life threatening illnesses or conditions, they are often left untreated. ROMAC finds and teats many of these children by bringing them to Australia and New Zealand, finding hospitals and surgical teams, host families who will look after the parents and guardians while their children are in hospital, and delivering the life changing and life savings treatments they need to live happy and full lives in their community. He shared with us some of his personal experiences and photos, video and stories of some of the young children he has come into contact with while engaged in this work on behalf of ROMAC. It was clear to see his commitment and passion for the work. Some of the images or deformity prior to surgery were disturbing and the after results were remarkable. Despite that the surgical teams donate their time pro-bono the cost of bringing families to ANZ and the cost of hospital time can be significant with bills in the tens of thousands. The money is provided by Rotarians and the support they give to ROMAC to carry out the work. Phil closed by asking us to consider in our support considerations donations specifically to ROMAC to help them carry out the work they do so well and that has such a huge benefit to children’s lives. The meeting then closed.

Ross Hood informed the NYSF applicant was successful in his selection. Ross is now evaluating the RYLA application.
Most of the affected children from developing counties live in very remote areas and they are usually hidden from the general public or forced to be beggars. Some of them don’t survive.
RYDA will be held on 19.8.16 at Olympic Park and 190 students from Gilroy College will be attending. Need 6 volunteers to assist. Phil Davis informed there will a BBQ at Bunnings Castle Hill on 7.8.16. Need volunteers.

Around 40 – 50 children are brought to Australia each year for surgery. Medical history of the patient is build up by the ROMAC Board through the assistance of the local Rotary club and the Board will pursue for surgeons to conduct the surgery pro bono. The surgeon will then establish his/her own surgery team. The patent and a parent are flown in to Australia and they usually live in local Rotarion’s home during pre and post surgery. Most of the cost spent by ROMAC is the hospital charges approximately $1 million a year. Philip shared a story of a 17-year girl who had a heart defect and underwent surgery at Macquarie Hospital and was hosted by Rotarians from RC Glenhaven. Philip also showed pictures of many children who had been operated on and their reaction and photos after the surgery and the healing after 6 months.
Philip hopes that RC Castle Hill will support the ROMAC program. For further information visit ROMAC website: The mission statement: To pro- romac.org.au 10
