From President Mike Hallen
R
odney from Amsterdam was certainly entertaining for an undertaker! But he did have some sage advice about planning for the inevitable funeral – perhaps our own. He was also keen to save us all money in the process – save money on the flowers and the huge death notice in the newspaper. No need for a Minister of religion either! Cheap coffins are also available to save extra cash for the beneficiaries if you want to! All in all an entertaining talk on a difficult subject. Don’t forget to visit the club website and nominate members (yourself?) to be considered for the Board in 2016-2017. I am sure PE Chris is anxious for volunteers. The AGM is not long away so gets your bids in! We are off on 20 November to prepare the second cottage at St Michael’s for painting. We may also have to paint the feature wall in the first cottage (MULBERRY!) if PE Chris has not been successful in getting the professionals to do it. It will also need to masked in preparation for whoever does it. Hannibal Shabaz is up and running (figuratively) after his knee surgery. I spoke to Joan on Thursday and he had overdone it on Wednesday - surprise! According to Joan the procedure was very beneficial and the difference it has made to Hannibal’s ability to move about is dramatic. See you soon, Hannibal! The speaker on November 25 will be Milton Baar and his topic will be " Cyber-terrorism''. Should be interesting and thoughtprovoking and an ideal night to invite a guest to attend. Our partners are always very welcome. Yours in Rotary
President Mike .

resident Mike opened the meeting by providing an update on the health of members. Joan Shabaz is at home again after more chemotherapy and is
coping despite Hannibal having undergone a knee arthroscopy which has prevented him going up and down stairs. Marie Ford sends the Club a big thanks for the roses which she find so beautiful she insisted they be put in a common area of the convalescent facility so that everyone could enjoy them. She will see the Doctor again soon and is hoping to be back among us very soon. Penny will be her chauffeur. Guest were welcomed. Rod Williamson brought two guests, Margaret and Alex, and Mike also welcomed our guest speaker. PDG Bruce Allen shared some of his experiences at a recent Zone Rotary meeting held in Manilla. Some 1400 Rotarians were present, coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Taiwan the Philippines and of course Australia. Brice had some discussions with various people regarding the Foundation and 4 people who were present became members of the Arch Klumph Society, meaning their cumulative giving to the Foundation amounts to US$250,000 or more. Chris Dunwell reminded members that the painting of the second cottage at St Michael’s will be happening on Friday 20th November, which is preparation day. Members are requested to provide assistance wit the preparatory work which will include masking woodwork, removing nails and screws from walls etc. and sanding walls in the bathrooms and the second living area (wood panelling). Brinley Paints are donating the paint and the Master Painters
CEO is finding painters who will come on the 21st and 22nd to complete the painting. Members are asked to bring their own tools and step ladders to help out. Pre work will commence at 8.00 am on Friday and will be finished as quickly as possible and hopefully by shortly after lunch is enough people turn up. CD will collect the paint and provide masking tape and sandpaper. One wall in the first cottage will need repainting as the feature colour is wrong. We will ask Brinley to provide additional paint and hopefully the professionals will have time to paint this also. If not CHRC will provide the paint and the painters. The cottages will be occupied before Christmas and hopefully by the end of November. Phill Dunn advised that the stock leftover from the Garage Sales will be sold via Grays On Line so if anyone wants to claim something for a charity, please do so soon or it will be sold. Rotaract are holding BBQs at Spotlight for their grand reopening on the 18th, 21st and 22nd so if anyone has a spare 4 hours to help them it will be much appreciated. Phil Davis reminded everyone that our own BBQ is being held at Bunnings on Sunday and appealed for helpers for the shift from noon till 4 pm. Help at other times is also appreciated. Sergeant Phil fined members (see last page)and then told a joke about a nun and a cabbie. Actually quite funny. Nice one Phil. Guest Speaker – Rodney Reitdyk Rodney, originally from the Netherlands, who moved to New Zealand, wanted to join the police force but became a nurse during the waiting period and never became a policeman, after 21 years of nursing was having 8
a break. A friend asked him to help ther if out in a funeral home. And he never returned to you feel the family and friends can honour the nursing and has been in the funeral passing of their relative and friend. Caskets come in many different process but they all provide the same level of comfort – as Rodney said you can believe him because he has tried them all out for himself! Prepaying the funeral is a good idea but be careful about the type of policy you take out and understand the small print. You can get caught out with expenses you didn’t expect if you have the wrong policy. The Crematorium can’t force you to collect the ashes if you don’t want to. If you do, you can scatter them just about anywhere you want to. President Mike thanked Rodney for his entertaining and enlightening talk. The meeting concluded with the singing of Advance Australia Fair.

business ever since. He share with us some home truths about the industry, which is very commission driven and encourages people, at times of emotional vulnerability, to spend more than they need to. His preference has been honesty with the clients he serves. He shared a number of facts with us and a number of funny stories. Some of the key facts included – Putting flowers on a casket can cost $300. Buy your own from the local florist for much less money. At a cremation you don’t need a priest. You probably don’t need a celebrant ei9
