need your support on the day as in the past. Therefore if you are going to be in town on Christmas Day and can spare an hour or so in the morning please be prepared to sign up to come along and share the Christmas spirit with those stuck in hospital. his week you have the dubious pleasure of listening to me talk about my home town. I thought this might be of interest to some of you and I hope that it is. As the history of our country, at least the documented history of European settlement, is so very recent, I thought it might be of interest to share some of the history of my home town which dates back almost 2 millennia, rather than two and bit centuries. I promise not to go on too long as there is a lot of ground to cover and I could do a whole series of talks just on one topic. The construction of cathedral and its many features is probably two or three talk’s worth. It is by the way known as the Minister. Of course I am proud of my home town and I hope that my enthusiasm for it and its history will come through. It might encourage some of you to visit or to explore more through your own reading. hen we meet it is probable that the USA will have a new President Elect. How the world will react is anyone’s guess. Hopefully a period of sensible reflection from all will be forthcoming. Much is happening in the world at the moment with the Syrian crisis seemingly no nearer an end and troubles elsewhere in world. It reminds me that the work we do in Rotary to build friendships and to seek to do good to all people regardless of creed, colour, origin or anything else is the key thing we all need to hold on to when we hear others sounding off. So I urge all of you not let others influence your judgement or lead you away from the Four Way Test and live your life by that. e will welcome back our Directors from their gallivanting about the place – we saw Terry O back last week. Hopefully we will soon have some exciting new projects to talk about with you all and be looking forward to a busy calendar 2017 we can continue our good works in our community and beyond. See you all soon.

T

the earliest Youth Exchange students of Rotary Australia to leave our shores, heading off to Japan, and thereby forming a life-long relationship including marriage to a Japanese gentleman. She still travels to Japan regularly to meet with her ‘sisters’ with whom she stayed and formed a strong bond of friendship from all those years ago. he has reminded us of the value of these exchanges and so I ask that you all consider whether this is something the club should once again support as we have done in the past. Our last student was with us in Bev’s presidency and I know that young Santi gained hugely from his time here. The lifelong friendships that have characterised the experience of others including Cherrilyn is clearly something they value greatly. Please let us know if this is something you would like to revive in Paul’s year. We cannot do it in this current year as I think the boat has sailed on that one. Also we do not have the funds allocated for this. e were reminded that young people are now a bit younger (15 or so years old) and probably fit best in families where the children are a bit younger than them. So if we are to consider this we will need to think about who they might stay with as most of use as members are of an age where our own kids are long past that age. For some of us that goes for our grandkids also! n speaking with Hannibal the other day he has committed once again to providing small presents for people in the hospital on Christmas Day. Yours in Rotary , He has asked me to let you all know that he will

ooking back at the momentous 1917 Rotary Convention in Atlanta, it is difficult to see what could have been contentious about the words of then-President Arch C. Klumph: “It seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world.” Yet, at the time, support for the idea was far from unanimous. Some thought an endowment fund would create more trouble than it was worth. But Klumph’s idea received the support it most needed in the form of an initial donation of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Mo.

N

early 100 years later, we recognize Klumph’s idea as not only visionary, but revolutionary: It set in place the mechanism that allowed Rotary to become the vast force for “doing good in the world” that it is today.

I

n many ways, our Rotary Foundation is the foundation of Rotary as we know it. It has created a mechanism for cooperation and partnership among clubs and between Rotary and other organizations; it has enabled us to be ever more ambitious in our work and to reach for goals of historic proportions, such as the eradication of polio. It is impossible to quantify the good that has been done over the last century as a result of The Rotary Foundation. All we can know for sure is that Arch Klumph, if he could see it, would be proud.

I

am looking forward to seeing many of you at our international convention in Atlanta: the city where our Foundation was born. I hope a record number of Rotarians will be there to celebrate the centennial of our Foundation. In the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate! I encourage you to read more about the Foundation centennial at centennial.rotary.org. There, you’ll learn about the history of our Foundation and find ideas for events and projects in your clubs and your community.

O

ne of the most important ways we are celebrating the Foundation centennial is with a fundraising goal of $300 million. Your gift to your Foundation is the best way of ensuring a strong second century for Rotarians Doing Good in the World and for Rotary Serving Humanity.
