be settled. The Rotary Cross-Country Challenge 2016. Whilst some details remain to be finalised, the following key issues are resolved:

Background: The Rotary Club of Castle Hill has Operational Details: decided to present a new event in 2016 for the Date 11 September, 2016 purpose of raising funds to reduce domestic vioVenue Bella Vista Farm, Baulkham Hills lence in The Hills. Time from 0830am – 12-30 pm The Rotary Club of Castle Hill has extensive experience in presenting events for community participation for the purpose of raising funds for charitable purposes: The principal example being the Tour de Hills Bicycle Classic Event presented in the Hills Shire for 20 Years up to 2015. Events of that kind no longer attract the approval of the appropriate authorities. The Rotary Club of Castle Hill is exploring the feasibility of presenting a special event: “The Rotary Cross Country Challenge” in ways likely to attract the involvement of elite runners interested in Cross Country Events as well as middle range runners and families alike. Our aim is to see the event grow into a more significant vehicle for funding valuable community service projects and providing opportunities for the community to be involved in worthwhile, shared activity with each other. It will remain part of the Orange Blossom Festival. Arrangements are to be made for a range of refreshment and beverage outlets to be available and for the Bella Vista Farm to be open to the participating public. A fun day of participating in a community event, a range of good quality picnic lunch options and involvement in a selection of recreational activities is planned. Negotiations are ongoing for all these issues to

Conditions of the event: The event will not be conducted as a race, but electronic timing facilities will be available to enable competitive entrants to record their actual running time for the course of their choice. The event will be conducted entirely within the grounds of Bella Vista Farm on three courses presented in a Cross-Country format, mostly on grass. Courses will be marked out and attended by Rotarians as marshalls. All participants will have the opportunity to register on-line prior to the event and will therefore be able to achieve a discounted registration fee. The full Registration Fee will be payable by those who just present on the day. The Registration Fee structure is as set out below. All participants will, as part of the registration process, be required to acknowledge 6

the practical risks associated with being part of the event and indemnify Rotary and the Council and the Sponsors from any liability arising from their participation. Parking facilities will be available FREE of charge on the Bella Vista Property. First Aid facilities will be provided, as will refreshment stalls, entertainment, toilets and rest facilities within the grounds. The Bella Vista Farm will be open for public inspection. Sponsorship proposals are currently being examined on the basis that this event is a fund-raising initiative of the Rotary Club of Castle Hill. Whilst our primary objective is to raise funds to reduce family violence in The Hills, the identity of the primary beneficiaries of funds raised will be negotiated with major sponsors, Minor beneficiaries will include Police Legacy, The Rotary Foundation and Rotary Health Research. Apart from costs legitimately associated with presenting the event, all funds raised will be applied for the benefits of those charitable organisation identified before the event. Rotary carries a public risk cover of $50,000,000 for events of this kind. Entry Fees: On-line registration will be available for all entrants from mid August with a reduced entrance fees for early, on-line registrations which will close on September 8. Children under 16 years will only be able to participate as part of a family group. Classification

Anyone got a million dollars to spare? The two Sydney Rotary districts are combining to unleash our first “Million Dollar Dinner” on Rotarians, friends and colleagues in the Sydney region. The object of the exercise is to awaken all to the enormous potential bequests have in terms of providing for the future, and to encourage enough people to take action to reach the million dollar target. Bequests are simple enough. You allocate a proportion of your estate to the charity or charities of your choice and you are being asked to consider The Rotary Foundation as one of those charities. Thinking in terms of 3 to 4% of the estimated value of your estate would not be a hardship on your children or inheritors but it’s something you should discuss with them before taking action. I’ve talked to my kids about this and they agree they can manage on 95% of what I leave behind and that’s the sort of discussion you should have with your family. A bequest is a simple way of supporting The Rotary Foundation. It costs you nothing and in most cases it’s done jointly so there are no movement of funds under both husband and wife have departed. We’ve all given a large part of our lives to Rotary and its mission, so leaving a bequest allows the work you have done over all those years to continue. Bequests go into the Endowment Fund meaning the money is never spent. The funds are invested and the earnings go to projects, so the contribution you make through a bequest will go on working forever. The dinner is at the Epping Club on Monday 28th November and further details will be available later. Anyone agreeing to a bequest in excess of US$10,000 will be recognized as a member of the Bequest Society on the night but even without a bequest involvement it will be a night worthy of attendance. Keynote Speaker will be past RI President and Foundation Trust Chair Kalyan Banerjee and he is an exceptional speaker. We are targeting five new Bequest Society members from this club for the night. Talk to me if you need more information and we’ll get the ball rolling.
