From President Mike Hallen

H

APPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! Better late than never for those I have not seen at one of our home visits.

It was a sad start to the year with the passing of our dear friend Joan Shabaz. A number of us attended Joan’s funeral on 13th January. She was indeed a remarkable woman and a devoted wife and mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with Hannibal and his family. In lieu of flowers the Club has made a donation to the Cancer Council in accordance with her family’s wishes. You will all probably have received the latest email update on the recovery of PDG David Rands who is now in the spinal rehabilitation section at the Ryde Rehab. hospital receiving specialized treatment. In David’s own words: “I'm now in the spinal rehab section at Royal Rehab, Ryde. Very nice and on day 1 we are impressed with facilities and staff. I have an extraordinarily busy schedule this week so would appreciate people checking before they come. Best also if visits remain short as they do tire me. In terms of progress all the collateral injuries - broken ribs, collapsed lung, bruised internal organs - all seemed to have healed up promptly as hoped. The back is physically strong, but gets tired after prolonged upright sitting. I hope this improves. The really good news is I am now able to initiate some small movements n my legs which was not possible for 6 weeks. Gives the physio something to work with”. This is great news indeed and we wish David well as he continues his recovery. BTW, David regularly posts on Facebook if you want to keep an eye on his progress. It is worthy of note that PE Chris Dunwell is seeking nominations for his 2016-2017 Board. Nominations have been called for and we plan to hold the postponed election of officers on 3rd February as decided at the AGM. Please give consideration to volunteering yourself, I am sure Chris will be very thankful of your nomination. Some dates to consider regarding training for the new board are PETS at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management on 27th February and District Assembly at The Kings School on 16th April starting at 9:00am (coffee and registration are earlier). International Service Chairman, Phil Davis has done a great deal of work on our planned International Night on 10 February at the Bar La Me Thai restaurant, 243 New Line Road, Dural (at the head of the driveway to Springfield House). Other local clubs have ben invited and many have accepted. The cost is $38 per person and there will be a speech by the Thai Acting Consul General as well as a Thai cultural presentation of song and dance.

Yours in Rotary

President Mike 2

T

here is a story told in my Hindu tradition of two sages, Shaunaka and Abhipratari. They were worshippers of Prana, the wind god. One day, the two men were about to sit down to lunch when a poor student knocked on their door, asking for food.

The sages realized the student spoke the truth and invited him to enter and share their meal. For they understood, at that moment, that by opening the door to one who sought their help, they were not only serving that individual – but reaching toward a larger goal.

Germ reveals ‘Rotary Serving

Humanity’ as 2016-2017 presidential theme

R

otary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do,” RI President -elect John F. Germ said, and that being a part of Rotary is a “great opportunity” to make that happen.

Last year’s milestones leave just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the virus still circulates. Polio would be only the second human disease ever to be eradicated. When that moment arrives, it’s “tremendously important” that Rotary is ready for it, said Germ. “We need to be sure that we are recognized for that success, and leverage that success into more partnerships, greater growth, and even more ambitious service in the decades to come.”

Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidential theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, to incoming district governors on 18 January at the International As- Germ, a member of the Rotary Club of Chattasembly in San Diego, California, USA. nooga, Tennessee, USA, encouraged attendees “I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to return to their clubs and communities and to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small spread the word about Rotary’s role in the fight opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a for a polio-free world. lifetime to change the world for t “People who want to do good will see that Rotahe better, forever through Rotary’s service to hu- ry is a place where they can change the world. manity,” said Germ. them that opportunity,” Germ said. Enhancing Rotary’s image isn’t the only way to boost membership. “We need clubs that are flexible, so our service will be more attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people.”

After a historic year in which transmission of the wild poliovirus was stopped in Nigeria and all of Africa, Germ said we are closer than ever to end- He added: “We need more willing hands, more ing polio. caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward.” “We are at a crossroads in Rotary,” he added. “We are looking ahead at a year that may one day be known as the greatest year in Rotary’s history: the year that sees the world’s last case of polio.”
