From President Mike Hallen
T
hanks to all those who turned up at our first regular meeting for 2016. Our guest speaker was very interesting and provided insights into the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia of which we were not necessarily aware.
Tonight we are re-opening our AGM to elect officers for the 2016-2017 Board under PE Chris Dunwell. As was stated by PDG Bruce Allen, we have obligations under RI and as an incorporated body to fulfill our obligations regarding the election of officers. We also need to get the information to the D9885 Communications team (via the District website) so that our entry in the new District Directory will be accurate and fit for purpose. Any volunteers? With respect to the new Board, the District Assembly will be held at The Kings School, North Parramatta, on 16th April 2016. The 2016-2017 board should make their best efforts to attend as much important information will be provided and it is an opportunity to meet the District Governor for 2016-2017, Bruce Lakin, and his Team. You will all recall that the RIPE for 2016-2017 is John Germ and his theme for the year is “Rotary Serving Humanity”.
As indicated by Community Service Director, Mike Blair, the deck being constructed for Scott Green is nearing completion and will be the subject of a photo shoot by the Hills Shire Times with the Police LAC on Thursday 4 February. Please come and wear your club shirt. Mike Blair has the address but it is the last house on the right in Kentwell Street, Baulkham Hills. We are planning to hold a birthday party on 17th February to celebrate Rotary International’s 111th birthday (a little premature but worthy of celebration in any event). We shall also be thanking those who assisted in the painting of the St Michael’s transitional housing for the Lisa Harnum Foundation and the provision of supplies for the deck for Scott Green. This will be a great evening and your partners and any other visitors will be most welcome. Also note that Business Networking Meeting #2 has been rescheduled to 27 April 2016. The club calendar will reflect this change. Yours in Rotary

Dr
Michael James Bendon holds post -graduate qualifications in Archaeology, History, Linguistics, Maritime Archaeology, Education and Cultural Heritage. He has worked for a great number of years as an archaeologist on numerous sites around the Mediterranean and Europe including Israel, Portugal, Germany and Greece. More recently, he has been assisting a colleague in investigations on Phalasarna, a large Classical/Hellenistic maritime city in Western Crete, as well as working on the excavation of the first Minoan shipwreck to be discovered. His most recent research has revolved around two British WWII wrecks located off shore from the ancient Phalasarna site. After some five years of research, Michael has found out some amazing stories of the involvement of these craft in the Mediterranean campaigns of 1941. The talk presents a story of secretly developed vessels and the part they played in not only supporting ANZAC troops in North Africa and Crete but also in saving many thousands of troops from the hands of the invading German forces. Until the publication of his recent book, “The Forgotten Flotilla”, virtually nothing was known of these craft and the work they carried out. Website: www.forgottenflotilla.com 3

Last week Guest Speaker Graham Wilcox ‘ s Talk
G
raham Wilcox speaking on The Struggle for Unity “A Story of Federation of Australia”. Graham Wilcox (Graham John Rutledge Wilcox) is a genealogist and family historian. Graham lives with his wife Joanna of more than 50 years at Pitt Town on the Hawkesbury River. His home is close to the area where several of his ancestors settled on the bank of the river more than 200 years ago. After more than 20 years research of his ancestors about their lives he decided it was time to write a biography of his greatgrandfather Sir Arthur Rutledge. Graham’s research into the life of Sir Arthur revealed that his life was more than that of an interesting ancestor but a great Australian whose important story had never been told. A story of Federation from one of its great supporters. The suggestion that the British colonies on the Australian colonies on the Australian continent might one-day unite to form a nation was first made early in the 19th century. By the 1870s many people took it for granted. However, despite a multitude of compelling arguments for federation, there were many people who fought against it. Queensland had a strong movement to go as a separate nation and separate from the rest of Australia. As Queensland approached the referendum to join the Commonwealth a NO vote and separation seemed to be the most likely outcome. Arthur Rutledge a brilliant lawyer and Queensland AttorneyGeneral was a delegate at the vital 1891 Federation Convention in Sydney and took part in drafting the Australia Constitution. Arthur Rutledge convinced Queenslanders especially in the north, that their young thinly populated colony could not survive if they were not part of the Commonwealth. He managed to get Queensland across the line with a slim majority. That success was also a significant influence on Western Australia to join the Commonwealth; thus making “The Grand Island Continent” complete. Graham expressed in great detail the various political intrigues in the politics in the various colonies of Australia eg. Queensland NSW Western Australia to get this dream to occur, Federation of Australia. David Bull gave a vote of thanks to Graham. 8
