From President Mike Hallen
A
nother great night at our club last week. We celebrated Rotary International’s 111th birthday (albeit a little early) and the community service projects that we have undertaken so far this Rotary year. In particular we thanked the individuals and companies that have provided support for our painting and building projects. We heard from Aileen Mountifield of the Lisa Harnum Foundation about the positive effect that our painting had made to the transitional housing at St Michael’s and Scott Green gave an inspirational address about what the new deck and ramp at his house will mean to him and his family. That is what Rotarians are all about! We gave Certificates of appreciation to all the donors of material and expertise and surprised three local identities with Paul Harris Fellow Recognition. Councillor Raymond Harty, Aileen Mountifield of the Lisa Harnum Foundation and Superintendent Rob Critchlow were all suitably surprised and thankful for the recognition. Rob went on to say that since his introduction to Rotary he had always coveted a PHF – and we gave him one! Tonight we recognize another group who have gone the extra mile in their delivery of service to our community, our Pride in Workmanship awardees for 2016. Each of them has displayed all the qualities that we assess as we recognize them for the way they go about their work. We also induct our Mayor, Councillor Dr Michelle Byrne, as an Honorary member of the Rotary Club of Castle Hill. I am sure she will be made most welcome by all, our members and partners. Elsewhere in this bulletin I have provided my opening address and the citations for each of the PHF awardees. Yours in Rotary
President Mike

ood evening and welcome to this special night of thanks. Thanks to all our supporters and thanks to Paul Harris for having the vision to start what is now our fantastic international service organization, Rotary international. In the context of our rotary-ness and our work in the local community, it is worth thinking about the object of Rotary, described as: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity to serve; High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society; The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business and community life; and
Well it did - and it lasted for a few days but the blue masking tape remained in place and on Saturday the painters arrived. When they left at the close of the day the first cottage was completed. The same principle was applied to the second cottage and by the end of November both cottages were ready to be dressed for occupation by those in need of a safe place to live. The transformation was staggering as Aileen Mountifield from the Lisa Harnum foundation will tell us shortly. I mentioned that we were able to source paint and painters for these jobs, well, without the support of Councillor Raymond Harty and the CEO of the NSW division of the master painters association, Therese Lauriola, we would have been in a lot of trouble! They both

provided great support and assistance. My thanks go to my Rotarian colleagues who made themselves available to assist with the work. In mike Blair’s absence, Chris Dunwell was the benevolent overseer.
These four statements encapsulate the very essence of why we do what we do as Rotarians. It is why we have been able to support our local community in a variety of Our second major community project was to build a new ways this rotary year. Our members have applied the deck for Scott Green and his family – a task we accepted object of rotary and got on with the jobs at hand - jobs with great pleasure. that were a bit of a challenge to say the least. SHOW GATE Change in the times for our Friday 4th March Following consultation with the Show Society, there is now a change in the times for our Friday 4th March roster. The Show will be closing earlier on Friday this year, therefore we will only need 3 shifts which will be as follows: 5:30 am – 9:30, 9:30 am – 1:30 and then 1:30 pm – 5:30. Thank you to those who have given me their names for shifts. If you have not yet replied, it would be appreciated if you could let me know what days and times you will be available. Thanks,

ur club has a strong tradition of supporting The Rotary Foundation and much of that support comes from members’ personal contributions. In the main, we do this through the Centurion program which asks members to contribute $100 a year for as long as they are able to. That relates to a contribution of $1.92 a week but the power of that $100 is enormous. $100 can buy 100 polio vaccines and that will stop 100 children contracting this disease. The really scary part of all this is that 5% of children who contract polio will die from it so the $100 you give is saving five lives each and every year. I think we should send a message to the rest of the world and that message is that we care and we are prepared to do something about it. 100% of our membership committing to the Centurion program would send the right message and it just might encourage other clubs to do likewise. Why not do it now in Rotary’s birthday month?

Hi Everyone, Mike Blair went down on bended knees at our meeting on Wednesday to seek members support for Showgate collections over 4 – 6th March and managed to pick up one or two extra helpers but we are by a long way short. The Current situation is desperate with the following man/woman power needed: Friday 4th
6 people
Saturday 5th
20 people
Sunday 6th
18 people.
While in past years, when we had a reasonable membership, we only had to do one shift. But in recent times it has now become necessary to do more than one and we are now at an acute stage of membership where we are forced to ask members to do at least two and three shifts if possible. With the loss of the TDH this is our biggest fund raising project. Please give this request your urgent consideration and contact Phil Dunn – 0427 788 807 email Phil - woolfarm@bigpond.com Mike Blair – 0418 606 921 email Mike- nailgun44@gmail.com Thanks in anticipation. Yours in Rotary
