Violence Against Women Greceila Jota

C

ONSIDER THE FACTS by UN Women National Committee Australia, Asia Pacific

Violence against women is the leading cause of death and disability of women no matter their age. 35.6% Of women experience physical or sexual intimate violence by partner, or non-partner, in their lifetime. Every 10 minutes Somewhere in the world, an adolescent girl dies as a result of violence. 2 in 3 Women in the Pacific will experience physical and/or sexual violence at the hands of an intimate partner. Up to 80% Of men in the Asia Pacific admit to perpetrating physical and/or sexual violence against women and girls in their lifetime.

A

ustralian women are more likely to be sexually assaulted by a person they know than a stranger. Young women are particularly vulnerable to sexual assault. Of all Australian women, 15 % had been sexually assaulted by a person they knew, since the age of 15. For 62% of the women who had experienced physical assault by a male perpetrator, the most recent incident was in their home. 3.8% had been sexually assaulted by a stranger. Twice as many women in this 18 to 24 age bracket experience sexual assault, compared to all women. “There is one universal truth, applicable to all countries, cultures and communities: violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable. – Ban KiMoon, UN Secretary General For more information and research about

2 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime Globally 35.6% of women experienced physical or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner in their lifetime. In Australia alone, a woman is subjected to domestic or family violence every 4 minutes and a woman is killed as a result of that violence every week. Of women over the age of 15, 1 in 3 experienced intimate partner violence, 1 in 5 has experienced sexual violence and 1 in 4 has experienced emotional abuse. World Bank data shows that women aged 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, car accidents, war and malaria. Remember that silence is affirming. When we choose not to speak out about violence against women (or any other injustice) we are supporting it It is most common for women to experience violence from a male ex-partner. Of women who had experienced violence from an ex-partner: 61 % had children in their care when the violence occurred. 73 % had experienced more than one incident of violence. 58 % had never contacted the police. 24 % had never sought advice or support. For 62% of the women who had experienced physical assault by a male perpetrator, the most recent incident was in their home For more information and research about violence against women visit www.anrows.org.au 5

THIS WEEK’S ROTARY FOUNDATION THOUGHT is about The programs of The Rotary Foundation When the Foundation’s founder Arch C Klumph said: “The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it….but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary, we are engrav-

ing on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity. " The educational, humanitarian and PolioPlus Programs are the monuments of the Rotary Foundation and Rotarians should be proud to yell it from the roof tops. We will eradicate polio, hunger and poverty. We will help the world find peace. By supporting the Rotary Foundation with an annual gift you help build these immortal monuments of Rotary. 7
